"Thanks!" to Lauren (check out her great site: fashionism.org) who shared with us an interesting entry from one of her members:
"When I was placing an order on Friday, the SA told me that they had a meeting that week and were told that they can no longer PM store discounts!"
I am not sure if this latest news is true or not. However, it is something definitely to consider the next time you are placing an order, using the red phone at a J.Crew store or elsewhere, and hoping to price match the store.
I have a feeling this IS true...I emailed my online PS earlier this week to ask about getting a PM for my store's extra 30% off, and this was her reply:
ReplyDelete*In response to your question about sale price matching, I know we have done this a lot in the past and especially with our system upgrades we were giving out accommodations a lot more than policy usually allows for. This week we have been told that we are going back to only honoring sale prices from stores when the order is placed from the red phone in the store.*
It sounds as if they will still PM IF you are IN the store and call from the red phone, but not if you are calling from home. :)
Thanks FFM for letting us know!
ReplyDeleteOn a bright note, at least they will still price match in their stores (using the red phone). :)
It isn't a bright note for those of us who don't live anywhere near a darn store! Grrrr. But you are correct, Alexis, it is still a bright spot for those of you who have a store nearby...and I am glad for that! :)
ReplyDeleteJcrewJunkie: I completely agree with you that it is sad news. :(
ReplyDeleteBut at least J.Crew decided to not remove the perk entirely, and for that I am very grateful for. :)
Great. Can I send jcrew my gas bill for driving to the nearest jcrew store, which is 13-14 hours away, so I can call in from a red phone? Assholes.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like J Crew needs to have some consistency in their pricing and promotions. It is SUPER frustrating to hear that sometimes they PM, sometimes they don't and some stores offer an extra 20% if you spend x$ and others do not. Some offer 40% off FS others 30% etc... So if this move is an effort to get some consistency around what seems to be a real problem then that is good for everyone.
ReplyDeleteFFM- I ordered the Maggie in Camel and am hoping it comes this week:) Did you get yours yet?
Twiga
Twiga: Congratulations on the Maggie Jacket! I did receive mine last week, and gave a review of it seen Here . I'm considering wearing it tomorrow since the weather is cooling down and the high will be around 65...we are heading out in the early morning, so it will be even cooler, then. :)
ReplyDeleteNote: I do want to mention that I personally think the Camel color of the Maggie is more on the Dark Khaki side.
I too was given the same answer about price matching, not going to happen anymore. I was told by CS that you must use the red phone in-store and they charge shipping on sale items. The Palm Beach Gardens store is where I shop and they are not exactly the friendlist group of gals. I don't even ask them to do that unless it is full-priced merchandise. I wish the stores and online would be consistent in pricing, very frustrating. Now that their system upgrades are concluding, I believe many policies will be affected. Look out for stiffer prices and discounts!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of the Maggie-
ReplyDeleteI posted my review of the black Maggie in the Our Favorite Things post, and I've decided to keep the Regular instead of returning for a Tall.
Why? Well, that night we got a last minute invite to a 'chichi' outdoor wine bar, and I was scrambling to find something to wear. I grabbed my strappy black sandals, my dark wash Sevens, a black cashmere crew, and.....the Maggie! It just pulled it all together, and was so chic. And perfect for sitting outside as it got darker. I love that you can flip back the cuffs to reveal a nice watch or bracelet.
Ok-that'll be my last rave, lol. I just love this jacket.
I placed an order from the red phone from the KOP PA store yesterday, Sunday. CS online honored the additional 40% off the item I was purchasing b/c it was on sale, however, I DID have to pay for shipping b/c it was a sale item. They didnt even waver about it. While I am lucky to have 2 stores pretty close to me, it stinks for those aficionada's who do not.
ReplyDeleteFFM - I am actually considering the Maggie in camel too. I am hoping to wear it as a blazer, as opposed to a coat. I am unsure of whether to get a petite or a regular size. I am short (5'0") and usually have issues with arm lengths. However, I am worried about the jacket being too short. What is your opinion, ffm?
ReplyDeleteWhen I placed a phone order a few days ago for a dress that was one size too big a few days ago, the SA mentioned that if get it tailored, I can send Jcrew the tailoring bill. She seemed to suggest that I can choose the tailor: I just need to call in, then fax them the receipt. This is the first time that I've heard of this, especially since the item was on sale.
