ReplyDeleteI was wondering about sizing on the Majesty Peacoat. I have last year's Lady Day in a size 10. (I'm generally an 8 in blazers.) It fits well with a sweater underneath, but no room for a jacket or blazer. From reading reviews, it seems like the Majesty is a little roomier than the Lady Day. If I wanted to be able to wear it over a blazer, does it seem like a 10 might work, or would it be better to try a 12?

DeleteI agree with Executive Knitter. I am usually a size 4-6 in Jcrew jackets. I usually go with a 6 because I have broad shoulders and long arms. I found the 4 fit perfectly and would definitely be fine with a sweater underneath.

I received my capris today and they are the Fall 2012 run of capris. For some reason I thought they would be the 2011 version since they were on the website last spring. I only note this because I found this year's cafe capris to fit a bit smaller than last year's so I really hope they fit. They are a nice dark shade of navy though.
DeleteI received Facotry wool pencil skirt in fiesta purple and boatneck paisley blouse. I love the skirt! Wool is typical factory wool but fit/length is so much better for me than Regular pencil skirt.

I'm actually wearing that blouse today! I love it - wearing it with black Minnies and a green Hacking - definitely think the print is a bit much when it isn't covered up, but it's cute (though polyester!).

ReplyDeleteI am usually a size 8.5 in JC shoes, and I order the satin Everyly T-strap pumps in the bright fuchsia, and I found they were too small. I have a normal to wide foot, but the problem was not in the width. The shoe felt too short, and my toes were scrunched. I couldn't walk in them much, because of the fit, but they felt comfortable otherwise for a shoe of that height. I reordered for a size 9.
DeleteKitty witty~I just received the suede everly's in vivid lime, my normal size is 8 1/2 but I needed to size up in the Mona's & Pia's so I ordered the 9 in these as well & glad I did! The toe area is narrow & I have a narrow to medium foot. Super comfy, love them! Hope this helps!

DeleteTie top in navy tweed: This was a little boxier than I was expecting. I also was not expecting it to be as shiny as it was (even though the description does mention tinsel-like thread woven throughout). That said, this looks like a well-made top. I tried it on with sweatpants last night (ha) so the overall look wasn't there for me; I'll try it on with skirts, etc later to get a better feel for it. It did seem to be a tad itchy during the time I had it on. Not so much that I wanted to get it off quickly, but enough that I noticed.

The factory schoolboy, which is not online, is awesome. It comes in camel, which the retail does not, and it is the perfect shade of camel. I sized up one from my usual jacket size and it fit perfectly. I am tall and generally dislike the schoolboy blazer, but the factory verion is perfection. It is not short and boxy. It really made me look like I had a nice defined waist even with the jacket left open. Highly recommend.
ReplyDeleteI have the Factory Schoolboy from last year in navy and I totally agree, I like it much better than the retail version I have in caramel. It is less boxy and the sleeves are less roomy (which I prefer). I'm tall as well, so I wonder if that has something to do with why I like it so much?
DeleteI got the Navy one a few years ago (SP 10, maybe?) and it has just not held up well. However, I did get one last year (a professor blazer or something?) that has held up wonderfully and seems to be much higher quality. Interesting.
DeleteEveryone ahould have an Emmaleigh dress in their closet. Seriously, it fits like a dream and is a great basic. I just got the poppy one and have worn it twice. Unexpectedly, they look great with rooftop red Valentina's.

Emmaleigh dress has a high waist and it doesn't fit me. I would suggest for those who cannot wear this dress to get the Origami dress. I have the one in red and love it.

ReplyDeleteThe Ludlow blazer in Italian tweed is killer. The colour is a warm olive with slight fleeks of navy seen in when you get close up. Fit is spot on as with all Ludlows; fitted not fit. Just need to shorten the cuffs ever so slightly which is usual with a jacket for me.
The tonal oxford is crazy nice in blue and the fabric reads almost like a washed denim. The usual great fit too. And now the shirt is sold out and it's a new arrival; happy to see it hanging in my closet.
Time for me to push away from the table for a bit.

