The Great (Weekly) Exchange

This post (of weekly posts) is for individual members who want to swap/sell/share among yourselves. This post is where you can mention your items and outside listing/ auction site (like eBay and eCrater & the corresponding user ID). Please note: this posting is not for resellers.

Individual members can also request in this post, items that they are looking for and interested in buying. :)

Please note that any transactions are independent of this blog. (Especially since you will be using an outside listing/ auction site like eBay or eCrater.) I have no dealings or interactions with any of the potential communication, listings, or transactions. :) Moreover, please limit comments about items to swap/sell/share to the "Great (Weekly) Exchange" posts. (Refer to "A Quick Note to J.Crew Aficionadas" post.)

Do you have any items you would like to swap/sell/share among yourselves through your outside listing/auction site? Is there an item (or items) that you are looking for and interested in purchasing?

  1. Good morning: I have:

    1) J. Crew red halter beach dress, new, never worn with tags, size 12 petite. Ordered online and since it was final sale, I could not return it.

    Contact: Marie @ Mmley@aol.com

Would consider swap or sell or...make me an offer. Thanks!

  2. I hate when I take a gamble on a Final Sale item and it doesn't work out!

I have a Strapless Florence Dress in Classic Navy, size 12. It's gorgeous but was not very flattering on me.

    Here's my eBay auction:

  3. I am very curious about the $ amount of final sale stuff we Aficionadas have in our closet that we don't wear! After getting the cotton-silk pintuck tank last week that a)was totally ill-fitting, and b) was NOT the color on the website (the "light citron" looked soft and light on the website, and was traffic-sign/Post-It neon yellow when I opened the package), I've decided that final sale is dead to me.

  4. Silver lining: I know what you mean...the sour lemon is awful too...I ended up with the Katie sweater in strip in the yellow and it is so neon! as well as the Frances Blouse in sour lemon...yuck! It made me never want to buy final sale again:( The yellow looked nice online....

  5. I have never had a problem returning a final sale item. Just call and speak to customer service and explain. If the fit is horrible, the color looks different than online, etc... they will make a note in the order and allow you to return it in store or mail it back.

  6. Thanks, argyle - this will definitely be going back, even if I could get past the color, it is completely too big in the bust and shoulders!

  10. Any suggestions (FFM or anyone) on how to tone down the sour lemon color in the Katie striped jacket and the Frances Blouse...way too bright for me but I am stuck with them...I am thinking Navy or white bottoms but I really think tan bottoms would make the green/yellow even brighter...

  12. anon at 9:17 - I have the Frances blouse in sour lemon. I normally wear it wtih white bottoms or navy - I find that tones down the brightness of the top. When I first got it I thought it was way too bright for me but I've grown to love it - in the summer only! It really looks nice with white walking shorts, or white trousers. Try it out, you might be surprised. Even a pair of dark denims works...
Don't pair it with khaki. Its too bright for that.

    I've got a J Crew Cashmere Cardigan (size small)listed on ebay Item:180277905753

It's listed for about half of what I ended up paying on it for final sales. I've also got a few items from Anthropologie listed that I never got around to wearing.

  16. anon @9:17: If you still haven't worn the Katie Sweater Jacket and Frances blouse, then I would suggest returning them. The color that shows online is significantly different than what you aniticipated when making your purchase, and you wouldn't have bought them if you had known the true color. It is a legitimate reason for your return, and I think they will be understanding.

If you aren't able to return then I would suggest wearing white, navy, or cool graphite (pale gray) bottoms, as well as a white tank under the sweater jacket. I think you can wear them now, and then they will be nice next Spring, as well. Keep us posted as to how everything turns out, and good luck!

  17. I have a cashmere clementine cardigan in a size medium, brand new with tags, was a tiny bit too loose on me and final sale..
also the gathered rosette jersey top in navy Large. I grabbed it because I love it, but again too big...

also, about the neon yellows... I have the cashmere rosette cardigan in citron and it is definitely a much more neon shade than i was anticipating. i wear it with a navy or dark gray pencil skirt, and the silver metallic skinny belt. if you keep everything else really toned down and bland, it looks great.

    ReplyDelete
  18. a and ffm: thank you very much for your help with colors for bottoms and the possible return suggestion....I am liking the idea of white and navy.....but gray might be wonderful and just perfect to tone down the yellow! Also, like "a" said, I may be pleasantly surprised and it will grow on me....

  19. I didn't realize that it was possible to return a final sale item. I think I will give them a call today and see if they will help me out. I shouldn't have taken such a big gamble on a $130 dress!

I also bought the Tierney Kitten Heels on final sale and they are ADORABLE.