ReplyDeleteI too am very disappointed in not being able to price match. I don't live near a store and have done all my shopping via internet and phone. I guess my credit card and bank account will be happier but J Crew is losing valuable customers and business with their inconsistent marketing/pricing. As someone with a marketing/PR degree this is the first rule of keeping happy customers.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I placed a large order when they changed from final sale to fall sale. When my shipment came on Friday, most of the items still had "final sale - no returns" on them and the invoice. I intentionally ordered some things in various sizes/colors to see which fit better. I hope I will not have a problem when I try to return.
I'm fine with it since I'm within walking distance to 3 stores, but I sympathize for others.
ReplyDeleteDanielle - not FFM but I did get the petite and regular maggies and I'm 5'2". Go with the petite, as with the regular the only way the sleeves aren't too long are to roll it back. With petite the sleeve hit at the wrist just right, and you can still roll back if you want bracelet length.
ReplyDeletecool, a color change. Slick & clean white.
ReplyDeleteDanielle: I am 5'4"... the regular jacket hits me at mid hip, and the sleeves are long (as opposed to bracelet length), as described on the website. If you are 5'0", there is a good possibility the regular jacket will be too long in the sleeves, as well as in the body. My personal feeling is that you will indeed need to go with the petite...I'm afraid the regular won't fit you properly. I would suggest that to be sure, you call CS and ask for the exact measurements on both the petite and regular size you would need. The rep should be able to give you sleeve length as well as the length of the jacket, itself. If the information isn't available to the rep online...ask if they will get one from the *mock* store to measure for you. I hope this will help with your decision...please let me know if you have any further questions. :)
ReplyDeleteSorry...the jacket hits me at the hip, not mid-hip. ;)
ReplyDeleteOT: I'm getting my Maggie today!!!! Whoo hooo!!! I'll let you know what I think once I receive it. Based on FFM's review, I think I'll love it. Yeah!
ReplyDeleteI don't live near a store but this is not big news to me...I was told this about 3 weeks ago...you have to be in a store and use a red phone the online CS said...
ReplyDeleteWell, I called the store that had the items that I wanted to order BUT they were out of one of the colors(the one I wanted most)--the store manager called for me using the red phone and placed the order with all the credit card and shipping info. I gave her... This is how you get around this if you find a sales associate or store manager that will understand your plight....I live in another country 6 months out of the year and the US the other 6 months and no store near me...they are all far, far away:) Hope this helps someone:)
Thanks for your insight ffm.
ReplyDeletePS: love your new blog!
I agree that this is frustrating for those of us who can't make it to a store. My nearest one is 2.5 hours away. If they made the online sale promotions to match the store promotions, maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal. As long as they make it consistent for all customers, no matter where you live, I'm happy :)
ReplyDeleteanon @ 11:43: That is what I LOVE about this blog, when people tell how they pair up pieces to make an outfit that looks fabulous! Thank you so much for the ideas, and I am quite sure that you looked awesome!
ReplyDeleteOT - I just received the free shipping email for BOOO, it's valid on $100+ orders, until 11:59 pm 10/29/08
ReplyDeletehttp://ebm.e.jcrew.com/c/tag/hBJBaCMBgTeL6B7WtiG$DcdH4qr/doc.html?RAF_TRACK=&email=lilpeanutmc@vzw.blackberry.net&i_source=0&email=lilpeanutmc@vzw.blackberry.net
I'm glad I found out here instead of being shocked while placing an order.
ReplyDeleteVery disappointed but no surprise as JCrew seems to be taking more away than it is giving lately...
ReplyDeletewhat other retailers do this??? Have different store than online prices?
I mean, I called CA and got my ruffle Astrid for something like $149 and online it is still full price??? Crazy.
Thank you all who post sale prices at stores on this blog. Even with shipping costs it is so much better than shopping online as I don't have a store nearby.
Danielle, you are welcome...I'm always happy to help.. :) I'm also glad you're enjoying my blog! I'll post another new set or two on it later today.
ReplyDeleteOne other thing...I've found that calling a store to use a percentage off and having them ship to me is the way to go...the shipping has only been $6 in my experience, and I think this is a flat rate.
ReplyDeleteThanks jcrewjunkie-
ReplyDeleteHey, for everyone considering Maggie-I'm 5'10" with long limbs and the regular was PERFECT in the arm length. Uncuffed, it sat a bit longer than my wrist bone, and cuffed, bracelet length. The absolute cutest look is 1/2 cuffed with some eye catching wrist jewelry. I hope that gives a good indication of arm length for potential buyers.
