Uh... I don't know where to begin with this flat. I am a bit confused: what is that thing on the flat? Let me refer to the description on their site: "Simply irresistible, with an elegant toe and a quirky crystal ornament our designers call a "lollipop." (No one knows why, but everyone loves it.)"

Okay- I am going to have to disagree on that "simply irresistible" comment. I love flats (and I mean love too!) I think I wear J.Crew flats about 90% of the time. However, I can't say that I am lovin' this pair. :)

Also, that "quirky" ornament they call "lollipop" looks "off" to me. I can't quite narrow down the reason for my dislike of the "lollipop" either. Because up close, I like the sparkly crystal detail on the lollipop. Perhaps it is the shape that I find odd? (Maybe if the shape was a nice bow, I would like it more?)

What do you think of the Crystal-lollipop Satin Flats? Do you "love it" or would you "leave it"? If you do "love it", do you think you will order a pair of these flats?

  1. the "lollipop" is too high and too big... what is that thing? The flat actually has a great shape and could be quite cute. However, they completely ruined it by putting that monstrosity on there. By the way... that thing reminds me more of "jelly roll" than a "lollipop"--- either way neither one of them belongs on a shoe!

  2. I find this flat very odd- I think that the lollipop is too near the toe. HOWEVER, when I was paging through the September catalog I kept seeing a shoe I loved and every time I'd looked at it, I'd think, "Lollipop, what the heck?" BUT it was the heel, not the flat. I think the execution of the lollipop is MUCH better on the heel and I actually love it as a fresh spin on a bow. To me, it makes me think they designed the lollipop heel, it worked, and then they go, umm, let's make a flat too, stuck it on there and as we see, it did NOT work. But it did work in the heel, I swear! Check it out: Lollipop heel

  3. Not loving it either. The grey color doesn't work with many palettes. Also, the shape of the vamp looks very 80s and will squish your toes. Not great for a wider foot. Have you seen the peep-toe lollipop in olive quartz? It looks like camouflage.

  4. I love the heel version of this design, but it's just too much on the flat. I'd actually really like to see the heel version in one of their bright prints, I think it would be so over the top fabulous. Interestingly, the flat doesn't turn up on the site except through Alexis' link. It can't have sold out already?

  5. Uhm..I think I'll pass...actually reminds me more of a chocolate shaving....or cheese curl!

    ReplyDelete
  6. ummm, I picture my trouser leg getting caught on something that high and me falling on my face. Not to mention the over $200 price tag for a flat!!! Just curious, would anyone here ever pay full price for something like this?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Ugh- enough of the flats!
Especially hideous overpriced ones with silly details to catch a hem on.

I wouldn't wear these to garden in- they make Crocs look stylish.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Leave it...especially at that price! I agree with blumre that it looks more like a jelly roll than a lollipop.

    ReplyDelete
  9. That shoe is fugly. Looks like a sparkly grey frito fell on it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. mary: I love your description. LOL.

FFM: I have the Lucille coats laying side by side on my bed where they were hastily hidden by a huge blanket (I thought my husband had an early patient today...he didn't so I had to hide them quickly...grrrr). As soon as I "unveil" and try them on I'll let you know what I think...although both are STUNNING!

    ReplyDelete
  11. i agree that it's an odd shape. if it was a bow, i would totally buy a pair! as is, it's a 'leave it' for me.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I was in my store yesterday (all the fall merchandise was out, and it was kind of a cool day here in NJ...made me lustful for fall). That Lucille jacket is really stunning. How does it fit? I'm assuming sizing up would be a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I really like these when I see the picture--I like gray shoes too....in person might be different...however, I don't pay this much for JCrew shoes. They aren't made well enough to warrant the high price tag.

    ReplyDelete
  14. leave it! that does look like a jelly roll or one of those fruit roll ups.....and for the price? I like quirky jcrew things often but this is a leave for me!

    ReplyDelete
  15. mary: Which color Lucille did you see? The are both gorgeous, and I am agonizing over which one to keep. I got the Spicy Mustard when they first came out, but after seeing the Orange (and reading some reviews here) I decided that I would get that one as well and then make a decision once I saw them IRL.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I also got the Astrid (w/berries) in grey. This too is under the blanket so not sure how it looks either! LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I love them. i think they are different and the grey color is great also.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think I am the only one who likes them! Let me also say, I would not pay this much for them.

