Love It or Leave It: Dream Tie Cardigan

Dream tie cardigan

Item 96220
Regular: $98.00

Many of you have already purchased this fabulous piece of clothing! The dream tie cardigan is definitely on my "lust list" for fall. I couldn't agree more with the "slight shirring at waist for a flattering and feminine look" description of this sweater- I really do believe it is both flattering and feminine at the same time!

I think this is definitely one of those pieces of clothing that works year-round, thus making this purchase a sound investment for your wardrobe.

What do you think of the Dream tie cardigan? Would you buy it? Do you own it? If you do own it, please let us know (1) what is your review of the sweater and (2) how would you wear the sweater. {"Thanks!" in advance for sharing!)

  1. I tried it on and loved it!! I am curious what colors everyone is buying - has anyone received theirs in eggplant yet??? I think I'll get the navy one when my credit card recovers.

  2. I have the eggplant on my list--when I am ready to make regular price purchases again. It's possible that I could try it on and hate it, though. I am an hourglass so if I wear stuff that's loose in the waist it can make me look much heavier than I am. I'm getting a little nervous about waiting, though, because some posters here have reported that eggplant was out in their B&M. I also thought it would look nice with an empire wool sheath, like the Jane suiting dress from 2 years ago.

    Any comments on fit?

  3. I haven't tried it on, mostly because I don't do well with things that tie. :) I always want to tie them on tightly, so they won't move, and that generally ruins the drape of the item. And makes me look fat. Both bad things in my book! :)

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'll have to go against the popular opinion because I tried it on and didn't think it was figure flattering! It made me look boxy, but I think that's just the style is...! Now I look at the stock picture with the model wearing it...I don't really think it flatters her figure at all either! Her whole waistline is lost and the focus seems to be on her tummy area where the tie is. I think someone who is really tall and slim would be able to pull this off, which is not my case since I wear petite sizes!

  5. I'm eyeing this cardigan too but I think I'll try it on in a store first.

OT, I'm wondering how everyone wears their Emily and/or Frances blouses. I saw so many rave reviews about them so I bought them last Sat. (when the accidental 30% off message was put on the final sale page) They arrived this past Fri.. Any idea would be greatly appreciated!

Also did anyone ever wash their embossed beach dress? I've been sending them to dry clean, but am wondering whether I can just wash them in cold water using Woolite. Thanks!

  6. I carry most of my weight in my stomach it makes me look 9 months pregnant. I love the color eggplant.

    ReplyDelete
  7. when i first saw it the only thing it reminded me of were my maternity tops!!!

  8. I am going to order one today and see if the fit looks nice on me or not. I love the eggplant color, but think that I will get more use out of navy...more color options.

jcpbuyer: I wore my Bunny Print Emily blouse with a white tank and british khaki colored 3" chino shorts (gold capri sandals and earrings) last week and loved the way I looked. VERY comfortable and feminine.

  9. JCPbuyer -

I wash all of my embossed beach dresses, cold water, hang to dry. I've noticed that on half of them, the tag says dry clean, but on the other half, the tag says it can be washed. It's been my experience that with clothing in general, hand washing actually helps them last longer than the harshness of dry cleaning. I reserve dry cleaning for fabrics that shouldn't touch water.

  10. I'd pass on this cardigan. I agree that is does remind me of maternity clothing.

  11. I purchased the Dream Tie Cardigan in Navy last weekend and LOVE it! I find it to be very flattering on my body type (hourglass w/pear tendencies), but did need to size down to XS to get the proper fit at the waist. It looks better when fitted and tied snug, than it does loose, like on the model...it also doesn't look like Maternity clothing when it fits properly. I am wearing mine with tanks and camis underneath (no tees or sweaters), and have created a couple of Polyvore sets with the different colors. *All colors are beautiful on this one, and the dark eggplant is actually more purple/plum than I had initially thought*. Click Here , Here , and Here . I had no intention of purchasing this went I went into the store, decided to try it on merely on a *whim*, and fell in love with it! I even plan to get a couple more when the price is lowered. :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. My eggplant one should arrive today so we'll see how it fits! I agree that I love the look....

    ReplyDelete
  13. I acutally will not be buying it. Whether I like the fit or not doesn't matter. I can't wear the dream knits. They might be a dream but they feel like a nightmare. So I will have to pass on the sweater

    ReplyDelete
  14. ffm: What color cami/tank did you get to wear under your navy cardi? Gray? I think that this color gives endless options.

    ReplyDelete
  15. jcrewjunkie: the possibilites with the navy cardi are limitless...yellow, kelly green, pink, white, gray, silver gray, champagne and bright mineral (which I just purchased Saturday). I LOVE the Bright Mineral under it with White pants or capris and silver accessories...it's a really pretty combination. :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have purchased both the silver and the eggplant (eggplant should arrive today or tomorrow). The Silver is beautiful. I am apple shaped (carry all of my weight in my stomach)so I didn't think it would look good but it really does. I would buy it in every color if I could. I would also say for me it was true to size. Sometimes I can squeeze into a small but I was a Med in this one. The small pulled too much.

    ReplyDelete
  17. OT: Just received a new email from J.Crew titled: *pretty.little.ruffles*...it's showcasing the Tartine. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is completely off topic (I love the sweater, but I think the way that it is cut will make me look booberific, particularly with the tie right under the puppies) but is the 40% off sale items in store offer still around?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I tried this on the other day, and I loved the shape of it - it was extremely flattering on me - but I thought it was a tad itchy. Anyone else feel that way? I really liked it, but I was afraid it would itch too much if I wore just a tank with it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. My plan is to try this on next time. If I like it, then I'll probably get it. I just don't know if I'll pay fp or wait for a sale. I'm also torn between the silver and honey glaze.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I purchased a Dream turtleneck sweater last winter, absolutely salivating over the rich purple color. Nice to look at, but much too itchy! The Cambridge cable sweaters are as irritating to the skin as I can stand.