Leslie: Can't wait to hear what you think about your Maggie Jacket! :)
ReplyDeleteLeslie: Btw...the Camel Stripe Victoria Shirt looks really pretty with the Camel Maggie, and opera length pearls...that's one of the ways I'll be wearing it. :)
ReplyDeleteanon @12:58: What color of Maggie did you get? Your outfit the other night sounds fab, btw. :)
Hi FFM- I got the black Maggie. I love that I can throw it on and look pulled together, and I also love the mid weight indoor/outdoor versatility. It looked GREAT with jeans.
ReplyDeletemarta-I almost spit coffee all over my computer-LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSeeing all these great reviews of the Maggie makes me really excited to have mine. FFM and all, how heavy would you consider this coat? I live in the Bay Area and winters are generally pretty mild. I ordered what I was hoping would be a good "all-purpose" winter coat but am not liking the cut of the Plaza too much. I think I prefer it when my coats hit no longer than mid-thigh. I know the Maggie is shorter than that, but I think it might still be a good coat to carry me through most of winter, I just wanted to see what everyone else thought. Thank you for any help you can offer!
ReplyDeleteOT: I received an email from the GAP that pants are buy one get one 50% off online & in stores. Applies to mens, womens & maternity.
ReplyDeleteappgal,
ReplyDeleteNot true on the shipping...just called about a week ago and all stores are supposed to be using the same shipping rates as JCrew online...the store manager was going to contact JCrew b/c I told her that I used to get $8 rate from NY stores and she said all stores are supposed to be standarized soon and she was going to call and report the NY and SC stores that are not doing this...
This is somewhat O/T but on topic. I emailed my PS because I tie I ordered was marked down on the website and she did a price adjustment. I've never asked for a price match as I live too far away from a store.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if J.Crew is doing this due to too many customers abusing it.
I only asked for a price match one time in the past 4 years so I know I am not abusing it:) But I bet ther are a lot of people who ask from price matches and I guess JCrew does not want to honor this practice anymore. I don't live near a store but I have always shopped and not worried about price differences...most people probably don't have a clue there is a difference...I never did until this blog...so maybe word has gotten out and too many people now know about it and that is why this new policy is being enforced.
ReplyDeleteI meant to say....ALWAYS SHOPPED ONLINE...
ReplyDeleteOT but very, very interesting. Check out this post over at consumerist.com: http://consumerist.com/5069035/how-to-get-free-shipping-and-15-off-at-j-crew
ReplyDeleteDoes this seem reminscent of anything to anyone? Looks like the J.Crew employee has been making the rounds?
Melanie: The Maggie is considered to be mid-weight wool, and I would definitely call it a Blazer, as opposed to outerwear. I plan to wear it tomorrow when the high temp will be 65. We have mild winters in Florida, so I can see layering a Cashmere sweater underneath the jacket for extra warmth, however...I am able to wear it indoors comfortably now, so I don't personally plan on wearing it as my Winter Coat. I hope to pick up one of the Melanie Double Cloth Coats for that. :)
ReplyDeleteOT: I just received a call from my J. Crew saying that I should receive my rewards card in the next couple days and that they should have their new holiday stuff out by the 2nd week of November. I got a good rewards card this time... meaning I spend way too much last quarter. :)
ReplyDeletejcrew guy in canada: I think your situation is unique, just like your PS. :)
ReplyDeleteOn another note: I think more than likely J.Crew is becoming more strict on their policies because times are tough all around, and they are ALSO feeling the effects of the bad economy. I don't think the changes are from customer abuse. If a good deal is offered or allowed, then why WOULDN'T a customer take advantage of it? J.Crew HAS to have known that from the get go.
Jacq^Yep--you are right!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I was laughing SO hard I was crying when I read that post about the dead animal the girl in the ad is holding--did someone doctor that thing?? I hope so but they did a great job if so!! It is LOL and cry hard funny to me;0) I had to make a comment it was so funny.
jacquelyn and covert5: That HAS to be *Michael* who emailed again...also, WHAT IS SHE HOLDING???
ReplyDeleteOT- is anyone else experience really long wait times for their $ to be returned to their account after mailing an item back? It is driving me crazy!
ReplyDeleteanon @ 2:17: darn! but thanks for the info. guess shopping at j.crew is going to start being a special event for me whenever I'm in the vicinity of one. I just can't justify paying that much for shipping, especially when online customers aren't getting the same sales as in-store.
