JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

Preface: A big "thanks!" to Elaine (in this post) & Himmiefan (in this post) who both suggested a weekly "Help Style Me!" post about getting outfit advice from the JCA community. I think it is a fantastic idea. Hopefully this will help out our fellow JCAs with those hard-to-work-with J.Crew items! :)

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I have a Fiona jacket in navy blue canvas. It's super cute with skinny jeans and heels. I'd love to dress it up with a sequin-embellished tank or something sparkly for evening. Any suggestions?

  2. Looking for a XS in the merino satin-waist pant. It would go great with a vest that I have. Please let me know if you come across one! Thanks!

  3. Hello Ladies! I'm looking for some help on styling the Ecole jacket from 2008 in the Mediterranean Blue color, as well as the Favorite cords in the Golden Yellow color. Thank you!

  4. Momoberry -- I just made a few sets for you with the Ecole. I don't reach for mine that often, so it helped me out too. I think I'll wear it tomorrow! :)

  5. OK, now that I have the fabulous boutonniere blazer (dark gray with black trim) what do I wear with it aside from something black on the bottom? I'm sure there are more interesting possibilities, I'm just awful at thinking of them.

Also challenged by the navy dot flouncette blouse. I must have put it on and taken it off 15 times and I've yet to wear it out of the house. When I bought it, my idea was to recreate the catalog outfit with the orchid Traversa cardi over it, but that didn't work out.

I saw a blog pic of someone yesterday wearing it under a turtleneck, with just the edges peeking out. I liked that for its unexpectedness but kept thinking, well, wouldn't it be all lumpy ...?

One more -- my electric blue double serge pencil skirt. It sits there week after week unworn. C'mon y'all, I know you can help me do better than a black turtleneck!@

  6. Elaine: I have the Navy dot flouncette blouse and got it in a size way too big for me (a size 6, when I am a size 0). It was a great price (less than $30) at the store and I couldn't pass it up. I knew exactly how I would wear it too. I wear it under my Navy Blue Perfect Fit V-Neck Cardigan. Predictable & boring combination, but cute. The cardigan is form-fitting so it's flattering for me. The cotton knit also hides any lumps from the blouse underneath. But since the blouse is so light and sheer, it doesn't lump up too much at all. The blouse and its great print peaks out in just the right places (on the top, below, and on the sleeves). Hope this helps a bit. :)

  7. Elaine I think the bright blue looks good with something like the bright dahlia color, or the spicy olive color. I know that is alot of brightness but it works! Also, I have worn my spectator mary jane heels in the butterscotch color with the skirt, so tops/cardis in that color would also look great. I have the nordic blue but it is basically the same color as the bright blue but toned down, IMO. Honey glaze also looks good with it!

  8. Elaine, I love my bright blue double-serge pencil and wear it often. My favorite pairing is with gray tights/shoes and the gray cotton-cashmere corsage cardi from a couple of years back. The cardi is styled much like a Jackie cardigan with a group of gray cotton flowers sewn on the left side. I also wear it with the longer cotton-cashmere grandpa cardi in gray or taupe and a pale coral or white tee underneath. The navy 3/4 sleeve Kelly sweater jacket also looks good with the skirt and I usually pair that with a tissue turtleneck in royal blue so just the blue neck and the forearms stick out.

Another way I wear it is with my two Maya cardis in the nude and papaya colors with a white tee or cami underneath. I also wear it similarly with the perfect-fit cardi in papaya. I love orange with blue and I thank Gigiofca for that color-pairing tip, I use it a lot.

The blue skirt also goes nicely with the terra and island paisley shirts. I've also paired it with the rose vines perfect shirt and a navy pinstripe blouse from another retailer. Why don't you try it with navy tights and the navy dot flouncette blouse?

It's such a pretty skirt I hope you'll find a way to wear it.

  9. Thanks all for the ideas! Will try some brights and some neutrals with my blue double-serge and see what happens with that and the flouncette! :)

  10. Elaine, re the dot blouse, I have worn mine with trouser jeans and a bring pink cardigan (I love navy and bright pink or bright green). I also plan to wear it with the ochre double serge pencil skirt. Since the dots are off-white when the weather gets a little warmer I'm planning on wearing it with a long cream belted cardigan and jeans. I've been suprised that I want to dress it down more than dress up!

  11. I'd be appreciate of suggestions of what colors to wear with the moss tweed pencil skirt, or if anyone would share outfits they've worn with it. Thanks!

  12. Elaine: my PS had the navy dot flouncette blouse on yesterday with a tan/khaki blazer over it, paired with jeans in a medium wash and flats. It looked super cute!

