Cardmember Email: A chic peek, just for Cardmembers

"Thanks!" to many of you, including AnneG, Desert Flower, Marietta, Cass, Irina, & Silver Lining, who shared with us the latest email from J.Crew to its card members.

The email above features the not-yet-officially-released-online the Brompton Hobo (Item 29063; $298.00). J.Crew describes this leather purse as:
An icon in the making, this all-season hobo is that rare blend of elegant and easy-wearing, with a supple, burnished finish that only improves with age. (It's on the top of our must-have list this season.) We love the slouchy, luxurious shape, and rich, old-world patina (our designer handpicked this supple Italian cloud leather to mimic the lustrous, timeworn feel of vintage club chairs). The ingenious crafting includes a detachable shoulder strap (we can't live without it), a turnlock closure and and an abundance of roomy pockets for carrying everything you need (and then some). Antiqued-finish gold-plated hardware adds to the subtly elevated feel. From the office to off-the clock hours, it's our handbag heroine for autumn—and beyond. Interior zip pocket and split-patch cell pocket. Cotton twill lining. Part of the J.Crew Collection. Import. Comes with dust bag. Removable, adjustable shoulder strap fully extends to 22". 5 1/2" handle drop. 11"H x 15"W x 4"D.
Is it just me, or is this one of J.Crew's lengthier product descriptions? I am all for them, as they tend to add more excitement around the item. The bag is cute but does n0t necessarily stand out as a "must-have". It kind of looks like the cousin of some of the other purses they already offer like the Leather Gallery Satchel (Item 13336; $298.00) & Gallery Hobo (Item 13339; $298.00). But that is just me. :)

On another note, this email (with a sneak peek to the July catalog) means that new arrivals and a new July catalog are just around the corner! :) Although, doesn't it feel like the last roll-out was just a short time ago?

What are your thoughts on the Brompton Hobo? Do you like the style- from the sequins to the style with its flowers?

  1. Ha, I just emailed this to you Alexis! Please disregard. :)

Truthfully, I don't know if I can deal with any more rollouts/new arrivals... they are coming out at a fast and furious rate. This twice-monthly rollout thing that JC started doing just means that pieces are going to sale faster (but like we JCA's have been noticing, it's always a crapshoot which ones will sell out and which will go to sale - except maybe for the Lucido coat, that was kind of a no-brainer!). I personally think it's part of the plot to disguise diminishing quality - if you're replenishing your wardrobe every two weeks, you might not notice that item that you wore once is ready for the rag bag (I'm looking at you, linen-cotton wrap cardigan!). I understand that's fine for some people, but when I like the shape/color/design I'd like to be able to have the item around for a while.

The bag is kind of cute, but seems similar to some of their other bags. And too pricey for me, especially if it's going to be moved to the sale in mid-July, two rollouts from now.

  2. Silver Lining: Thank you so much for sharing the email!!! And I couldn't agree with you more, I also felt like this new rollout is remarkably close to the last one. Although I am looking forward to the July catalog- here's to hoping there some lovely new items inside!!! :)

  3. I 100% agree on the frenetic nature of rollouts, silver lining. I really love seeing new things, but more than once a month and my head starts to spin. Even once a month I feel a bit overwhelmed with the possibilities, lol. :)

Boden has four rollouts a year, two big for spring and fall, and two smaller for summer and winter. Although I have no reason to check their site as often, those four rollouts are so exciting...and come with a % off and free shipping. (Also, they have a sneak peek a bit earlier than the rollout and that usually comes with a 20% off and free shipping and returns--I tend to buy all my Boden this way!)

Although J. Crew has trained me to buy some things full price, I am now very wary for most items. I have zero time and energy to do the buy again at lower price and return at original price.

It seems the only items I am buying full price anymore are the collaboration items. :P

The bag, btw, is cute, but not for me. A bit too practical and I already have the Beacon tote for that purpose!

  4. Ach du lieber. So tired of phrases like "icon in the making" and "instant classic" and "it" this-or-that and so on ... it's so cliched.

  5. LBH: JC dreams up the embellished descriptions to move the items and to get the buyer excited so they will not notice the price increase and lower quality. I am too tired of them.