    ReplyDelete
  22. janek: I agree with you about the cambridge cables. I can't wear them and I can't wear the dream. That basically rules out half of the jcrew sweaters to me. Its a real bummer

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi blumre-
Yes, it is bit depressing, considering these are the sweaters that have the really vibrant colors. I was considering the tie cardigan, but I would have to wear something that would cover my skin anywhere it touched. It looks beautiful with a cami, but there's no way I could do it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I bought this yesterday. It is not typically something I would get...ties are not my thing. But when I tried it on I loved it! I got the gold/yellow color. I may go try it on again now...ha ha!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wow, I tried this on in the store, and it is gorgeous. Very flattering, and I didn't feel that it made me look pregnant in the least. Not like a lot of these other popular tops right now. Runs true to size, and works for C/D cup ladies since it doesn't button closed.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm tall (5'11") with a long waist and often have problems with sweaters being too short and riding up. I bought up a size (in the eggplant) since I knew I'd be layering and it fits like a dream. I think it looks stylishly "cropped" instead of "short" on me. It maybe a better style for long bodies gals with a smaller bust.

    ReplyDelete
  27. as much as i love the look of this cardigan, when i tried it on it did remind me a little of maternity wear...something i don't want to revisit! i really wanted to like it and i think i would have really loved it if it didn't have the pleats making it pouf out just below the bust...and if they had made the waist/tie lower. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Personally, I never thought twice about getting the tie cardigan until I was shopping in one of the Charlotte J. Crews and saw a J. Crew employee wearing one. As soon as I saw it I immediately asked where I could find one in the store. This cardigan looks absolutely adorable in the honey glaze paired with some dark jeans and a cami! Fantabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  29. After looking at the pic of the model again, I have to say that the sweater tie is higher on her than it is on me. I don't personally have the Maternity effect, as the tie is lower on my waist, and not under my bust, so it actually gives more of an hourglass effect, as opposed to looking like an empire waist. I just think it is one of those items that you should try on...you may be surprised...I know I was. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. OT, does anyone know why I would have a charge of $1.00 on my credit card statement from J Crew when I've already been charged for the full amount of my most recent order? I thought they did it sometimes to check the card, but this charge came up a week after I was charged for my most recent order. Has anyone had this happen to them and will I be refunded?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Aly: Do they owe you a credit? The $1 pending charge also shows up when a credit is being processed, and not only when the card is being charged.

  33. This cardigan is very flattering and believe me, I am very conscious about wearing clothes that look non-maternity! I did purchase it in eggplant and bought the perfect fit tank in eggplant to wear with it. I normally wear a medium in J Crew but took a small in this size. It looks much better tied than not tied. I liked the color eggplant on me but did not LOVE it enough to justify keeping it for full price. So, its going back. The navy would probably be the best color for me but I have way too many navy sweaters in my closet already.

  34. I am so interested in this post because I AM pregnant and have been distessed over the JCrew purchases I cannot make this fall - I think most of the stuff is so beautiful this season!! However, I do plan to buy the Dream Tie Cardigan because it will serve me well as I grow this fall!! I am hoping to buy stuff that will transition well and I think this sweater will. Has anyone bought the Velvet Ecole jacket?? the fabric is so smooth and soft and the colors are like jewels - I think I like honey glaze best. I plan on just wearing it open!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. anon @9:49: Congratulations on your pregnancy...what an exciting time for you! :) I think you have so many options available at J.Crew to wear during the major part of your pregnancy! It sounds as if you already have a few ideas in mind, as well. I think that Expecting J.Crew Mommies will look adorable! Congrats again! :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I tried this cardigan on and it's great. I agree that the tie is higher on the model. I am a S and felt it was true to size. I'm not sure what's special about this cut, but it definitely does not accentuate my stomach or bust in a bad way as I thought it might.

Aly - I have also seen the $1 pending charge, but it has never posted on my card.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thank you Fabulous Florida Mommy! I also bought the flowy jersey bateau dress - very loose and comfy! I agree that there are many options I can go for and still look sassy! I may just have to buy stuff and put it on "hold" until next year, too - so many of the JCrew styles, in my opinion, are classics that last. I also just remembered I can wear my polka dot San Telmo jacket - it's cropped and A-line shaped. By the way, I have always thought about the Soleil D'Or jacket in gold - does anyone own???

    ReplyDelete
  38. Montrose, you sound like you & I have similar builds so I'll have to keep a close eye on your posts. I love the look on the model and plan on getting the sweater, but I haven't even looked at the colors!

    ReplyDelete
  39. jcrewjunkie and Chini, thanks so much for the responses! I have 2 embossed beach dresses, and both of them have "Dry Clean Only" labels. I'm so happy to learn they don't shrink in cold water:-)

  40. this may not be the right place for it, but i visited the b&m in st. louis this weekend and wanted to share my reviews! no purchases, as the sale section pretty much sucked, but tried on lots of full-price items in preparation for the next sale update...

1- wool fiona jacket in rhubarb: the color and stye were beautiful! it fit great, swingy and cute. don't think i will buy though even on sale, with the ruffles and color it looks too much like my geranium katie sweater jacket and i don't need another of those.

