Up to 25% Off on J.Crew's Outerwear

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Tiffany Rose (in this post), as well as Irina, who shared the following promotion with us.

J.Crew is offering up to 25% off on {select} outerwear for women (click here), men (click here) and kids (click here). This offer expires Sunday, October 7, 2012. The fine print includes:
*Prices as marked. Offer valid on select women's, men's, boys' and girls' outerwear only. Offer cannot be redeemed for cash or applied to previous purchases. Offer valid at jcrew.com only. Offer is not valid at J.Crew retail stores, J.Crew Factory stores or on J.Crew Factory items. Offer valid through Sunday, October 7, 2012, 11:59pm ET. Offer not valid on phone orders. Terms of offer are subject to change at any time.
This is a pretty nice offer for those of you needing a new Winter coat (or two!) There is plenty of stock available.

Also, if you have already tried on a piece of outerwear, do you mind sharing your review? This might help other JCAs decide which items to try (or which ones to avoid!)

My personal pick is the Excursion Quilted Vest in Herringbone (Item 93111; $138.00) that is currently on sale for $103.50. I purchased this great vest (as well as the solid ivory version) when it was on sale (25% off) in stores last week.

It is a beautiful piece! The contrast piping and gold hardware are nice touches. I know some JCAs are not fans of the printed herringbone graphic, but I actually found it lovely. I also think it will make it easier to clean.

As for sizing... I own the Excursion Quilted Vest version from last year and found the size XS fit me best then. For whatever reason, this year's version of the vest fits me better in the size XXS. The chest is a tiny bit snugger, but the body looks much better on me. So it might be best to try this on or call for measurements, to make sure you order the right size.

Lastly, this vest (in all its forms) must be selling well, because I notice that my stores are only carrying a few sizes now (instead of the full range).

What are your thoughts on this latest promotion? Are there are pieces you are interested in getting? Have you already tried on a piece of outerwear? If so, please share with us your review!

    1. Ina, I am 5' 2" and a size 2 in perfect shirts, and I take a P4 in the peacoat. I would think you'd be a P2. HTH!

    2. do you t hink i could takre the size 2,since i have a long torso and short legs?
Or do you think the arms would be too long?

    3. Ina, I tried the Tipped Peacoat here in regular size. There is also a link to the Majesty Peacoat there. I would very likely order the Petite since the sleeves on the regular are long.

      Delete
    4. Hi Ina, before I purchased the wool trench, I actually had both the regular and petite peacoat shipped to me as at 5'2"/ 156 cm with short arms JC sleeve lengths are often a problem for me. I would say you want the petite size if this is an issue for you, but it does make it shorter in the coat length shoulder to hip as well. I normally wear P2 in JC coats to allow for Canadian layering, regular 0 or this fall even a 00 in shirts. If you email contactus address they should be able to provide sleeve and length measurements for both which you can compare to your frame. They were every helpful in avoiding more shipping charges before I finally purchased.

      Delete
    5. N.B. Sleeve length measurements are not shoulder to cuff, but midpoint of back to end of sleeve.

  2. I ordered the wool-cashmere icon trench in Cabernet. I was able to apply a 20% coupon code ontop of the promo price, so $195 all in. I totally guessed on sizing- I am usually a 00 or 0 and took the 00 bc 0 was sold out in that color. Hoping it is as lovely on as it appears on the site!

    3. Yes, you're only able to apply one promo code per order. The outerwear prices are already discounted so no promo is required to get the reduced-pricing on coats. At the checkout you can apply the promo code for an additional 20%.

    1. I just tried it in store. In my opinion it runs big, I was swimming in the 2 which is my regular coat size, so I wouldn't size up for sure. The stadium-cloth fabric is very plush in this coat (maybe it's the light color) and seems very warm but I felt like a bumble-bee, it was too much yellow for me! I have pics but won't be able to put them up until tonight. HTH!

      Delete
    2. Thanks Ema - looking forward to your review! I was eyeing the yellow colour as well but now I am a little worried as you said it was too much. Did you get to see the sandstone colour as well? That was my next colour choice after yellow.

    1. xoxo, the red would look great on you since you are a blonde. The gold extras are too small to count as bling. ;)

      Delete
    2. xoxo, just a second opinion but I saw the snowcap in person at Eaton Centre store yesterday and I was bugged by the zips. They seemed even slightly "bling-ier" than the snaps on the field jacket. But it could have just been the lighting or the combination with the quilting and the slight lustre of the fabric, which I did like. And I am not much of one for shiny hardware re. bags, jacket buttons etc.

  7. Lady day coat is fitting true to size this year, but buyer beware on color! I loved the vintage berry shade I saw on my screen and in my catalogue but the one I got is really a dark fuchsia. Fine, if that's what you want, but I thought it was more of a medium to deep pink, and unfortunately, this color is far too --- for lack of a better word--- sharp for me to pair with my existing scarves and bags on a regular daily basis. It is pretty on its own, for sure, but definitely a winter shade at home IRL. And I kind of liked the thought that this would be bit lighter or brighter than it was. I was going to exchange for the antique white to replace my badly worn winter white coat, but now with the outerwear sale it's the same price, so it makes it easier for me to straight return it to a b and m, and order myself a new antique white at the same discount as last weeks promo.

