Inside J.Crew's Studio

Molly mentioned (in the "TWST Article on J.Crew's Growth" post) that she was looking at J.Crew's interactive "inside our studio" piece. I actually wanted to create a post about this for some time, so her comment inspired me to do so.

First, love the mood board- love, love, love it! The board includes muses from blossoms, to artists (like Picasso, Matisse, and Elizabeth Peyton), vintage leather, to beautiful autumn florals. I love getting to understand more of the inspirations behind certain looks.

The colors on here are just fantastic. I just want a whole new wardrobe with those colors, fabrics, and styles. Which I guess is J.Crew's purpose in showing us this- since that is exactly what the new Fall Collection has in store! ;) Looking at the mood board and then looking at their new Fall collection, its easy to see how one inspired the other.

What do you think of the mood board? Are you a fan of the inspirations that lead to the creations?

  1. I do enjoy looking at the creations that are put together in the lookbook...some are a little too "over the top" for my taste, and for what I actually wear, but from an artistic standpoint they are really unique. Btw...I keep forgetting to mention that Neiman Marcus has a dress on display that is almost identical to the one on page 16 of the online Lookbook...it's the brown and yellow one...I wonder who had the idea for the dress first?

  2. I went straight to Amazon and ordered an Elizabeth Peyton book. She is exactly 1 year older than me. I find her work inspiring because her subjects are totally pop culture, but her technique is quite lovely and colorful - and classic!

  3. I think that it is just another way that J Crew seems so classy. I love knowing the inspiration behind the clothing that I wear. :)

  4. FFM. I went and got a Google id just so I could thank you with a name! I was the with the 5 pocket trouser jean question. Thank you so much, I got them at the sale price!! I also bought 3 pleated silk jersey tops, the water color tank, the born shoes (which I CANNOT find) and loads more based on your recommendations over the past week. This blog is costing me a fortune!

  5. What does everyone think of the Soirée jacket? Worth $250. I think it's really pretty, especially in the heather silver color. But $250? Sorry if I missed conversatin about this already.

  6. I wonder when the other watercolor florals are coming out? As shown in mood board and on site (there is one with an orange, gold and purple that I'm dying for)

  7. musthavejcrew: WOW...I'm flattered that you got a Google I.D. just to thank me...it's truly appreciated. Congrats on all your purchases and great deals...I am glad I could be of help! :)

Btw...what happened with the Born shoes?

  9. jcrewbug: The Soiree jacket is actually on my wishlist! My store doesn't have it to try on, so I can't give sizing advice or anything...I'm not sure it's worth the $250...I'm personally going to wait for the price to be reduced. :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Which one is teh soiree? It's not on the site yet. TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  11. molly: The Soiree Jacket can be seen Here . It is actually in the Sweater section. :)

  13. Oh, that is cute! I have to be careful with ruffles and empire waisted things on my bod because I'm a bit fuller figured than you guys...

Do you have a polyvore with the jacket yet?

    ReplyDelete
  14. molly: I actually did make a Polyvore for this jacket awhile ago: Click Here . :)

  15. Ooooh, I want the Soiree jacket/sweater too! However, I cannot justify $250 for it. I am hoping it will still be available in the silver color in size XL when it does go on sale.

So far I have gotten the Sara dress in slate, which I really like, but it does seem a bit short for my 5'9" frame (even though the description says knee-length). I also got the ringspun cotton beaded flower tee, which I returned because I have a large chest and it made me look like I have uniboob (crewnecks sometimes do that). I have oredered the dream tie cardigan in eggplant but it was on backorder until Tuesday so I am still waiting for it to get out of "releasable" status.

There was a skirt in my September Lucky mag that I am wanting to get too when it is available (assuming it goes up to size 14, sometimes their skirts stop at 12----why??????), the "Bontecou" skirt. It looks really pretty. I also got my September Marie Claire yesterady and there was a pretty sweater dress featured with a v-neck that I have yet to see appear on the website. So many things to stalk!

Sadly my store never carries beyond size 12 or large so I always have to order online. This is a real pain and quite costly. I wish there was a better shipping rate, as I would buy more for sure. And yes, I know I can go to the store and order there but that kind of defeats the purpose and ease of online shopping from home.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Jacquelyn, I share your pain. I wear a 14 in most J Crew stuff, and sometimes a 16 on the bottom. Not only do I usually pay full price for everything (the bigger sizes go fast!), I almost always pay full shipping because I have no patience. I take a tremendous amount of stuff back to the store too - I figure that's what J Crew has to deal with if they only way I can try something on is to buy it first.

I love the skirt in that polyvore FFM. I think it would look gorgeous with a crisp white shirt and pearls. Unfortunately for me, it only goes up to 12. Maybe I could buy two 8s and sew them together LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Can anyone remember what the B&M price for the White denim bootcut jean was?

Also FFM, I had a problem with the bootcut jean pocket show through (only the front ones)(creating a slightly slutty look)... think I could have the pockets taken out and sewed shut? Anyone else have an opinion on this.

    ReplyDelete
  18. molly: I actually had a couple more Polyvore sets with that skirt in them, if you get the chance to look. :) You should call CS and ask what size they go up to, and also get the measurements for the largest they do make, as it seems to be one that you can actually size down for, if you are an hourglass.

    ReplyDelete
  19. blumre: I don't know what the price was on those jeans in the store, but my understanding was that it's 40% off of all sale items, and that is how I got the discount on my trouser jeans that are on sale on the website. :) I do think you could also get the pockets cut out and sewn shut...plus wearing nude color panties under white works WONDERS at avoiding the "slightly slutty" look. :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hmmm, maybe. Thanks for the encouragement FFM! I'm going to the 900 N. Michigan J Crew tomorrow at lunch to do some returns. Maybe - if they have one in the store - I will try on a 12! It can't hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  21. FFM: Yea... hmmm maybe I will call the store and ask for the sale price so i can order them since they didnt have anything smaller than a 31 in stores!