OT, I have the grey and black penelope flats (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them) but they give me blisters on the back of my heal? Does anyone have a remendy for this? I really do not want to return them but they kill!

    ReplyDelete
  19. At almost $300 I'd say leave it! The "lollipop" reminds me of the "shoe accessories" of old... kind of like clip-on earrings for your shoes. Also the colours are pretty drab

    ReplyDelete
  20. did someone say they saw the hammered silk tanks on sale in stores? it doesn't look like it online to me..

    ReplyDelete
  21. musthavejcrew: moleskin, moleskin moleskin. They may eventually break in. Pretty much every shoe I have ever owned/tried on gives me blisters (Yes I know how to buy shoes but I have Reynauds disease which makes it very easy for me to get blisters). Moleskin makes the world a better place... try it. Also I highly recommend the bandaids that make blisters go away.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anon: It was online, on sale yesterday morning. They may have already sold out. Try calling, they were 99.99

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi musthavejcrew, have you tried the bandaid blister stick? I looks like a mini deodorant stick but you put it on your foot before wearing blister creating shoes (and before blisters).
I usually try to wear new shoes around the house with gym socks first to break them in but I do keep the bandaid stick in my purse for just such emergencies.
Or you could try the old hockey player trick of using duct tape on your foot where you usually get blisters ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks blumre! I have never heard of this. So what do you do? Cut it and place around the heal inside the shoe? I also have a pair of burberry flats I do not wear because of this???

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks montorse! I will try that also! I knew you guys would know what to do!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hope it helps, the duct tape does work on those hidden parts like the side of your baby toe. However, the moleskin might be more discreet

    ReplyDelete
  27. musthavethecrew: nope you stick it to yourself but it is skin colored so its a lot harder to see and much more padded than duct tape and stays in place 100% better than band aids!

    ReplyDelete
  28. jcrewjunkie- i have to say, i am always so jealous when you tell us what you bought! you are so lucky! i have to ask, i apologize if this is rude, but how do you get away with spending so much on jcrew? i think i read in an old post that it was 20k last year? my husband would kill me (but i would be so happy)!

    ReplyDelete
  29. First off, I really don't find the lollipop flats attractive. Leave it!

Second, I am with blumre on moleskin. I go through rolls and rolls of it! It makes almost all of my non-flip flop or athletic shoes comfortable. You can get the generic kind or Dr. Scholls, but I usually buy the Dr. Scholls kind in bulk from CVS. It's definitely a footsaver!

Third, and OT, Banana Republic sent out an email this morning that they have further reduced some of their items, and gave a coupon for 15% off $125 with the code LABORDAY. You can also print this page out and take it to the store.

(If the above link doesn't work, let me know.)

    ReplyDelete
  30. anon@8:20- it was a different hammered silk tank on sale, the "soutache" (sp?) for $99. i think the other one is still full price.

    ReplyDelete
  31. thanks blumre & melissa - i see it now - the special collection hammered tank. pretty - but to much for a tank! I will wait for the other ones at $78 FP

  32. Jcrewjunkie

I saw the spicy mustard, which isn't really my color (although I like it on the hanger, I look terminal in most yellows). I just love the shape of that jacket. Like many other aficionadas, I've been watching Mad Men, and although I like the show, I worship the production designers--particularly the costume designers. I was in love from the opening credits!

The Lucille jacket is retro-fabulous! I feel I must have it, if I can find the orange. I'll keep an eye out for it and let you know if I see it in-store.

    ReplyDelete
  33. jcrewjunkie! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the orange Lucille! Also Yay! about the Astrid! I am SOOO crazy about mine! I'm so excited for you and can't wait to see your post! I hope you LOVE it!

musthavejcrew: I have those flats and LOVE them too! I just got them yesterday so I don't know if I'll have blister issues with them yet. However, I also use that "deoderant" looking thing from Bandaid and it works well. It's sort of like wiping wax onto your skin. I too keep a stick in my purse just in case!

