Extra 30% Off Final Sale: Is it Back?

As many of you have pointed out (like JCrewBug in the "Love It or Leave It: Piqué Andrea jacket" post), J.Crew is offering 30% off their final sale with promotion code EXTRA30. There is no mention when this offer expires on their website, which makes me wonder if this "additional percent off sale" is a "mistake" like last time or a promotion being 100% offered.

UPDATE: "Thanks!" to hdayton who sent me the email (shown below) which shows that this promotion expires 8/18/08.
Also, "thanks!" to Priya in this post who let us know about the expiration date of this promotion as well. :)

Are you finding the 30% off being discounted with no issues? How do you feel about the additional 30% off final sale now being a separate code (whereas before it was a "given" discount automatically applied, thus allowing another coupon code like free shipping to be used)? Did you receive the email about the 30% off final sale (unfortunately, I did not)?

P.S. I just arrived home from my conference (and completely jet-lagged too! ;) ) For those who asked, my presentation went well. I am also really thankful for all the well-wishes and understanding I received while I was away! :)

  1. I'm so glad it went well alexis! welcome back - we missed your comments, although you did an amazing job with continuing to post new topics everyday!

  2. The e-mail I got said the extra 30% was vailed until Monday at 10pm ET.

  3. I'm not a fan of the code instead of the auto deduction. In the past, the 30% sales always got me on the site and I would buy full price and sale items, knowing I could use a free ship code. Having to pay $15-30+ in shipping makes it alot easier to resist marked down items

  4. Hey everyone! I have a question about a sale item -- anyone own the linen ruffle cardigan? I was thinking about ordering in light citron and would love to hear thoughts. I also have the Avery cardigan in my shopping bag - I already own ivory and was going to get bright carribean - it's so delicate and feminine! As I posted before, I am pregnant, so sticking with cardigans that I can still layer and leave open!!!

  5. Welcome back, glad everything went well. Get some rest, jet lag completely blows! Thanks for being so on top of the blog while you were away. It must feel like a second job!

P.S. Did you hit up the a Jcrew while you were gone?

  6. Kater: Thanks so much- I am really happy to be back home! :) There is something about sleeping in my own bed that I really miss while away. ;)

Priya: Thanks for letting me know!

Shannee: Totally agree with you that I am not a fan of the new code system for final sale's additional percent off now.

  7. Blumre: Thanks for the nice words! :) I dragged my husband not only to the conference, but to 4 J.Crew's in the area! ;)

I got some really great items- including the silk Elizabeth halter in white for just $15! There was only that one in the store- but if there was more than one I would have definitely put it on hold for another J.Crew Aficionada to get it. :)

  8. Welcome back, Alexis! What a score on the Elizabeth. And you are a true aficionada for hitting 4 b&ms! I love it.

Boo on unstackable codes. I don't like it. The high shipping offsets the bargain price. I also don't like the new format of website. I don't want to search by category. I preferred searching by XS/S, etc... I'm sure this new system is here to stay and I'll get used to it, but I don't see what was so bad about the old one.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Alexis -- 15 dollars for the halter! What a steal - I love when stuff like that happens! I wonder why it was so discounted? It is still full price on the web. I am going tomorrow to my b&m to return the patent clea shoes (they were "final sale" but that was during the website disaster and they are refunding me anyway -- I ordered them for a wedding and they showed up 3 weeks late!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Alexis - $15?????? That is incredible! I AM SOOOO JEALOUS. Was it the one from last spring that had cotton and silk?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh, and Alexis - 4 stores - you ROCK! what a true fan!

  12. alexis: glad everything went well. I assume the nerves settled quickly? I hope so; my stomach butterflies are going crazy the whole time I have to talk to peers. :) And, I hope you had fun visiting 4 b&m's - how did your husband enjoy all that shopping? Congrats on your Elizabeth!

  13. I considered making a purchase today, but I just don't trust the site yet. The past two orders that I've made since the ominous update have both had missing items. Not only that, but I never received any emails telling me that the items were no longer available. I am getting my packages faster (placed an order on Monday and received it today), but the items that I really wanted were missing! BTW, that package was intercepted by DH who came home for lunch. He doesn't care that I shop, but I'd prefer that he didn't see the piles of clothes that come each week :) I laugh at the stories of how all of you hide boxes b/c I do the exact same thing! I used to shove them under my side of the bed, but my husband found six boxes the last time we organized and kind of flipped out...if he only knew that those were from one month rather than several!

On another note, has anyone been by the Lenox Square b&m lately? If so, how is the sale selection?