2- wool tank dress (name?) pretty shapeless. not good for my pear-shape. guess that's why they have it belted in the photo.

3- ruffled seaside jersey dress: so cute!! i tried on in black xs and loved it. $88 is too much, but super cute. it fit really straight, not frumpy at all.

4- knotted airy blouse (name?) love this! they only had polka-dot ones, but i love the solid colors online. it was slightly long, but the fit was great. i'm pretty flat-chested but it was flattering for me. not maternity at all like so many blouses there can be.

5- marcella blouse in honey glaze, 0- cute! the cut/ fit was great, perfect for under a suit or on it's own. definitely thicker silk material than the joelle. the honey glaze was a little too bright for the material though, i felt like a disco ball in it, but in a darker color i think it would work better.

6- denim pencil skirt in 4: very cute shape, would look nice with heels but not the kind you'd probably wear with flip-flops. it was a little long for me at 5'3", but otherwise fit well.

7- silky jersey tank, white xs: waaay too big. felt like a mumu. i guess would be cute as a tunic, but not a shirt. great material and was on sale, but i couldn't justify it. maybe if you are looking for maternity wear!

i think there was something else but not worth mentioning because i can't remember!

  41. anon 9:49: Congrats on your pregnancy:) How far along are you?

May I suggest the Lux Knit Gathered Tee (97245). The fabric is super soft and the colors are beautiful. On web they are 58.00, but they are marked at 39.99 at the b&m stores. You can all the b&m stores and see if they are still running the additional 40% off promotion, which will bring the price to 23.99.

    ReplyDelete
  42. montrose: I completely agree with you about the torso. I am only 5'2 but have a longer torso and I was surprised at how much I loved it. However, my mom who loved it on me and ran to get one for herself, ended up leaving it behind. She's about the same height as me but with a shorter torso. (btw, I got the honey glaze and am waiting for the eggplant to arrive tomorrow.)

Also, I agree with ffm regarding where the tie hits. On me it hits right at my waste and camouflages my tumtum. On the web, it looks so much higher (not my cup of tea).

OT: About my two lilys I ordered yesterday at $36 each, the Navy one got canceled :( But I'm not surprised, it looks like the snow one is still on its way though. Yay!

anon @9:49: Congratulations what a fun time for you!!! I loved being pregnant! That's when the kids are the best behaved and there's no back talking ;)

    ReplyDelete
  43. weab: With kids ranging from 3 to 15 I totally agree with you! LOL. All kidding aside I really did love being pregnant. That being said, J Crew has some wonderful fabrics in pieces that you can wear during and after the baby comes! CONGRATULATIONS!! Lucky you!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. The part about the pieces for wear during and after the baby was for anon and not weab! Just wanted to clarify. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. is the jcrew website giving anyone else an error message when you try it?

    ReplyDelete
  46. FFM: There is a Joelle blouse in the regal purple sz 4 available now. I know it will probably swim on you but you could have it taken in and you will finally have your blouse!

    ReplyDelete
  47. hdayton: Thank you so much for thinking about me with the Joelle Blouse! I noticed they had the 4 as well, but I think I am going to just pass on the Joelle...I have had so many problems with trying to get it, that I just don't have the desire to risk it again. :) Thanks again, though!

    ReplyDelete
  48. This sweater is cute, but not for me. It looks too much like a bed jacket. I prefer the more tailored classic shapes on my bod.

Off topic question about the silky jersey pleated tops. I got one at the store and could actually fit a medium. It fits me a lot like the model on the site - loose, but not billowing around the hem. Is this correct? Did everyone else find they run big? (I usually wear a large or a 14 on top) I want to order another one, and I'm afraid the one I have is a fluke! It's a great piece to layer under sweaters (wearing my black one today under my Flamenco dot sweater in black and white with black wool crepe pants).

    ReplyDelete
  49. molly yes they RUN HUGE! I can't even wear an extra small.

I am frustrated that the jcrew website isn't working for me :(

    ReplyDelete
  50. jcpbuyer: I machine washed my embossed beach dresses just like all my other clothes, without observing anything special and nothing happened! I also wasn't very careful and didn't check to see if they were dry clean only. Whoops. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. molly: they do run very big. I also couldn't even wear the XS and (I'm not that tiny). Also on my 5'2 frame, it hit BELOW my hips almost a dress on me. :) You're lucky that it works for you! I loved the material (and the great price)but had to pass.

blumre: that's strange, the site is working fine for me.

    ReplyDelete
  52. This is OT, but www.ninewest.com currently has free shipping on any purchase. Yay for fall shoes!

    ReplyDelete
  53. blumre - I'm not getting an error message on the website, but I saw the Katie sweater jacket and of course when you click on it there are none available. How do these items make their way back into the mix when they aren't available!!

webbysuzy - Good suggestion on the gathered tee 97245. I got it in honey glaze and love it. You're right about it being $39.99 at b&m + 40% off. Bizarre as it's full price on the Web.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I wanted to share my thoughts on a few of the new fall items I purchased recently:

Dream tie cardigan in snow - I'm not sure about this. I wish it would fit snugger around the tie. I think I'll try a smaller size.

TWO SKIRTS I LOVE AND CAN'T WAIT TO WEAR

-- Sparkle plaid tweed pencil skirt. Fabulous fit - gently hugs in the right places. I plan to wear it with the Skinny mirror-metallic belt in gold and probably something ivory on top.

-- Metallic cloqué pencil skirt - Gorgeous. It's made of a thin quilted material, but it's not at all bulky. Very comfortable, flattering fit. It has some metallic gold theading, but I think if I downplay what I wear on top, it will be very appropriate for the office. Not sure what kind of shoes will work though.