ReplyDeleteand um...yeah what in the world is the girl in the picture slinging around there? did she just go fox hunting in her j.crew duds? :)
FFM:
ReplyDeleteYou can't tell me that more price matching requests have been going on b/c of this blog...I didn't even know you could do that until I read it here...I am sure that is why the cracking down is going on???
Remember the request to remove the necklace post?
Bet JCrew was getting lots of phone calls and emails...
anon 3:36: I agree, I really think that is the reason why JC has cracked down.
ReplyDeleteAnon @3:26: I definitely think more price matching requests have taken place due to the information shared on this blog, and that it probably DOES plays a big factor in J.Crew enforcing their *previous* policies...I just don't think it's THE factor. Prior to the upgrade it was actually a LOT easier to get a great deal online, but now that the extra 20 or 30% off is a code AND free shipping is a code, it is harder and harder to get the same deals, since we have all now been informed we can't stack codes.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we have to remember that Mickey is NOT about Sale sections and Free Shipping...he thinks the Sale racks devalue a company. Look at the new ad campaign in the previous post where they are trying to make it sound like an $88 dollar cami and $39.50 Tissue Turtlenecks are bargains...the push is to make customers pay full retail, and if they do wait for a sale, it is not as good as it used to be since we aren't offered No Minimum free shipping or allowed to stack codes, and apparently discounts in some cases. I have seen a lot of changes take place since we started discussing the ins and outs of J.Crew months ago, and those changes HAVEN'T been for the better...is it due to those discussions? I think so, but we have also had bloggers come on to comment that we shouldn't think we can make that big of an impact on a large company such as J.Crew...
ReplyDeleteAnyone know if Jcrew will bring out some more new coats? I like the stadium shipley but they don't make the color I want-Camel .
ReplyDeleteFFM: my sister just called me from a Boston J.Crew. I made her hunt down the Victoria for me and give me her opinion! She thinks I've lost it completely!!! Anyway, she said it was gorgeous. It's been sitting in my online shopping cart for a few days now. I'm not sure if I should pull the trigger or wait for a 20% coupon??? I'll probably end up grabbing it, especially with free shipping.
ReplyDeleteSee? I'm the person that continually SLAMMED Michael. I have no shame. He wasn't doing a service to anyone, yet, as we can see, he's running around peddling the same information. When are you all going to learn that people from Team JCrew play for Team Jcrew?
ReplyDeleteLeslie: Have you checked the availability of the Maggie Jackets in your size? I thought they also had another shipment coming in on the 18th, wasn't it? Maybe check the amount available now, and then call CS to see if they expect more in...that way you can decide if you want to wait for the 20% off coupon. You can also get a price adjustment if it's within the 7 days. :)
ReplyDeleteBtw...aren't there 2 Leslies on here?
I wish 20% coupon would come soooon so I can get all these new items!:)
ReplyDeleteAppgal:
ReplyDeleteI got charged whooping $15 to get item shipped from KOP Mall(PA) to Maryland. They matched on-line shipping, nothing I could do.
I think this comes back to the same issue of constistancy. With most retailers, if it is one price online it is the same in the stores. I honestly do not mind special promotions being different. Yet with other retailers the special promotions are actually online vs the stores. For example, Ann Taylor Loft lately has been having such sales as $20 off pants. The website clearly states that it is an online offer only, so there is no confusion. This, however, is a temporary promotion. If J Crew had the same sale prices at either location their would be no such price matching issues.
ReplyDeleteMickey needs to remember when he was just starting out and couldn't afford some basic items and/or wants.....
ReplyDeleteThe majority of the population is about sales and coupon codes and stacking codes...
Just watch JCrew's stock fall and then we will talk:)
I was charged approx. $16 to get an item shipped from CA to IL via FedEX. Was told they use JCrew's online shipping prices too! I about had a heart attack :) but it was still a better deal on my jacket than the online prices....saved $100
ReplyDeleteHi FFM and appgal
ReplyDeleteI just came back to this and was laughing again. Is that SO weird?? They are clapping too! At first I thought it was my imagination and it was like a striped scarf but upon closer examination--it's a fox/coyote or something-LOL!
Holy Chinos, Batman! Their stock is now down around their ankles at the 52 week low. I wouldn't be so sassy with the discounts right about now...you need us more than we need a new saffron colored tissue turtle neck!
