Do You Own More Than One? ;)

Irene came up with a wonderful suggestion (in this post) for a post topic: "what do you love so much that you own more than one of?" There are lots of reasons why many of us buy more than one of the same J.Crew item: great price, great style, great fit, great colors, and the like. :)

To be honest, I am completely guilty of buying certain J.Crew items in multiples, especially when I can get a great price for it! I have been known to buy certain J.Crew flats (same style, just different colors and patterns) often, like the silk ballet flats. Over the summer, I purchased the Piper Tank (Item 94163) when it went on sale in white, navy, and pink. They look great under a cardigan during the nice early Fall weather in New England. Most recently, I purchased all four versions of the Chiffon rosette belt (Item 98098) for less than $4 each- and I love them all. The belts come in great colors and can be worn a variety of ways (click here for some ways).

What items do you love so much that you own more than one of? Why did you purchase multiples of those items? Would you recommend those items to other Aficionadas (and Aficionados)?

  1. Last winter I bought 3 J Crew flannel shirts, each a different color. They have 2 pockets that button and come in very handy to store a cell phone or some cashews for when you need a nibble.

  2. I have three jackie cardigans, four pairs of suede ballet flats, and numerous button down shirts from last year's fall rollout... just to name a few. :)

  3. Oooh-- I realize I own more multiples than I thought!

    1) Silky pleated tee - Highly recommended by FFM. Love this because, to be frank, it hides bloat and still creates a polished look.

    2) Grosgrain belt w/rhinestone buckle - I own 4. Love the simple pop of color.

    3) Tartine - I thought they were kind of thin, but I'm a ruffle nut so I got 2 at the sale price.

    4) Capri pants (89706) - The regular size (not petite) fit as an ankle pant on me. LOVE the fit. Comfortable, yet with the classic line of a trouser. I'll own 4 or 5 pair when I receive my order this week.

    5) Baird McNutt Georgia linen jacket (93765) - khaki tan, navy, yellow and bright flame. I get lots of compliments and it's so cute w/the Piper tank. The 3/4 sleeve is great for showing off bracelets and there is no collar to compete with a blouse you wear underneath.

    6) Enamel bracelets - lemon, orange, peacock and dark blue. One thin bangle looks REALLY good in between 2 of the rhinestone bangles.

    7) Boot cut cords - I have a pair of this year's matchsticks, but I got 5 of the boot cuts on sale last year and they are fabulous.

    8) I'll also own 2 of the Georgia dresses (96707) when I receive this week's order. I posted a blog entry about it in Grey Mist. Fantastic basic sheath, esp on sale.

Thanks again to Alexis! I don't have any friends IRL that shop at J Crew, so it's great to be here. :-)

  4. gigiofca,

what do you think of the baird mcnutt georgia linen jacket's fit?

let me know! the sale price is too good to pass up, but i'm deciding on the right size...?

  5. Ooooh, I am completely guilty of buying multiples of favorite items, just in different colors. Besides suiting (too boring to post about), here are my favorite multiples:

    * Harlow blouse (I have them in every color from this season, I love them so much)

    * chiffon-trim tissue tank (can be dressed up with layering or down if plain)

    * cashmere sweaters (boatnecks, turtlenecks, short sleeves, cardigans, you name it)

    * felt/wool pencil skirts (just beautiful)

    * ballet flats (you cannot have too many patterns!)

    * merino Alice sweater jackets from last year (LOVE them)

    * wool/cashmere plaza coats (I even have the ivory ones in reserve in the event I ruin my current one)

    * lady day coats (they come in such pretty bright colors!)

  7. I own several Jackie cardigans and driving mocs. :) They're some of my favorites.

  8. carmen @ 12:28am - I am size 4 or 6P, 34C and I feel that they fit TTS. It's supposed to fit close to the body. I don't recommmend sizing up. It's a structured jacket and you could have problems in the shoulders if you size up. I can fit an oxford shirt likt he Kelly underneath without a problem. The following measurements are taken flat on a size 4

    shoulder to shoulder - 14"
    shoulder to hem - 19.5"
    Underarm to underarm - 18"

  9. I have 4 featherweight cashmere cardigans. They cashmere is so delicate and soft. They are a nice layer over dressier tops. I also own half a dozen ballet flats, about a dozen tanks and perfect fit tees. I would love to buy some bootcut cords that everyone is talking about but am waiting for them to go on sale.

  10. Just to name a few multiples, I have:

    6 Jackie Cardis
    4 Cashmere Olivia Shells
    4 Ruffle Henleys
    4 Piper Tanks
    2 Cashmere Argyle Vests w/Bow
    2 Belle Skirts
    2 Watercolor Floral Rosette Tanks

  12. I spent too much money which my mother and my husband paid for me at J.Crew.

    In the past,I bought bunch of J.Crew headbands,about 15.

I bought 4 cashmere boat neck sweaters in pink, orange, blue and green, also 3 cashmere crew neck sweaters in purple, green and black.

    Two ballet flats.

five J.Crew coats,my favorites among them are two ( one in yellow, one in black)coats both belong to J Crew collection last year.

    Necklace ( too many already)

I can't spend as much as before at J.Crew right now, till I get a job myself in the future.

I love J.Crew, but I feel so guilty and not so happy after every time I placed a order at J.Crew.com since begin of this year, because my mother and my husband have to pay for me, although they are absolutely not rich.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I know this post will make me feel less guilty for purchasing multiples of an item! Some of my favorites:

    3 velvet bellas
    3 alice merino sweaters
    4 marcella blouses
    2 dream tie cardigans
    4 Tartine cardigans
    Several jackie cardigans
    2 ecole jackets
    3 piper tanks
    3 elizabeth halters
    3 lydia blouses

    OMG!

    ReplyDelete
  14. OMG! My husband thinks I'm strange for buying multiples of the same item (in very similar colors too). I've definitely been outdone by you ladies! :-) BTW can any of you comment on the bootcut cords? Is the short inseam really 31". I find that sometimes JC inseams are shorter than stated. Also, do they fit TTS?

  15. fantastic question. I'm curious to hear the answers:

I do own more than one of...

-Athens Linen Jacket (with subtle metallic good threading). 3/4 sleeve, popped tiny collar, rope to tie around the waist. I bought two of them on sale...and I'm thrilled that I did. I've worn it at least once a week for 3 seasons out of the year for the past 2 years.

-tuxedo wool mini (with bow and tuxedo-clothe-covered-buttons on the front). I own this in black and blue, both purchased from the final sale. They're cute, without being too cutesy, and look equally well with a "going out" top or a white button-down.

-Lexington Jacket (double-faced wool, enamel button). I own this in the grey and black (both with white trims). Really gorgeous, and really versatille.

-cashmere hoodie. Kinda thin, but I bought them heavily on sale (maybe $50 each?). They're a comfortable, cozy alternative to a sweatshirt.

-Italian Wool Pinstripe Suit. I own snagged one of the jacket, but have doubles of both the pants and skirt (snagged the second pair on sale). I had both tailored...and one set is slightly bigger than the other (for the I-had-too-much-pasta-last-night-days...or the I-need-to-work-off-holiday-weight weeks). I prefer my suiting pieces to be quite fitted, so I always look for stretch to the fabric, and try to find doubles of my favorite bottoms.