Lulu leather peep toes in honey glaze and dark cloud - I'm not a fan of peep toes, but I love these shoes. They are cut lower on the sides for a really fun look. They're comfy too.

Double-cloth tulip coat in chocolate - This fits nice, has cute sleeves. I think it'll work well with jeans and dressier clothes.

Crystal-button bird's-eye cardigan - This is a really pretty sweater - love the buttons. The fit is what sold me - it tends to be a bit more fitted which I like versus the tartine which seemed shapeless on me.

Hammered-silk tank - I fell in love with this as soon as I tried it on. It flows beautifully and looks great on its own or under cardigans and jackets. I orignally bought the peacock and like it so much I ordered the nantucket fog and bright yellow this morning.

Favorite-fit stretch vintage trouser cord. I'd like to try these....has anyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks for the information about the silky pleated top! Now about the hammered tank - does it have a zipper like the serengeti or watercolor floral? Also, how does the bottom fit? It it close, like the watercolor floral, or a little looser like the Piper tank? The fit on the model looks more like the Piper, but I never can tell.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Molly: No zipper, it's more of a knit than a blouse. The bottom is more billowy like the piper.

Tammylee: WOW!! what amazing purchase you made! Thanks for the great reviews! Now if only MY hammered silk tank would make an appearance on my doorstep! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sorry I wasn't clear - my ziper question was about the hammered tank. :-)

I'm worried it will have the same problem as the Serengeti tank when I tuck it in.

    ReplyDelete
  58. molly: the hammered-silk tank is more of a straight fit around the bottom - not like the piper. It's cute tucked in or left out.

weab: Your "WOW" comment makes me feel guilty - like I spent too much! It's ok, I can justify the purchase if I REALLY like the items!

    ReplyDelete
  59. molly: the hammered-silk tank does have a side zipper, but it works fine to tuck it in.

    ReplyDelete
  60. tammylee: I'm sorry. That was not my intention at all. I just meant that you purchased some really GREAT items. No guilt necessary! Again, I apologize if I came across wrong. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. anon @ 9:49 - Congrats on the pregnancy and also - yay! Another pregnant J. Crew lover....:) I treated myself to the Sherpa goodie yesterday as I can wear it open and it's sooooo comfy and cozy. Looking forward to sharing ideas over the next few months.

    ReplyDelete
  62. weab: Don't apologize. My comment was all in fun too.

I hope your tank comes today!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. ...er, that should be "hoodie" not "goodie". Stupid "smart" phone keeps correcting my spelling!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Tammylee-

They sometimes change fits from year to year, but I do have the Trouser Cords. I love them, and they are very versatile. J Crew cord fabric shrinks if you use the washer and dryer....I really noticed it in the length. I buy talls, wash and dry them 2-3 times, and then do alterations. If you send yours to the dry cleaner that may not be an issue...not sure.

You will love them. I want the gray ones this year!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love the honey glaze Dream Tie Cardigan but had to pass on it. Small was too lose in the waist area and XS too tight in my arms and shoulders. It would be a great versatile piece if it fit.

    ReplyDelete
  66. sweetlily: Thanks for the info. I tried on the bootcut cords and wasn't impressed. But, I think I'd like the trouser fit better. I like the gray too!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Tammylee-

I've found the bootcut to be really more of a straight leg. You can find better fitting bootcut cords elsewhere. Nordstrom usually has some higher end ones that appear to fit more like a tradtional bootcut, (not so trendy). You can't go wrong with the J Crew Trouser fit though....they look especially great with flat/chelsea type boots.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I have this cardigan in heather silver and I adore it! At first glance it does remind me of one of maternity tops but the minute I tried it, whoa. What a flattering fit!

It looks great with the piper tanks. Gives you a peek of the piper neckline details and some color past the hemline.

The empire waist sits lower on me because I'm short, so it doesn't make me look preggers at all. I'm want another one in navy or eggplant. I'm beginning to think that this is a better cardigan than the Tartine (I have four).

    ReplyDelete
  69. I really love the look of the dream tie cardigan. The heather silver and the dark eggplant look really beautiful to me. I'm a little concerned that it will emphasize the ladies (32DD) a little too much but I have a really long torso for my height (5'4")(and way short legs :). I'm hopeful! Has anyone bought it that has a large chest?

tammylee: I have two pair of the favorite-fit trouser cords from last fall. I really love them! I haven't had a problem with shrinkage but I wash in cold and then hang to dry to preserve the texture and color. They were much more flattering on me than the boot cut.

    ReplyDelete
  70. sweetlily and traci: Thanks. The trouser cords are on my list!

    ReplyDelete
  71. tammylee: I was just wondering about the sizing on the hammered silk tank. I usually wear a 4 in any other J.Crew top, but I'm not quite certain on whether to order a 4 or to size down and get a 2. I do have the Amelia tank in a 4 and found out that it fit a little loosely on me, more than I would like. Just wondering did you have to order a size down, is it a loose fit? I love this top and can't wait to get it, please help!

    ReplyDelete
  72. OT - It sounds like there is a concensus that the "silky jersey pleated top" is running very large. Bummer!! I ordered 3 Friday (have not received yet) in XS, which I normally wear in sleeveless tops. Sounds like they will be too big. Has anyone ordered the long-sleeve version of this shirt (right next to the sleeveless on the website, for $58 I believe)? Is this top running large as well?

    ReplyDelete
  73. beth - the long-sleeve top runs large as well. The XS is like one big flapping tent!