ReplyDeleteAnon @4:26: I completely agree...most consumers base purchases on sales, coupons, and code stacking, especially in the current economy...that is why so many of the changes J.Crew has made recently just don't make sense...you would think they would want to OFFER extra incentives instead of removing them...
ReplyDeleteleslie-
ReplyDeleteWAIT--plenty to be had. It's coming soon...I feel it;)
$16/share...that's j.crew stock price. I think they were nicer to us at $52/share. Moody bunch, those j.crew people...don't take it out on your loyal customers!
ReplyDeleteFFM: It's me, Leslie, your email buddy :) in Albuquerque!! I think I'm the only "Leslie" on this blog, however I know there is also a "Lesley" here as well.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting my Maggie in Camel today, but I want to order the Victoria shirt as well. Of course, I just noticed that the black and white stripe is on backorder until Dec. 2nd, so I have them doing a Find It for me. Hopefully, it will materialize. If not, I may just have to wait. Oh well...I must remember....it's just clothing:)
I agree with those that have commented and think I can generalize and make a BROAD statement that EVERYONE in the WORLD would like to see things IDENTICAL between the stores and the site. All stores, all the same. All website items--priced as the stores. They have caused more heartache and pain for their advocates by offering this price here, that sale there, this on sale here but that on promo over there...it is just tiresome trying to stay on top of it all.
ReplyDeleteI actually wonder how they aren't exhausted from working every angle from store level to website, covering each and every store each day--who gets 30% off and which gets 40% off and then this is promo here but not on the site etc. UGh--I am tired just talking about it:(
Leslie: I AM SO SORRY! My boys haven't been sleeping well, which means I haven't either...I was confusing the Victoria and the Maggie...I knew YOU were getting your Maggie today...now I completely understand...you are talking about getting the Camel stripe Victoria shirt, right? As for the Black Stripe...I purchased mine at my B&M last Sunday...what size do you need? I am going there tomorrow. :)
ReplyDeleteHi guys,
ReplyDeleteI actually know where that pic came from--IT IS A DEAD ANIMAL. This was a few years back when j.crew was putting real fur trim on some garments (after mickey took over and was trying to go upscale--previously the company had pledged not to use any real fur). For example, I remember they were selling a hoodie sweatshirt with fox fur trim around the hood. PETA started a campaign against them (see www.jcruel.com) using real j.crew catalog pics but photoshopping in pics of animals that had been killed and skinned for their fur (like from fur farms in China). Finally JC caved and pledged not to use any more real fur, so PETA ended the campaign--if you go to that website you will see how it was resolved. That blog must have found that photo from an old cached page.
FFM: I'm looking for a black stripe Victoria shirt in size 10. If Millenia has it, just put it on hold for me and I will call them and have it shipped. Also, if JC "Finds It" for me before tomorrow, I will email you to let you know. Thanks so much!! What a big help!
ReplyDeleteBelieve me...I know what you mean about multi-tasking with kids...exhausting!!! LOL!
Covert5 - I actually completely disgree with the statements about the website and stores having the same pricing. I am spoiled by living near so many stores and do feel for the consumers who are not that lucky. However, I appreciate that as a company, J Crew needs to make money. The best way for them to continue giving me the products and services I want is to maximize their income. Selling things differently on the web and in the stores works for them. They are not the only company doing so, and we all should remember that this blog is just a microcosm of the J Crew universe. I know we all have very busy lives and sometimes getting things at the best price seems to take more effort than we are willing to give. However, I put that squarely on my shoulders and continue to encourage J Crew to maximize their revenue by selling at the highest price possible. Supply and demand is different in a B&M than online. Why shouldn't prices reflect those differences?
ReplyDeletei was told at two differnt j crews in the dc area that they only price match when you are calling from he red phone in store, and NOT from home. boo.
ReplyDeleteLeslie: I just called Millenia and they only have a size 6 and a size 14 left. I'll still check tomorrow just in case they get a return. :)
ReplyDeleteBtw...the Black Victoria's are waitlisted online, so you can order one, and if the price gets reduced you can call to get the lower price, if you don't mind waiting until December to get your shirt. ;)
Also - Almost all retail stocks are doing poorly. To compare a few and get a little perspective on the current state of the retail market.