I wish I could own more than one of...

-Bella jacket. I have it in the midnight blue velvet. I would have picked up a twin of that, as well as the gray herringbone/wool version.

-Abbey Jacket. The shape doesn't work for everyone, but this was my favorite to teach in. The bracelet sleeves help me to avoid accidentally using it as an eraser, and the loose shape was a nice alternative to more fitted blazers.

-Patent Leather Mary Janes. I LOVE my current pair: sexy and class, and with the help of insolia's, I can walk in them all day. Unfortunately, Jcrew canceled my order for a second pair TWICE...and they seem to be completely sold out.

    ReplyDelete
  16. two more:

-Fleur d'ile (?) merino wool dress. (it's the brightly colored floral dress--also came in a zebra version last spring). The shape was sack-like straight from the store, but a quick trip to the tailor turned it into a gorgeous, skimming-but-not-skintight dress that goes easily from teaching to the evening.

I wish I could have picked up another...
-cashmere boatneck dress in grey. It was WAY too big, but again, tailoring brought out the potential in the dress. Sexy with brown boots and a wide, tight belt at the true waist.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 3 J. Crew beach dresses
    2 Lisa dresses
    2 Sanur dresses
    3 jersey tank dresses
7 or 8 bootcut cords in different colors
    7 or 8 cord trousers
    4 cafe capris
    4 enamel bangles
    5 summerweight bermudas
    5 or 6 Jackie cardigans
    3 slub tie tanks
    2 cashmere hoodies
    2 matte velvet academy blazers
    2 cambridge cable cardigans
And lots of linens, wool, silk/cashmere blend v-neck and crewneck sweaters, scarves, probably more things I'm forgetting

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is a fun post!

I think if something works for your body type, there's nothing wrong with getting two-- or three-- of the same flattering/fabulous cut rather than something else that may be mediocre.

So! That's my reason for owning:
-3 J. Crew suits- Not really the same style or color, but I like them best out of the suits in this price range: Theory, BR, etc.
-About 10-15 J. Crew button-ups: especially the Kellys, oxfords, slim stretch shirts. I also have 2 of the Liberty print fabric shirts from the same season (the blue flowered one and the green flowered one)... My mother says the print is dowdy, but I love them.
-Like... 8 merino V-neck/Egyptian cotton v-neck sweaters. They're all different colors except for the bright blue from a couple winters ago; I loooove this color and see it so rarely that I bought 2 "just in case".
-3 pairs of matchstick cords- gray, black, brown.
-Does anyone remember the big-bow flats from 2005? I have 3 of those: the herringbone; the navy; the tartan. I'm in a city that is rough on shoes; I don't wear them often. :(
-Cashmere: The quality has gone down in the recent years, I feel-- the cardigan I got in 2001 never pills but the hoodie from 2007 looks like some sort of boucle wool at parts. But I'll still get the cashmere when it's on (super) sale.
-What I gravitate towards in J. Crew and own many of, but not multiples of the same style: belts; scarves; coats; jackets.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 2 pairs of the city metallic ballet flats (platinum and gold), at least five jackie cardigans, 3 sarah camisoles (perfect for super hot, super humid days)4 pairs of capri sandals, 2 pairs of espadrilles from last year, 2 cambrdige cable turtlenecks. that's all I can think of right now. BGD

    ReplyDelete
  20. Audrey, I think you are right--stick with what works!

I have multiples in: Jackie cardigans, from this year and from prior seasons, an embarrassing number of them. Summerweight cashmere sweaters. Perfect fit tees. Numerous featherweight merino v-necks/cardigans and Egyptian cotton v-necks. Two velvet academy blazers and two corduroy blazers--one is an academy and one isn't, but both are great in the fall. I wish they'd bring the academy style back--I love those jackets, and was sad to see them go.

  22. I don't have too many duplicates, but I do have 2 of the tie front dress--papaya and navy. If the grey one was available, i'd snag that one too (esp. at the amazing price right now!) It is such a wonderful dress for just throwing on...it drapes very nicely too.

I have a several of the slub tees...some solid colors and some with graphics.

Question for you ladies about the bootcut cords since many of you have mentioned them: do they fit more like the bootcut jeans or more like the favorite fit chinos? I've actually never tried on a pair. I have one pair of the trouser cords from last year.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have several Jackie Cardis. Perfect tees also, seem to multiply in my closet. Bootleg cords for the fall. All of these items are perfect for our weather here in Texas.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Not really related to this post, but couldn't find a good place to post this.
Does anyone else have cashmere argyle short sleeve tee in green/ grey? If you do, do those pink (red?) lines look lot darker than the ones in the picture?? In the picture they looked much more subtle, but in person, it seems too bright to me... Let me know what do you think about the color / fit and all! Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have lots and lots of perfect tees too by the way :) They make them in so many colors!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anony@8:07...I agree that sometimes people can go a bit overboard....but also let us try to ignore posts that "aren't us". :) I am one not to buy more than one or two of an item I like...I just think of an interview I read with Ashly Judd not too long ago...she was thinking of buying a $50 tee and she said to herself, "Do you know how many people that amount of money could fee in third world country." (or even America for that matter!) Unless I really need it I pass on multiples of more than 2 or 3....

    ReplyDelete
  27. I looove buying in duplicate when I find something that fits wonderfully!
    Here are my duplicates:
    3 jersey pleated tops
    2 tartine
    4 jackies
    2 dream tie cardigans
    2 chiffon rose belts
    2 ruffle henley tees
    2 belle skirts
    2 cashmere long-sleeve tees
    2 hammered silk tanks

    ReplyDelete
  28. 2 of the dream tie cardigans- in the light grey color and purple

3 of the ringspun tees with the little flowers on one side of the collar- in navy, white, and peacock

    ReplyDelete
  29. I purchase multiples of the same item frequently, and always have...it just makes more sense to buy more of an item you know you will wear, than to purchase several different pieces that will just hang in your closet. This being said...the multiples are usually not purchased all at once, but over a period of time after realizing that they are a *must have* staple to my wardrobe, and always purchased at sale prices. My list is:

    5 Silky Jersey Pleated Tops
    5 Jackie Cardigans (so far)
    6 Suzannah Camis
3 Pair Cotton Matting Wide Leg Pants
    3 Pair Cropped Chinos
    5 No Hassle Headscarves
    7 Skinny Belts
More Favorite Fit Tanks than I could possibly count...I even wear them as PJ's, and the sale prices can't be beat. :)

I also buy in multiples for my DH and boys...once again, always when I find them at fabulous sale prices...it actually saves our family a TON of money in the long run. :)

  30. K,

I have that grey/green argyle sweater and like it a lot. The pink pattern is the azalea color, and I don't think it's too much. I like it because it makes the sweater more fun and colorful than most argyles. It isn't a really dark, thick line, but a thin sewn in line. The fit is true to size