Of course I do the nude thong! That is an essential piece of clothing :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Molly, I am glad to know I am not the only one in this boat. I am wearing a size 16 J.Crew denim swing skirt (from the summer collection) right now. It is too big in the waist but I had to get a 16 to fit my post-baby hips (never had those before!). It is so frustrating to not find things in the store and to always have to pay full price. That is why I don't buy as much J.Crew as I would like. Plus, my local store is very small and the SA have been rude in the past about me returning so many web items. It got so bad that I just stopped purchasing, or I save my returns so if I am out of town to Phoenix (I live in Tucson and go up there every six weeks or so) I can do them up there and not feel so embarrassed. Or, I just send my husband in to do the returns, but even he says he has felt embarrassed and treated rudely by it.

I would love it if J.Crew started carrying a broader size range in store. I would definitely buy more!

I also wish more of their tops accomodated those with a bigger bust. Sometimes a 14 just won't work for me. It has gotten to the point where I don't even bother to by most shirts that have a side zip or button front because I don't want the hassle and disappointment of having to return them after paying the shipping charges.

    ReplyDelete
  23. blumre: I have pockets cut out all the time. I don't really every use those anyway. Plus, it should be complimentary if you have the jcrew card.

jcrewbug: I think the soiree jacket is adorable too. But I would hold off for the sale as ffm mentioned. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot of the early release fall items going on sale within the next few weeks since the September roll out is supposed to be the big one. I also feel that $250 for that is VERY steep. (Compared to the Lucille or andrea, it's way overpriced) imo:)

Molly: The floral belle skirt that you like in ffm's polyvore I ordered and is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I will post a review on fit, quality etc. when it arrives. I don't think we've had a review on it yet. (that I've seen anyway :)

btw, ffm you totally INSPIRE me to find the BEST prices I can get on the items I want. You have such a knack for finding a bargain it's like a gift. Thank you for reminding me that I don't have to buy everything at full price all the time! :) (and my husband thanks you, too ;)

oh, one more thing, I'm going to my b&m today to try the lucilles they had brought in for me. They really seem to want to sell me on it for some reason (even with the 20% coupon) I can't quite make sense of why though...I'll let you know how that goes.

    ReplyDelete
  24. weab: I thought it was only complimentary if the item was a non-sale item??

    ReplyDelete
  25. OK I just called and they are 69.99 and 40% off. They were out of my size so I can totally order online the store even told me to. Only problem is they arent showing up online grrrrr

    ReplyDelete
  26. blumre: gosh, I think that is right. I forgot you mentioned the jeans were marked down. Sorry...But, you never know, the wind might be blowing the right way that day and you may get a generous SA...(maybe the inconsistency can work in your favor ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jacquelyn, that's too bad about your store experience. I have had good luck. The store SA's have always been very gracious to me. If I go in with a huge return (which believe me, I have!!), I attempt to organize it well and warn them in advance that it's a large return. (I'm sure you do the same) One SA told me that sometimes people will bring in a return that is several orders all mixed together and the SA has to sort them out.

I had decent luck with mailing back items - until the recent upgrade and a 1600 dollar return of mine was lost. (I eventually was credited the proper amount, have no idea if J Crew actually found my box or not). Once the upgrade bugs are ironed out, I reccommend just mailing stuff back if you're not lucky enough to have gracious SAs in your store.

On that note, I've noticed that things on the site are getting better. The sale section especially.

    ReplyDelete
  28. blumre: why not try another store and have them sent to you if it's far?

    ReplyDelete
  29. blumre: Call and say you want to order item #91174, and see if they will let you do it that way. Even if they are showing as full price online, they are still on sale in your store, so should allow you the price match. Good luck...the us know what happens!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Weab: I am just concerned that the SA will say well they don't exist. Cause the store said the ones there are actually hip-slung and not boot-cut. The white boot-cut is full price online. So who knows! Arg!

    ReplyDelete
  31. weab: Thanks for the compliment! I'm glad to know that my comments are helping and inspiring you! :)
Be SURE to post on what you think about the Lucille!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks for all the feedback on the Soiree jacket. I'm compiling a list of must haves on this line because my birthday is coming up. I really like the Lucia jacket on sale but 209.99 is high for it I think. I have a dream tie cardigan in eggplant, a tartine in rhubarb and htr mushroom on my list so far. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. blumre: I'm planning to go to my local B&M store (either the one in Pentagon or Tysons); I'll check for you if they have the white denim bootcut. I can put it on hold for you, if they have it. =) Lemme know what specific size.

    ReplyDelete
  34. weab, ffm, jcrewbug: i don't understand why the soiree jacket is $250...i was shocked when i saw that too. like weab said, it's not a jacket...no lining. i wonder if it's because of the buttons? who knows :) i agree with ffm and weab...it will probably go on sale soon...definitely wait for that :)

weab: so you did end up getting the lucille? yay. i just ordered it yesterday from a store too. i'm hoping for the best color-wise :) i'm still worried about the spiced mustard color...but if it doesn't work out then i guess i can justify buying something else instead ;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Girls, I just got the BEST deal and I had to share!

I went to my B&M and they had 40% off the sale items. I used the red phone to order the Tuesday trench, Cotton-Silk Pintuck Tank in Light Citron (to replace the Joelle cami I never received) and a Silky Jersey Top. They gave me 40% off, plus 15% student discount, plus free shipping - I was absolutely giddy! My order total was $130 - wooohooo! So I picked up another Silky Jersey top and Metallic Leather Bow belt while I was in the store.

Love the red phone, and love you all for the enabling! :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. silver_lining: You already got the Tuesday trench for 40% off?!?!?! Ooooh....

    ReplyDelete
  37. ccbmum: The lucille is sort of a strange story. I had ordered the mustard from another store and then changed my mind about the color so I canceled the mustard and was waiting to see if I could find the orange in another store. It never happened.

Then the next thing I know, I'm at my b&m and they tell me they heard what happened from the other store and are sending someone to BRING TWO of the mustard ones (size 0 and 2) in to my b&m so I can see it in person! WHAT!?! I never asked them to do that. That's why I'm so confused about why they are going to such lengths to sell it to me. Are they just giving me good service or are they desperate for the sale? If that was the case, they would have sold me the Tuesday trench I came in for two days ago. But the DIDN'T they told me not to get that one and to wait to look at the Lucille first.

