JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

Preface: A big "thanks!" to Elaine (in this post) & Himmiefan (in this post) who both suggested a weekly "Help Style Me!" post about getting outfit advice from the JCA community. I think it is a fantastic idea. Hopefully this will help out our fellow JCAs with those hard-to-work-with J.Crew items! :)

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. New arrivals are up. Taking a quick look before I head in to the office. Will check back later tonight to see what everyone has to say.

  2. Two weeks ago I requested styling help for the Harlow blouse in sweet guava. Once again, thank you to everyone for your suggestions! I picked up a Jackie in burnt cinnamon and I love the color combination. I plan on trying it with the other suggested shades as well, such as olive and turquoise. :)

  3. Any input on how to wear the Haya sequin sweatshirt for everyday, other than pairing it with black pants/skirt or jeans? I have the marled charcoal one. I don't want this item to become another piece of 'closet art' that never sees the outside world!

  4. @Elaine
you could try it with a blazer, or the schoolboy chambray shirt layered underneath, maybe with a belt over it.

I have the sequinned tee, 3/4 sleeves and its sequinned all over and I think i'm not going to pull it out until next holiday season because I just can't imagine wearing it on a regular day :-/ but the sweatshirt shouldn't be too hard to pull off because it's sleeves are atleast not sparkled up.

  5. @Elaine--I like marled charcoal with olive/fatigue colors--also a way to play down the sparkle factor.

OT but xoxo said above that she saw new arrivals up on the site--does anyone else see them?

  6. Hello Ladies! I'm looking for some tips on how to style the Golden Yellow Favorite Fit cords. I think some color combinations would help here, since the Golden Yellow color is pretty bright.

Also, OT, I've lost weight and now my Minnie Pants are a bit baggy. Has this happened to anyone, and if so, how are you now wearing the Minnie Pants. I guess I need some styling ideas for slim baggy pants now, lol!

  8. Momo, I love bright yellow with a navy top and a brightly-colored necklace! One of the outfits I pinched from a J Crew shot is a yellow skirt with a navy cotton sateen button-down and a string of turquoise beads. Every time I wear that combinations, people compliment me. HTHs!

  9. This post is pretty much entirely OT. :)

I don't see any new arrivals either. Bummed. Was looking forward to seeing some of the skirts they had styled with the newer spring tops. Oh well. Won't be buying anything springy for a couple months anyway. :)

Also, I just happened to notice that Alexis's profile recently went from "a woman in her late 20s" to "a woman in her early 30s." I'm guessing this means she recently had a birthday and a fairly big one at that! :) So, happy belated birthday Alexis!! Thanks again for everything you do here! Hope you enjoy your 30s as much as I have so far!

  10. ajr: great eye.

Alexis, happy belated birthday! We must be similar in age. ;-)
Thanks for all you do here at JCA.

  11. xoxo, do you know something we don't ;) I don't see new arrivals either

  12. i didnt see anything new either? Saw new arrivals in store last night though- there are some really cute oxford ballet flats that fit TTS (that is TTS for my normal ballet flat size).

nothing really excited me. Maybe that is because it is too cold here to even think about shorts? I still like the lace dobby skirt though and the jean shorts but it seems like those can wait?

  13. I couldn't see any new arrivals, either. Bummer, I was really hoping for that chino pencil skirt from the spring lookbook.

Momoberry -- I agree with Elaine about wearing navy with your yellow cords. I have the 08 version of the ochre pencil skirt which is a fairly intense, saturated yellow, and love it paired with the Selvedge Chambray shirt and a distressed brown belt.

Gray, yellow and white is also one of my favorite colour combinations, so maybe a simple white T and a gray cardi?

    HTH!

  14. I need help with ideas to wear with the golden bubbles pencil skirt. I love it, but am clueless on this one. Thanks in advance.

  15. Happy birthday Alexis!

Elaine, I have the sequin sweatshirt in light gray. I wore it yesterday with a gray striped jersey scarf, a light plum pencil skirt and black boots.