Also, if you already have a blister, bandaid makes a "patch" called Advanced Healing for Blisters. It's like a rubber bandaid that is medicated to heal the blister and at the same time protects it from the rubbing of the shoe. It's flesh colored so totally discrete.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't like this shoe. Definitely looks like a chocolate curl on the toe, but not a cute one. This was definitely excuted better in the heel as someone pointed out.

I love the shoe tips! I have to second Montrose on the Band Aid brand deodorant stick thing. It really helps prevent discomfort & blisters.

    ReplyDelete
  35. anon @ 8:48: Oh trust me, my husband DOES lecture me about my spending! However, he knows that I only keep the items that I 100% will wear and get lots of usage out of. Additionally, he is in a business that really does depend, in part, on my looking good so I am quick to remind him of that when he mentions that "another #@*% J Crew box has arrived". :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. weab: You have the Astrid in Grey, don't you? I'm thinking that I am in love with it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ellis: I have to agree with you- I like the lollipop heel! I think its because the lollipop isn't so high on that heel shoe. :)

Blumre: I loved your jelly roll comment- Too funny!!! :)

MustHaveJCrew: Congrats on the penelope flats!!! As for blisters- I either wear trouser socks or use Dr.Scholls For Her Miracle Shield Anti Friction Stick (which really works too) :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. anon @9:46: Yes, I have it in the charcoal grey. I LOVE it! My mom bought one too and is so crazy about it. (She's a very chic/formal dresser.) So I will incorporate it into my lifestyle in a more casual way (ie with jeans) and she will most likely wear it with skirts. I think it's SO versatile and timeless. You can read more about it in the Product Review: Berry Astrid Jacket post.

  39. Mary, I actually sized down for Lucille. Went for 2 instead of my usual 4 and still had plenty of room left for sweater.
Sizing down created a more tailored fit for me.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Musthavejcrew:
I have Penelope flats too and here
    is my remedy for blisters:

    and here
    is another one:

    and here is one more:

    Hope it helps!

    ReplyDelete
  41. mary: Like slastena I too got the smallest size I could find in the Lucille. The fit (for me, size 0) is perfect and still leaves some room for a sweater. Oddly, the sleeves on the Orange come down longer on me than the sleeves on the Spicy Mustard. I have no clue as to why.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Slastena, THANK YOU! I am so excited to wear all the shoes I'm kept in my closet!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hm, re. Lucille, I ordered my regular size and now am wondering if I should have sized down. It said Classic Fit and my Pippa is a classic fit as well. I've been cursed with broad shoulders, so we shall see.

Incidentally, for any MadMen-style lovers, Anthro as some great retro looking sweaters and jackets. I grabbed this (a relative "steal" at $128) in red...at this rate, I'm going to be getting it at the same time as the Lucille, so I'll let you guys know how it compares, quality-wise:

    http://tinyurl.com/5amfxq

    ReplyDelete
  44. audrey: That red jacket is so pretty. I love it!! Also, let me know if you think the Lucille runs true to size or not (did you get the orange?)

    ReplyDelete
  45. jcrewjunkie: No, I got the spicy mustard. Well, it may be a moot point (about down-sizing),since they are sold out of the spicy mustard in 8 - unless they are playing a trick on me - LOL!

I hope Iike the Anthro jacket IRL. The jacket/sweater is unlined, but sheesh! At $128, I kept thinking - this is a bargain. Now how twisted is *that*?! :D

    ReplyDelete
  46. I thought the detail up close was fine but seeing it from far away made me wrinkle my nose. I didn't like it at all.

    ReplyDelete
  47. jcrewjunkie: Did you "unveil" yet? Should we call your house and tell your DH he needs to run out for an "emergency"? ;D

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the jacket(s)!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sorry to jump in the middle of the convo, but audrey: That jacket is SO cute! The color is perfect too! I have been looking for a deep red jacket/coat (remorse ever since I let the garnet copenhagen coat get away last year). And this one may be a lot more versatile! I know, it's so true that we must be getting numb to Jcrew's pricing because that $128 price does look good! ;)

Seriously jcrewjunkie, I'm with audrey, I can't wait to hear your thoughts! What do you think of the Astrid?

