Vintage Variety: Frank Muytjens of J. Crew at Home
At his country retreat in upstate New York, J. Crew menswear director Frank Muytjens keeps the past ever present

J. Crew's Frank Muytjens at Home
After making the two-and-a-half-hour drive north from Manhattan, visitors to Frank Muytjens’s weekend house in Hillsdale, New York, are often surprised at just how unplugged his rural getaway is. “Friends always panic when they find out I have no high-speed Internet connection and barely any cell phone service,” says Muytjens, the head of men’s design at J. Crew. “But I like the idea of it.”

Muytjens frequently entertains guests who work in the worlds of fashion and advertising, and it’s understandable that some might be distraught upon leaving the city’s always-on energy and arriving in a lush, rolling landscape where birdsong replaces honking horns and sirens. His strategy is to distract their attention from inactive smartphones. “We make plans for dinner,” he says. “We cook and go antiquing. Or we hike—there are great nature trails around here.”
...
The interior shots of Frank's home look beautiful. There is something so cozy and inviting about his space.

What are your thoughts on the Frank's style? Do you like how he designed his living space?

  1. I really love the relaxed vibe of Mr. Muytjens' home..exactly what I pictured a "country retreat" looking like. I think it's hilarious that his guests have to unplug when visiting - a great perspective in this tech-heavy age.

It's easy to see his aesthetic based on his home; relaxed, quality pieces that don't scream "look at me!" He has things close to his heart and stuff he finds that serve a dual purpose. I wish the women designers at JCrew would look at things the same way. I've never been a fan of the feathers, sequins, overly saturated neon colors (although I know they have their place)…

Thanks J.Crew Guy in Canada and Alexis for sharing…I'm always up for "house porn" LOL!

  2. Does anyone have a 20% off of $100 coupon code that they would be willing to share? I will pay money for it and can pay through Paypal. elizabethsibsmith@gmail.com.

  3. Thanks for sharing this article, it was interesting to have a look at his country home. Sometimes you have to force people to unplug and relax. The furnishings are too industrial for me and all the stools look like clutter but I suppose in the small space they are handy and unobtrusive end tables.

  4. I see no clown colours there... nice!

  5. I like the house. One thing I was wondering about: does he have the same (or almost the same) oriental rug in every room? Is this cool or weird?

  6. Interesting to see how he likes live and unwind and the connection to what happens in the mens' design. Feels like Frank is channeling a similar vibe to restoration Hardware with some of the items and looks in his weekend home.