    ReplyDelete
  31. k:
I think pink lines of Cashmere arglye short sleeve sweater in green/gray is very very subtle, so it won't probably other you so much. It is true to size, but I can layer it over a long sleeve T-shirt or a white shirt. It goes well with jeans and skirts. You can also wear it with your pants suit for office. I bought at sales price but it is just adorable! HTH!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sorry for my typo: "it won't probably bother you so much". Good luck on your decision!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks argyle and naomi :)
I got it when jcrew had additional 40% off sale for 36 dollars! And when I got it in the mail, I guess I was used to the pictures on the website and was thinking the pink line would be much more subtle. Good to know that you are liking it and that it fits to TTS. I put it on for the first time today, and wasn't sure whether it's slightly too long or not. Thanks for the outfit suggestions too naomi!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh boy, most of what I wear is J.Crew. I especially recommend the merino wool n necks, I have three of them.
The favorite washed shirts, last count I was up to 17; but they are perfect and so this number isn't so bad.
Chinos, the new fits are very good. Ties, I like the narrowed width and the fact that on one else I work with has them.
Shetland wool sweaters, two of these already this year, up to three now. Greta weight, not too heavy, more like the weight of the merino wool ones.
Seven pairs of their shoes, again fit me well and I like the rubber sole, no need for the old man shoe rubbers then, or worse yet, boots.
Five belts, some are excellent, some ok. The new plaque belt is okay.

Guess this makes me a J.Crew junkie, or just a guy with an on line shopping problem.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anon @ 9:04: Thanks for your "mitigating" comment! :)

I would have to second FFM's comment that these duplicates I have-- and I imagine, for most people-- were not bought at the same time and, most likely, for full price, but with the realization of what you need after you constantly reach for the same thing and/or with the help of informative blogs like this one, which I began to turn to after retailmenot took down their J. Crew coupons. I also read it for fun and help, but not because I want to judge people on no-end arguments about want vs. need, product lifecycles, individual lifestyles, and developed vs. developing world economies.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I see a lot of people have multiples (I feel a little better now). But it's not a surprise.

One of the reasons I shop at a catalog company like J.Crew is the ability to get multiples. I like to wear simple, interchangeable separates, and since J.Crew typically has multiple colors it makes perfect sense to order more than one if the item fits my figure and my lifestyle. Nordstrom, for example, rarely has more than one or two colors of most items at either B&M or online.

(I also like the ability to get the same color in more than one item . . . must fight 80s tendency to be too matchy-matchy.)

Cafe capris, cashmere Ts, wool suiting, ballet slippers, and tissue tees are examples for me.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Can't help it I'm a lawyer!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hmm, this is a good question. I have multiples of the Alice Merino (2), Cashmere T-neck (2), and Tissue T-necks (3?), and Tissue Crew necks - long and short sleeved (5).

If I have more than one of something, it was purchased on sale...actually, if it is anything from JC, it's purchased on sale :)!

    ReplyDelete
  39. audball...I hear ya :) I think the ONLY thing I've ever purchased at full price was the honey glaze cord skirt, and that was only because I'd gotten some gift money. It was worth it though...that color in my size is no longer for sale!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I pretty much only buy on sale at J Crew. I have 2 items that I've paid full price for and only b/c I LOVED them and they were flying out the store. That said, here are my multiples:

    8 favorite fit chinos
    3 cafe capris
    3 fitted tees
    3 cord pencil skirts
4 cord pants (some bootcut, some matchstick)

    ReplyDelete
  41. After reading other's posts, I realized that I have more multiples than I initially thought.

J.Crew bootleg jeans and cords fit me so well that I have accumulated several pairs over several seasons.

2 Elizabeth halters and 2 Lydia halters--for those with larger shoulders and arms, the cut is these sleeveless blouses is flattering and the work so well under casual and dressy clothes.

2 Double-Serge Wool Pencil Skirts--great tailored fit and classic colors have made these a staple for me!!

Cashmere T-Shirts (LL and SS)--another wardrobe staple accumulated over a couple of seasons, most on sale or promotion. Just can't just $150+, even if its cashmere in great colors and cuts.

    ReplyDelete
  42. math teacher (or anyone else): tell me about the bootcut cords...how do they fit? More like bootcut jeans or like chinos? I'm thinking about getting a pair...

    ReplyDelete
  43. jcrack: your username says it all!

Most of mine are from last year or earlier (but this doesn't mean my spending has gone down):

3 of the flared corduroy skirts from winter before last, in maroon, brown, and "deep peacock."

2 of last year's bateau neck cashmere sweaters, one purple, one black

2 of last year's bootcut cords

    this year:

2 of spring's bootcut jeans in stretch dark rinse wash

    yikes.

    this year:
2 jackie cardigans, bright pink and black
2 amelia tanks in hammered silk

    ReplyDelete
  44. Multiple slub tees (last 2 years), 5 perfect tees, 2 tissue t necks.

2 cashmere sweaters (1 outlet, 1 sale this fall)- note cannot tell the difference in quality between the 2)

    yoga jackets

    summerweight chino shorts

hoodie sweatshirts (too many to mention)

    ReplyDelete
  45. appgirl: I find the bootcut cords fit like the chinos. I am 5'4 and I had to order the regular size over the short because the rise was too short, I also found they grab in the thigh so I sized up.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oops..I forgot I also own the Emelia blouse in two colors (purple and white) and the Marcella in two colors (honey glaze and white)..

Once you find the fit and style that works for you, it's just a matter of camping out and watching the price drop on final sale...

    ReplyDelete
  47. I have the chiffon bow city tee cardi in both champagne and black. They are the only things of which I have bought multis without gift cards and at full price. They are just really cute and easy to put on over a tee or tank to give a polished yet laid back look.

    I also have:

2 tie-front dresses (soft azalea and navy)

2 jersey tank dresses (papaya and navy - would also get gray or black)

3 pleat front tissue tops (white, navy, shell)

2 summerweight bermuda shorts (navy, khaki)

3 slub zip hoodies (white, gray, navy)

4 Belle skirts (buttercup, rhubarb, paintbrush floral, sketchbook roses) - I bought the last 2 full price, but with gift cards. As many of you know, I love the Belle skirt so! I wish they would come out with more colors and prints. I am currently eyeing the silk taffeta Belle in eggplant ;)

Wow I had more than I thought. I wonder if I am forgetting anything.

  48. Oh boy, here we go! :)

    -6 Cafe Capris
-Cashmere T's, l-sleeve, too many to count
    -3 Cashmere Bateau
    -4 Silky Pleated Tops
-3 Longsleeve silky pleated tops (Lux Knit)
    -Graphic Painter Tees (countless)
    -Perfect Fit t's (countless)
    -2 Tartines
    -3 Jackies
    -2 Sophie Peacoats

Could be more but I've lost track! LOL! :D

  50. I love the cambridge turtleneck sweaters. I have it in black, snow, green, navy and black. When you live in upstate Ny you need warm sweaters, it gets real cold here.
I also have several of the lofty shawl collar sweaters that I bought last year in black, navy and grey.

thanks so much for the detailed take on the baird mcnutt!

i made my purchases! the navy, bright flame, and khaki tan.

  64. Weab & jcrewjunkie:

I am surprised to know that many of you think Amelia tank is very itchy. Also I found that stitches of J.Crew silk tanks come aprat very easily...(3 out of 4 tanks came apart). I do love them, but it would be much better if J.Crew can improve stitching.