    ReplyDelete
  74. vivian - thanks! but darn!!! they are soo cute, and sounds like super comfy!

    ReplyDelete
  75. beth: I also wear an XS in sleevless tops and the Silky Jersey in XS fits me fine...it is supposed to be a little bit full, and that is how it fits on me. I personally really like it tucked in and then bloused over my pants or shorts a little bit. I really, really, really LOVE the shirt...I will have 7 of them once my order comes this week (I have 4 now). It's too bad it isn't working for everyone...I also think I could have taken an XXS, but fortunately for me, the XS does work. :)

    ReplyDelete
  76. mary ellen:

I usually get a 4 in J.Crew silk tops, although some 4s tend to fit me snug under the arms. I got a 4 in the hammered silk tank and it fits perfect. So, if 4s usually fit for you, you might want to go with a 2 in the hammered silk. I don't have an Amelia so I can't compare to that.

The fit of the hammered silk tends to be a straighter fit - not like the piper or the new watercolor floral rosette tank.

    You're going to love it!

    ReplyDelete
  77. thanks FFM! I actually took the plunge and bought a couple because of how much you were raving about them in a previous post last week :) I guess I will just have to wait and see how they fit me. Glad you love them though! Don't you just love when you find something you can't get enough of, and get it in tons of colors? :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. FFM: How do the Joelle blouses fit? Small or true to size?

    ReplyDelete
  79. beth: I really do LOVE finding I like so much! The fabric on this one, and the fact that it's sleeveless work really well for Florida, plus it looks great layered under jackets and cardigans, as well. I know it's not for everyone, but I personally love it...I hope they work out for you!

    ReplyDelete
  80. tammylee: Thank you so very much! Just what I needed to know. Now I can't wait to order this top! Thanks again for all of your help!

    ReplyDelete
  81. That should have been "finding something I like so much"...sorry...that's what I get for not proof reading!

    ReplyDelete
  82. blumre: I only ever received the Joelle Cami and I got it in a size 0. I had ordered the Joelle Blouse in a 2 (never received it), as others had warned that it runs really big...that's why I'm afraid the size 4 won't work for me. :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. FFM: Gotcha... guess the size 4 wont work for me then :(. Too bad. Oh well I put it in my shopping cart and it disappeared. I can't wear cami's at work. But does the cami cinch in a lot at the waist or does it just appear to do so in the picture online?

  84. blumre: the Joelle cami doesn't cinch in that much at the waist...maybe if I it came in a -0 it would? It really is pretty, and looks great under jackets and cardigans...I actually prefer it that way, as it does help cinch the waist in more. :)

    ReplyDelete
  85. OT - Have any of you seen the dream argyle crewneck sweater? I'm not crazy about 3/4 sleeves on a crewneck sweater, but I'm a sucker for argyle. :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. amy: Same thing happened to me, I bought the royal violet dream v neck last year, and it pilled very quickly. I will also avoid buying them in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Bought the dream tie caridgan in Honey Glaze and I am wearing it for the first time today and getting a TON of compliments! I am not one for tie fronts-- but there is a certain elegance about this sweater that I love.... I actually have it paired with a pink t (I actually had people come up to me LOVING the color combo) -- it may sound odd-- but I paired it with the J.Crew silk patchwork flats (88496) and it looks lovely.... While I typically wait for the dream swaters to go on sale--- I definitely see this style selling quickly!

    ReplyDelete
  88. ffm: Did you mention there are new colors available in the Elizabeth halter?

    ReplyDelete
  89. FFM: Thanks for giving the heads up that J Crew sometimes will charge the pending $1 charge if they owe me credit. I was starting to get worried. I'm expecting shipping and my student discount on my last phone order to be refunded to me.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I went to check out the new J. Crew at the Dallas Galleria, and tried on several things, bought a few things. Here is my review:

Dream Tie Cardigan: I will have to try this one again. Even in an XS, it didn't lie flat against my body when tied. Cute, but doesn't quite fit me correctly.

Matchstick Jeans: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these!!!! I can't believe I hadn't ever tried them before. I am a pear shape, and these were so flattering. They suck in your hips and thighs in all the right places and are so comfy and slimming. I bought these in the short length, which, being 5'5", is the perfect length for wearing with flats.

High-Heel Flare Jeans: Ugh, not so flattering at all. They emphasize the hips, thighs, and butt. Not good if you are a pear. They didn't even look good on the mannequins in the window!

Crystal Button Bird's Eye Cardigan in Heather Silver: LOVE this too! The buttons are so beautiful. I didn't buy this, but I definitely will soon. The fit is perfect.

Watercolor Floral Rosette Cami: My store only had the blue color, and only in a size zero, and I probably could have used a size 2. Nevertheless, I think it rose up a little too high on the chest and I didn't like how it was snug at the top of the chest and then billowed out a ton. Side note: it was marked as $88 at the store, and it is $98 online.

Cotton Taffeta Belle Skirt in Buttercup: Love it! I am not a skirt girl, and really don't have much use for them, as I just finished up a degree in nursing, and will be wearing scrubs for work, and will be pretty casual when I'm not at work. However, I can see so many possibilities for this cute skirt. I can see myself wearing it out for drinks, to the movies, and to wedding and baby showers. I normally wear a size 4 in fitted skirts at J. Crew, but this one, I was able to size down to a 2. Yes, I totally bought this one!

Ruffle Henley: I can't describe to you how much I love this tee! $45 is a little more than I'd like to spend for a knit top, but this was just so beautiful, I couldn't resist. I want it in every color. I also love how you can unbutton it as much or as little as you want to show a tiny bit of cleavage to make it sexier for nighttime. I can see this tucked in to the belle skirt for a casual chic look.