  6. I actually like this one a lot, and will probably get it when it goes on sale (at the end of next month, LOL!) I think it may be too big yet again, though. I wish they'd make a good mid-sized bag with over-the-shoulder straps. The colors on this one are great, IMO. I echo what others are saying about rollouts and markdowns making your head spin. I'm so dizzy that I'm just sitting things out. A great weekend to all!

  7. Just echoing the sentiment that items are being moved to sale soooo fast, what's the point of buying full price? Also, what's up with the inconsistencies with pricing online and in store? I want a particular skirt that is online for $59.99 but in store it's $29.99 (not in my size, of course!).

    Sorry for the rant!

About the handbag, I like it a lot. I really like the color selection (the carob is calling my name), but as mentioned it will probably be half-price in a few weeks.

  8. I think the bag is cute, but I am tired of hearing how "obsessed" they are with everything. Maybe they should change the wording and use "infatuated" or something else! Lol!

  9. I love hobos and I love satchels; this on looks like an over-night bag, it's so big! (Nice color though.)

  10. All the recent satchels and hobos are too big. I ordered Gabby satchel, and besides being rather ugly and not functional (i hate zippers on the sides), it was way too big. And the handles were not laying flat when you wear shoulder strap, I wonder if it would be a case with this bag. Love the colors, though. If it was smaller I would give it a try when this moves to sale.

  11. I Totally Need This,

I agree with you on the pricing inconsistencies. Esp. the watercolor skirt that is online for $65 and in stores for $30. Mine was very ill fitting but for $30 I might have kept and had it tailored but I returned it just for the pricing issues alone! Frustrating.

  12. JCrew has not trained me to buy full priced. I buy sale only and always have. esp. if they can take a collection piece from $350 down to $150 (or whatever amount) and still be making a good profit! I mean stuff is going straight to sale that was brand new a few weeks ago. I am willing to chance it....always.

  13. I got a different cardholder preview email for the Adidas Campus sneakers. They're white with black stripes, and they're almost as cool as the white-with-blue&green-stripes ones that I got a couple years ago at Famous Footwear.

  14. I really like this one a lot...hope I can catch it on sale.

  15. I'd love to get this on sale too!

  16. Bag looks like it would be very very heavy. On the other hand, I looove the idea of "an abundance of pockets" on the inside.

OT has anyone else noted a striking similariy between some pages of the current JC catalog and some pages of the current Garnet Hill catalog, rustic blue shutters, ruffled cashmere and all?

  17. It looks like a discounted version of Mulberry bags. I would like to feel the leather, though, b/c I doubt that the quality would be the same as Mulberry...I will probably pass..

  18. If you can't help me nobody can, Ms JCA!
I'm trying to find a medium British Khaki linen Ludlow vest for MY WEDDING on July 8, but everyone is sold out. I have the jacket and pants but can't find the vest. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  20. I think it's a great purse, and would be wanting it (on sale), but I actually just bought a bag very similar to this in color and style at the Coach outlet a week or so ago for a steal, and I love it. (see pic here: tinyurl.com/23sgkn8) It's a bit smaller I think, but has the ability to be shoulder or cross-body, which is great.

As for the description, I agree with La Belle Helene - so tired of the same phrasing!

I kind of like seeing new rollouts happen, since it means more things are heading to the sale rack. I rarely buy full-price, unless I'm pretty sure it will sell out and I "need" it desperately.

  21. Alexis,
Did you see the June edition of the WSJ Magazine featuring Mickey and J Crew? I posted links on my blog:

  22. Suzy: Thanks for letting me know the link is up. The upcoming WSJ was discussed in Thursday's "J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler Is On Top" post too. :)

  23. I'm saving my money for Fall. Some of the pieces look promising and I LOVE me some tweed! :-)

  24. I love it! Just waiting for it to go on sale :).

  25. I really like this bag, but I'm not in the market for a new bag any time soon. I already have way too many that I don't use. Lately I'm using my tiny Coach wristlet most of the time. I already have too much to carry and I can't add a large, heavy handbag to my load.

  26. So I just bought the Brompton Hobo and I LOVE IT. The only problem is that after a week or so the handles have been noticeably squeaky. I know that it has something to do with the leather and metal touching - but it's irritating. Any ideas?