  65. I have 4 bootcut cords, 2 dream tie cardigans, 2 Lydia blouses, 2 pairs of patent leather Mary Janes, 2 pairs of peep toe Mary Janes, 2 dream argyle v-necks. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I have 3 pairs of the cafe capris, 2 of the French 101 tees, 3 pairs of the chino 3" shorts, and 2 chino minis. I have a few things that I would definately have bought multiples if I could have.

    ReplyDelete
  67. carmen - You are very welcome. :-) You are getting such a deal! I hope you love them. The navy and khaki tan are beautiful basics. So cute as I said w/the piper and jeans. I am a proud owner of the acorn necklace so I'll have to try that w/the khaki tan. The bright flame is not for the faint of heart but it is a gorgeous color. What's great about the jacket is it doesn't have an obvious linen texture, so I'll be wearing mine through Fall.

  68. Naomi,
You mentioned you are surprised about the Amelia being itchy. How so? Doesn't it itch you? It about drove me crazy and I had it on for all of 10 minutes.

It does! I thought I was the only one who felt Amelia was super itchy. That's why I was surprised:) Cutting off chiffon is a good idea. I will cut it off too!

  72. Anony@2:47

I agree with you. While I like/love to buy JCrew...this topic/post is just rubbing me the wrong way too! Glad I am not the only one.

  73. Naomi, Let us know how the cutting goes...I have sensitive skin but this seems like a universal Amelia tank problem!!!

  74. this is great thread - weab and jcrewjunkie, you are cracking me up! here is my LONG list of multiples:

    - tissue tees in v-neck, crewneck long sleeve and short sleeve - too many to count
    - 2 cotton fionas (papaya and navy)
    - 2 dream tie cardis (navy and eggplant)
    - 2 dream sash cardis (black and silver)
    - 2 cafe capris - khaki and fog
    - too many graphic tees to count
    - 2 velvet bellas
    - 2 herringbone bellas
    - 2 v-neck long sleeve cotton cardis
    - phoebe dress (2007 holiday) in winter white and the red plaid cotton version
    - 2 piazza cotton sweater jackets (navy and tangerine color)
    - too many pairs of jcrew ballet flats to name

I think there is more, but I can't think of it all! Yes I have problems, but I am also a big sale/ebay buyer so these definitely weren't all full price!

  75. I enjoy this blog because I like J.Crew, and I enjoy admiring and discussing the beautiful pieces that they create. I think that clothing can be viewed as a form of art, and my appreciation of J.Crew falls along those lines. I read this blog because that is often how J.Crew clothing is viewed. However, in a posting like this, where readers so blatantly compare the extent of excess and wasteful spending (and I’m sure that readers will try to defend that their spending was not excessive or wasteful) it hits the wrong chord with me where I can help but think about how we all can try to live a simpler life.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Ok anons who don't like this post...

We're not celebrating materialism, and I'm sure many who have posted can appreciate a simpler life (me included). But, if you shop mainly at J. Crew, it seems only normal to have duplicates of items and to have a fair amount of items listed. In fact, my clothes purchases this year have ONLY come from J. Crew - so my list hardly represents me as a materialistic person! Whether you have 1 Bella or 2, you don't need either - so don't judge those who admit to having multiples.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I don't think it's a matter of differing opinions that's at issue here, it's a condemnation of any and every issue discussed on this board.

Of course all opinions are welcome. However, if you don't want to discuss all things related to Jcrew in a kind and friendly manner, then perhaps you're reading the wrong blog....

    ReplyDelete
  78. I understand discomfort with extreme materialism but I don't think that is really an issue in this post... we have to keep a few things in mind:

-- this is a blog about clothes. We are only talking about one aspect of our lives, and the fact that someone has a lot of tissue tees is not a reflection of who they are as a person. It is also worth noting that many of the posters on this blog are students, teachers, social workers, etc -- not exactly "The Real Housewives of..." on bravo types. Also, since it is a blog about clothes, take that as a warning, skip the comments, and save yourself the angst if it bothers you so much.

-- It's J.Crew, it's not Prada, and most of the multiples are t-shirts and sweaters that get extremely marked down -- e.g. I have three pairs of the same pants, but I got them for $12/each, which is about the same as a pair of jeans from old navy. And just because you have several of the same thing doesn't mean you have a lot of clothing. Whether or not having a lot of clothing is a bad thing or something to judge someone about is another issue, but this really is not an indication.

-- I don't think anyone here is bragging. They are merely sharing which items they loved so much that they bought another one.

I just find it strange how much animosity gets stirred up. It's clothes, it's fun, can't we all just get along?

    ReplyDelete
  79. I have lots of pairs of both the boot cut and hip slung jeans. I have lots of Jackie cardigans and shells and perfect fit tees. I also have three cashmere turtlenecks and cashmere cable knit crew necks. Oh an I own lots of multiples in the shorts department (but I feel like that doesnt count). Other than that I try to cary my wardrobe so I tend to not buy multiples. Though I do wish I had bought more featherweight merino sweaters last year when the cut and fit were better and before I put mine in the dryer (ooops)

    ReplyDelete
  80. I agree with WEAB: every topic discussed on here is now subject to MULTIPLE condemning and negative comments, and quite frankly it's really beginning to become quite old. If you know that a topic is going to upset you, perhaps you shouldn't read it...just a thought...

    ReplyDelete
  81. typo= cary is supposed to read vary

"I try to vary my wardrobe"

    ReplyDelete
  82. I would like to second what WEAB and FFM have said. There is no reason to say anything negative towards anyone else here. If you don't like it please just skip over it. Reading negative comments really does take all the fun out of blogging.

    ReplyDelete
  83. FFM and WEAB:

As one who reads and enjoys this blog as much as anyone else, I as a dissenter have just as much of a reason to voice my opinion on the topics of the blog as anyone else. All points of views should be accepted on this blog, even if it is one that is not mutually agreed upon. As we all gush over J.Crew, maybe certain self-reflections are important regarding such things. You don't have to be a millionaire or housewife on the orange county shows to get stuck in the traps of materialism and excess.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Anon @ 4:04:
At least to me the problem isn't dissenting opinions, it's nastiness. Say what you want, but do it politely. Not only does it not upset people, but civil comments are taken more seriously than nasty ones.

    ReplyDelete
  85. anon: I understand what you're saying and you have every right to that opinion. I would just like to remind you that this blog is about a clothing store.

    ReplyDelete
  86. btw, my comment was directed to anon @4:04.

  87. I second FFM and Weab!

I also forgot that I have 2 chiffon rose belts ($6 each - yay!) that I am still trying to figure out how to wear conservatively. Maybe I will ask FFM when she guest blogs :)

  88. To Anonymous:

Who are you to criticize anyone else's buying habits? Do you know what they need in their lives? Do you know what looks good on them?

Maybe I have three cashmere J.Crew Sweaters but those are the only sweaters that fit me and that I own. Do you know that? So what may seem like excess to you, may actually be frugal and sensible shopping for someone else. I own three pairs of J.Crew 10" burmuda shorts, but I only own 6 pairs of shorts over all... They look good on me and I wear them ALL the time. For me I don't own a lot but I buy things that look good on me and make me feel good. For me that is money well spent and I would bet that a lot of people here feel the same way.

