Celebrity Campaign Reveals: Katie Holmes for Ann TaylorKatie Holmes also released a statement where she says:
By Leah Chernikoff
January 12, 2011
Ann Taylor continues their revamp efforts (ok, sometimes we’ve called it their J.Crew-ification) with today’s announcement that Katie Holmes will be the new face of the workwear brand, WWD is reporting. The campaign will break in March magazines.
Holmes is a good fit to replace Heidi Klum: she’s a 32-year-old working mom whose style has settled into a place that’s clean and elegant but not too edgy or over-the-top and therefore accessible. Oh and also she’s gorgeous.
To that end she told WWD, “I’m glad that there is a store like Ann Taylor that can offer amazing styles for the many different roles that women play.” ...
I’ve been a fan of Ann Taylor since I was a young girl. I grew up loving the clothes ... and am really excited to be the face of Ann Taylor for the Spring season. I am thrilled to be part of a brand I believe in.This begs to ask, "What about J.Crew, Katie?!?" Just kidding. Of course she can have multiple retail loves! She looks amazing in that suit too.
However, I do find Ann Taylor's choice to be an interesting move. I mean, Katie Holmes was just seen modeling and advertising for their direct rival (J.Crew,) just a few months ago. Is it just a coincidence? (I honestly don't know.)
What are your thoughts on Katie Holmes advertising for Ann Taylor? Do you think this is a good move for Ann Taylor?
I think she is so stunning. She can look super cute girl next door, or drop dead elegant/glamorous.
ReplyDeleteI betcha it isn't a coincidence that AT scooped her up. I thought Naomi Watts was the AT celeb model? She was great too.
She looks beautiful, but also so sad! Or stony, or something. Every time I see that photo I get a bit depressed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with gumdrops - she'll be a great fit, but it is highly suspect that AT scooped her right up after JC.
ReplyDeleteKatie looks fantastic in that skinny AT suit but I couldn't help laughing after roxy's comment: she's a badass, but there's still a soft side because there are flowers - but she's a mean business woman - but oh look, soft romantic curly hair ...
Overall the shift in style for this year seems to be going in the direction of more polished and sophisticated (or so the fashion mags tell me), which I hate to say, but Ann Taylor does much better than J Crew right now. All the deconstruction and borrowed from the boys seems to be slowly on its way out.
ReplyDeleteI keep reading comments here lately about borrowing from the boys being "out". Clothing started as a unisex endeavor and the borrowing has been going on ever since. For a while in recent history women in the west didn't wear pants so add a blazer and to me Katie's suit is very borrowed from the boys. The concept may not fit or appeal to you and the "phrase" is certainly overused but the look can be classic and attractive... just my $.02
ReplyDeleteKatie is quite tall. Perhaps she got tired of wearing all the JC mini skirts (just like us). J/K
ReplyDeleteI think she looks great in that photo... a grown-up image, for sure.
This doesn't surprise me at all - didn't J.Crew supply the clothes for "The Romantics" movie she was in? Her schlepping for J.Crew (including being in the catalog) was probably part of the bargain. I never took that as any indication that she had a particular affinity for the brand.
ReplyDeletePlus for celebrities is a lot of money to be made in brand endorsements. I'm sure she's taking home a nice chunk of change for her "work".
does a "celebrity" as a face for a store really make a difference to the regular shopper? or just to the marketing people who think so?
ReplyDeleteshe looks great in those outfits! this would definitely make me shop on over to AT.
ReplyDeleteKaty's adorable, and also a very good businesswoman (or gets good advice).
ReplyDeleteOT, it just occurred to me that the end of the "go-shop" period is January 15th. Apparently, even if one of the non-MD candidates comes up with a higher offer, if JC accepts it, the corporation (JC) will have to pay a $27 million fee to TPG for putting the original deal together.
So I guess if critter pants come back, the critters will be little dollar signs.
WFF: that's too funny re: $$ critter pants. ;-)
ReplyDeleteKatie looks amazing but I guess if she's gone to AT it sends a message to me that she's trying to look more mature for her age. Interesting to see what AT will offer for this new year with her.
WFF, I would buy critter pants with $'s on them. I would pay double for critter pants with the ¢'s on them because that's how much is left in my bank account if jcrew decides to bring back the cute ¢hit.
ReplyDeleteisabella, excellent question! I guess now that Katie Holmes is advertising a brand she never wears, I'll run right out to my AT store. Not.
ReplyDeleteI wish retailers and manufacturers would understand that the best advertising is clothing made to flatter and enhance the body, good tailoring, quality fabrics, consistent sizing standard, reasonable prices. I would take the money given to a star and invest in any of the above.
Funny that Ad Age reported today that most celebrity endorsements are a huge waste of money...

ICK! Ann Taylor can have her! She has turned into a total freak since she hooked up with Tom Cruise. And now they are "threatening" to not show up at the Oscars because they are mad at Ann Hathaway for doing a spoof of Katie on SNL. PLEASE! Get a sense of humor! She is wasting her 20s...You know what would be great? If J.Crew got Ann Hathaway to model now!
ReplyDeleteUsing someone famous as the face for an ad is to revive the brand. It worked for The Gap by using Lauren Hutton in the 90s. I am willing to bet that some of Katie's fans will go out and check out AT.
ReplyDeleteLOVED! that Romantics photoshoot, it was amazingly beautiful. I wish that J. Crew would do more shoots like that, it was fun and refreshing method of advertisting. And it made me aware of that Romantics movie which I totally want to check out now....all because of J. Crew. Katie Holmes looks fab in the pic you posted! Thanks for sharing!

I love Katie Holmes. Have since her Dawson's Creek days :) I think she is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOT: Just have to vent here...ordered the sold out Timber Tweed pencil skirt via WWFIFY on Dec. 29. It finally got here today and the store sent me the wrong size!!! Since it took so long to get here, I'm sure my actual size is now officially sold out everywhere :( I am so so sad.
I was hoping that she would do a line from her Holms & Yang childrens for Crewcuts, like Lemlem line. She had great dresses for little girls...I thought she was perfect for crewcuts line. Sad...sad...
ReplyDeleteI think Katie Holmes is very pretty...too bad she's not going to be a face of JCrew. BTW, the Romantics - saw it on a plane, meh. I do love the catalog shoot promoting it.
ReplyDeleteShe is gorgeous, loved the Romantics shoot, but it's rare for a paid celebrity endorsement of a retailer to really have much of a marketing impact. AT can have her. Lauren Hutton (paid, yes, but way more cred than KH) and Michelle Obama say much bigger things about the J. Crew brand, IMO.
ReplyDeleteAppGal, I'll keep my fingers crossed that they can find your correct size - I know you've been waiting for that skirt to arrive.
ReplyDeleteAppGal, I was able to find a Timber Tweed skirt just 2 days ago. So if you can diligently stalk the website you may get lucky too. :)