ReplyDeleteDecided with the help of a friend to keep this year's Wintress puffer after all. After washing my 2008 version - which came out beautifully, so many thanks ladies for the tip! - we discovered it still looked a bit weathered and snow stained and I was truly due for a new one. What I disliked at first about this year's was the bright gold snaps versus the black snaps on my old coat, but I've decided I can learn to accept them and besides, the styling of the hood this year and the way the coat snaps around your neck for added warmth will be great for me since I'm perpetually freezing. Plus I got it for under $200, and for a warm winter coat, that's a very reasonable price in my book.
ReplyDeleteI'm STILL undecided about the quilted excursion vest in herringbone... has anyone else tried this item? I kinda hate the print, love the tipping, and love the feel of it but wish it fit a big more snug. My friend asked if I could size down (it's an XXS so the answer was no). I can't deal with vanity sizing! I'd much rather have a size that fits me than take pleasure in knowing the label inside my clothing reads size XXXS, which is apparently what I need! All vanity sizing does is ensure that a lot of customers are going to order the wrong sizes and be unhappy, and a lot of returns are going to come your way. I don't get it.
Dara - I have exact, exact same sentiments about the quilted excursion vest. I don't like the digital print. I wasn't expecting it to have texture in any way, though. The digital aspect makes it just a little off because the imperfectness they added to it repeats in a perfect way, if that makes sense. I felt my usual size S is the right fit, but it *does* just feel a little too loose in that area. I haven't tried on my thickest sweater with it, though. One thing that is keeping it in my closet is the lady in pic 8 on What 2 Wear With. The vest looks soooo cute belted. If it looks good belted, I think I shall keep it once as for all. Just need an undivided moment to test it out.

DeleteCan someone please help me with the toothpicks in golden sunflower? I ordered them in my normal size and they are at least an inch bigger everywhere compared with my byzantine blue jeans. I ordered a size smaller also and those were too tight! Is it just this particular pair?

ReplyDeleteI love the convertible clutch but I'd love to see an expanded choice of colors. As for the Factory sweaters, the cardigans were fine and the colors nice but the V-necks were darker colors IRL and seemed really flimsy, there were even a couple of spots that looked ready to form holes.
Anyone have a review of the icon trench in wool-cashmere in cabernet? I’m curious of the color in person and the body porportions (if that makes sense). I’m usually a peacoat type of gal…but dang it..I’ve fallen in love with this one.

Just received the polka dot sequin tee (not yet online) I ordered both small and medium. I was swimming in the medium (surprising because I took a medium in the zigzag sequin tee and it fits me nicely). The small fit well and was not too tight. Hope this helps someone! Kittywitty, I have the Everly printed T-straps - if you are on the fence I would size up half a size. I did, so I could wear with tights. I think they are gorgeous and are comfortable. I didn't try the suede style.

I want to give a big thanks to JCrewJD! She recommended the factory suiting and I agree - it's lovely! Got the pants for about $48, skirt for $35ish and blazer for $88. All the pieces are 100% wool - pretty lightweight - lined w/acetate. Fit great! I think I can get away w/wearing it year round, except maybe the coldest days in winter. Highly recommend!

Tippis were on sale for $45 in kelly green, pale pink, and turquoise pool. They had tons of them . I tried the XS and the drape was really nice. The shoulders fit decently and the body, while way too slouchy, looked fine when tucked into a skirt.
I think this season's tippis are cut smaller than last season's. And the wool was not itchy (which is a big deal because my skin is sensitive). The neckline was what kept me from red phoning an XXS. The neckline is just too casual for me - I think it works fine for the striped ones but for the regular crewnecks, I wish they would do something more delicate. Wish they would do a ballet neck or boatneck tippi. The colors are TDF though.
I also tried the matchstick jeans in 25R. I did not like the fit. My figure is already boyish and the jeans eliminated the few curves I actually do have. They fit me like my toddler's jeans fit him. The rear was particular unflattering.
Sale section was robust and nicely organized. Lots of black Mona pumps for $69.99. I should pop in more often on Tuesdays.
By the way, there is a very stylish SA there (Becky?) that others have mentioned. She was there today, rocking the silk foulard pants (capris?), a neon pink slouchy vneck, bright patent flats (orange) and an chunky orange necklace. She looked amazing, as usual. She actually made me reconsider the tippi for a minute.
I would love to know your comments on the quality of J Crew's cashmere. Generally, the view on this blog seems negative, but out on the Web I see mixed reviews. Admittedly, I see no rave reviews either out on the Web.