    ReplyDelete
  14. alexis: welcome back! we've missed you! I will say again how amazed I am at the fact you were still posting, not one, but MULTIPLE posts a day in the middle of your conference/moving! AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Dawn: If you're talking about the Lenox in Atlanta then their sale is relatively decent. Much better than all the other locations in Georgia but not as good as it was in Mid-July. Being a male, I focused more on those selections and saw some newer items/items that none of the other stores sell reduced, so I'm assuming the same might have been the same for females (though the markdowns were relatively small, the extra 40% helps). Either way, their selection is big enough to warrant a trip. I also find that the Perimeter mall seems to have a decent selection of more upscale and trendy items that can't be found anywhere else.

of course, if you're not mentioning the Lenox in Georgia, I apologize!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Dawn: good call on not trusting the site! Call in your orders!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Alexis: I just noticed that you had put up another note on the side column of the main page with policies and discount information! What a great idea! Now that people are new to the site or J.Crew can automatically find out discount information. You are so helpful to everyone! What a thoughtful and kind idea.

    ReplyDelete
  18. blumre: yeah, I stumbled upon this site last night and realized that I missed the coupon code SHOP on the order I made earlier that day. One phone call later, and this site helped me save $5.95.

    Cheers.

  19. OT, does anyone know how the linen-cotton scoopneck fits? I usually wear a small, but I find that in the tissue tees i had to get an xs. would this fit the same way? also, has anyone trie on the hammered silk tanks? I bought a couple, but my order has not shipped in over a week and a half, with no real explanation. thanks in advance dolls!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I placed an order in the morning, then I looked at the order for 10 mins, realizing that the extra 30% off just covered the shipping, which really means no discount. Then I canceled order. I've done this for many times now, either because I wasn't sure whether my order would actually arrive or I just hate to see the big $$$ for shipping fee. Now when I look at my account order history, all I see are many orders canceled by myself because I decided that I didn't have to buy those things when I had to pay for the shipping.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Welcome back Alexis. I dont know how you keep up with this blog with so many other things that are going on.

OT, how does the flowy bateau dress fit? It says fitted. I wear size 6-8 depending on fit. Is it really tightly fitted on top? TIA

  22. Welcome back Alexis! Hope your talk went fabulously!

Curiously, my husband got the 30% Off email, but I didn't. We opted against buying anything though... the website was still running slowly, so we didn't trust it! Don't want to get involved in some of the ordering nightmares we've heard about.

arghh!! i dont' understand what is going on there? why can't they charge me when items are shipped? I've had so many orders in the last little while, I dont' even know what they haven't charged me for (or what they say they haven't charged me for?) this is so frustrating. I'm tempted to call in but not in the mood for the poor CS reps that they have in the PM. Also i'm headed out of the country next week for 2-3 weeks and really don't want to come home to any unpleasant cc surprises. What do you think I should do, should I wait out the 24-48 hours and then check whether/not i've been charged and what i've been charged for? and do they have the right to charge me after the 24-48 hours have passed? (any lawyers here, please advise)

    thanks!!

  24. Alexis - Glad your "boring" conference alowed you to get a little shopping in. Your really are excellent at this blog and your additions to the comments were missed. Since I left CT on July 24th, I have visited 7 B&Ms, spoken on the phone with two others and visited 1 Outlet. My husband would die if he read that! It actually even makes me a little nauseous. Would have never tallied that if I had not read about your 4. Thanks (with heavy sarcasm)

Re: Shipping and stackable codes. I HATE to pay shipping, especially being a big J Crew shopper and card holder. Also, their prices for shipping are outrageous compared to other retail outlets.

Jewelry update - Many pieces this fall are going to be retail only, so if you see something in a lookbook or picture, do not assume you will see it on the web. Learned that last night at a store.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A- yea call in--- thats wrong of them to charge you so late and to do that. If you come home to any charges that weren't there its going to be just as much of a pain then to clean up as it is now... just get it over with. Better dealt with now than in 3 weeks.

Jenn: I laughed outloud at your tally because that is totally something I would do when I travel!! Haha WTG you!

    ReplyDelete
  26. a! I am freaking out! I knew they would be sure NOT to be undercharging! They would never knowingly give anything away for free! They can overcharge us all they want but they'll be d*&*%med before they let one red cent get past them!

    ReplyDelete
  27. So what should I do? What can I say? I'm not even sure what my rights are here...I've placed quite a few orders in the last month so I'm not even sure what order it relates to. I remember reading a merchant has x many number of months to charge you so I'm not sure if this is within Jcrew's rights. But all authorizations were removed from my card as of earlier today. So how can they re-authorize the cc??