Wool Herringbone Fiona in Grey: I'm not totally in love with it, but I don't hate it either. I bought it because it's the perfect weight for late Fall in Texas, because it doesn't get that cold here. It wasn't on sale either. I'll see if I like it more as the days go on, and if not, I'll just take it back.

Metallic Gold Skinny belt: Cute. I bought it.

Silk/Cotton Elizabeth-like Halter: I love the fabric, and it is especially pretty in Bright Rhubarb. I might buy this later on.

Cashmere Taylor Dress in Brilliant Blue: $238, part of the J. Crew Collection; not available online as of yet. This dress is beautiful. It is fitted, scoop neck with sleeves that are just slightly longer than short sleeve. Ribbing at the waist, neckline, and sleeves. Felt applique flowers with beading detail at the waist. I really like this dress, but I have nowhere to wear it. I do think it is priced pretty well, considering the beautiful fit and the fact that it's cashmere. It could go from work to evening cocktails.

Kelsey Tank Dress: Cute, but very short. It seems like it would be a wear-to-work type dress, but the length makes it seem almost inappropriate. I like the way it is styled online and in-store with a button-down shirt underneath, but in person, it looks sloppy, because you can see the outline of the shirt hem under the dress.

Cashmere Argyle Vest: Even in an XS, this was really long and loose fitting.

Hmm, I think that pretty much covers it!

By the way, those who have purchased the khaki Tuesday Trench that is now on sale: How is the fit? Do you like it? And what stores is it being offered at 40% off? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  91. So I went and tried it on again, in navy and honey glaze. The navy was itchy and the honey glaze was not. In addition the navy ran smaller than the honey glaze. I was a S in the navy and an XS in the honey glaze. Anyone else with the same experience? What do you do if you want to order eggplant?

    ReplyDelete
  92. OT but has anyone tried on the Flowy jersey bateau dress (95804) yet?

    ReplyDelete
  93. I almost forgot, I also tried the Andrea Jacket. I really wanted to like this, but it just looked strange on me. Perhaps it was too tight in the shoulders. I might try it on again in the future in a larger size.

    ReplyDelete
  94. tammylee: Yes there are new colors available in the Elizabeth and the style is different now, too...it comes in Bright Rhubarb, Dark Slate, Navy and Ivory(not new colors), a pretty Orange, and a Purple color...those are all they had available at my store. I posted a pic of the new style in the Bright Rhubarb that I just purchased: Click Here. . :)

    ReplyDelete
  95. ffm: Thanks, the new version is really pretty. I wish they had it in my store or online.

    ReplyDelete
  96. ffm: I called to see if I could order a new Elizabeth, but the rep said it's a retail only item and will be only in select stores. I think I'l call your store and order one - which city are you in again?

Also, did you go with the same size that you have in the orignal Elizabeth?

    Thank you@

    ReplyDelete
  97. tammylee: My store is in Mall at Millenia in Orlando (I'm in a city outside of Orlando)...the number is 407-226-9732. I purchased an XS which is what I wear in the other Elizabeth, as well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. ffm: remind me again how much the new Elizabeth is? The same as the "old" one? I hope my store is one that got it b/c I'd love to try it on.

    ReplyDelete
  99. The lovely model looks tall, thin...and a little pregnant!

    ReplyDelete
  100. math teacher: it is $88, but then you also get the educator discount...they rarely go on sale, either. I just *happened* upon my Navy Elizabeth in the sale section last month and got it for $38, but that is really rare to find it in my size AND on sale. This one is also MACHINE WASHABLE and the ruffles lay well under a cardigan, which makes it even MORE appealing. :)

    ReplyDelete
  101. ffm: machine washable is terrific! I avoid anything silk since I don't like to dry clean. And, that is the one thing I don't like about the tartine (and the fiona). If they have it in my store and it fits well, I may go for it. I agree that I think it would be adorable under a cardigan. I definitely won't be able to wear it alone to school, which is a bummer, but since it's usually like a freezer in my room, it's better with sleeves. I have to dress in layers b/c it's SO HOT in the afternoon when I leave, but yet cold in my room. They never seem to be able to get the temp right during the warm months. And, mine's not as cold as others!

I wish they'd ship from store to store, so that we don't have to actually buy the item without trying it on. Wouldn't that be a nice customer perk (okay, perk is not the word I'm looking for, but it will work). :)

    Sorry so long.

    ReplyDelete
  102. ashley: You and I are from the same area! I'm in a suburb of Dallas and have been dying to check out the new Galleria location! They took some of my favorite managers from my b&m. :( Oh well, at least now I have an "in" there too. ;)

Btw, do they have shoes at that location? I'm eyeing the serengeti midheels but really want to try them on first. (and would love a sale on them too.:))Also would love a black bubble necklace but only if its on sale and 40% off :)

    ReplyDelete
  103. weab: where was your primary B&M location? Mine was at Northpark. I think I recognized a few people from Northpark at the Galleria location. Overall they were very nice. The girl there who I think was the manager, was very very nice. I had a few returns, plus needed a price adjustment and 40% off my flamenco-dot marguerite dress, and she did it all with a smile, and didn't even have to call another store to verify the 40% off.

I can't remember if they had shoes at the Galleria or not. I want to say no, but I could be wrong. They had a good selection of clothing, but were out of a lot of things in my size (smalls, etc). I went to Northpark the next day, and there were some things I saw there that the Galleria had, and vice-versa.