All my suits are J.Crew but they look good on me and when I walk into a meeting I feel like I have a right to command attention. And they are a lot cheaper than prada... that is isnt excessive the practical and actually inexpensive as suits go (and yes I bought them all ON SALE while I was in Grad School)

    ReplyDelete
  89. anon at 3:51: WELL SAID!!! I couldn't even top that....you hit the nail right on the head. It's J.Crew people, and we are talking tees and sweaters. Fashion is essentially superficial...SO WHAT???!!! This is a blog based on fashion. If you don't like the topic, move on to the next.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I've got three herringbone Bellas: Azalea, Black and charcoal, and I love them and wear them often :-)

I just recently tried on the herringbone Fiona (thought it looked cute but wasn't going to buy one because of my Bella ownership) and boy was I disappointed in how it fit me. Yikes - it was so boxy and just hung so badly. I hope others are having more success with this jacket.

    Great topic, btw, Alexis :-)

    ReplyDelete
  91. Anon at 3:51 - well put.

I agree with WEAB, FFM, and Blumre. I think we all prefer a fun place to talk about clothes, not a place that criticizes people who post about clothes.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I find it very surprising that someone would write a comment about how wasteful and excessive shopping is.

The cardinal rule is remember your audience. Perhaps that person needs to find another site to express opinions on.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Thanks Blumre and anon@3:51. I miss when things were positive on here. I feel like anymore it's pick pick pick :P Let's get back to the clothes!

    ReplyDelete
  94. I agree with weab, ffm, and blumre. If you know that this topic is going to bother you, don't read it. If you choose to read it, don't respond with nastiness. While I own 8 pair of favorite fit chinos, I haven't paid more than $30 for a pair, and most cost $20 or less. And, I have purchased them over 5 years. So, that isn't excess. They are the only pants that fit me well, and so I have many pair in my wardrobe. And, I will probably add more through the years - but only on sale. I want the dark fog, but I am waiting until they get marked down.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I love this blog because it is a lot of fun. Also everyone is very nice. Let's get back to a positive note.

    ReplyDelete
  96. michelle: I actually styled several sets with the rosette belts a couple of weeks ago if you get the chance to look. :)

    ReplyDelete
  97. Opinions are not necessarily the issue...it is the judgemental and nasty tone that way too many of the recent posts have that are the problem. If you don't like what we discuss, you are more than welcome to go someplace else. Many of us have enjoyed this blog from the beginning, enjoy discussing ALL things J.Crew, and are very polite, friendly, and civil with each other. That is the way this blog is intended to be...if you don't like it...please do move on and leave us alone.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Differing opinions is the issue, if the opinion is different from the mainstream of opinion posted here they are attacked. (not talking about the trolls who post rude comments)

    ReplyDelete
  99. My most expensive duplicates are my cashmere Bristol sweaters from last year. I got them both ridiculously cheaply, but still feel somewhat guilty. I also have a lot of cafe capris and jackie twinsets. I wore my capris literally every single day this summer and have not had a day without a Jackie contributing to my outfit in two weeks. I love the anachronism of being a housewife with pearls and a twin-set in the '00s.

Let me just say, for the record. Why are any of us apologizing for or protesting the materialism that this entails? If you have more than two of any item. Whether it be a different color or not, it is a form of materialism. Who cares? I am sure you are not all rampant hedonists without care or contribution to society. Just embrace what this says about your taste in clothing and commitment to looking good and don't worry about it. Also, given the current economic climate, I think you should celebrate your contributions to the economy in it's time of need.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Guys, when you respond to nasty comments, you are giving the nasty person what they seek-ATTENTION.

Please everyone-work together, and ignore them.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I'm just curious about how tall everyone is? I'm 5'10" but, I have noted, with a longer waist. I can't wear the Jackie cardigan without trying to tug it down every ten minutes! Anyone remember the old J. Crew (early 2000s, and indeed, for most retailers) when everything was cut to "high waist"? All the cardigans were like shrugs on me. My favorite this year is the merino glass-button cardigan. But I guess the fact that all of you love the Jackie and own multiples of it is why it comes back year after year.

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  102. Audrey - I am 5' 6" and can only dream of your willowy height.

    ReplyDelete
  103. FFM: I just made a couple of sets, and am going to look at yours. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Ugh. Anons, please leave your judginess at the door. You read the title of this post, what did you think the comments were going to be? "Oh, I don't have any duplicates at all!"? Honestly, I wish Alexis would disable anonymous comments, as they have been getting worse over the past few weeks. I know that most of the anons are great, but what's that saying about a few bad apples?

    ReplyDelete
  105. I don't have too many multiples...yet. I think I have about six Jackie cardigans, but strangely enough, not black, which is what I need. I also have two of the merino featherweight glass button cardigans (maize and heather flannel). I've been drooling over the hammered-silk tanks for a while and would love to get multiples of those. Can anyone tell me how they fit? I'm especially interested in how long they are...I'm pretty short (5') but have a longish torso.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I celebrate materialism!

Materialism is a word, and words are invented by fallible humans. Often what is labeled as materialism encompasses many different concepts.

Materialism, and the drive to collect 'stuff' is a basic human drive like hunger and mating. It is an evolutionary manifestation of the survival instinct that we carry in our DNA. Complain if you must, but it's never going. It's in us. It runs through our veins.

Materialism created The Statue of David, The Eiffel Tower, The buildings of Frank Gehry, the intricate rugs of India, Gorgeous Chinese porcelain vases, and countless other beautiful THINGS. Yes, THINGS.

THINGS are good. Capitalism is good. Wealth is good.

If your 'have not' status bothers you, don't take it out on us.

    Thank you.

  108. I think this is still a fun blog to read. I think the main thing is to just ignore the negative comments and kept reading and posting the positive ones. The positive comments greatly outweight the one, two or three negative ones. Just skip them....I love this blog and everyone has been nice to me (except one time when I got a little confused:) he he

    ReplyDelete
  109. Michelle, I'm not ffm nor do I have her style sense, but I like the chiffon rose belt with the luxe knit top (3/4 sleeves). This top is a little long on me (I'm 5'4") and a little loose. I will wear it without a belt, but it does look cute with the belt. I have 2 of the belts and I've been having a hard time wearing them. I put one on, don't like it, and take it back off. But, I will wear it with this top. HTH

    ReplyDelete
  110. audrey, I am 5'10" inches too....okay, 5'9 3/4" to be exact! I don't have a long waist/torso though. I have long arms and legs. I can't wear Tall clothing in any brand as it just doesn't fit me right so I have to look for things that run long in the arms and legs! Nice to met another tall person on this blog!

    ReplyDelete
  111. I have multiples of so many items! That's the beauty of JCrew. Not only are their styles great, but their color options are A-MAZING!

Boot-cut cords. I am almost 5'9, and the regulars fit me fabulously! I have faded cement, acorn, and coral

    Pleated jersey tank-black and white

I honestly have dresser drawers filled with rainbows of favorite tanks, short-sleeved perfect fit tees, and long-sleeved perfect fit tees. Every color under the rainbow of all styles, seriously. Until I am cured, I realize that this will be never-ending because JCREW continues to offer awesome new colors!! UGH!