  29. I would just call in and say "this is bad business" and see what they say. Sometimes that is all it takes... and ask to speak with a manager. Also say you are upset and distressed... people respond better to that then if you say you are angry

    ReplyDelete
  30. Alexis, I second what kater said!

Also, I don't like the fact that the extra % off isn't automatic. Like many people have said, it basically negates the price of shipping. I think I preferred it when the % off was less (15 or 20%) but it was automatic, so you could dig up a free shipping coupon to use, making it still a discount at the end of the day. Now, with the 30% off, you don't even get any discount at all, really, once you factor in shipping.

    ReplyDelete
  31. PS. And as many others have said, shipping has definitely stopped me from making a lot of purchases. Fine in my book, I am looking forward to fall! :) I am pretty sick of looking at the same old same old in the sale section anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Especially when they charge you TAX on shipping as well!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anonymous @ 9:18 pm -
My understanding about tax on shipping is that is the law in some states. Some retailers factor tax on shipping into the total tax price, some don't charge tax on shipping even though it's the law, and some itemize all of the different taxes. I found that out a few weeks ago unfortunately (I had no idea!)

  34. hi Anonymous at 6:12 PM! The halter blouse was on sale for like $29.99, plus the 40% off and then the educator's discount. It wasn't the new version with the lining or the pockets, but I was happy to get it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks Math Teacher for thinking of me. I actually was very nervous leading up to it. But after it was all done, I was relieved. I could enjoy the rest of the conference- which had its ups and downs.

I was able to sit in one where the professors got into a really heated debate and started calling each other hypocrites, and lying b*stards. I just thought it was awesome- since most of the presentations can be really boring! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Blumre: You caught that "policy" note on the right side of the main blog page quickly- I am impressed! :) I thought it would be easier for new comers to know about them.

    ReplyDelete
  37. A: your order situation sounds awful! I don't know why they can't charge you as items are shipped either. I would wait a business day and call J.Crew back. Also try to speak to a manager- who may have more authority/flexibility in their decision making. :) I hope your situation gets straightened out soon. (Also, I am assuming you are going on vacation- if so... congrats!!!) :)

Jenn-Brak: You are too much- visiting 7 stores! You got me beat. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Too bad its no longer true--- "15% off all purchases"

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I am so mad I could spit fire!

Thanks for snubbing me jcrew, really you are awesome! (sense the sarcasm)

    ReplyDelete
  39. alexis: I bet you did enjoy that presentation. A lot of educator's meetings are so boring, same old stuff over and over! So, a little excitement was great. And, so much fun to talk about later! :P

    ReplyDelete
  40. Alexis: Glad you are back and that all went well! Congrats on the Elizabeth...did you find any other fab deals?

I haven't ordered anything today with the extra30 and I didn't get the email, either. I did however order 3 items yesterday with the extra 40...a pair of cropped chinos and 2 jackie cardigans...so far they are still being processed for shipment...fingers crossed! I also hate that the extra % off isn't automatically deducted...it really makes the deal not a good deal when you still have to pay for shipping.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I live in Illinois and even though our sales tax recently went up to 10.25% (GULP!!!) I have never been charged tax on shipping. You can imagine how much 10.25% sales tax + shipping + tax on (ridiculously high)shipping fee adds on for me. I have been tempted to order with the extra30 code but I just cant do it. IL sales tax + shipping + IL sales tax on shipping is just too much for me! ARGH!

    ReplyDelete
  42. math_teacher: It was great to see some excitement from a usually boring crowd. I loved it! :)

FabulousFloridaMommy: Thanks for the nice well wishes while I was gone!!! :) I was able to get a whole bunch of t-shirts for $5.50. I got mutliples in basic colors like white, navy, black, and brown. I was also able to get the Solid Piper tank in soft fuschia for $15 too. (I have the white and blue version which I paid $30 and $40 respectively- so I was pretty pleased about that.)