I have both a horror story and a rave review! J.Crew cashmere nowadays is hit or miss; you just have to accept this, and know what to look for.
DeleteOne of my favorite sweaters from any price point is my Cashmere Long Sleeve Tee from 1-2 years ago, in the dusty mauve color. I scored it for $40(!) in the store after promos, and it's never pilled at all, even on the hip where my heavy shoulder bags rub. Much nicer than my cashmere cables. It's knit brilliantly--some kind of flat weave or similar that doesn't lose shape, and is blissfully thick and opaque without being bulky. Somehow, from the day I got it, it had a handfeel like of good Scottish cashmere that's been owned for a while--distinctively sturdy, but with a softness that's just starting to come out from washes/wears. I've handwashed 1-2x/year in Laundress cashmere shampoo, but otherwise not babied it at all. E.g., this is the one you take camping. It's MAGIC... I imagine this must be what the old "glory days" J.Crew cashmere must have all been like. Google suggests this gem has been rebranded--and price hiked--as the Collection Cashmere Tee. I haven't examined this latest iteration, but the styling, gauge, and weave seem identical, so I can't imagine it would be too far off. If it really is true to my old mauve sweater, I'd say it's definitely worth the full price. But if you're not sure, just be safe and wait for the sale. :)
Way on the other end of the quality spectrum is a terrible J.Crew summerweight cashmere tunic, purchased 4-5 years ago (before I knew what to look for, sigh...). 14-gauge, cream-colored (or maybe once upon a time it was white, I can't remember--that's how bad). Unevenly translucent, elbows stretched out, underarms and hips rolled and pilled, midsection got holes just from being worn with a belt (a J Crew belt at that!), discolored... ugh. Gentle washing, lint shavers, combs did nothing for it. It's too scrappy to be given away or donated, and too cashmere for me to just throw it out. What a closet gremlin.
Generally, if something's too soft to be true (super fuzzy or angora-like, with long "furry" bits and a high pile) it will pill, because that's just a factor of the softness. Pieces that seem more like merino wool or lambswool (less soft, but durable, thick, and holds structure), will do as expected and age well with little or no pilling. As a rule, among the same sweaters, lighter and more saturated colors are usually less durable, because the fibers take a beating during the (pre-)dying process. (Except if they're "undyed wool"--often a wheaty, marled color that I like a lot.) Gauge can also be a factor, though it's tricky, and by itself non-determinative.
TL;DR--avoid the "summerweight" stuff, score home runs on pieces you can inspect in person, and if you want durability, look for tight weaves with thicker gauges. There are exceptions to every rule, but this is a good place to begin. (And ignore all those dry-clean-only tags because nothing fries your cashmere, good or bad, soft or not, like a big bath of perchlorate.)

DeleteI love J.Crew cashmere for the fits and colors. The quality is OK, but it will pill. I have had a few J.Crew cashmere sweaters that pilled horribly and some that barely pill at all. I would NEVER pay even close to full price for it... I have never paid more than $60-$80 for J.Crew cashmere and I am happy with it at that price. But if you pay full price or close to it, you may be disappointed.
ReplyDeleteITA. Colors, cut and style are why I purchase. The quality is ok, but I never pay FP or even near it. I would not pay over $100 (and that is really for the specialty sweaters...those with thicker gauge knits, unique styles, etc). The basics--tees, cardigans, can usually be had for around 60-80 with sale plus extra % off.
DeleteDefinitely buy a sweater stone or sweater comb (I recommend the stone sold on amazon for around $5). They help gently remove pills and really can save a sweater. I also gently hand wash my cashmere with baby shampoo in cold water. Don't twist or wring dry, instead roll up in a clean towel and squeeze. Dry flat and iron on low. Dry cleaning solvents are damaging to the delicate fibers. I think this has really kept my sweaters looking nice. HTH!