    ReplyDelete
  49. ((weab: I think she's standing in front of the mirror right now!)) :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Haaahaa audrey! Lol! :)

btw, do you know if they carry that jacket in the store? I have an anthro near me and would love to try it on for size. In fact, I may just give them a call and check...(The neckline is TOTALLY the Lucille. LOVE that!)

    ReplyDelete
  51. weab: Honestly, I didn't check. This was an impulse purchase (did I mention DH has been out of town on business for almost 6 days now? That gives you insight to my current state LOL!) last night. I ordered my regular size and then one size down...unfortunately, the fact that Anthro carries many different vendors makes the sizing thing a little wonky.

But you should call and see if your b&m has it - it seems like something they would want to display for Fall!

    ReplyDelete
  52. OK, I am really torn. The Spicy Mustard seems to be more of a Neutral shade that goes with many of the outfits that I currently have in my closet (purples, fuchsias, etc.). HOWEVER...the orange is such a stunningly beautiful shade (and goes with all my navys and off whites). Also, as I previously mentioned, the sleeves on the orange are just a tiny bit longer (on me) than the Spicy Mustard sleeves. I am going to my mom's and see what she says. Once my mother nixes something I can never wear it again! LOL.

Also, I got the Astrid in a 2P and the fit is perfect. If it is cool enough out on Friday I am wearing it with my destroyed jeans to my son's football game. :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm with chelsea, ellis, and alexis - love the heel version, but leave the flat!

    ReplyDelete
  54. audrey: I completely understand the mindset when the DH is out of town! :) I called anthro and they don't have it and doubt they'll be getting it. So I'll just wait to hear your thoughts on sizing, quality and weight of it. :)

jcrewjunkie: I SOOO can relate to your dilemma with the lucille! That's the very reason I wouldn't let myself order the orange one (feared I wouldn't be able to part with either one) ;) I get it!!! So I'll just tell you what my PS said.(keep in mind near of us have seen the orange one IRL so take it for what it's worth.) He said that mustard one is so much "chicer" and easier to wear and more of a "Wow" than the orange. I don't know if I agree with that, but there you go...this didn't quite convince me either. ;)

btw, I'm so glad you like the Astrid! Congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  55. weab: I have seen the Orange IRL (just got it yesterday, but couldn't unveil until DH left for the office). I tried on both for my mother, preparing to keep both because I am a horrible decision maker, and she said that the Orange looks too much like my Dark Poppy Classic Peacoat from last year (colorwise). Since I love, love, love that peacoat (and will, of course, be wearing it again this year) I don't want it to look like I have too many red or orange/red coats. The second thing she said was that the Spicy Mustard color seemed to be more versatile which goes hand in hand with what your PS said. So the Orange is going back, the Spicy Mustard will stay, and I am already lusting for this year's Classic Peacoat in Bright Blue!! LOL. One more thing that I am wondering about now is how the regular size Astrid would have fit. The petite stops right at the top of my hip, and I am wondering if I should get the regular so that it will go down just a bit further. How far down does your Astrid come? What about the sleeves? Decisions, decisions. :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. jcrewjunkie: Thanks for all your thoughts! I measured mine and it's 20" down the seam on the back from the very top to the bottom. I'm 5'2 and it hits at my high hip too. I wonder how many inches difference there is between the regular and petite. (I got it in the 2R) and I took a 0R in the lucille, to help gauge.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi -

The flat is a no for me.

I use the "padded tape" Slastena provided a link to - it stays in place well and you don't have to apply it each time you wear your shoes.

I tried the Astrid on IRL and liked it, but didn't love it. I kept questioning the practicality of a $250 jacket that I would probably wear 2 - 3 times/month. . . So far, no regrets in leaving it behind but that could all change tomorrow!

    ReplyDelete
  58. jcrewjunkie and weab: Thanks for sharing your thoughts no the Lucille. Jcrewjunkie, I know you (or your mom ;)!) already finalized the decision on the Lucille, but I have to say I concur in regards to versatility and timelessness of the spicy mustard. It strikes me as more of a chartreuse, which seems slightly easier to blend into wardrobes, and more of a "neutral". But the orange is gorg too....depends on what you have in your closet already. Jcj, interesting what your mom said about the orange Lucille - it must have a lot more red in it than it appears to on the website!