ReplyDeleteTalbots - $8
Gap Inc - $5.78
Ann Taylor - $11.74
Limited Brands - $10.18
Saks - $4.96 for retail comparison)
J Crew is farthest off it's 52 week high, but they also have the problems from this summer. As noted in their last market call, they will have to contend with this on their books.
jenn brak...good call on the info!
ReplyDeleteIf you think about it, all these retailers are competing for our Xmas dollars. If JCrew is going to be a big jerk about what they CAN'T do for me, then so be it. I'll just shop somewhere else that will appreciate me.
FFM: Thanks for checking! I'll wait to see if JC finds it for me, and if not, I'll just order one for December shipping. Thanks again!!!
ReplyDeletejenn-brak
ReplyDeleteHmmm...well, you may be on your own with those thoughts.
I do not recollect hearing anything different from the rest of the posters over time but I forgot I should have excluded you in that "speak for everyone" commentary. You do usually have a differing opinion to which you are entitled. Sorry--my bad.
I cannot believe that photo! I had to look at it like ten times, but darned if it isn't some sort of dead fox that model is swinging around with the others around her clapping! It's so shocking I can't imagine why I don't remember having seen it. Did it make the full rounds, or was it pulled quickly?
ReplyDeletecass-thanks for that explanation! Mary--that is a hoot--isn't it?! I mean--only because it was SO unexpected and when I read the comments I LOL!
ReplyDeleteBTW-I am not for swinging around or killing animals!
yeah! I just got my rewards card in todays mail!! Be on the lookout! Good thing I didn't hit the "place order" button before I left the house!LOL!!
ReplyDeleteFFM,
ReplyDeleteIt is very very true. I have been a silent reader of this blog ever since it started. I totally agree with you. I think all the negative promotions like "cannot combine 2 codes", " cannot price match stuff" etc must be as a result of the friendly information sharing in this blog.. Retailers always do statistical analysis on "identifying the shift in the customer profile" and the "lost revenue due to %/# of coupons used etc..." They might even track the sales based on the recent negative promotions "like no price match etc" and see if this deters the customer from buying....
(Btw, I totally applaud Alexis for coming up with the blog and helping all of us is saving some money)
My 2 cents
"Anu with sweaters"
Mary, the anti-fur campaign was in 2005; you may not have heard of it unless you saw a protest outside of a store or are on the email list for an animal protection organization. I am an ASPCA/Humane Society member so I found out about it. :) The point of it was to be shocking--those are PETA's tactics.
ReplyDeleteAs for the uniformity of pricing debate, I am all for JC maximizing shareholder value, but I don't necessary think that always means charging the highest price it can. There is a balance between pushing more sales through discounting or trying to get the highest margin per item (with fewer sales overall). Also, if JC alienates customers with inconsistent policies, it may be dampening brand loyalty, sending customers to competitors and thereby reducing overall customer lifetime value. In the long run, that is bad for shareholders too.
Cass
ReplyDeleteI know PETA uses shock tactics, and holy cow (no pun intended), did it work on me in this case!
I was not aware of the PETA campaign against J.Crew; I never saw any protests and frankly can't remember the use of much fur in their merchandise (I would never buy it myself), although it makes sense in terms of Mickey Drexler's luxury bent. I'm glad PETA was effective in deterring J.Crew from continuing any policies that would hurt animals.
And the pricing policy? I'm all about consistency. If I had a different grading scale for my students depending on where they sat, for example, there'd be hell to pay!
I gave up asking for pm a while ago... After the summer ended... I had noticed it was taking too much of my lifetime. If I see something I want and I'm happy with the price, I'll buy it. If it is too expensive, I'll just pass. I had decided that I was not going to let businesses manipulate my time anymore.
ReplyDeleteAfter I made that decision, I noticed I became a much rational consumer. I was glad I made that decision.
Rene
Off topic, but I have to post here. I'm in love! I finally got a hard to find Bella size 6 Tall from ebay. I got the velvet in Leaf and LOVE it! It's so beautiful. I was also lucky enough to get the wool one in coral! It works great with my hair pulled back, but wondering if anyone with medium length hair (hits just below shoulders) has another way to wear it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLeslie - it's me Elena M in ABQ and I received my rewards card in the mail too today! It is too bad that they expire since I was hoping to not buy anything for a while, but who am I kidding?? BTW, where do your kid(s)go to school? I take my first grade boy to Osuna even though it is quite a drive for us, it is totally worth it :) Hope to see you around and good luck finding your Victoria!
