J.Crew Email: Introducing the New Cafe Capri...

"Thanks!" to many of you who shared the following email J.Crew sent this morning.

The email features the New Café Capri (Item 34629; $79.50), described as
Our cream-of-the-crop café capri, updated in fresh-for-the-season hues with chic front pockets (it's an instant classic). Crafted in crisp, clean cotton with a hint of stretch, this is that one perfect-fitting piece to anchor your wardrobe.
I love that the pants come with pockets. Although, it's not like you would put anything in them besides your hands on occasion (to avoid any bulk with such form fitting pants). I also like the simplicity of the outfit's style. Simple, classic, and easy to wear.

What are your thoughts on the new version of J.Crew Capris? Have you tried them on or own them? If so, please share.

  1. I'm upset that they now have pockets, they were my favorite J Crew pants along with the Madison because they didn't have them.

  2. It never occurred to me that they didn't have pockets until I read this. I think the reason I liked the original cafe capri pants so much is that they were streamlined and formfitting. I'm wondering if the fit will be as flattering on me now that they've added pockets.

  3. I loved the colors of the old cafe capri's.... scooping them up in all the brights off of ebay! For me they were perfect because I could dress them up for work or tone it down for the weekend :)

  4. I ordered them and will try, but I think the pockets might be the deal killer for me. I do not like them, they add bulk and no matter what you an always see the outline of the pocket through the fabric. Sometimes I can have my tailor sew pockets shut and the pants are more wearable. I'll see when I get them.

  5. I'd like to try them but not sure when I'll get to a near by store.

  6. I just say no to pockets. They make me look wider than I really am, and I do NOT need that! Pass.

  7. No pockets was one reason I didn't like the original cafe capris. I bought the skimmers and the other capris (can't remember the name) because they had pockets. I really need pockets at school since I have to carry my room keys around. I saw these this past weekend, but didn't try them on. My ps said they weren't moving, but that's probably b/c we won't be wearing them until it warms up a little. He was not happy that they'd included pockets. Maybe they should have kept the original and again had another capri with pockets.

Milljcrew, I miss all the colors, too. Since the cafe capris are only available in neutral colors, I wonder if they'll have another capri in fashion colors. *fingers crossed*

  8. have a black pair and a "warm blush" pair from last spring (or the spring before..??) and love mine----with NO pockets!

  9. I don't necessarily mind pockets, the lollis have them and they don't bother me. I'm wondering about the sizing, lately I seem directly between a 2 and 4 in J Crew pants which is frustrating. I did order a pair of these, hopefully they'll be better.

  10. OT -- If you read the Let's Talk post on my blog today and happen to still have it open in a window on your computer, please copy/paste & email it to me. I've deleted it.

  11. so funny what you learn in our comments--I never buy pants without pockets--I always find them more flattering. I don't like it when the actual pocket continues down your leg or rear too far but always thought JC did a good job of girlifying the pockets. The new capri look like a good cut for me but too light weight to consider right now.

  12. Got my blog issue resolved! Thanks, woodley park-zoo.

As far as these pants. I like the clean look of the cafe capris w/out pockets. However, I find that pockets are quite handy and I *do* use them. So, I'd have to try them to see what I think.

  13. My favorites were the cocktail capri pants: pocekts for my keys at work and a little less form fitting. I hope they make a comeback, especially in the charcoal color!

  14. When I read the email about the pockets, I had to figure the cost to have the pockets sewn shut into the cost of the pants.

  15. I had/have several pairs of the old cafe capris, but they're a little worn looking now d/t a lot of wear. I like the look of these but will definitely wait for them to come down in price. They remind me of the Skimmers from last year which I love.

  16. When I saw the outfit in the catalog, I just loved it! I ordered a perfect-fit tee in Cerise and the New Cafe Capri's in Desert in a 6P (they are waitlisted). Now I just need to find shoes similar to the
Loxley buckle peep toes. I don't like last two ankle straps.

I happened to be in my B&M store doing returns and I tried them on in a 6 and a 4 and the 4 fit perfectly but were too long for me (I'm 5'2"). The salesperson said that the petite sizes are 1 smaller than the regular in pants.

  17. I don't like pockets as they always gape when you sit down and are too small to hold anything like keys, let alone my hands (and trust me I have small hands). With the exception of the looser fitting Cocktail Capri (which I love) I keep all my pockets sewn shut, that goes for the cotton double serge skirts from 09 and my 2 Studio twill pants. I find the gaping looks frumpy and breaks up what would otherwise be a sleek silhouette.

  18. I'm not crazy about capris. I'm tall and they tend to hit me in an odd spot so the few I have bought I've shortened or rolled up. Maybe it's because I have *ridiculously* skinny ankles - I can put my hand around my ankle and touch my thumb and middle finger together - because they just look odd on me. I prefer the style of pant that hits just below the knee, at the top of the calf. Usually I'd rather wear a skirt or shorts in the summer.

The email mentions that these are number 4 in a list of 11 must-have classics for 2011. What do you think of J.Crew's New Classics? I like the white blouse and the tote is nice, except for the studs. Of course the pencil skirt is one of my favorites pieces and I already have a Burberry quilted jacket that looks a lot more classic than the J.Crew version. Curious what others think of the list.

  19. XOXO, I think they've hit it as far as classics are concerned. The bad news for J. Crew is that those pieces are so classic, I already own them! I think many of us probably already have some version of those items.

Off topic, did anyone receive the small spring lookbook in the mail? It's women's wear on one side and you flip it over to view men's. I know a link to the spring pictures was posted some time ago. It was nice looking at them on paper. While I'm not crazy about the styling I was able to identify some individual pieces I think I'm going to like.

  20. I tried them on and didn't even notice the pockets. I have the "classic" cafe capris from a couple of years ago and they fit the same as these new ones. I am between a 2 and 4 and may take the 2 because they tend to stretch out a bit. They're more streamlined. I like these better because the opening at the bottom is not "flared" like the classic but has a skinnier opening, it that makes sense. Can't wait until they go on sale.

  21. I'm with math teacher; I need my pockets! I figure my behind is large enough that pockets aren't going to make a substantial difference anyway.