  14. Agree with silver lining. Prices will go much lower esp if the weather is still warm where you live--wait. If you really NEED a coat then, yeah, go for it but really how many coats- or vests- for that matter does one person really need? I know I am set for a long while. My "old" JCrew coats last for many years and I find I only occasionally wear my vests.

Does anyone have the Stadium-cloth coat and how does it compare to warmth with the coats that have the thinsulate? Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lisa, I've found my stadium cloth Boulevard Trench to be much warmer than my Thinsulate-lined Coletta double-cloth coat. The wind goes right through the Coletta, and the sleeves don't have Thinsulate, which makes it even worse. To top it off, it's much heavier!

  19. I'm happy to have this promo so early in the season. It is still too warm here to be thinking about coats but I tried the tipped peacoat and the popover peacoat and liked them both. Not sure if I'll order, but one will be on my holiday list.

  20. Looking for a puffer has anyone compared the retail version to the factory wondering how warm both are

    ReplyDelete
  21. This probably belongs in the "love" thread but thought I'd put it here due to the promo - I have several of the Double Cloth Lady and Metro Coats from the past 4 years. All have held up beautifully. All have the thinsulate, which is essential for MN winters but doesn't add bulk. These coats are just spectacular. Prices may go lower but the high temp is 45 degrees here today so the promo comes at a good time for those of us in the north. I'm quite tempted to add the Golden Sun color to my collection :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I purchased the Snowcap Quilted jacket in authentic red with the cardholder promo last month. I love it. It is defintely a jacket, not a winter coat, but I will get lots of wear out of it this fall. The fit is slim, but still TTS. I found that I didn't get that much extra room or length in the body if I sized up, and then the sleeves and shoulders were too big. The jacket hits me right below the hip, so if you have a longer torso, it might be cropped. I personally like the gold zippers and pulls, it adds a little personality to the jacket. The stand collar stays where it is, you can't really make it lay down, so if bulk around you neck bothers you, this may not be the right jacket for you.

It's finally cool enough here to wear, so I'm wearing it tonight to a football game...GO UTES!

  23. I just returned the cabernet icon trench in wool yesterday - I'm petite, at 5, 2.5" and it was just too much coat and too much cabernet (which is a colour that normally complements my skin). Predictably, the wool was beautiful but not with the sheen that's in the stock photo. Hope that helps someone.

    Also:
If anyone can spare a 20% off code, I'd be ever so grateful! I'm shopping for a coat that I can wear through my last 4 months of pregnancy and beyond and I'm thinking a cocoon shape might suit me well! But the price points are still quite high.

    Many thanks in advance!

  24. Good review, Alexis. I love the tipping on the excursion, but wasn't a fan of the print. I don't mind that the fabric is printed. It's the way that digital prints look when they're masquerading as random. The pattern isn't random. Review in this post. All that said, I'm likely keeping it. lol

  27. Just got my herringbone Excursion vest in the mail today and it's definitely a keeper! Like many others, I was concerned about the digital print and was still unsure when I opened the package, but once I tried it on and checked myself out in the mirror, I was sold on it. It looks better on the body than it does on the hanger. Size-wise, I took my usual M and it fits snug in the bust and loose in the waist, so if you aren't busty like I am then you could definitely size down.

    2. I thought about that too but I need to wear something beginning next month, not to mention I can't ascertain if my size color will be left, so I went for it anyway though I'm sure there wil be a better deal for those who don't need anything new until later and are more flexible on colors, perhaps. Even with the promo this still hits my credit card like a full price coat elsewhere.

  31. Alexis thanks for the review. Now, I'm intrigued by the vest. I nromally am a 4 in perfect shirts and schoolboys. What size would you advise I get? I don't trust online help anymore. Last time I called for measurements, I was given completely wrong ones and had to send the item back. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am guessing that a 4 in perfect shirts means you could be either an XS or S?

I am normally a size 0/2 in perfect shirts and a size XS for everything else. I am not an XXS, however for this vest I was. I am a 34B for reference too.

I think if you are not big chested (like myself), you should consider sizing down from your normal size (of XS, S, M, L). But if you are bigger chested, then you might want to stick to your normal size.

  34. Help, I just received the cocoon coat in the mail and tried on. It is really big. I am always a 4 on JCrew coats. I have a lady day, a majesty pea and the stadium cloth engineer coat (or something like that). This 4 has long arms and is very very wide through the body. I know that it is supposed to be cut a little wide (hence the cocoon), but this is just too big.

Question - is it fitting TTS for everyone else? This could be a quality control problem and I don't want to order a 2 to find it tiny! Thanks

PS why did they totally sew the pockets closed? Is this right??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi katie! You're not alone. I received this coat earlier today, and it's going back to the store. The coat fits great in the back, but the front fits me weirdly. The arms were okay on me, but I just wasn't wowed by the coat IRL. HTH!

      Delete
    2. The pockets are likely just basted closed so they will not sag and affect the shape of the coat or pockets during shipping and sale. You should be able to pull out the thread using a seam ripper or manicure scissor to cut one stitch and the rest will come out easily by pulling. Don't remove the basting if you're going to return the coat though, keep the it intact to preserve the shape of the coat for the next person. Once you're ready to wear it you can remove it and use the pockets.

      HTH

    3. Thanks to both of you. I returned it today and my BandM had just gotten a new shipment of them in. I tried on the 2 and it fit and looked beautiful. The SA said they are cut big. I was so excited about it, I forgot all about the pockets, but will take your advice xoxo. Thanks again!