    ReplyDelete
  43. alexis: sounds like you got some fantastic deals...I also have the piper but in Kelly Green and Ivory...love them! Also, I have a Polka Dot San Telmo on the way! YAY! :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. alexis: Welcome back! Thanks for posting while you were away on your trip. Also, congrats on getting such an amazing deal on the Elizabeth halter! It's such a classy piece. I really like its ruffles and the sleeveless design. Is it dry clean only or washable? I feel like you should get your own discount for having this blog. I have bought so many J Crew items ever since I started reading this blog. I end up thinking about J Crew all the time and checking out items that I normally would have never thought to try on. I really appreciate all the work you have put into this blog. Thanks :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Aly: Thanks for the nice words- its really nice of you and I appreciate it. ;) The Elizabeth halter is silk- so its dry clean only. But I wash it by hand with baby shampoo, and then towel dry, to avoid the dry cleaners. ;)

  46. I'm not too impressed with the idea of anything being a final sale when you order online. It's so archaic for an online retailer to not allow at *least* exchanges or store credits. I live nowhere near a store (about a 13 hour drive away). I am not willing to risk ordering something final sale (no matter how cheap) without having tried it on first.

I'd love to order a suit from the sale section, but what the heck would I do with it if it didn't fit right? It's a complete waste of money.

I also *hate* that so many things show up in the sale section, but when you click on them, they're regular price. I understand that the sale may have referred to a color that's now sold out & they haven't had a chance to update, BUT I have had this issue with suits, where I know for a fact that the suit didn't come in any additional colors than the ones shown, and none of the colors shown are on sale. WTF??

    ReplyDelete
  47. I just bought the solid piper online for a total of $19.05 with all my discounts and free shipping. I thought that was super for online....I already have 2 so I really needed that third one ha ha! Even though I am tall they fit me great and run true to size......so not all tall ladies need to beware this top:)

    ReplyDelete
  48. M. -- Even though it's "final sale", if there's really a problem with your item, CS might still help you out. I've exchanged FS items in the past, no questions asked. But it might just be the luck of the draw with which CS rep you get.

    ReplyDelete
  49. lauren> I explained the situation to an associate over the phone (that I wasn't 100% sure what my size was in their clothes, that I lived nowhere near a store, etc). I even asked if it's possible NOT to get the extra 30% off & have it be returnable. I was told flat-out, NO. No returns, no way, no how.

If it was defective, I'm sure they'd exchange it. But I have a feeling that the clothes not fitting wouldn't be a substantial enough "problem" for them to care.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Is the Elizabeth halter on sale in stores but not online? (sorry to be so clueless!) Does it run true to size?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Mom-NYC: The flowy bateau dress isn't as fitted on top since it is made of a jersey cotton (so it stretches- which I think is great!) I suggest ordering the same size as you would for J.Crew t-shirt tops. The bottom of the dress is a swingy a-line, so its great for pear shapes like me (and therefore you don't need to worry about sizing to much). I hope this helps! ;)

Anonymous at 2:41AM: I have the solid piper in three different versions as well! Too funny to find out you buy in multiples too- I love it! :)

MB: The Elizabeth Halther runs on the very large side. However, I wear it underneath other, more fitted, shirts. :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have used the EXTRA30 three times, with marvelous results!

I got the tivoli suede flats in black for $125 and free shipping last week, but before the price went down another 30$ (they fit true to size and the site pics don't do them justice), I was able to get the silk/cotton pintuck tank for 34$ (had to pay shipping on that- boo!), and today, the best score of all- I was able to get the mini-carbaby carryall in sour lemon that I have been lusting over since it came out for 97$!!! I did have to pay shipping, but $115 for a 200$ bag is a deal in my book.

I have placed 5 or 6 orders in the past few weeks online and I have not had any problems- I have gotten all my shipments timely and correct.

As a by-the-by, I went to the b&m to buy denim a couple weeks ago, as well as some hair accessories, and most of the sales associates were such jerks there I have convinced myself I am NOT going back. When I go to the mall, it is usually with my niece, or after work or a work-out, and even though I have the credit card, and use rewards cards, they treat me like they could care less, probably b/c I am not all dressed up just to try stuff on and buy things. It was so bad this last time I almost emailed HQ about my experience. Is this common for others?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm having issues... namely the 120s suiting dress comes up as the Abby Jacket instead when I click on it.
and the 120s high pencil skirt is advertised as 59.99 then you click on it, and none of the colors are available for that price...
How long is it going to take them to sort out their website issues??

    ReplyDelete
  54. I finally received this email yesterday afternoon...a full day and a half after it first went out...what's up with that?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Well after saying I was going to lay off the sale rack and wait for new items I jumped in and bought another washed favorite shirt. I scored the point-collar shirt in bicolor hairline stripe in navy. Looks great and for less than $20 when was originally $75 why not?

The great thing about these shirts is they are great for work or weekends. I'm wearing one now the sleeves rolled up and the bottom untucked and shorts. Switchng it up from polo shirts.

  56. I just received this email today. Before I was hours behind, now my emails are coming days behind. Why?