ReplyDeleteI was told be a jcrew employer at 5th ave store in NYC (Cody to be exact - I hate this guy!) last week that the % off in the store is a store-only promotion and CANNOT be matched over red phone. I rolled my eyes, picked up the phone and placed an order for which they matched store prices. Now, who does that? What kind of customer service is that? He absolutely knowingly misinformed me.
ReplyDeleteHey Elena! Congrats on getting your rewards card. I've been trying to cut back on JC as well, but it's really not working. My new tactic is to buy for DH to offset all the stuff I buy for myself! My kids go to Manzano Day...talk about a drive! Luckily there is a bus from the heights.
ReplyDeleteMy new Maggie is coming today. Keep your eyes peeled for me in my Maggie with the Victoria underneath!!! I'm sure we'll run into each other at some point! LOL!
ot (kinda) - how do the rewards come usps or ups???
ReplyDeletethanks!!
For the first time in 4 years I am not getting a JCrew rewards card this period...the new arrivals over the past few months have just not excited me...I have so many clothes (I don't like to part with things that have JCrew on the label:) that it has to really grab me...
ReplyDeleteanon at 7:26pm: The reward card come via usps.
ReplyDeletejenn_brak - as usual RIGHT ON TRACK. Please - feel free to speak for me ANYTIME.
ReplyDeleteIf you take a sec and google this issue you can see it's not just J.Crew that has online and B&Ms as separate parts of business within their companies.
The Gap, Banana Republic and more have had similar policies. Understandably it can be frustrating for customers that don't understand how the businesses are set up. Perhaps these companies could do a better job at explaining this. It used to really annoy me before I worked in Retail and got to understand the business better.
Stores are generally responsible for the inventory they choose to order for their stores. The online/direct is often a separate business directive and is handled accordingly. Even though the two share the same goal of making profit for their company, the pricing structures are not always directly related.
Here's a link to a similar discussion regarding stores vs online. http://breakingcurfew.blogspot.com/2008/07/mind-gap.html
Thanks again for your insight Jen. Retail stocks are down industry-wide and that was an excellent point.
Mayfair mall store in Milwaukee, WI has a lot of the B&W Victoria's. All SA's there are SUPER:)
ReplyDeleteAt least stores like J.Crew embrace having an e-commerce website. I think it's a very poor business decision that many of the box department stores (Macy's, Bloomingdales, Saks, etc.)represent under 50% of their in-store stock online. That said, I 100% agree that in-store and online prices should be the same.
ReplyDeleteIt's odd that J. Crew's prices are higher online, while others have lower prices online. I just bought a blazer from BR - $39.99 online (before three promotions) vs $89.99 in-store. BIG difference in favor of the web.
ReplyDeleteARGH! I just got the penelope mary janes I ordered--very pretty out of the box, but as soon as I put one on my foot the strap pops off! I.e. it tore right out of the stitching to the side of the shoe--and I don't even have wide feet! Now I have to make yet another trip to return defective merchandise. Sorry, just needed to vent--and warn you guys not to get this style!!!
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe it, the site is down yet again!! Right in the middle of my order. If anything, they should be giving a discount for web shoppers for all the frustration we endure with their pathetic web site.

ReplyDeleteMichelle Obama shops at j.crew. I wonder if they hassle the hell out of her?
Personally, I wouldn't wear what she's wearing...but to each their own I guess.
It looks like Obama's Honey, honeyglazed herself to oblivion. I think she should use a Personal Shopper to help her out in the color department!!

Then, I saw my news lady wearing the bumblebee necklace. Hilarious. All in one sitting. I must be going nuts...haha.
ReplyDeletejenn brak - would you be singing the same tune if you didn't live near so many stores?
ReplyDeleteAn extra 30 or 40% off adds up to a lot in savings and it is unfortunate that online shoppers don't get the same benefits as those who live near b&ms.
Wahhhh. Then MOVE. Geezus. You do have a choice.
ReplyDeleteJenn Brak: Excellent point. J. Crew is a business and as such they are in the business of making money ( and great clothes!)I want them to make a profit so that they can continue their longstanding success.
ReplyDeleteIf that means I have to pay full price for the things I really want, then I will pay full price. It may also mean that some of the things I might really want I can't afford.
Jcrew site is down (again) =(
ReplyDeleteBR just added new stuff to their sale section. I used the code HOTJOBS and got 20% off $100 plus free shipping since I have their credit card =)
I think the main thing about price matching is that the policy needs to be consistent. Some CS will price match if you mention the store promotion, others will say no and then there are others who will call the store to verify the discount.