  13. Oh how I wish I had bought the dot flouncette blouse... I saw it on a blogger with her poppy lady day coat and it was super cute.

Barbabelle: I wore my moss tweed pencil skirt with a very pale minty green color turtle neck sweater from BR years ago. It is very similar to the Alexie sweater that was worn with the moss tweed mini skirt in the catalog few months ago. I also wore my velvet Bella in Riviera (?) blue and it went really well with the teal color that picks up from the tweed. HTH!

  14. Did anyone get the floating sequins cami? I just received it yesterday. Bought on final sale before I tried it on. I know-I should know better. It doesn't fit well. It's cut very straight up and down. On me it's baggy on the smallest part of my waist and in the stomach area and then tight at my hips. I'm thinking of getting it altered so it fits better.

Has anyone else got this cami and what do you wear it with. Did you have any problems with the fit?

  15. Barbabelle: I've worn my Moss Tweed skirt with the Arrow sweater in moss green and liked it. I have a tissue t-neck in a deep forest green color (spruce pine, maybe?) from a couple seasons ago and it looks beautiful with that as well. I haven't worn this outfit yet, but it also looks beautiful with anything in the nightfall blue color. This skirt has so many beautiful colors in it...the options are endless!

  16. Boston Brit-thanks for the idea! Hadn't thought to wear the dot floucette with pink for some reason

Elaine, I've worn it with the heather nut Bella. I also think it would great with the kakhii Adelaide jacket from 07. I had the brownish/beige jeweled cardigan from Loft that Im going to pair with it. I'll post some links to others' polyvores for more inspiration in a bit

Alexis this post is so fun! I love it! :)

  17. Barbabelle - I wore my moss tweed with the chalet turtleneck in rich plum the other day, and I really liked it. Wore heather gray tights and belted the sweater with a black belt. So if you have any plummy purples, you might try that - not an exact match but nicely complimentary.

You guys are making me sad I didn't get the dot flouncette. :)

  18. Hi ladies,

All this talk about the Dot Flouncette blouse has me thinking about my Bayberry Flouncette. Any ideas for that one? So far I have only paired it with last year's Perfect Pencil skirt in Fresh Plum.

  19. Ok Elaine, here you go!

I personally am going to wear this with the Gap camel city flats

My Loft cardi I mentioned above is a similar color

    Simple with nude heels

Cannot WAIT for a warmer day to wear it with the piped-and-twisted!
AND, one more, I think it would be a good transition look with the leaf green velvet Bella.
    HTH :)

  20. Sorry, totally hogging this thread, but one more idea, Elaine, is to go over to Polyvore and search for "dot flouncette." Choose "sets" from the drop down search menu :)

  22. I have the J Crew sequin pencil skirt in brown sheen (but really looks more maroon in person) that's currently on sale for $79. I love how it looks on the hanger, but when I put it on it bags at my waist a little and I feel like it makes me stomach look pouchy. Because of this I've only worn it once with a black velvet J Crew blazer from last year buttoned so it covers the waistband. I felt like the overall outfit was kind of boring and I'm hoping some of you have ideas of other things I can pair it with.

  23. I would appreciate any help you can give me with the marled thandie blazer from fall. Can't seem to figure it out. TIA!!

  24. Thank you very much for the ideas :-)

  25. wbrigitte, I have been wearing my marled thandie a lot. It's perfect for "winter" down here in Florida. One of my favorite outfits is the blazer, the sequin-stripe henley tank from the summer/fall and skinny jeans and heels. The dark gray looks really great with a hint of sparkle under it. There are several polyvores for it as well. I got mine when it was on super sale and I'm so glad I did. I get compliments every time I wear it!

  26. Hello,
Has anyone seen or tried on the Ripple Stripe pencil skirt? It looks like an orange pencil skirt online. I own a couple of JCREW skirts, but have never tried their pencil version. Is it flattering? Also, I ordered the cotton transversa-stripe tank in xxs and was sent the wrong tee and now it's sold out online. If anyone has come across it I would greatly appreciate the info. It's a navy and white stripe tank with angled stripes on one side. It's on sale.

    Thank you!!

  27. Catrina that is a great idea! I had emailed my online PS for ideas, and I was not impressed with what she came up with. But I Have a sequin tank in the "shadow" color and that might be just the thing with my toothpick jeans. Thanks for yur help!!

  28. Someone yesterday was asking about the Capella coat...it's gorgeous! So chic and classic! I waver between a 6 and an 8 in coats and jackets; bought the 8 in Prince of Wales plaid and love that it fits easily over a thick sweater or suit jacket. I bought it in the store for 30 percent off the sale price, and paid around $55 for it -- what a deal! Still waiting for my black Minnies ordered over the weekend...