I bought all three colors of the jersey bateau dress. Slate, navy, strawberry

5 different colors of last years espadrilles

    10 silk ribbon sashes/belts

    8 headscarves

    4 Jackies

Numerous slub/graphic tees(maps, pineapple, seize il giorno, islands, dictionary, crests)

    4 Dream Turtleneck sweaters

    2 Tartines--black & heather mushroom

    2 Marsala flats--silver & bronze

City fit capris--lime, rhubarb, black, british khaki

Cooper Jacket--british khaki, I hope to soon add rhubarb if it goes down in price

I agree with the others. Most of these items are bought at ridiculously inexpensive prices! The only items that I have paid full retail for is my watercolor Lydia & a blue printed Jackie from last year!

I must admit that this site does fuel my addiction. After reading many posts, I have reconsidered and purchased many pieces that did not strike me initially. JCrew should seriously appreciate what this blog, and all of its contributors do to promote their company!

Looking at my above list makes me realize I have a problem. I guess the first step is admitting it, right? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  112. I would add to this conversation that I am 5'7" and for some cords I need a tall. Also for some chinos I have needed a Tall in one pair and a regular in another. As one store associate put it "its all in who was at the sewing machine that day." For someone who is sort of in between regular and tall this can be very frustrating. I would say the best option is to try on whatever you aren't sure about.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Audrey - your post made me think of how I have one of the merino glass button cardigans - bought in early August -- still nicely folded with tags untouched because I have no idea how to wear it! I am 5'7 -- perhaps my lack of height is the issue?

    ReplyDelete
  114. A few things I forgot:
5 or 6 of those chain link headbands-LOVE! And tons of their headbands in general
4 pairs of the buttery twill chinos
    2 cord pencil skirts
    2 denim pencil skirts
    10 or more PJ pants
    2 linen ruffle skirts
    3 tieback femme slub tees
3 empire femme ruffle camis (these are so flattering and cute I actually got two in white, one in aqua)
5 Emily blouses (the yellow bunny print, black stripe, pink stripe, navy swiss dot, white swiss dot)
    2 Jessie blouses
2 airy knotted blouses (one in ivory, one in grey w/ white polka dots)
2 Lisa stretch 3/4 sleeve button up blouses
3 or 4 pairs of cafe capris
2 pairs of their mary jane heels (black, espresso)
Then a bunch of random multiples, like 2 pique hoodies, 2 airy cotton crinkle skirts, and tons of their perfect fit v-necks (I only wear these hiking and to the gym) and tons of their ribbed tanks (I only wear these as PJs). If I see something I like, I almost ALWAYS buy at least two, especially if it is something basic like pants (once you find a good fit, stock up!) or cardigans that I will wear every day.

    ReplyDelete
  115. lleila jogged my memory, I also have two pique hoodies (the best things on warm summer nights) and two luxe knit hoddies.

    ReplyDelete
  116. audrey: (I love your name :D - tee hee) I guess I'll be the "short Audrey", as I'm 5'2", but dream of being taller...

I don't generally order petites because I'm broad shouldered, so I practically swim in some of the JC offerings. It's interesting to see how the JC models wear the clothing because the same item can look *very* different on a shortie like me...I go between a size 6-8 and sometimes 10 (certainly from past seasons).

    ReplyDelete
  117. math teacher: thanks for the tip on the luxe knit top. I am also 5'4" :) What size do you wear? I like how it is styled with the belt in the pic on the website and I'm thinking about picking one up. Also, I put together a few sets on polyvore with some possibilities, if you are interested. My username is mchesq.

    ReplyDelete
  118. michelle: i just got the black and cream rosette belt and plan on wearing it with the cashmere black turtlenck (they are kind of long this year) like 6 inches up from the hem of the sweater. Before I splurge on the cashmere t-neck i was thinking of trying it with the old navy one first ($20) and if i love the look get the j crew cashmere one :) if you have any ideas i would love to hear them as i have 3 colors of rosette belts!

  119. Matchstick cords in many colors, bootcut cords and denim in many variations-styles and colors. (BTW people are asking-I think the bootcut run a size big this year and matchstick I could choose between 27 & 28 but 28 fit me just a bit better through thighs.) For anyone's fit reference/questions etc. I am 5'7" and have various denim: white matchsticks short and regular, hipslung short, dark matchstick jean-reg, vintage jean and trouser jean.

Perfect fit tanks in LOTS of colors

Vintage Painters Tee in all colors
    but black

Silky jersey tank all colors but persimmon

    Dream cable t-necks (last year)

    Popover sweaters (last year)

    Jackies galore:)

    Hammered silk tanks

Colored sparkly rhinestone bracelets (in stores now on sale $14.99+20%+20% VERY PRETTY STACKED COME IN VARIOUS COLORS)

Ribbon rosette belts in all colors and flower rhinestone ribbon belts in 3 colors

skinny belts-purple, gold, brown calf hair, calf hair with pk patent
    gold jean belt

    liza pattern peep toes-LOVE THESE

    calf hair flats and pumps

TOO MANY GRAPHIC TEES TO COUNT

EVERYTHING IS BOUGHT ON SALE-whether coupon, promo, PS discount, Ebay etc. I really don't HAVE to pay full price:)

  120. I realized that there was someone else also using name "k". haha. So the other K, I also have long torso! I'm about 5 4! anyway I'm going to change my name not to confuse anyone!

    ReplyDelete
  121. Michelle, I bought the medium, which is my sweater size. I usually wear a large in the fitted tees. The small cut in too far on my shoulders, maybe b/c I have broad shoulders. HTH

    ReplyDelete
  122. covert5...thanks for the info on bootcut cords. I am 5'6" and am usually between a size 2 and 4, but the bootcut jeans (in a 28) were slightly snug in the thighs. not in a bad way, but if there's no stretch, i can't deal with the tightness on a comfort level. from what i'm hearing from you all, i should just stick with my regular size for the cords. i can't believe i've been a crew fan for this long and have NEVER bought any bootcut cords! i love love love cords, but have been stuck with the lesser brands' versions, which end up stretching out and looking cheap after awhile.

*i wish they came in honey glaze...is the golden yellow color close?

    ReplyDelete
  123. jen_brak -- your post reminded me of what my boyfriend has been telling me for months. I bought my first condo in April and new furniture and paintings to go in it, and since then I've been getting so many J.Crew items shipped to me here that I'm on a first-name basis with my new UPS driver (he even asks me "anything you need to send back today?" when he sees me). So my boyfriend jokes that when economists review 2008, they'll conclude that the economy sucked, except for one girl in Chicago who tried her hardest to get it to rally.

    ReplyDelete
  124. nerdycrew,

Sorry for the confusion! I'm the fellow long torso girl, haha. I didn't realize I was posting under another name when I wrote that. Usually when I post (which is rarely), I post under Kristin. Sorry about that. :)

    ReplyDelete
  125. appgal-you are welcome!

I am confused though--the bootcut cords are sized 2, 4 etc and the matchsticks are 27, 28 (WHY? is a good question-to keep us well confused, perhaps;)

You mentioned sz 27 in bootcut. Maybe there's another I don't know about...not sure.