ReplyDeleteanon- that's because jcrew is retarded. much like their disconnect w/pricing, price matching and sales...
ReplyDeleteMaybe the site is down because they're adding new stuff to the sale section. A girl can dream right =)
ReplyDeleteOk- first of all I looked at the consumerist picture and I laughed so hard I cried!! I realize it was PETA protest picture, but it struck me as downright whacky! I can understand why J Crew doesn't carry fur now!
ReplyDeleteAnyway- I have found that the b&m stores have better percentage off sale, but I often find that items that are on sale on the website are not on sale at the store. I ask the b&m store to price match the site all the time!
One example is the dream open cardigan: It was on sale on the website for $99.99. The store had it at regular price. The store had 40% off sale. I asked the sales girl to check the price of the cardigan and she said "There is no way its on sale. We just got that in." I called on the red phone and got 40% off the sale price- which is 1/2 the regular price of $140 - $59.99. If I had not been a website customer I would have never known. What makes me mad is that the store sill had the cardigan for FULL price the next time I visited the store. I felt sorry for the poor people who got charged full price!!
Its the pricing inconsistency that is upsetting. I always look at the website before I purchase at a b&m. I think they should price match stores, website, red phone, whatever. If I've done the research to find a better price, then give it to me! Otherwise, you'll loose my sale becuase I know another customer got a better deal.
sill = still
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 9:17. I certainly hope I would.
ReplyDeleteReally, Rene @ 6:33 said it best. I try to buy based on perceived value to me ( I am a HUGE believer in figuring CPW before making a purchase). Sometimes things are worth full price to me, sometimes not. Of course, I am somewhat envious when hearing that someone got the same thing as me for a lesser price. However, it does not make me mad at J. Crew. I would not have bought an item unless I thought it was worth what I paid.
^ different schools of thought make the retail world go round as well. If we all could afford full price--there would never need to be a sale but because that is not possible--there will ALWAYS be sales. I brought the whole topic up to say that the rules should be consistent and that to me means things should be priced the same.
ReplyDeleteI have the exact sweater crewbie is talking about and because I am an educated consumer, I got it for the same price. In fact, I have a J Crew degree at this point--I refuse to pay full price because I DON'T HAVE TO! Sorry J Crew but that's how it is--you made your bed and now you have to lay in it. You cannot easily undue what you have done.
I along with others ask for consistency--I know my store will match online and vice versa but why do i have to do this??
Regarding sales--there is nothing important enough that I feel I cannot wait for a sale--it's just that simple.
cass-6:01pm well-put
crewbie--I totally agree with that thought. My store still has the carrot Dream Open Cardi FULL PRICE--that feels SO WRONG to me! That thing has been on sale online for say 2 months?? Then again, I can tell they still have a ton too--they never dwindle. Priced too high to start--people will buy them later on sale:)

ReplyDeleteJust got my rewards card. Yippee! It's more visible and useful reward than my other dubious credit card with dubious airline (who may and can go bankrupt) miles.
ReplyDeleteWell, as in most cases, knowledge is power. Having the collective wisdom in this blog definitely helps. I didn't know that I can do the matching price from a red phone before I read this blog.
Is Mickey contributing to the Obama campaign. Mrs. O is certainly giving J Crew some free advertisement!
Cass - I expect to receive the penelope mary janes tomorrow. What color did you get?
ReplyDeleteI agree with, I believe it was Covert5, who said...if it's not on sale it's not worth it...or something like that......I refuse to pay full price...I watched two sweaters sell out in my size and color but I thought...Who cares? There are always new things each month...I am just not willing to pay $250 for a blazer even with a little educator discount...I can afford it but I chose not to pay full price for something that is so marked up to begin with....
ReplyDeleteI honestly didn't even think we could call CS to apply store discount on our purchases. I thought it could only be applied from the red phone in stores.
ReplyDeleteGigi--I got the gold/blue ones, but I imagine the construction is the same on all of them. Be really careful putting them on your feet!
ReplyDeleteCass - I thought all 3 options were pretty. I tried on the black/silver in the store. I assume it had been tried on by many and it was holding up just fine but I'll keep your warning in mind. I got the yellow/gold or yellow/silver. I missed UPS so I'll pick it up tomorrow.
