J.Crew Email: Key piece: the matinee trench

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Ketan, who shared the following email J.Crew sent this morning.

The email features the Matinee Trench (Item 36326; $158.00), described as
Getting top billing in our closets this season: our impeccably chic spring topper crafted in polished cotton twill. It's loaded with iconic trench touches (from a waist belt to a buckled back vent and an oversize hood), and we added matte gold hardware for a bit of glamour-girl gleam. Regular fit. Zip closure. Long sleeves. Fully lined. Hits below hip. Import. Dry clean.
The positives: I love that this coat is a trench style (so pretty!) with a hood (must protect the hair!) The question: is the coat water resistant? If not, that sucks. The negative: I don't care for it being dry clean only. I also like the Iconic Trench coat's style more (which incidentally repels water and machine washable). Now there is a coat that will last for a lifetime! :)

What are your thoughts on the Matinee Trench? Have you tried on or own it? If so, please share.

  1. I am really interested in the matinee trench, in navy. I don't mind that it would need to be dry cleaned.

I have the Icon Trench in the british khaki color and I love it. Personally, I would not machine wash my Icon Trench. There is no way I'd be able to restore the pleating on it or have the patience to iron it, which it would invariably require.

Unfortunately, I am concerned about sizing on the matinee trench. I online-chatted with a CS rep and requested garment measumrents (sleeve length in particular b/c I am tall). My Icon Trench fits perfectly in my regular J. Crew dress size. The CS rep informed me that the matinee trench is TWO INCHES shorter in the sleeve than the icon trench. I just don't believe that. I took a measuring tape to my icon trench and the number she gave me for my icon trench sleeve length wasn't even accurate, so I don't know what to believe!

Any input from someone who has tried the matinee trench would be helpful!

  2. I love the hoodie and have had several daydream fantasies about wearing the matinee trench. However, I think the Icon is the timeless piece. If this is not water repellent than I would have to pass as well. I can see this piece being adorable for casual looks and great for travel.

  3. I wore my short icon trench yesterday since it was raining. I love the fact that it is classy and water repellent though I have my JC umbrella with me.
I'd be interested in the navy color of the matinee trench since I'm on the market for a darker longer length trench.
My icon trench sleeve length fits me perfectly and if it really is shorter in the sleeves it will be a pass for me. I really do hope the CS reps get their sizing info straight!

  5. I would also like to know the correct sleeve length on this trench since I am tall as well. The sleeves on the model look short on her so I'm afraid that they will be on me too. :/

  6. Jenni, I think I am going to order it so I will certainly report back!

I can never tell whether sleeves are going to be the same on me as they look on the model. The sleeves on the icon trench don't look long enough on the model but they are perfect on me. One of the reasons I keep coming back to J. Crew over and over is that the clothes are usually well-proportioned for my tall figure.

  8. This trench looks fairly casual compared the the Icon and I suppose that is part of its charm. I bought and am loving the Rainy Day Utility Jacket and I have both the short and long Icons so I will pass on this one.

  9. I agree it looks more casual but gosh I'm loving the navy and I'm a sucker for the hood!

  10. This is the type of item that, were it hanging in a store other than J.Crew, I would not look at twice. It is just boring looking and not something I'd be interested in if it didn't have the J.Crew label on it...

  11. I spoke with a personal shopper online today and she said the coat is not water resistant. Doesn't really make a lot of sense to me to buy a trench coat that I can't wear in the rain. Unfortunate because it is adorable.

  12. I purchased the matinee trench in a 2 petite since I am 5'3'' and normally wear a 0 or 2 in regular jcrew dresses. The sleeves and length are perfect (longer than on the model). It actually is a bit large but I'll keep it in case I wear a bulky sweater under it. It looks like it will be water repellent. The colour and fabric are gorgeous.