So now, I'm going in just to try on the mustard one. Confusing, I know. I'll let you ladies know what comes off all of this...

btw, ccbmum, please post your thoughts when yours comes in too!

    ReplyDelete
  38. E&SM - Yeah, it's $159.99 on the website, plus the 40% plus student discount made it like, $85.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The khaki colored one is 159.99 on sale right now. The navy and red color are still at full price.

    ReplyDelete
  40. silver_lining: Is it the wool Tuesday Trench or the canvas/chino looking one? I know the canvas one is on sale on the web.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Does anyone remember the post where we talked about J.Crew's new, wonky sizing? I would like to add favorite fit chinos to the list, if it's not already there!

I have a few pairs of sz. 2 chinos from summer / fall 2007 that fit like a dream (good in waist, slim thighs). I just tried on fall 2008 sz. 2's in the store and the waist was fine but the legs ... holy moly! They were so wide and baggy!! Has anyone else had this problem too?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah, the canvas one - I thought that one was the only one called "Tuesday", but checked .com and see that's not the case. Whoops!

    ReplyDelete
  43. E&SM: Thank you for offering that is very sweet of you. Don't dont have them hold it for me cause then I would have to pay for shipping. I am still thinking about it. I like the idea of white jeans but I cant wear them after 1 month from now so I dont know about it. If I dont like the over dyed cropped jeans that I just got I might consider it. But I'll wait a day or two for the cropped jeans to arrive (I got them in gray so we will see how I like them).

Melanie: Yes The chinos are totally out of whack size wise. I dont get it

    ReplyDelete
  44. Does anyone know if the lady day coats are likely to run out in stores by september? I'm tempted to order the sea salt online now as they're not in my local stores, but am holding out because of a chance that there might be a sale of last year's lady days (does this happen, and does anyone know if there were white ones?)

    ReplyDelete
  45. hi all.i want to ask anyone who wears j crew pants in regular size 0. is a 2p the same fit (waist and hip) as a regular size 0? i have been purchasing city fit, favorite fit all in regular 0, and the tailor fixes the hem. i just want to ask and see if anyone else purchases size 2p or 0p.

    ReplyDelete
  46. weab: it sounds like you are just experiencing great CS! :) at least i hope that is the case and not that the lucille is a hard jacket to sell because people don't like it ;) i know that slastena loves hers and there was someone else...sorry i can't remember who :). i personally love the style...we shall see about this spiced mustard though :)

blumre: i remember you mentioning and asking jcrew to bring back more cotton cashmere sweaters for women. i wish they would too! i have 2 of the jackie cardigans from spring '07 which are cotton/cashmere and they are so nice and soft. they feel like full cashmere...no pilling yet :) they are a little more slouchy than the current ones yet still fitted...maybe that's why they don't make them any more...because they don't hold their shape as well.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Does anyone know how the linen silk beach cardigans run? I just placed an order for one, but now I am worried that I should have sized down.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Michelle, they run true to size. But they dont close so if its a little small or a little big you should be OK. If you ordered the size you normally order in cardigans you should be OK

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thanks Blumre :) I feel better now. I got it for $35, so I guess I should be happy with whatever I get ;)

    ReplyDelete
  50. blumre and michelle: I tried on the cardigan and loved how soft it was and it's drape. But what I didn't like was the lack of button, interestingly. :)

Also, I have the v-neck 3/4 length sweaters from J.Crew with that same blend (linen-silk) and it has stretched out so much, it just hangs on me. I don't know if the cardigan will, because it's looser already, but I was dismayed because I loved them when I first got it and now I don't know how to get them back to their original shape.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Blumre: While I am thinking about it, I have to say that my experience on the phone was not that great. I called my 2 closest stores to see if they had any that I could hold, and neither had any left. I called CS and wanted to have them call the store to very the sale, and was told that they no longer do that but she would do it for me as a one-time courtesy. She also told me that I cannot use a free shipping code and my student discount together because they no longer allow more than one code, and the student discount is considered a code. She said she would do it for me this time, but not in the future. She also told me that not only are my items final sale, but that I can no longer change the order more than 20 minutes after I place it, and even then I can only change the credit card I used.

Overall I am very disappointed with how J.Crew is changing its policies, and I told the CSR as much. They pride themselves on customer service, but honestly I feel like unless I am buying a full price item I am being punished. It is such a hassle to get a good deal on anything anymore. I love J.Crew's clothes, but I am really wondering if it's worth all the trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Haha Melanie: i actually liked the lack of button on it. I think it made it drab beautifully. It is so casually chic. I could wear it in Greenwich on weekends or to work in the city during the week or I could wear it out at night. And I think it will transition wonderfully into early fall. I agree it was so soft and I felt immediately relaxed when I put I tried it on in the stores. I was waiting for it to go on sale... and $69.99 + 45% off +15% is an INCREDIBLE price! I cant wait for it to arrive!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Michelle: can I include that comment in the e-mail. I think you are very right!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Melanie: Oh no! Have you tried anything? Maybe a trip to the dry cleaners, or even a toss on the delicate setting in the dryer would help? As to the beach cardi, I actually like that it doesn't have a button. I am always cold, so I thought it would be a nice sort of shrug to keep with me in case I get a chill. I hope it doesn't stretch like the others though!

    ReplyDelete
  55. michelle: it felt very sturdy when on in the store. I dont think it will. Plus its linen and that holds up better than other knits. I cant wait to get it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Blumre: I am writing some comments on the email right now, so I can work it in if you'd like. I'll send it to you later on or maybe tomorrow like you suggested. I used to be angry, but it's really just saddening at this point :(

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hey all

Just wanted to let you know that I did have a small problem with my order from the faux 30% off sale--one of the items I ordered (egyptian cotton sweater) was not in the package, but a man's striped polo shirt was! I called CS, but they didn't have another sweater (they were very nice, btw), so I went to my b&m store to try to work it out. I was given a refund of both the item and the entire shipping fee, which I thought was nice (I did have to ask, though). However, I wasn't offered the special 20% card, nor did I see one anywhere.