    ReplyDelete
  104. ashley: my b&m is in Southlake. Amy and Laura came from my store and are great! In fact Laura drove a Lucille over to my b&m after she got off work for me to try it on and see it in person! I mean that is ABOVE and BEYOND! I never even asked anyone to do that.

Anyway, thanks for the info. I just may have to bite the bullet and order...we'll see.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Love it, love it, love it! I bought it at a B&M store after trying it on. I got both Gray and Navy, and I already wore the gray last week. I paired it with a pair of jeans, the navy pleated silky jersey top, a lime/celery type green scarf and the double-buckle brown belt. It was very comfy and warm while I was inside an over-air conditioned hospital on a rainy day - just perfect! I will also wear it to work in place of a jacket. It could easily be dressy with a skirt or nice trousers, or snuggly casual with jeans or chinos. If I still lived in Central California, it would definitely be a year-round layering piece, and here in New England, it is good on any day with temps below 72 for me. I would love to own the eggplant but I tend towards buying too many of the same piece.. Two I can justify - a third, I cannot! (Unless it was final sale with a huge coupon!) :-)

    ReplyDelete
  106. Thanks Webbysuzy and Layla for the tips and congrats - I will check out the Luxe Knit Gather Tee!!!

This is my third pregnancy - i have two boys already - think pink for me ladies! And then I can start buying crewcuts!

And I just want to say what a great post this is - so much information on the products!!! it's awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  107. Tammylee, I also bought the crystal button burdseye cardigan, and I can't wait to wear it! I am glad I saw it in the store and tried it on, or I may have passed it by. Photos don't do it justice. When it fits well in the shoulders, it's a very feminine, flattering style, and the buttons are just a lovely touch. Is it offered on the website yet? (After buying it, I could not find it online to add to Polyvore.) Maybe it's an in-store only item? Either way, I'm happy I got it, and I'm glad to hear someone else is enjoying it, too!
    Alisha

    ReplyDelete
  108. jcrewmama: Yes, the Crystal-button bird's-eye cardigan is online - that's where I got mine. Did you get black or silver? I have the silver and am considering get black too - I think the buttons stand out even more on the black.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Tammylee, I got the black/natural pattern, and it is really gorgeous on. It almost looks like Dark Navy rather than black, but would easily pass for either with different color trousers or skirt. I can't wait to wear it! I am so excited we're having a "cold spell" here, and I may even get to wear my striped tie-neck Katie sweater (black and white) to work tomorrow! :-) Joy

    Alisha

    ReplyDelete
  110. Oh, to have a "cold spell" here! We've got a cold front moving in on Wednesday, it's only suppose to get up to 90. :)

  111. the dream cardi arrived, however I didn't feel like hearing the complaints from my fiance about "another box from jcrew"
gosh, it's probably been a week or so!) So when I heard the big truck come up the block I darted out to him and I was able to intercept the ups guy and throw the box in my car...my fiance was attempting to fix our screen door in the back so was very focused but he says, oh ups was here? I said, no, no must have been the neighbor....So, the box sits, waiting for me....in my car! I may have to smuggle it in tomrrow! Crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Can anyone describe the papaya color? The Joelle came in that color. I should have saved previous catalogs.

    ReplyDelete
  113. caw -

Oh, wow! Been there, done that! (Just this past weekend, in fact!) The big brown truck delievered in Friday before my husband got home from work, but I didn't get to unpack and destroy the evidence in time, so I put it in th ecloset behind a winter coat and waited till he left for work this morning. The good news - the velvet ecole jacket in burgundy is just gorgeous! The bad news - the stretch corduroy skirt runs big and has to go back (for a smaller size, so I guess it's not all bad news.) J.Crew Anaonymous, anyone?

    Alisha

    ReplyDelete
  114. gigiofca: I have the papaya fiona and I would call it a soft coral. It's not pale, but it's not vibrant or bright. Maybe someone else can describe it better, b/c that's about the best I can do.

    ReplyDelete
  115. alisha, aren't you too a social worker, lol! the burgundy of the ecole does look pretty. I haven't seen it live, congrats....

    ReplyDelete
  116. caw -

Yes, I am a social worker, and an MSW at that - physician heal thyself! (Not happening here!) ;-)

    Alisha

    ReplyDelete
  117. math teacher - Thanks! That's how Papaya is showing up on my monitor. Not too bright, which is good. I can't decide between that and Moss in the Joelle. I think Moss would look really nice with gold jewelry, but the papaya could be nice, too. Maybe I'm leaning towards Moss. Hmmmmm

    ReplyDelete
  118. Haha Caw great story!!! I hope you get to try it on soon :)

Alisha- Welcome to another MSW! :) Thank god, I am always happy to hear other MSWs dress well and I am not the only one. There were a few in my master's program but not too many

    ReplyDelete
  119. I tried it in the store and thought it was great over camis and light tees. Just ordered it online in the Eggplant and Honey.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Blumre, didn't we already have the peasant skirt and tye-dye discussion, or was that caw and me? (Snort!) Yes, we are trendsetters among our peers! I have one (ONE!) coworker who is a fashion plate and shares my clothing passion. We compared shoes every morning until she left last week, and I miss her already! There are more well-dressed MSW's - they just hide well because they don't want to be spurned for not being dirt-poor, as if having cash and/or taste equates to not having the right mindset for the job. (Sorry - feeling a little bitter today! Snarkiness fading to black . . .)

I feel at home here, regardless of my credit card balance or the size of my closet!