  20. Oh My....Is it too much to hope for after trying for almost 6 weeks...I may have my sea glass piper tank in an 8....I have a tracking number and everything....called and CS just gave it to me after calling the distribution center......I won't totally explode with happiness until it is in my hot little hands..but still....closer than the last 3 times I tried...

  21. I also have the Frances in sour lemon. At first I thought it was to bright for me but I have grown to really love it. I put a navy cardigan over it and it tones down the color a bit. I have been wearing it with dark denim and white pants and it looks great! I have gotten many compliments on the top.

  22. Thanks again for all the help with the sour lemon top color....I am just afraid that my hubby will be laughing at me when I first wear it....I am hoping to look so great he won't comment that he needs sunglasses:) Maybe it will help brighten up gray England....(it is sunny today though...

  30. FYI - I just called customer service about my Strapless Florence Dress that I bought on final sale. She said this was NOT a final sale item and could be returned, even though both my invoice and the packaging were stamped "Final Sale Items Cannot Be Returned". She said they've had a lot of problems lately with this wording being printed on items that are not actually final sale items. I guess I will find out if what she says is true when I try to take it back to the store.

  32. I ordered the Jackie cardigan in Rhubarb, which looks red on the website but when it arrived it is much more of a coral color. Now I'm wondering what color the Poppy Jackie cardigan is - because it looks coral on the website. Does anyone know? I really want something more in the red family rather than the pink/orange.

  33. Silver_lining: I know what you mean! I got the jackie sweater XS in sour lemon ( I probably should have known since I've seen "sour lemon" in other items) and the color was even close to the picture they showed. It's a lot more yellow and bright than the one on the picture, which is closer to a light mustard yellowish color. Very disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anon@7:45: Just saw you shared my horrible experience with the "sour lemon" too!

  35. Anon at 10:05, I thought the same thing of my hubby and was scared to wear it! Once I did though, I was shocked at how much he did like it! FFM brought up a great idea of pairing it with soft graphite pants - I have the city-fit buttery twill trousers in this colour and never thought of wearing them but that is such a good idea! I also think it looks nice paired with my navy kelly sweater jacket on top - the ruffled collar peeks out just so!

My favorite pairing though is with the white, white tank, and white pants. Looks so cool and refreshing on a hot summer day :)

Also, I was shocked when I got the colour in person - I thought it would be a nice pale subdued yellow - boy was I wrong! I got burned similarly when I purchased the Corrine Sweater Jacket in deep yellow - deep banana is more like it :)

  36. i dont have a picture of the rosette jersey top- it seems to be coming and going from the final sale page. but i could probably take one, if you leave your email address. i also have it in gray and its great because it looks cute and dressy for work etc but FEELS comfy like a t shirt.

I also have a cashmere shrunken shawl cardigan in a pink shade... i forget which. I wanted geranium and got talked into a more punch-like shade when the sales rep told me the geranium was more of a darker red.
    it's a size medium.

    ReplyDelete
  37. shelby-poppy is not true red either. It's more of a washed out orange red

  40. Thanks again everyone...I didn't mean to open a can of worms with my early morning post on the sour lemon color...This is too funny....but it makes me feel better...

Hey, Alexis...now we need a post on the JCrew colors that were misses, or not as pictured or something to that nature....I just can't imagine ALL our computer screens were off on this one....

Also, too funny "a" b/c you were thinking the same hubby thing I was....:)

    ReplyDelete
  41. girlinboston, i bought the cashmere shrunken shawl cardigan in geranium and its more like a pinky red, (I wanted a true red which is what it looked like to me on the website)...I hate how the colours look so different online vs. IRL!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Shelby - I bought the jackie cardigan in the same color! What are you going to do with it? I love jackie cardigans, but every time I look at it, I can feel my retinas being burned by the brightness of the color (which does NOT look the same as the color they show online).

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow...same thoughts on sour lemon, citron and other shades of yellow. I bought the tulip jacket in sour lemon and when I received the package, I was taken aback. It was such a different shade than what I expected. This shade makes me look almost gray..it is like standing in fluorescent light. UGH!!! And since it is a jacket..I cant quite layer it with something on top to tone it down.

FFM: any thoughts? since you seem to be our "inhouse" stylist..TIA

    ReplyDelete
  44. mom-nyc: my first thought would be to see if you are able to return it...the color is definitely more neon than it appears online, and it really is not what you were expecting when you made your purchase. If you aren't able to return then you could always try listing on Ebay, though I think there are already several of them on there.

If you can't return or simply decide to keep it, then my suggestion would be to pair it with a white tank, khakis, and silver accessories. I also think that it would be pretty with the cool graphite pants and a white tank. The key to wearing it will be to make it the focal point of the outfit since it is so bright, and keep everything else toned down. I believe jcrewjunkie said she wears her's with the Glitter Dot Linen Shorts and gold accessories, which would also be pretty. The summer is coming to an end, so you don't have much more time to wear it...it will be great for next Spring/Summer, though, and you may feel different about the color then. I hope this helps! Good luck and keep us posted! :)

  45. Shannee: Thanks for letting me know about the Poppy - that will save me from spending more money on something that I might not like.