    ReplyDelete
  126. covert: sorry for the confusion! I mentioned a sz 28 in the bootcut JEANS because that was the only point of reference i had for jcrew's bootcut pants. I was trying to compare the cords to the jeans in terms of fit, since i've never tried the boot cords on before :)

    ReplyDelete
  127. Ohhh--I gotcha-I bought a 2 in bootcut and 28 in matchstick-depends on build though too. There's more room in the thigh/butt of bootcut.

    ReplyDelete
  128. good...i need more room in those areas-hehe :)

  130. Kitchy - Congrats on your condo and other purchases. Let your boyfriend know that there is a girl in Ct doing her fair share as well. My UPS man and I have become quite friendly. Sometimes we will see each other in town and he will just pull the package from the truck and give it to me there.

  131. Ooh fun question! I'm such a cardigan fanatic!

I have 5 Jackies in different colors (ivory, light blue, brown, hot pink and green!) I love the fit of the Jackies!

I have navy and pink cashmere cardigans and plan to buy more when they get marked down end of season.

I don't have multiples but have a few different styles of merino cardigans- navy with the flower, the ruffle one in deep persimmon, and a burgundy one from a few seasons past.

I also have several favorite fit khakis in stone in different lengths (full length, cropped , regular, short, all for different occasions)

    ReplyDelete
  132. jenn_brak - mine will do the same thing! he'll see me out walking my dogs and ask "do you want your packages now or later?" love those UPS guys.

    ReplyDelete
  133. lindsay: I made some sets on polyvore earlier, and in fact I put the cream and black rosette belt with a black t-neck too :) FFM also did that, which is where I got my inspiration. I also put the slate/rhubarb belt with a cream turtleneck, and I like the way that turned out.

hdayton: The first thing that came to mind when I got to the end of your comment was "and a partridge in a pear tree!" What an impressive collection :) Congrats, that is awesome!

  137. Anon - Oh thank goodness, someone to have fun with tonight. Please, bring on more of your sweeping generalizations. Let me first counter you though by saying that my husband and I do not carry any credit card debt. Could it be possible that we know where we are spending our money and choose to be more frugal in some areas because we are less responsible in others? Can't wait for you Baby Boomers to wipe out the SS as we pay for it. Also, just to give you more ammunition - I am a military veteran, college graduate, SAHM, and volunteer.

  138. I used to love this board, now it's just solely...sad. Showcasing how supposed "rich" you are, whether it's in how much you've spent or how many pieces you own is silly.

Suggestion: try putting together a post that allows people to say what they've donated to a woman's shelter, or a woman's center that specializes in getting abused women back into the work force.

That would seem like a better use of our clothing from past seasons, rather than superficially competing for "best dressed".

  140. Okay - Let's just all get back to a reasonable perspective here. We do not know each other. We do not know what our individual financial situations are. Please stop considering that just because someone has 6 tops they have never donated to a charity or served soup at a shelter. You just can't decide what kind of person someone is based on the limited amount of information in these posts. Do more research, find out the whole story, don't believe the soundbites.

  141. Jenn Brak- Percept is sometimes reality. No slam against you, but those with guilty consciences will quickly defend themselves!

I agree with the above poster that it WOULD be a good idea for Alexis' charitable side to come out and do a really conscience-cleansing post. That way, even the shallow people can reflect on how they can help others.

  143. Okay everyone, just take a deep breath! Everyone has something "frivolous" they spend money on, whether it's clothes or coffee or vacations or books or movies or antiques or whatever. What's frivolous to one person is treasure to someone else. In fact, as far as collecting "things" goes, there was a really interesting article on cnn.com today about how people got through the Great Depression partly by hoarding items: "The Great Depression turned many Americans into packrats who couldn't bear to part with anything of potential value. They couldn't always afford to buy what they needed." http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/10/13/depression.irpt/index.html?iref=newssearch

The fact that people have go-to clothing they know fits and makes them look good has pretty much no bearing on their value as a human being (and let's not forget that a lot of people stock up when fave items go on sale!!!). I know times are really tough right now and the election is putting people on edge, regardless of what side you're on, but that doesn't mean people should deride other people's choices in life, especially when such derision is based on such a tiny sliver of detail on a person's life.

    Back to happy discussions!

  145. Puhlease! - Alexis can do a conscience cleansing post if she feels the need, but I won't read it. That is what the rest of my life is about, this blog is about my gulity pleasure. I am just so tired of the judgement. How can you possibly judge people on the number of shirts they own? Is there a correct number? My conscience is pretty clear and I have a full walk-in closet.

  149. Jenn_Brek, I agree! This is a blog dedicated to our love for J. Crew clothes. It is not a blog for conscience-cleansing! Seriously, go find the appropriate outlet for your comments, because this is not the place.

  151. Oh Geez -- why the negativity !?! While I understand what some of the posts were perhaps trying to get at making a point about helping those in need etc, which obviously are important responsibilities for all bloggers and I doubt anyone would argue against-- however, as Jenn pointed out and as this blog makes perfectly clear ... the subject of this blog is J Crew clothes, and yes those are material items. If that bothers you, no one is forcing you to read it.

Clearly everyone is entitled to their own views, but using a blog dedicated to a clothing brand to express those views in a tone some might find, out of line, is the wrong forum. As others have suggested: if comments about color, size, style, multiples and anticipation of a holiday line upset you or seem to go against your morals -- save your piece of mind and do not bother to read them!

Unfortunately it seems some take other's comments as a personal attack, when in reality any frequenter or this blog or fan who enjoys discussing an interest of theirs such as J Crew, knows these comments are purely, dare I say it, for fun!

Criticizing and attacking others via internet blog posting is out of line, and to take it to the extent of attacking people's character based on a blog posting (about clothes) is rather rude, and in poor taste. So for those persons so upset by the comments, save your time and energy and those who enjoy this blog -- and don't read them!

  155. Um, can everyone take a moment and look at the title of this website. It's "J Crew Afficionada". We're here to talk about J Crew. Yes, that's right folks. J Crew! Oddly enough that's what we do at J Crew Afficionada. Repeat: we discuss J Crew! Should I repeat it again? This blog is not called Financial Times Afficionada, or Iraq War Afficionada, (do you get my drift?). Don't waste my time posting your self-riteous and angry comments on THIS blog. Thank you and have a better day.

  156. Anon @ 3:51 PM - Perfectly stated!

kitchy7 - I wish my UPS driver was excited to show up to my door. She doesn't make it fun. I had a fun guy the other day drop off a package from Piper Lime. Guess I'm shallow and ridiculous. I will be with you and the anamoly of people who are still shopping and propping up the economy as best we can. Tongue in cheek alert for the dissenters.