  17. Thank you for the suggestions! I'm planning on wearing the cords tomorrow evening and the tips have definitely helped me plan something special. Thanks!

  18. Momoberry, I posted one outfit in the Polyvore group, if interested. I think some grey hues would also work with the yellow. I wasn't sure how bright the yellow was though, so used a generic pant I found there.

  19. Amy, I wore an olive cami with a navy cardigan with navy tights and brown boots (at my ps's suggestion and really liked it).The website posed it with a darker gray cardi (they like grey with everything, don't they?).

  20. Any suggestions on a top to match the poppy waterfloral bubble skirt? I don't like the light grey pairing but not sure what kind of top to put it with...thanks!

  21. @Math Teacher:
Thanks so much! I will try to the navy. I do love grey, it just doesn't love me back...

  22. Kerri B., I put a set on Polyvore with that skirt. How about a chambray shirt?

  23. Happy Birthday Alexis!! Welcome to the thirties! They're so much better than your twenties! ;)

  24. I got home really late last night and read everyone's comments that they did not see the new arrivals online. I checked the site again and they were gone. I definitely saw the new arrivals splash page and new items but I had to scroll through really quick as I had a very busy day scheduled. Should have opened the product pages and left them up on my screen when I went to work. I can't explain it, maybe someone was "testing in production" and I stumbled across the page but there were definitely new arrivals. As I type this I am thinking that no one is going to believe me but darn it, I know what I saw!

  25. Amy me too!

I love it and plan to wear it to a fancy dinner in early Feb but have no idea what to wear it with and really don't want to buy anything new - since the skirt itself was an indulgence (I didn't need it). Wish I had something sparkly to pair it with... and love the navy suggestion but while navy tights are a yes I don't have a navy top that I think would work.

What do others think - would a light pink work?

  26. AJR, jcrewphd, jcrewlove, IRL, Kris, Tippy, Rose: LOL! You caught that change!!! I was hoping I could slip it in. ;) It's true, I am officially in my thirties now. Thank you all for the well-wishes. :)

  28. Happy birthday Alexis, you shoukd have told us. I just want to mention that I saw a SA wearing the tartan boy shirt with the black velvet Ruby jacket and a black skirt and it was a fantastic outfit. She was tiny and she was wearing a 00. Now I am reconsidering the Ruby!!!

  29. Also, I recently bought the Heidi dress in black and even if am not concerned by its appropriateness for work it is true that it is very low cut. I would like to know if the ladies who own this dress have taken it to the tailor and succesfully reduced the v-neck or what else (I know that someone mentionned wearing it with a scarf but I plan on wearing it for evening events so I don't think that would work. Plus I don't want to buy a scarf only to wear with this dress as I don't have any that would work). TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ema, I have the Heidi dress in the grey with the contrasting glen plaid skirt. I am busty so there is not enough fabric to pull the v-neck in and reduce it and I think it might ruin the drape of the dress. Do you have a brooch that you could use to pin the front together and try it out?

I do wear mine with a scarf because I love scarves and have a multitude of them but if that doesn't work for you perhaps a cami would do the trick. A fancy lace or silk cami would look pretty peeking out and should be fine for evening.

  31. jcbellemarie, GigiOfCa, & Ema: Thank you! You are all so sweet. :)

  32. Happy Belated, Alexis- You are SO YOUNG!

    Love this post....

  33. So the rumours were true....happy birthday, Alexis! And wecome to your 30s. They are even better than the 20s :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Crew Cricket & MommyDearest: Thank you so much too! I definitely feel younger than I am. ;) I am also looking forward to what the 30's have to bring. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. xoxo, thanks for the suggestions. I don't think there is enough fabric to pull the v-neck even on my not-busty figure so I will try the lace cami. Maybe I could try one of the scrves that I have after all (but because mine is black I think it is more difficult).