My store (Short Hills Mall, NJ) did have some new sale items, including some summer stuff (fiona jackets in a papaya color, if anyone is still interested, some silk camis, cashmere shells, some jersey bateau dresses and some crinkle minis, among other things). It was 40% off.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Does anyone ordered or seen the new perfect tees?, the website says its a new weight for fall, I always found the light colored ones too see through.

    ReplyDelete
  59. anon @ 1:49: i saw the perfect t's in the store and they are much more substantial than the previous ones...basically they are a thicker material. they felt nice. i would guess that the light colored ones are much less see through than before...:)

    ReplyDelete
  60. FFM: I cannot find the born shoes. All I can find are sizes 10 and 11 and I need a 8 1/2 -9.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I also ordered the Lucille jacket and will give a review when it arrives. I LOVE the style but am unsure on the color. I also purchased 2 Dream tie cardigans (eggplant and grey)and they are SO AWESOME.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'd also love to get any insight as to when/if ever the fall peacoats from last year go on sale. I'm giving my bella to my 18-year old daughter entering college this fall and would love to get a similar replacement so I don't freeze my caboose this winter!

    ReplyDelete
  63. musthavejcrew: Which Born style are you looking for?

    ReplyDelete
  64. FFM: I am looking for the Welly Born that you have in your polyvore sets. I am the one who asked you a few days ago if they were comfortable because I'm a SAHM with a 2 and 4yr old. I need a cute "comfy" shoe to go with all of my j crew.

    ReplyDelete
  65. musthavejcrew: They have them in an 8 and 9 at Shoes.com: Click Here . Shoes.com has FREE SHIPPING and FREE RETURNS!!! YAY! :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. FFM: Thank you so much...I got the born welly shoes from shoes.com with 15% off code BTS08! I'm so happy!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Melanie: "Holy moly!" - LOL!

Michelle: That's awful how the CS was so strict with you. But you see, that's the exact thing that's really puzzling me with the CS of J.Crew lately. I've heard so many nice stories of great CS, and then I hear of instances like Michelle's. =( Is there some sort of quality control/consistency when it comes to the way calls are treated?

ccbmum & weab: I agree with you; I love the Lucille's style but am a little unsure of the color too. I had tried it on at a B&M; the SA said that I was lucky to be able to wear the color (spiced mustard). I was grateful, but I'm still not sure I can rock it, you know?

Ok, I've gotta go do some major damage control here at work. =P

    ReplyDelete
  68. musthavejcrew: Congratulations! You got a great, risk-free deal on the Wellys! Let me know what you think when you get them. Btw...if you care to venture out with another pair of Born...here is another pair I own and wear quite frequently: Click Here . I find them to be the most versatile and comfortable out of all the Born shoes I own...they are a great neutral that go with everything...the heel height is slightly lower than the Welly, too.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I thought that was a nice touch too. I really like Kate Spade's site for that reason as well. I have found great links to books, gallery shows, etc. I also love their "meet the designers" and inspiration boards. I hope Jcrew will keep it up. It will be fun to see how it evolves.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Oh, didn't see musthavejcrew's comment on the color of the Lucille! We're all in the "love the style, unsure of the color" boat!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I really like the look of the Lucille, and would personally opt for the Orangey color if I were to get it...probably too warm in Florida to ever wear it, though. The spicy mustardish color is nice, but I KNOW for CERTAIN that it would not look good on me...I just cannot wear that color at all.

    ReplyDelete
  72. @musthavejcrew--could you describe the eggplant in the dream tie cardigan? I'm an online-only shopper and am trying to get a good description of the color. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  73. jacquelyn: From one chesty girl to another, how does the sara dress fit? I have 2 of their other knit dresses that I have sized up for and I like the look of the sara dress, but it's not in my b&m to try on. I keep hoping it will show up there.

    ReplyDelete
  74. musthavejcrew-

Tell me you ordered the Orange Lucille!

I think we're all dying to know how bright it is.

    ReplyDelete
  75. The soiree looks similar to one I bought last year. It was called Hadley, I think??? Except it didnt have those great buttons.....

    ReplyDelete
  76. jacquelyn: I keep forgetting that the sara dress is only online. So, forget the part about me hoping to see it in store to try on. :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. math teacher: The sara dress fits my 38Ds really well. I was surprised. It has lots of stretch and room. The seam for the bust goes under the bust, which is where it should be...rather than up higher. I really like it, but I worry it may be a bit too short. Also, I like that I do not look pregnant in it as often happens with other empire waist dresses/tops.

    ReplyDelete
  78. jacquelyn: Do you mind my asking what size you bought? I'm a 36C and have bought a large in the last 2 knit dresses. As for length, I'm 5'4", so that's usually not a problem. Even when the dresses look short on the models, they usually come to my knee (or a little lower). :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Does anyone know the name of the jacket on the lower right hand side of the inspiration board?

Also, If anyone is still curious about the 'mystery ruffle jacket', it looked very much like the crewcuts girls jacket called 'velvet ruffle jacket'. Still don't know thw name though.

    ReplyDelete
  80. sweetlily: I mentioned somewhere that I wished they'd make a woman's jacket like the girl's crewcuts version. My store doesn't have it yet, but I will continue to look for it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. mathteacher-it looked very much like that, but I don't remember it being velvet-cute though. It was in the SF store.

    ReplyDelete
  82. sweetlily: I don't care if it's velvet. Actually, I might get more wear time out of another material since it's so warm here for so long, and not cold (relatively speaking) for very long.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think it's going to be a hit...now we just need to figure out what it is. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  84. I agree, as long as it's cute on. I wonder when it's going to be in the rest of the stores? I will definitely try it on if I ever see it.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Melanie: Do you know if your store (Palo Alto) is having 40% off all sale items? I want to call my store about the skirt you were talking about and see if I can get it on sale for 69.99 plus the additional 40% off. I'm thinking they might not take it though and it'd be great it they could call Palo Alto to verify the sale price and additional 40%. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Aly: Yes, my store was having an additional 40% off! I didn't get the 40% discount on the skirt, though, because they gave me the 20% off card instead. I didn't fuss/care about it since I had a lot of other items and saved more in the long run than I would have with one item being 40% off. Hope this helps!