    Alisha

    ReplyDelete
  121. Tammylee, after looking on thewebsite, I realize we're talking about 2 different sweates! The one in-store (which is NOT online) is a crewneck cardigan with a little ruffle up one side of the placket and around the neckline - kind of a cross between the pattern and buttons bird's eye cardi on the website, the shape of the dream ruffle herringbone and the ruffle collar on the tartine cardi. (See why it's so cute?) I wish it were online so everyone could see it - I'll have to take a picture and put it up on my blog!

    Alisha

    ReplyDelete
  122. Jcrewmamma: Only one co-worker! I hope she didn't leave iwth the classic burn-out. That is such a shame. I know when I was in my masters program for a while I kept it under wraps that I went to prep school and a very preppy college. When I finally let it out it was fine but I was scared at what everyone else would say.

In our diversity class my professor actually made everyone participate and asked what economic background everyone came from... I'll give you a hint, I was the only one in my division-- THAT SUCKED-- and I knew everyone was staring at me.

Its as if dressing well or not being dirt poor as a social worker means that you are an outcast for ever. It completley wrong and backwards... I can do good work dressed well!

Sorry everyone for the long and OT comment

    ReplyDelete
  123. The tie looks adorable - can't wait to try this on!

Anonymous brings up a good point - what to do for the prego J. Crew ladies?? Will J. Crew ever start a maternity line??

    ReplyDelete
  124. sooooo, the box was successfully smuggled in to my home early this am and I tried on my new dream tie cardi. I LOVE it...FFM and others, you are right, very flattering, the tie is much lower than it looks on line. I got the small, a smidge big but I think the xs will be too tight in the arms, I am happy with the small, who can bear an exchange anyway...the purple is eggplanty, and so pretty, hard to find the words exactly. Now I want more colors.

    ReplyDelete
  125. YAY CAW! That is so exciting :D

    ReplyDelete
  126. How many times do we have to hear about your prep school and money on every post? Goodness...give me a break. You have money, congratulations!

    ReplyDelete
  127. anon at 9:46am: That was really uncalled for.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Anon: I'm a social worker! I DONT MAKE $. I AM LIVING AT HOME TO SAVE $ this year! I was having a conversation with two other social workers and they don't seem to object to anything I said! Its hard to be a social worker and be part of certain demographics. They have echoed the same thing I said... why pick on me? Are you the same jerk that always goes after FFM? If you are, and I mean to say this as nicely as possible but please go somewhere else to waste your time. We are all nice to each other here. You seem to have an issue with that. If you want to uncloak yourself and give yourself a name thats fine and maybe we can discuss whatever your concerns are but this is insane.

    ReplyDelete
  129. blumre, you have no need to defend yourself, we were having a discussion and have every right to voice an opinion. People should just respect each other and if they have problems with what is said on this blog by anyone, go play somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  130. however, I should also point out that going to prep school doesnt mean anything about anyone's background. About 50% of my class was on some sort of financial assistance. Whether that was a sports scholarship, financial aid or they were academic sponsors... it doesnt matter. Anon: you assume too much that you obviously know NOTHING about.

    Thank you, caw!

Jcrewmommy you left the question in "J.Crew Email: Final Sale Updated" :)

  134. I have a tendancy to cinch tie closures very tightly, so I'd probably end up stretching out the fabric on this sweater. I prefer button cardigans, anyway.

    JCP buyer,
I wash my embossed shift in cold, and hang dry. Never had a problem, and it doesn't get weird wrinkles unless you forget it in the washer... I've done that once or twice ;)

    ReplyDelete
  135. I know this has been brought up before, but wouldn't it be great if we had an actual forum for this blog/group? :-)

  137. jcrewmommy: no problem. You know me (and probably everyone else who posts here) I love a good treasure hunt (why else would I love the sale section so much?)

    ReplyDelete
  138. LOVE the style HATE the fabric. The dream sweaters are the most itchy of all time! The cut of this sweater is great, but for $98, it better by 100% cashmere... I will wait this one out. Just too scratchy to stand!

    ReplyDelete
  139. Ashley - I just got my khaki Tuesday trench today and it was everything I hoped it would be. (phew!) Fit is pretty true to size - I got a 2, which is my usual, and it's great, even a teensy bit roomy, but I was only wearing a tank underneath. Will be great in the fall over sweaters. And for $85 I'm very happy with it. I called from the red phone (it's a catalog/.com only item) but they honored the 40% and 15% student. Hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  140. I have not tried it on but when I saw it I fell in love with it especially in that mustardy yellow shade - I believe its called 'honey glaze" ? I have to try it on to see if it will look okay on my body type.

    ReplyDelete
  141. For those looking for recommendations for this cardigan from someone who is busty...I'm a 36DD and just bought this cardigan today in store in navy...it is incredibly flattering, the tie really does hit lower on the body (right at my waist) and really emphasizes my hourglass figure. Would have bought a second cardigan except they did not have it in the purple colour in store, only the graphite, honey glaze and navy...will probably end up buying the plum in store later on when (if) it arrives...I bought my normal size (L) and this is such a classy piece, can easily be worn to work as well in place of a blazer. Would definetly recommend!

    ReplyDelete
  142. I just bought the tie cardigan in navy...and I love it...I wish it came in black. I am busty/curvy with a long torso and my regular size fits perfectly...its very flattering.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I have yet to purchase any jcrew dream sweaters, but I'm wondering what everyone thinks about the quality -- specifically do they pill much? I've purchased sweaters with a similar fiber content from other retailers and had problems, so just wondering about this. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I think the dream sweaters pill a good amount. So do the cambridge cables. I've had pretty good luck with all the merino I've gotten from J. Crew. It pills the least. I don't know about the cashmere.