DeleteUnknown: These days retailers try to tell us that all cashmere pills. But I had a J Crew cashmere sweater bought in 1998 that never pilled during the 10+ years I had it. The JC cashmere I bought more recently, however, was all subject to various degrees of pilling.
DeleteI had a few BR cashmere sweaters from the late 90's that also held up beautifully after many years of wearing, without pilling. But I guess the good old days are gone.
In my more recent experience with J.Crew cashmere, you're pretty safe with the 12-gauge knit or lower. If the number is higher, like the 14-gauge Featherweight cashmere, it pills like crazy. I usually only buy cashmere on sale or with a promo, but I have bought one or two sweaters at full price if I fell in love with the color (or if I needed a black sweater, which never seem to be on sale). Most of my J.Crew cashmere sweaters have shown some mild pilling in high-friction spots, but it doesn't annoy me enough to stop buying them. I haven't yet found another company who makes a cashmere sweater that fits me better than J.Crew's Long-Sleeve Tee.

DeleteI bought this fall's cashmere cardigan in frosted spruce but have yet to wear it but it feels thicker than last year's cashmere cardigans did. I got it for $112US on my last trip to NY when they were running the sweater/cashmere promo and I got an additional store discount on top of that. The salesperson mentioned they seem to be of better quality this season.

ReplyDeleteHi Christy. In my opinion, the loose fit of the bottom band is standard for the lady lace popover. I purchased mine online retail from Jcrew last winter and mine hangs loose as well.

DeleteSomeone somewhere asked about the velvet Schoolboys. I purchased one during the 25% off excitement and it arrived today.
ReplyDeleteI am disappointed and the jacket is going back.
For starters, I should say that in general, I haven't found the Schoolboys to be a good fit for me unless they are made out of wool. The pink herringbone, for example, is lovely. I think the material is wonderful--so much better than the plain wool colors available now (caramel--I'm looking at you).
I bought the green velvet Schoolboy. And the thing is, if it talks like a Schoolboy and quacks like a Schoolboy, it ought to be a Schoolboy. But it isn't.
The green color on line is gorgeous-deep, mysterious green that speaks of alpine forests covered in snow in the deep of winter and the holidays wherein you need a candle to see through a Swiss cabin where the electricity has failed and you are trying to work your way over to the wine/punch/bowl thing. . . okay. Okay. So I had high expectations.
But I didn't expect the color to be so *wildly* different. I didn't expect the green on the actual coat to resemble decrepit Mr. C---- from high school, who nearly daily wore a green felt jacket that brought to mind a pool table. This is what my mind's eye saw when I pulled the J Crew velvet Schoolboy out of its (very nice) packaging. I didn't want to picture old Mr. C (god rest his soul). I wanted the romance of laced up high heel black boots and maybe some sort of ruffled black skirt. Or some leather. Instead . . . felt. Mr. C and his dandruff.
The buttons--plastic. The fit--boxy. Boxier, for me, than the wool (shoutout to the herringbone, again, which I loved).
Needless to say, this has dampened my enthusiasm for any other Schoolboy.
I did receive the white eyelet SB on popback. It was final sale. It's fine and fits and will do its job next summer.

The hot pink houndstooth in particular is calling me. I have bought from Ness before. I am usually 2 in J Crew, and an 8 in Ness, just so you know. I dare J Crew to make a beautiful wool blazer like the ones on Ness . . .
I'm also crushing hard on the button up shirt with the deer, one of Scotland's symbols.