I also noticed the featherweight merino sweater and cord jacket ended in .50 and thus do not seem part of the extra 40% off. Is that everyone's experience as well?

    ReplyDelete
  87. hi everyone- i am new to this blog but an avid shopper at jcrew, nonetheless. :)

i talked to a sales rep at the jcrew in soho, nyc today about applying the extra 40% discount and my student discount to my online orders. he said that if the discounts aren't applied before two weeks (i used the red phone), i should bring my receipt to the store and they'll correct it for me. has anyone else had this experience? do you think the sales rep will remember and keep his word?

    ReplyDelete
  88. I too am really interested in the spiced mustard Lucille but really concerned about the color. Is anyone that's purchased it a pale blonde?

Wondering if any of you think it's okay to wear thin trouser socks with your ballet flats or should it always be bare feet?

    ReplyDelete
  89. joanna: Did the amount they gave you not include the discounts? I called an order in today from work and they included the extra right there. My total reflected the 40%, 15% and free shipping. If not, definitely take your receipt back. Did you get the sa's name? That might help. If not, and you go back in before the receipt comes, get his name. You also might be able to get the credit over the phone. I have, although it takes longer then if they do it in store.

    ReplyDelete
  90. math teacher: I bought a size XL. It fits just right in the chest and back/shoulders, and mine are a bit broad.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Hexicon: I didn't see the Eggplant dream tie cardigan in the store just on-line but I will write a review as soon as it comes. I do have the grey in-hand and it is BEAUTIFUL. I also bought the dark grey/black tee with the high heel to go underneath.

    ReplyDelete
  92. mathteacher: unfortunately i didn't get the SA's name. the customer service rep over the red phone said two weeks, which in my opinion, is a bit too long of a wait to get my credit back. every person i spoke to said something along the lines of "not being able to change the order" because i placed them so recently.

i didn't include the 40% or the 15% because i only discovered (through this blog) i could do that recently!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Jacquelyn: thanks for the size review. Maybe once it gets a mark down, I'll give it a try. Is it too low for me to wear to school (high school)?

Joanna: Two weeks does seem a long time to wait. Have you already put in for the refund? If not, I would either call or go to the store as soon as you get your receipt. And, they can't change an order after 20 minutes. Which is strange, but the way their new system works.

    ReplyDelete
  94. traci: i haven't seen the lucille in person yet (it will hopefully be on my doorstep soon) but i have medium to dark blond hair...i also think that skin tone has a lot to do with it - that's why this is such a tough color. i have fair skin with pink undertones and can do olives fairly well but i'm worried about this color because it reminds me of burnished olive from last year which i didn't like on me at all :) a few people on this blog have said that the color will work well for blonds so i am hopefull :) i hope this helps :0 by the way, i looked at your blog...what a cute family!

i think fabulousfloridamommy has light blond hair (am i right FFM...i remember from your previous profile pic.?). and tried it and didn't like it. ffm: did it go or not go with your hair/skin?

    ReplyDelete
  95. ccbmum and traci: I do have light blonde hair, but have not tried the Lucille. I do however think that the Spicy Mustard would not look good on me, and I would choose the orange, if I were to buy it. I do not look good in mustard, olive, or bright sour lemon yellow, but can wear golden yellow such as the Honey Glaze of the Andrea Jacket, and the orange hues are definitely my colors, so that is why I would purchase the Orange Lucille. Hope this helps. :)

  96. Can I just say that I have been really impressed with jcrew customer service lately? A couple of weeks ago, I emailed them asking about an order I placed where I wasn't able to get both my teacher discount AND a shipping code. They honored the shipping code and credited my card! Then yesterday, I called about 2 previous orders from July in which I hadn't applied my teacher discount (before I knew about it!) and they honored that as well! Way to go!

Also gals...does anyone here have the cotton taffeta belle skirt? I was so close to getting it and then hesitated bc I wasn't sure about the fabric. Is it stiff? Comfy? Any thoughts/advice?

How about the new yoga line? Anyone liking anything from it so far?

BTW...does anyone listen to Wake Up with Cosmo Radio on Sirius? They were talking about Jcrew personal shoppers the other day...

    ReplyDelete
  97. I was in the store today and saw the herringbone ruffle jackets that have been mentioned here. The SA told me it was a fiona and its on promo right now for either 158 or 148.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Here's my excellent CS experience for the day! I received an order I placed that other day for 2 final sale items. I was supposed to have the 30% off final sale, my 15% educator discount, and free shipping (from a previous issue). My order arrived today and I only had 1 item, but my receipt displayed the entire amount - no teacher discount and full shipping! I called CS (no wait to connect) and talked to a very nice woman. She went back and gave me 30% off, my 15% educator discount, and free shipping. In addition, she reordered my item that didn't ship (argyle hoody sweater)... overnighted it... and gave me my 30% and my 15% educator discount! SHE WAS AWESOME!

I was irritated at the mix-up, but it was handled admirably and I am happy that my sweater is still available :) YAY CS!

    ReplyDelete
  99. ccbmum and ffm: Thanks for your input. Oh and you two are pretty well convincing me that I really need the dream tie cardigan. :)

ccbmum: I'll be anxious to hear what you think when it arrives! Thanks for the compliment too! :)

I have a hard time with most of the neon-y type yellow greens that they're loving now like, citron, et others and I can't do burnished olive, honey glaze or saffron, etc either - so I'm skeptical. I just love the look of the jacket (fabric and style) 'though. Wish it came in several more colors, {sigh}.

    ReplyDelete
  100. traci: yellows are tough. there are only a couple that work for me and they're very light...one is i think daffodil (i found a perfect fit t from the store in that color). another was fresh lemon or something. there was also a lemon twist that i can get away with as a layer. ;) citron and burnished olive are awful on me. i'll let everyone know how spicy mustard works for me...i wish it came in more colors too :) maybe if we keep posting that we want more colors for this jacket they will make some one day.