AppGal - Yeah, what's up with boot cords in 2,4 and the matchstick in 28, 29? I have a P6 in boot cut and 28S in matchstick. I'm surprised we are the same size in matchstick. Maybe I weigh a little less than last year's boot cuts. I can only hope :-)

When I saw 180 posts I knew I was going to click onto a hot mess and the anons (and others) didn't disappoint. This is a shopping blog for one company and that's all I come here to read about. I was cracking up as I read the posts and didn't judge anyone for the number of items they have. I have a ton of J Crew but I know what else I have/don't have in my closets, the companies I donate to, etc.. so I have nothing to prove. If I want other mental fare I go elsewhere for that. Don't cave, Alexis. Not that you have time anyway. I wish I had bought multiples of something today just to piss some more people off. *lol*

Some people are upset because they feel they represent the opposite viewpoint and are criticized for it as a result. Hey...if you don't like the thread. Don't. Participate. This is not a debating forum. And if you *do* jump in and your viewpoint is critical of others, you can expect someone to throw it right back at you. That's the major problem w/the people who want to show the flipside -- it starts to get personal.

  162. *sighs*

Reading through these comments make me really sad. There are so many cool, interesting, helpful people on these boards (including many of the anons), but half the time, I'm afraid to read because the comments do degrade to...well *points above* this.

Alexis has made numerous pleas for common courtesy, that many of the anonymous comments (not to be confused with commentators) have ignored. I realize that it's useless to keep asking...but still, this makes me quite sad.

This board was (and still is, despite this bile) a fun reprieve from the rest of my life. Obvious, there's far more to me (and to every single poster here, I bet) than just someone who loves j.crew. To attempt to "diagnose our problems" from our confession that we liked some items enough to buy a second one (usually steeply on sale!)...is simply ridiculous. And more to the point, THIS ISN'T THE PLACE FOR IT. It's a shopping blog. We discuss (mostly) shopping...to accuse us liking shopping is rather like walking into a Catholic mass and accusing everyone of being religious. It might or might not be true, for starters...and you're certainly ranting at the wrong audience.

    ReplyDelete
  163. You know what's funny? There are pro and con posters and you both egg each other on. Things could be calm and then insults are exchanged and then things seemingly calm down. Then you have posters that can't wait to give their 2 cents and rehash the whole situation. I wouldn't be surprised if auryane's comment rekindles the "love" everyone has for one another. But then again, maybe Alexis likes having these comments up because they draw in the crowds and her site gets more popular by the minute...just a thought.

  164. Oooook. Back to... topic.

Anon at 6:08 PM (who was 5'7")

I don't think your height is an issue for the merino glass button cardigan. I think the trick might be proportion... It is thinner and works well as a layering piece; I also feel like it streamlines what I'm wearing.

With my long cardigans, I usually keep the bottom leaner and narrow, eg, with my matchstick cords. (But the matchstick cords might not be for everyone, so you can try some skinny/bootcut jeans or a pencil skirt.) I've also worn my glass button cardigan on top of a fuller dress so that the top shape is narrow and the bottom is flared. J. Crew has shown it belted in one catalogue; I'm always slow to do the 'belt over clothing' option but that is also another way to wear it.

I'm sorry for this long response, I just really love long cardigans because they always make me feel longer and cozier, and if you have it in your closet, why not take it out in the fall and play with it?

  165. I am upset to read some of these comments. This blog is suppose to be fun and about clothing. I work very hard for my money over 60 hrs a week and have two kids. My kids are taken care of, I have my savings for retirement, college savings for their tution ,I have a house , etc.. I put myself through college and it took me 10 years to pay off my student loans, to get me where I am today. If I want to buy 3 of one thing I will. I deserve it. Alexis you have done a great job on this website, don't let the negative things get you down, remember in this world there are always negative people.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Hey Alexis, why don't you remove ALL of the negative comments -- on BOTH sides? The only comments you are removing are the dissenting opinions, which I guess I understand, since you do not agree with them. However, I don't think leaving all the snotty retorts from the pro-materialism people is a very immature response. In my opinion, if you are going to manipulate the so-called "open blog" by removing posts, you should remove ALL of the posts that fall under the topic.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Lauren...

I am removing just "the worst" comments on both sides.

Also, I do my best to make sure that both sides are still represented. There are many posts that represent the "minority" view on this topic that still remain here. :)

Also, keep in mind that the terms you just used (and some directed at me too) like "snotty retorts", "very immature response", "going to manipulate the so-called "open-blog" by removing posts" makes it harder for me to enjoy this blog. :(

  168. I'm late to the controversy, but I just wanted to add that my duplicate purchases have been made over the course of literally a decade of jcrew shopping. It's not like I bought 5 cashmere sweaters last winter. I'm definitely not rich, and admittedly I probably spend a bit more than I should on jcrew (though the only other store I shop at more frequently is the Goodwill!).

I think a lot of us here work hard for our money, or save in other places so that we can have a few nice things. Also, not all of us have children or mortgages, so we spend our extra income on clothing.

    ReplyDelete
  169. I'm keeping it on topic because despite what anyone says here, those who shop JCrew regularly will continue to do so and the haters that don't will continue to hate.
I have multiples in everything from Jackie cardigans to City ballet flats to favorite tanks. The feeling you get from finding that jacket that fits like a glove or the pants that accentuate your fab assets is unparalleled, so I tend to stock up on items such as matchsticks and trousers (jeans and cords), the university trousers in every color (working a 9-5 affords me this right and calls to its necessity), slim stretch and kelly shirts, tissue turtlenecks, perfect fit tees and tanks, ribbon belts, argyle socks and knee highs, the stretch wool pencil skirts (have you ladies tried them? so flattering! --side note though.. a true size 0 cannot fit the regular 0 because it's cut about a size too big), and so on.
I am not petite by any stretch of the imagination which works to my advantage as there are several men's items that I live for: the cotton/cashmere vneck cardigans (on sale now!), the vintage fleece sweats, hoodies and track jackets, and the ties!
One final point--final sale is not such a terrible thing. Online sucks but in stores it's perfectly justifiable. Happy shopping!

    ReplyDelete
  170. ...and to piggyback on Heather's comment, I too have compiled duplicates over the past 5-6 years which is another reason why my loyalty remains with JCrew--clothes that can last a decade!

    ReplyDelete
  171. I have multiples in the cafe capris, matchstick jeans, matchstick cords, tissue turtlenecks, lexington jacket, piazza jacket, and the lydia blouses.

  172. There were 3 parts to the original question. Most people got 1 but missed 2 and 3 so other took that as bragging. I would have loved to hear about fit on some of these items -- at least the ones that are currently still available.

  173. Last winter I bought:
1)three Crystal-button cardigans--yellow, green, and pink. Just love the bright colors in the winter and the blinkblink buttons.

2)two phoebe blouses, the ruffles are perfect to wear underneath any v-neck sweater. And because I am petite, the big round neck makes my neck looks longer :)

    And this summer I got:
    1) two Kate dresses: the first two colors that were made, the colors are so bright and unique (don't like the navy one that they made as the second patch), and the dresses are so summery.

2)two Frances Blouses. They are just so cute.

  174. Pretty much 99% of my wardrobe is Jcrew clothes and louboutin shoes so yes, I do buy multis (of both brands ;-)). The jeans, the cashmere sweaters (can never have too many crews/cardis, and I like the button downs in the liberty prints, so I try to buy 1 of each print. I love the patent MJs from last year in black and the bright pink, and the Marsala flats in gold and calf hair cheetah print. I also love the oslo bag and have one in brown and one in the brown and calf hair leopard/brown leather.