Weab, I'll keep you posted on the Anthro jacket!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Speaking of peacoats: do you think J.Crew will come out with one or two different colors for the classic peacoat? I'd really like a nice red, but they only have basics (white, black) and strange oranges and purples (I need it to go with everything.)

    ReplyDelete
  60. audrey: just wanted to chime in and say that i LOVE that anthro jacket...thanks for posting it! i've actually been looking for a great red sweater/jacket and that one looks great. i'm going to try to check that one out soon!! :)

p.s. i also have the lucille in spicy mustard...congrats, you're going to love it. if you have broad shoulders it will probably fit you perfectly...i like a more fitted shoulder look and the lucille is definitely a bit roomy in the shoulders...i love both colors but agree that the mustard is more versatile...

jcrewjunkie: what a tough decision you had to make!! the mustard is a very unique and versatile color esp. since you already have orange in your closet...i've been trying mine on a lot and it seems to go with just about everything...OMG if i had both lucilles in my house i might have been tempted to keep both like weab said ;)

    ReplyDelete
  61. I saw these shoes in the Sept. Vogue. While I am all for "shoe candy", pardon the pun, I will pass on these.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Slastena and jcrewjunkie

Thanks for the sizing information on Lucille--I LOVE when I can size down. Makes me feel thinner!

    ReplyDelete
  63. ccbmum: Thanks! I'm sort of worried that my closet will start looking like my mom's soon (she and my dad keep *everything*)...she has all these cute jackets from "back in the day". I'm so sad that I look like an ape when compared to her petite frame! Everything I'm attracted to these days is retro (and this was before MadMenMadness)...

I'm thinking the 10 on the Lucille will be okay. Honestly, I'm a strange fit -short, chesty with broad shoulders, boy hips. I never know what looks good until I try it on. I'm just a little sad that if I did have to size down, the 8 in spicy mustard isn't an option anymore (unless Jcrew is yanking my chain!).

    ReplyDelete
  64. OT: The denim Pencil Skirt came today! THAT WAS FAST... less than 48 hours!!!! AHHHmazing! I'm wearing it tomorrow. I look so darn hot it in it.

The sad thing was that when I got it someone had stuffed tons of cut out magnetic tags in the pockets! I called the store immediately to let them know of course. But I hate finding stuff like that. First of all it makes me angry that someone stole and then I realize how much I pay for the items and then I get even more bitter.... not that I would ever ever ever steal but still bitter that they got away with it! GRRRRR

BUT THRILLED WITH THE SKIRT. So glad I waited and so glad I got it! and for only $63!!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. blumre: That's awesome!! I wish we could post photos...you must look hawt! And what an awesome price too :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Audrey, I have the spicy mustard in size 8 that I was going to return because the color didn't workout for my hair/skin tone. E-mail me in you are interested. I just want what I paid for it. $285 plus 6% sales tax and a few dollars to ship to you. lfinazz1@yahoo.com

    ReplyDelete
  67. musthavecrew: That's awesome!! Thanks so much for the offer. I should get my jacket in a few days. Would it be too much for you to wait? I'll PM you...

    ReplyDelete
  68. The high heel version of this is MUCH cuter. This looks too much like genie shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  69. blumre: Yay! You got your skirt. I'm glad you love it. Isn't it the best denim pencil skirt? I just love the back, how it's different than a normal pencil skirt.

As far as shoes, I'm glad I waited on the penelope if they're giving people blisters. If you want to stretch your shoes a little, montrose is right to wear socks with them around the house, but wipe the inside with rubbing alcohol first - that will help with the stretching.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Math teacher-- Yes I am soooo excited to wear it tomorrow. I can't believe how fast it got here. I had tried it on in the store about a month ago and fell in love... and now I have it and I got it with all those discounts. It just makes me really happy and giddy. I would be wearing it right now.... but I have to go make A LOT OF PIE... my grandmother raided her orchard for me and now I am making pies for MMiller's birthday this weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  71. blumre: Happy pie making! :) And, enjoy yourself tomorrow looking hot! :P It didn't take me long to wear mine either.