    ReplyDelete
  101. math teacher: I would wear the Sara dress to wear I work (large company with a cube farm). I felt as though it had enough coverage.

appgal: re: the Belle skirt. I saw it in store a couple days ago and I immediately did the "wrinkle test." This means I grabbed it and scrunched it around my fist---I hate to be wrinkled so I always do this test. Anyway, the fabric was rather stiff and yes, it wrinkled---and held the wrinkles/crinkles.

  102. In case anyone is up in WA, I just called the Bellevue store and he said they do have the 40% off but they barely have anything marked down. And that Seattle is the same. Boooo, they never have good deals up here.

    ReplyDelete
  103. ccbmum: I love your "cozy chic" set on Polyvore. Do you know the color of the silk-cashmere wrap you put with it?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Confession: I caved and ordered the dream tie in the eggplant (I am really excited!!!!!!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Caw: Thats a great confession. Its a shame we are all such enablers.

I bet Jcrews profits are soaring with all of us ordering stuff every 4 seconds. This is such great free advertising for them!

    ReplyDelete
  106. I know right? I feel so guilty/elated at the same time. I was like, MUST HAVE this after hearing all the talk and looking at polyvore. I agree, blumre, this focus group is the best marketing, advertising that Jcrew could have hoped for! It's a win win for them, it's free, it it makes us order more.....okay, I feel better. Just give us free shipping!

    ReplyDelete
  107. If they were smart, they would give us a coupon code to say were are addicts from the blog, it would be interesting to track how many orders stem from this!

    ReplyDelete
  108. OH my wouldn't it be interesting to see how many orders they got in a 2 or 3 day period. I bet we would all go into such a frenzy!

    ReplyDelete
  109. traci: thank you for the compliment on the polyvore outfit :). i think that the scarf was a plum color but i don't see it on line any more :(

    ReplyDelete
  110. traci: actually, i just checked and the scarf is on sale now online...it's the wild berry one :)

    ReplyDelete
  111. @ Musthavejcrew: thanks--I'll look forward to your review and would love to hear from anyone who's seen the eggplant in person.

Here's the specific issue: Last fall I made the trek all the way up to the store specifically to buy the purple velvet Bella, and I walked right past it in the store--I thought it was brown! I know the eggplant won't be as brilliant as the royal violet but I would love an in-person review to make sure that the purple is distinct and not muddy. I was planning on getting the eggplant matching tank to layer with it.

    ReplyDelete
  112. jcrewbug: Out of curiosity, which store were you in that had the discounted Fiona? My store still had it for full-price. :)

    ReplyDelete
  113. @caw & blumre, it would be such a great idea if they gave the Aficionadas a private sale coupon. I would love the chance to prove that we really are some of their best customers :-)

And I'm still sore enough about the 20% in-store coupon that I dumped all my fall stuff out of my cart. (OK, I did use the free shipping code to order the persimmon scoop T today . . . ) I have to schlep up to the big city to buy a wedding present at the end of the month and *maybe* I'll choose something in person then, if there are any deals. (I've been approached about teaching a college con law class and I am about ready to do it just for the educator discount!)

    ReplyDelete
  114. Hexicon: The best sales are normally at the end of august! Two years ago I bought a summer-weight cashmere cable-knit sweater for 35 bucks! The best part is that it actually is great for winter too because I hate very heavy sweaters because they always make me too hot. I am sure you will find something at the end of the month.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Thanks Blumre, I hope that maybe there will even be a special or two on the fall stuff when I get there! (Of course if there were a good coupon between now and then I'd re-load my shopping bag . . . )

After some recent bad final sale decisions I've decided that I really need to go up to the stores more to try stuff on before buying, even though as girliegirl said the Seattle stores don't seem to carry much merchandise. Grrr, two solid hours of traffic . . . . I would much rather click a button online.

    ReplyDelete
  116. hexicon, musthavejcrew, and caw: I have actually seen and tried on the Dream Tie Cardigan in Dark Eggplant...I had gone in the store to purchase that color but it was only available in small and I need the XS. The color is a rich, decadent deep purple...the name really does match the color, and looks almost exactly like the website. It's definitely not muddy, nor does it look brown...it's quite frankly just gorgeous and will look FABULOUS with the dark charcoal grays that are predicted to be so prevelant this Fall/Winter. I WILL be getting one...that and the Honey Glaze Dream Tie...it is equally as rich and decadent in person. :)

  117. Hi all,

Did someone say the hammered silk was on sale in the store? Can someone confirm this? That would be awesome! I am, of course, going to the store after work even though I am supposed to be packing up my apartment!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Hi Everyone-

    Yay! Mystery solved.

It IS the Fiona Jacket, but it has long, full length sleeves, unlike the original Fiona. There is one up on Ebay as we speak. Just type in J Crew herringbone Fiona, and you should be able to find it. It is so cute!

    ReplyDelete
  119. ccbmum: Thanks! I see it now in the sale section. I just LOVE the look of it with the heather silver dream tie cardigan. So cute! I love gray/silver/charcoal with berry and purple.

    ReplyDelete
  120. ok ladies, I got the Lucille in Spicy mustard! I have to say the color is a bit neon-y. Definitely more so than honey glaze or burnished olive. Those, to me, are much more muted than the lucille. The PS was telling me that it has to do with the way this material reacts to the pigmenting. The spicy mustard of the lucille is different from spicy mustard on any of the sweaters I have and love. Those are also alot more muted.

The jacket/coat is a gorgeous cut. It's very chic and not as cumbersome or overwhelming as I expected on my 5'2 frame. It's also not nearly as heavy as I expected. More a midweight jacket.

The collar, of course, is the best part. It lays down nicely and is more drapey than expected. You can even sort of position it as you prefer, up higher against your neck like in the photos. Or down a little lower.

I have olive skin and dark hair and the SA were all telling me it doesn't look neon on me and seems more muted against my skin tone... could just be that they're incredibly polite. However, I bought it and really do think it's something I can wear all the time. Honestly, it's so beautiful and even if it does look a bit obvious, I can't wait to wear it. ;)

About the orange one, They haven't seen or heard of it in any of the stores yet but the majority of the employees, managers etc, guess it looks more like the orange of the herringbone fiona (fpr those of you who may have seen that already). Also a bit bright.