I agree with our review. I ordered the navy so I cannot comment on the color (but I had high expectations as well and was disappointed, it is a pretty dull navy with no jewel undertones) and I find the fit boxier than the wool flannel one. Plus I didn't like the pocket placement at all
DeleteTo each her own, my boulevard green really looks like the same color as displayed on my iPad screen, and I think it's lovely. It's deep green but withe more of a teal undertone vs. forest, but it's definitely green not teal, so don't misunderstand me if anyone is considering. I think it looks phenomenal with the herringbone pink skirt, a pair of dark jeans, or anything medium purple below, not to mention of course, anything black, so it's a keeper for me. I bought a petite size, and in Petites I don't feel the fit is noticeably different from the herringbone wool although I think the thickness of the fabric in velvet gives it a slightly different silhouette. I have this in a purple color from last year I guess? Anyway, I think they fit about the same.
DeleteAgreed, I ordered the green and love it. It's very soft and plush, I will be having a tuck made at the back of the neck, which will take some of the boxiness out of tithe shoulders and underarms. Looking forward to wearing it with dark jeans, silk blouses,,,,

ReplyDeleteWas in my B&m today late this afternoon and they were doing markdowns. Didn't get to see the prices but if there is something you have your eye on you may want to call or go in to check. The sequin tank in burgundy/navy, some random tshirts, what I think was the honeycomb cardigan. I picked up the houndstooth sweatshirt that they were marking down to $39.99. So cute with an ivory blouse underneath to make it work appropriate. The prices weren't even in the computer yet so it had to be manually adjusted at the register. Sorry no more price info but I'm not nearly as good as Gigi at getting all the details.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have any thoughts on the Nightshirt in end-on-end cotton? I've been wanting a nice soft nightshirt but am not sure if I'm willing to pay that much. Is this one of those things that's totally worth it and I'll have for many years?

I have the striped version and while it isn't scratchy or anything, "soft" is not what comes to mind. It is more or less like a man's shirt. If you want something cozy I would go with the flannel one. I believe factory used to have a flannel one too last winter if you want to wait.

ReplyDeleteThe colors are really nice, it feels soft but kind of thin, lighter weight... layering type of throw on sweater. I like the ribbing on the sleeves but not too big of a fan of the crew neck...although it is a casual sweater.Because the blend feels cashmere like ...the neck makes it look less lux.
The tag says 55% wool 30% nylon 15% cashmere. I tried the pilling test...it didn't pill ? they fit tts ...will they stretch out after wearing ? If I can decide what color to keep I will give it a go...I ordered the saddle(nice camel color) the light pink (not blush but a nice light pinky color) and the navy(nice true dark navy.)
On a side note got the toni tassel loafers in the brown/red combo...love these shoes $130...will buy other colors if prices drop.
I have tippi coming (heather burgandy) and black/tan tippi cardi and other odds and sods from the promo(two orders coming)..love when it is not final sale..went kind of crazy...but maybe we all did ?
Since the promo was good...I will not be using two of the 20% off $150 cards that are good until the end of the month....

I finally have the Lady Jacket in Double Serge Wool. It was love at first sight. I got the bright berry, and it is bright. But I think I can tone it down by pairing it with a black or dark navy dress or skirt. The buttons are gorgeous, the lining is sewn with grosgrain around the edges. It is double serge wool so it is sturdy. The construction looks very nice. I can't bear to send it back. I can't say much about the fit, it is TTS through the shoulders but I am 39 weeks pregnant (I know I should not be buying regular clothes right now!) so I can't say how it will fit through the waist. I hope I am not sorry but I don't think I will be!
ReplyDeleteI also bought the shirt dress in wool garbadine and the Collection italian wool dress in lime. I am surprised that the color of this dress if fairly close to the green Madelene dress from this summer but I don't think I can bear to send it back it is so beautiful. Again I hope I am not sorry about buying these because of my pregnancy but hopefully it will work out or I will be seeking the assistance of a good tailor!

And I'm glad some of you have had good experiences with the velvet blazer! Not everything fits or suits everyone. The pockets really didn't work on me and I was sad because I had really wanted this jacket . . . I'm glad it is going to be a treasure for others. I'm sure there will be something else on the horizon for me.

