JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

Preface: A big "thanks!" to Elaine (in this post) & Himmiefan (in this post) who both suggested a weekly "Help Style Me!" post about getting outfit advice from the JCA community. I think it is a fantastic idea. Hopefully this will help out our fellow JCAs with those hard-to-work-with J.Crew items! :)

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. This is an old item, but I'd like some advice on styling the chiffon flutter vest besides wearing it with a tee or chambray shirt as shown by the model. I would also like some ideas for the silk sequin scoopneck tee. I have one in the almond color.
    Thx.

  2. CMG, I wore the silk sequin scoopneck in almond w/a darker charcoal Factory blazer, jeans and nude patent shoes. No jewelry except for an F21 cocktail ring because the tee makes me sparkle like Edward from Twilight. *lol*

  3. Any ideas for the pencil skirt in vintage wisteria?
    Thank you!

  4. This is a great idea for a post, thanks Alexis!

I have always had trouble w my "Frances-type" ruffly long-sleeve shirts. I own several and I love the ruffles, but they overwhelm me. Any thoughts on how to layer so the effect is a little more subtls?

  5. I actually have the same problem as Ruffles (well, my problem IS ruffles...) I want to wear these shirts now because next year I really think ruffles are going to look dated.

  6. newreader, I think that wisteria color would look fabulous with brown or navy. Grey would be very pretty as well.

  7. More from me, of course...pearl gray pencil skirt. I'm stumped. Somehow the heather carbon one seems easier to pair with things, maybe because I usually wear dark colors on my bottom half? Help!

  8. Elaine: I love the pearl gray color with yellows. I wore my similar-colored pencil skirt with the merino boyfriend shirt in honey and really liked how it turned out. You can see the outfit here. I also think purples, especially darker shades like eggplant, go really well with gray.

  9. The dream zip henley in heirloom pink. I would use the styling in JCA's header photo, but I 1) can't pull off taffeta shorts ;) and 2) have a darker complexion - dark caramel-ish. Think Halle Berry.

  10. Ruffles & Rebecca: I love my Frances long sleeve blouses. But I agree, by themselves, the ruffles are too much. So I try to wear layers, so the ruffles peek out.

I wore the gray striped long-sleeve Frances button down with a navy blue blazer and it looked great.

I also wore the white Frances with a black v-neck cardigan and it looked nice too.

    Hope this helps! :)

  11. CMG, for the chiffon flutter vest, I would wear it on top of a simple blazer or jacket.

And for the Sequin scoopneck tee, check out Alicia's styling http://www.cheetahisthenewblack.com/2010/09/weekend-to-do-list.html.

I love how she wore the pearls with it.

  12. What about the tartan shirt? Is the general consensus that it is holiday only? Is anyone "de-holidaying" it?

  13. Hi Ladies,

I got the light blue gingham blazer and have no idea how to wear it, once summer/spring comes around. any ideas? I don't do shorts much and thats how its shown in the catalog. It was one of those "its on sale!" purchases..:-/

  14. Kris: I recently wore my Tartan shirt tucked into my black Minnie pants with riding boots. I will admit that I wore it during the "12 Days of Christmas" time period (on the 30th), but I don't feel it was all that Christmas-y.

I would appreciate any creative styling for:
    1. Harlow blouse in the guava color (from '08)
    2. Dream sweater tank dress in heather gray (also from '08, I believe)

    Great idea for this post!

  15. Thanks, Joanie. I think I'm keeping it on the rotation, for January at least. Maybe like you suggest, with a black puffer.

  16. Joanie - I too have the dream sweater tank dress in heather gray from '08. A great piece! I usually wear my with a blue striped button down shirt that has a ruffle color (from the Gap), a skinny patent tortoise belt (from JCrew) at the waist, with dark brown riding boots, toped off with my purple velvet Eden blazer (from JCrew). The blue and the purple complement each other, but also provide some color and interest to the gray dress. My other must is wearing a belt at the waist to give some definition.

Just my ideas . . .hope that helps!

  17. Mangomo: the blue gingham blazer would look awesome with jeans! You could wear with a white tank or t-shirt and skinny jeans (or boot cut) and then finish off with some red heels . . for a pop of color! Or you could keep the shoes neutral and add a red, orange, or yellow shirt underneath.

Also, if you are brave enough, you could put a floral shirt underneath too. Stripes and gingham can be worn as if they were solids with florals. You just need to make sure the florals are in the same color family.

Hope that helps! (Great blazer by the way. . .I wanted that one, but missed it on sale.)

  19. Joanie, I wrote a post last year (around this time of the year or maybe February) on the sweet guava Harlow blouse. If you open my blog and look through the labels you should be able to find it (can't provide the link as I am on my phone). It was more about what cardigan color pair with it than general styling and the general consensus was that it looks best with a mustard-y (or this year Gold) color and caramel-brown. HTH!

Kris I have worn recently the tartan boy shirt under the navy cashmere henley and with navy cords and it looked great and not like holiday attire. The only thing is my husband said that I looked like a schoolgirl, but at 40+ I take it as a compliment (I think he meant preppy).

  20. Elaine, I wear my pearl gray pencil skirt with ivory - seems kind of plain, but I love it. I also love how they styled it in January's catalog with a chambray shirt and white tee. I plan to try this combo as soon as it warms up a little bit as my classroom is freezing when it's the least little bit cold outside.

  21. Mangomo, this may sound odd, but it actually worked on her:

One of the SAs at the local B&M wore her spots and sparkle cami under the blue gingham blazer. NEVER EVER would have thought to put them together and yet she still pulled off the different patterns. Maybe it's the brown buttons on the blazer that tie in to the brown in the cami.

  22. Thanks Alexis! I have the gray striped Frances, too .... I'm going to ty it with the navy blazer, untucked and sleeves rolled, to make it a bit more casual!

  23. Ema: thank you SO much! I am now on the hunt for a mustard/honey/gold cashmere cardigan pop-back in my size from the Crew ... I love that look!

  24. Joanie, I love guava with light blue and turquoise. I wear my guava Maya sweater with the bright blue double-serge wool pencil skirt and the combination goes together very well. I have a print guava blouse that I always pair under a turquoise cardi, with bronzed ochre skirt or trousers.

  25. Elaine, I love the pear gray pencil since it goes with so many things in my wardrobe, which is mostly cool tones. I like it especially with pastel pink, purple and coral colors. I also like it with a white blouse or v-neck tee with a statement necklace.

  26. Joanie, Lucky magazine's January issue on page 48 suggested pairing pale pink (like the guava) with poppy orange. They show outfits in this combination, and it looks really fresh! You might try the Harlow blouse w/any orangey or coral skirt.

I tried it the color combo using my guava Maya cardi, (light grey tank beneath) & a Club Monaco orangy/coral skirt and it looks great.

  27. Oh, and guava looks good w/olive shades (think Trouper pant in titanium and skinny belt in bright lavender), all shades of grey including pearl grey and charcoal and of course, denim.

  28. If I remember correctly, JC showed a guava sweater with last year's violet (can't remember JC's name) perfect pencil. I bought the pencil and wanted a guava sweater to wear with it, but never did get one. I loved that color combo. I still need a guava sweater. sigh

  29. I think the skirt color had plum in the name and it was more plum than violet. :)

  30. Thanks Ema - just got the navy toothpick cords on sale, I'll try that!