Anyway, I got a heads up that some of the cashmere items from this line will be going on sale next week! Not sure which ones yet. YAY more to look forward to! :)

Also, I did see the floral belle skirt (didn't try it on as I have one coming tomorrow) and It is SO cute! The colors are so great and versatile and show up more than on the web. Even has a bit of a sheen like the sateen pieces tend to. Gorgeous! I can't wait for mine to arrive!

Thanks to everyone, I will report from my store visit tonight!

  124. Weab-

Thanks for the great review. I'm dying to see the orange Lucille. I'm trying to avoid dropping 300.00just to get a look at it.....hope someone here buys one and is able to describe if the brightness level off the charts.

    ReplyDelete
  125. FFM, thanks for the eggplant review--that's exactly the info I needed. Now I just have to hold out for a coupon . . .

    ReplyDelete
  126. ffm-thanks for the report on the eggplant, if it actually looks like the color online that would be great! i do love the purple/charcoal combo-great, now I am tempted for other colors. Wah!
did it run big? I am usually a small and got the small but their sizing is wacko
weab-congrats on your lucille! I wonder what cash is going on sale...
hexicon-it must be so hard being so far from a B and M store, but consider yourself lucky in some ways. It's so hard to NOT buy something when you go into the store but much easier to dump the cart on line!

  128. sweetlily: Imagine a softly-colored pumpkin and that is the color the orange Fiona is. It's very pretty. :)

Also, I noticed that another person on this thread mentioned that the Fiona is on sale at their store? So you might not have to plunk down $300. :) I thought the jacket was $198 retail, how did you come up with 300?

    ReplyDelete
  129. Do any of you ladies know how the Olivia shell or new hammered tank fits? I'm worried that the Olivia will scoop down to my belly button. Anyone think it will be marked down soon?

    ReplyDelete
  130. weab: thank you for the info on the lucille! it sounds like such a fabulous style/cut. i'm glad that it's not like burnished olive...whew!! so it is different than say the spicy mustard of the lana top...ok...can't wait to check it out. i'm so intrigued...:)

traci: i love that color combo too (grey, plum). i actually have a similar colored scarf and sweater. i just bought the t shirt and love it. i wish that i had the green clutch though...i have been looking around for a cheaper version but have decided that nothing will be like the jcrew one and i might as well give in and just buy it...being that we're all enablers here, i will probably do so soon! :)

    ReplyDelete
  131. melanie: i've heard different pricing for that jacket. when i saw it at the San Francisco store i think it was $230...wierd (but i could be wrong). i've seen items with incorrect pricetags before at jcrew. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  132. Thanks Melanie-

The Fiona I think, is on sale in the store, but not the Lucille. I wish!

Your color description would be perfect for the Lucille...now I just need it to on sale.

    ReplyDelete
  133. weab: Congrats on the Lucille, and thanks for the review! Glad you like it...I'm sure you will look FAB in it, too!

caw: I sized down to the XS in the Dream Tie Cardi due to the waist, but the arms now just fit...I cannot wear anything under it but a tank or cami, otherwise it would look funny. If I had gone with the small it wouldn't have fit right in the waist (too big), and I like to have it fitted, so I went with the smaller size. :)

shannee: Unfortunately my store doesn't have any of the Hammered Tanks...I also wanted to try one on to find the correct size/fit. The Olivia looks like it plunges pretty low...the model in the pick definitely isn't wearing a bra, or maybe has on those low plunging bras made specifically for this type of top...it would definitely need a tank or cami under it unless you chose to go without a bra.

    ReplyDelete
  134. ccbmum: I have the dress version of the lana top and when I put the two up next to each other, the lana looks more golden. The lucille looks brighter like more of a greenish-yellow. The fabric really does hold the color differently.

btw, the mohair sheds a bit. Also, I usually do a 4P in jcrew jackets but took a 0 in this. The 0 fit just right with this one but the 0 of the Tuesday trench still looked like it hit me wrong so I still would have needed the petite in the trench. Hope this helps.

I do agree that its a tough color to pull off. I normally have no problems with all of jcrew's yellows, but this one does still scare me a bit ;)

    ReplyDelete
  135. melanie, ccbmum: I think I may have caused confusion over these jackets...the Lucille is still 285. The herringbone fiona in the stores right now I believe is marked at 198. (I had referenced the fiona for color comparison.)

ffm: Thanks! You'll have to tell us about the orange one if you decide to go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  136. ffm-thanks, hopefully the small will be okay...I don't think they have the purple nearby, but I may make a trip tomorrow to another one close by...

    ReplyDelete
  137. weab: Thanks for the clarification. :) Sorry if I caused anyone any confusion as well. :)

I did, out of curiosity, call the Valleyfair (Santa Clara, CA) store and they have the Fiona on promotion for $168 (about 15% off). When I bought it yesterday from the Palo Alto, CA store, it was full-price. Kinda weird but oh wells. Win some, lose some.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Weab- It is great to know that the jacket looks great on us shorter ladies. I myself am 5'2" and I was wondering if it would be too overpowering for my smaller frame.
    I'm so excited for you!!

    ReplyDelete
  139. laverte: Thanks! I know what you mean. That was also my concern. A lot of times, if I'm not careful, a jacket can end up wearing ME. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  140. melanie, what color wool fiona did you get? is it anything like the bella jacket?

    ReplyDelete
  141. Thanks FFM. I'd definitely wear a tank under the Olivia, don't want to flash anyone lol! I wonder if a button-up would work well under it..
I might just have to bite the bullet and order both online. I'm too impatient to wait for my store which has a habit of never getting the cute stuff anyway

    ReplyDelete
  142. Ok this is sad...I opened up the Jcrew home page and my 4yo walking by says: Mommy why are you going there, it's just going to crashing

    ReplyDelete
  143. Melanie: Yes, it's at the Westlake, Ohio store. I believe 158 or 148 for the herringbone fiona. They had three colors. Can't remember but like a brown, blackish gray and coral?? Don't quote me on that.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Is anyone else just loving the new peacock color? I seem to want it in everything. I bought the Watercolor floral rosette tank in the peacock color (not on-line, only store as of now) and it is beyond beautiful. FFM suggested it but my store did not have the on-line color (aged Cognac) so I tried on the peacock thinking I would order when I got home but I just fell in love with that blue. Just a FYI!