Looks like I may be the first to not love the lady jacket. I got it in berry. I agree with Sara above that it is BRIGHT. But hey, that's part of the appeal of jcrew. My issue is with the side view when worn open, such as in the model pic. So from the side, it sticks way out in the back and also in the front making me look really weird. it ruins the jacket for me. It triangles out from the shoulder down pretty severely when unbuttoned from the side profile, and I don't want to be forced into keeping the whole thing buttoned all day since the double serge gets hot to wear. Too bad. Otherwise the workmanship is nice but it has the schoolboy buttons, and I know some are not fans of those. Returning. :(
ReplyDeleteI also got the lady jacket in berry and I love it! I'll echo what others have said about the workmanship being very nice. I have a large bust and meaty upper arms so I was unsure of the fit. I got my usual 12 and it fits TTS for me. I wear jeans almost daily and can def. see me wearing this with denim.
ReplyDeleteI also just received the Swill dot blouse AJC reviewed on her blog recently and for me it's another love. I ordered the green, which is beautiful, and I think it is less sheer than the navy. I can see putting skinny jeans and heels on and feeling great. I ordered my usual size and I think the fit may be TTS to a bit large. So glad I got it.
I just got the pixie pants and the cashmere v-neck boyfriend sweater in camel and black stripe. I am 5'3" and ordered the short pixies... They bunch about an inch and a half at the ankle, which is fine because I bought these to wear with tall boots. FWIW I went down a size from my normal JC pant size.
ReplyDeleteThe boyfriend sweater is a hot mess. I ordered an xxs and the body is about twice as wide as I am! The horizontal stripes don't help. I am small chested and this just did nothing for me. It's definitely going back.
StylishlySpoken, I was just going to post about the pixie pants! Mine are way too long, too, even in the short length; I think I'd need to have them hemmed, if I keep them. I just received my order last night, and I wondered if someone could tell me how they are supposed to fit.
ReplyDeleteAre they supposed to be quite fitted (like a legging)? I am 5'2", 115 lbs, and I ordered the size 0S. The fabric is very nice, and it doesn't feel too tight, but it is QUITE hugging on the rear (my rear end is a bit of a "bubble" shape; in fact, my husband has tagged me with the dreaded "apple-bottom girl" moniker, which I despise).
I am not sure about the seams that run up the back of the leg and over the rear, and I also don't think that the back zipper is very flattering on me. However, I assume these are meant to be worn with longer sweaters/shirts (like a legging) that cover the zipper/rear a bit? Is that generally how others are wearing theirs? Thanks for the help!
Leah, it sounds like we are nearly the identical build! I had tried these before but always passed bc they were so long. A friend convinced me to try them again, for some reason I hadnt thought much about wearing them with boots!
DeleteI think having them hemmed is a great idea. I might do the same. And ditto on wearing longer tops , the exposed zipper isn't really flattering.
Leah, they are supposed to be tight, like leggings. I always wear them with something that covers, or mostly covers, my rear/the exposed zipper. I also usually wear boots, too. I believe that the short is too long on you... I am tall and the regular length hits the top of my foot.

ReplyDeleteJust received my velvet toothpicks, I ordered both the navy and the red brick in tall. I'll post some pictures later, but here is the general review:
ReplyDeleteColor: The red brick is a great color, it is bright but also fall, so it goes great with the navy sweater and navy pumps I am wearing today. The navy color toothpicks are dark, in fact, its very hard to tell they are velvet at all.
Fit: Suprised by the length of the tall, they aren't long, and I'm curious how short the regulars would be. I'm 5'7" for reference and when I stand up the hem is still a good inch above my ankle. They fit much looser on me than the same size in last year's toothpick cords (with the zippers). I might recommend ordering two sizes and just returning the one that you find the least comfortable. It might be my imagination but I feel like the rise is a little higher than last years cord toothpicks as well.
Fabric: The fabric is soft, not at all itchy. I actually can see myself lounging around in these pants on the weekends (I think most "jeans" are terribly uncomfortable).