Jennifer: I don't know what I will do yet - I'm going to try it on with a few things I have and see how I feel. The color does compliment most skin tones - but it just reminds me too much of some items I had from Express in high school! I think I was burned out on coral! It might have to go to Ebay:( I should've spent the extra $ on the new Deep Persimmon.

As far as everyone with the yellow items, I agree with FFM. I have seen the yellow and gray combo used a lot recently - it seems to be very popular.

    ReplyDelete
  46. ffm: thanks for the suggestions. I will definitely steer clear of yellow tones in my online purchases.

Again, OT I was REALLY tempted by the Andrea in honey glaze. But I decided no after my "sour lemon" experience. I know the two are entirely different shades/ colors...but I wanted a more subtle color for the Andrea. I would love a camel or a navy andrea and HOPE that they bring it out in other shades.

  60. I just went to the 45th and Madison J.Crew in NYC over lunch. They are still having the 40% off final sale.

Annette, I have the Lisa dress and some other cotton dresses from J.Crew. Since they are low-cut and I am a size D bra, I always put a camisole underneath. Just an idea.

OT, what do you guys think of the colored tights trend? J.Crew is selling them in deep peacock and honey glaze, see here:

    http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/accessories/hosiery/PRDOVR~97788/97788.jsp

BR is also selling them in purple and a similar blue. I just ordered them in purple since that seems to be the color of the season.

Curious if any of you polyvore mavens have put together any sets with colored tights.

  61. cass: Guess the colored tight trend has made its way across the ocean...I saw it all over Europe, esp. U.K. this past summer/fall 2007 and spring 2008.

I like them with the right outfit....I paired them with a slightly above the knee length floral dress and tall black boots.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Cass--Thanks for the tip. My problem with the Lisa dress is partly that it's low-cut, and partly that there just isn't enough space in the bust area! The seam sits right across my bust, instead of underneath, which makes the bottom part of the dress drape out from my tummy, making me look pregnant :( I might have to fool around with it some more though, because I do love the dress!

  69. annette -- The Lisa is supposed to be flowy. Maybe you just *think* you look pregnant because it's not more fitted. I love mine and I know what you mean about the seams being in the wrong place. I'm with cass -- play with it a bit and see if you can get it to work. It's so comfortable!

cass -- This morning I noticed a BR outfit with colored tights. This gray cowl neck dress and also this wine colored dress is paired with gray tights & shoes. I like the look, but it would have to be a subtle combo.

  72. Hi there,

RE: The Lisa dress. I found that wearing a cardigan that is close to the body helped with both the low-cutness as well creating a less maternity shape on me. I also have a bigger chest and this makes the dress more tailored looking when I need it to be!

I was a little hesitant (I thought I looked like a sprite bottle!) but I got SOOOO many compliments that day (many were from men--and you know it's good when a man compliments you!) 80. appgal,
I wear dark brown tights with dark brown knee-high boots. Since you only get a peek of color from the tights between your boots and your dress it doesn't look odd if the boot color is a little different from the tight color. Also you might be able to do a camel/beige color shoe if you also incorporate that lighter color somewhere else in your outfit.

    ReplyDelete
  81. anon @ 9:17 a.m.: I was wondering the exact same thing about the Sour Lemon Frances Blouse. I tried it on the other day and did not like the look at all.

  82. I'm late on the yellow conversation but I just got a perfect fit tee in citron and wore it with my light graphite butter twill trousers and loved it! I kept telling my husband how much I thought the colors looked great together.
On the colored tights trend, I love it. I love tights, why not have them in colors? Especially with black shoes, even with a peeptoe, looks great. A few years ago I wore a JCrew dress (don't know the name, yellow & white with circle applique ) with bright pink tights at a NYC art opening and got many compliments. I think the more subdued colors are more wearable, certainly.
Now if anyone has shoes in a size 11 (flats, kitten heel or heels) let me know!
Also, I am always on the look out for size 4Tall (or 2Tall) pants.
    Any size boy crewcuts too.
    Thanks.

  83. I thought I'd chime in. First, I love the yellow and gray combination! I have been looking for the perfect yellow top to wear with my favorite fit gray chinos. Second, I can remember wearing colored tights in high school, so I doubt if I'll be following this trend. I like the look, but it just brings back too many (bad) clothing memories! :P

  87. I know this is a long shot, but I'm looking for the Swiss Dot Dylan tank in navy in a size 8. I'm still kicking myself for not buying it this spring...