    ReplyDelete
  145. ffm: This is OT: I have noticed that on polyvore, you pair gold and pink shades together a lot. Do you actually wear that color combo? I love the look, but I don't know if I'd be brave enough to actually wear it. :) I do have one tee (Loft) that pairs those colors, and I love the shirt, but to wear those colors in solid versions, I'm just to chicken. :P

    ReplyDelete
  146. musthavejcrew: I am also loving the peacock color! However, I (like ffm) purchased the rosette tank in cognac. love the color combo of that one. Have you noticed the bright peacock hammered silk tank? This one is great too. (also another item set to arrive at my doorstep tomorrow...after three attempts to purchase it...arg!) But I know what you mean, there's a v-neck tee in the deep peacock that I'm forcing myself to wait on. :) How did you find the sizing on the rosette tank you bought?

    ReplyDelete
  147. Weab: I just saw the hammered tank and I REALLY want it in peacock! Let me know how it fits! I also want the Juliet patent-leather midheels in the peacock color but I am going to try and find a knock off somewhere. $200 is alot for a tready pair of heals for a SAHM!

I usually wear between a 6/8 and the rosette tank fit perfect in a 6. Saying that, it may run a hair big. I only say that because the Amelia tank in 6 ran a tad small on me.

Seriously I must have placed 4 orders today only!

    ReplyDelete
  148. Melanie: Thanks for telling me about your store. I've had a crazy day at work, so I'm only checking the blog now. I'm going to try calling my b&m tomorrow about the skirt. Hopefully, they'll honor the sale price at your store because I called about the sleeveless super 120s dress and the SA acted like I was crazy when I told him Fashion Valley's store had it on sale. He wouldn't check either.

I am so excited for some of the fall items to go on sale. I have a wishlist, which consists of web pages that I've bookmarked. It'd be great to go back to school, where I have no access to a b&m, with some goodies for the fall. Does anyone's store carry the hammered silk tank? My current local b&m is a lux store, but it doesn't have it. I love the schoolgirl cardigan and dream tie cardigan, which my store only has in gray and navy. I'm also stalking a couple of other sweaters and the ruffle fiona in the orange.

    ReplyDelete
  149. musthavejcrew: Those shoes are great! I'm also a SAHM and think that we earn a few little nice gifts for all our hard work (several times over even). But I completely agree with you on the price. I really can't justify paying that much for something that's not classic (no longevity) plus I don't know why this is but I couldn't pay that much for jcrew shoes. I guess I feel they are sort of "knock-offs" and I can buy the real deal on sale for that price...you know what I mean?

    ReplyDelete
  150. CAW: I got the gray herringbone, but loved all three of the colors. I just didn't think the other colors worked on me as well. Also (I know this is blasphemy!) but I don't think I ever saw the Bella jacket. Sorry I can't help you comparing. :( But I really like my Fiona, for what it's worth.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Aly: Good luck with the skirt! If worse comes to worse, seems like you could call my store and have them ship it to you. They might charge you shipping but since you save over half the original retail price, seems like a small price to pay if you really like it! I know I do, even without the extra 40% off. :)

    ReplyDelete
  152. musthavejcrew: what all did you order?

    ReplyDelete
  153. OMG! The peacock hammered silk tank is marked PARTIAL SHIPPED AGAIN!!! This is the third time. Why now? It was supposed to arrive tomorrow! AAHHAAHH!!!

    ReplyDelete
  154. melanie-thanks for the info! I may check it out
all-I think the peacock color is fab, I am not one who does blues a lot but this color is great.I love those shoes too but agree about being tooo $$$$- Funny because I think I may have a pair of old old velvet pants in this color in my basement because I thought the color was so "out"-not anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  155. Melanie: I called my store and they told me the skirt was ringing up to be 88.00 or full price. They're going to call the Palo Alto store when they open, but I'm definitely starting to think that I should ask the Palo Alto store to ship it to me directly. By the way, I was looking at this piece of paper that I got with my last order and it says "Did you know we offer... We'll Find it For You: Call any store or the catalog, tell us what you're looking for and we'll get back to you within 48 hours. Standard shipping's on us." I wonder if that will apply to the skirt. I really don't understand how pricing can vary from store to store. The SA at my store told me that the Palo Alto store prob has a different skirt, but how many blue skirts that look like the belle but shorter are there with a tie at the waist? I feel like it seems like a pretty unique item.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Aly: Yes, how many skirts are as you described and for the same price tag? :) That makes no sense at all! I really hope you get it. I even re-checked my receipt to make sure and it definitely shows $69.99. Good luck and keep us updated!

PS. While there, I noticed that there were not many yellows left and a good amount of blues, but since I'd already bought the blue, I didn't bother checking sizes. Hope you can find your size! Also, I wonder if stores would do a store-to-store price match? Never heard of it but you never know.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Melanie -- You should go back and get a price adjustment. One is definitely allowed within 7 days. Save that extra $40 on the wool Fiona. I got it for $158 in Pleasanton. You can have them call and verify if there is an issue. My SA told me when I picked up the jacket to try on. However, the guy that rang me up didn't know about the promo. I had to go back and have my receipt adjusted.

As some said in another thread it may go down to a lower price, but I didn't want to risk not getting one.

  158. Jacqueline/Molly,

I am size 14/16 as well, 5'9" so I need tall pants and j.crew doesn't make size 16 Tall, so I essentially can only buy skirts or capris as bottoms from j.crew.

J.Crew used to carry size 14 in the stores, and I noticed lately the items only going up to size 12 (even if a 14 is avail. online). I asked an SA about this and he said they are not really carrying 14 in the stores anymore; they rarely see them. Maybe only if it is a catalog return.

I am not sure if they stopped carrying 14 in the stores b/c it wasn't selling well, or if it's an image thing. If the latter, that's kind of insulting.