Kater: I haven't been to the Short Pump B&M lately so I can't attest to their current sale section, but I do like their store. Although it isn't very big, it usually has a large and varied sale section. Most of my great bargains have been scored there as opposed to my local B&M. Plus, I really like the staff! But right now, I just feel like none of the B&Ms have good sale sections...

  88. I luv the colored tights. I was tempted to buy the yellow and peacock a couple weeks ago when I saw them in store but decided to wait till the weather turns cool. I polyvored the yellow today. I think they are both pretty versatile, I especially like them with grey.
OT-Has anyone tried on the Trixie heels? Wondering if they are comfy and true to size? I keep reaching for them in my polyvore sets and I've decided I need all of the colors lol

  89. I have a 0 petite Double Cloth Lady Day Coat that's new with tags. The number on the tag is 79205. The color is royal violet. I bought it last year. It's like the one for sale on the site now, the only difference I see is where the lining has the orange piping/pocket, mine is yellow. Email me at melanieatlsuinla@yahoo.com if you're interested. I paid around $200 for it on sale, but will accept a reasonable offer. I haven't put this on eBay, but for reference my username is parkers1999 if you want to view my feedback. Thanks!

  90. Appgal: I wore these shoes last season with dark brown tights, and the combo looked good. I think the black trim on the shoes helped make the different shades of brown work together (side note: these shoes are a STEAL at $29; I paid $100 for them last year or whenever they originally came out. Always get compliments on them).

To those of you who were thinking about buying colored tights from J. Crew: Don't do it!! Go to your local Target instead and save yourself some money. They usually have good colors, textures, and patterns, and are less than J. Crew, which is good, since you will inevitably snag or rip your tights.

  91. Appgal...I have the Jacinda in Honey Glaze. It is a beauty! I always wear an xs in J Crew and was no different in this. I will tell you it is definitely more a sweater than a jacket. Hope this helps!

  92. its.a.southern.thing: thanks so much for the info about the richmond store! I think I'm definitely going to stop now, especially as I think someone was saying new merchandise would start to come in this week. So maybe new markdowns???

or wait - is the new stuff next week?

oh well, I'm still stopping I think...I just needed someone to tell me it was worth a shot...:)

    ReplyDelete
  93. pink1 (or anyone else who has the Jacinda): do you find that the honey glaze color goes well with a lot of things? Do you wear it more as a sweater-jacket (over other outfits) or do you wear it as part of an outfit?

    ReplyDelete
  94. appgal: I got the Jacinda in Honey Glaze too. It's awesome. Runs true to size if not slightly bigger in my opinion. Was a lot heavier than I expected, although not a jacket weight. hope that helps. I got it with gift and rewards cards but I think it would be worth the price right now.

    ReplyDelete
  95. appgal: this was the first item I purchased in honey glaze - it made me want to go out and get more. I'm the type that doesn't wear a lot of yellow but this color totally works for me. Looks awesome with dark jeans when i tried it on. It's been too warm to wear it yet. :(

  97. appgirl....too warm for me to wear too. When I do wear it I will either wear w/ a cami under it and jeans...or dress it up w/ black pants.

I'm obsessed w/ honey glaze. I got the tie sweater in it too. Such a great color for fall.

  100. This is a bit off-topic, but I'd love some advice.

I'm considering the wool Tuesday trench. My local store only has the regular sizes (and the navy color). The regular 0 is definitely too big (which is a bit odd, since the 0 bella is a wee bit tight across the bust for me). Does anyone know how much smaller the petite 0's are? Perhaps compared to other coats/jackets?

also, has anyone seen the persimmon color? I like the navy, but I love the idea of a deep red...I just worry that the actual item might be more orange (well, persimmons are orange!), and thus look awful on me.

I rarely purchase full-price items, so I'm being quite cautious with this one...

    ReplyDelete
  101. auryane, I have the Wool Tuesday trench. I am a petite, and I tried the regular size (8) on in the store. It was, as expected, too long, too wide, etc., but it seemed roomy enough that I decided not to size up when I ordered the petite. I got the 8 petite, and it fits beautifully. It is definitley NOT a full size smaller. It actually fits beautifully, and if I had sized up, I would have drowned in the 10Petite.

    Hope this helps!

  105. I have a Citrus Paisley Blazer in size 0 if anyone is interested. It is brand new in the wrap. The color is just too bright for me. ($49.99 plus shipping which is what I paid)

Shelby - I too ordered the jackie cardi in rhubarb. It looks more like papaya to me so I'm going to see if I can return it. I also received the Cristobal Patent Leather Flats which seems to run 1/2 size bigger than normal even though it's not stated on the website. I tried them on and could easily stick a finger in between my heel and the back of the shoe =(

On a brighter note, I received the Tuesday Trench in weathered stone as well as the Daisy Eyelet Jacket and love them both!!!
