"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Sizing is all over the place! How many pairs of the same shoe do I need to order to get my right size?!

I'm talking about the Martina in it's various incarnations. I love the shoe. I really do. It super cute and muy comfortable but it's just so frustrating trying to find the right size in the suede ones. I took a 7.5 in the first iteration of the calf hair animal print, so obviously I thought a size 7.5 would fit me in the Suede in the Burnt Siena color. Nope. It doesn't. Too small. I had purchased it with a 25% off, so imagine my annoyance, especially with my B&M not carrying it and all.

So okay. I'm over it. I'll just get that beautiful Jazzy Purple color instead, in a size 8. Nope. Too big. I feel like an evil stepsister at this point.

So now with this new promo, I'm going to order the Burnt Siena again, in a size 7.5 and 8 (maybe that one was a fluke?), the Jazzy purple in the 7.5 and the Black and the new calf hair that's on sale in both sizes.

On the plus side, now my store will actually carry Martinas whether they like it or not.

  2. As usual, I did not get cardholder promo. Wrote to CS and was told I can submit the order and it will be applied retrospectively. Such a nuisance .

    1. I wasn't going to bother but I had a rare moment and decided to try the online chat feature. the agent told me she made notes on my file & to call the 1 800 number place my order and they would apply it immediately then.

  3. I didn't get the cardholder promo either, Slastena. I guess I'm not a "top" cardholder! That's the message I get by the omission. In fairness to J. Crew, I've been ordering so little in the last year, they probably have put me on the bottom cardholder list. There isn't even anything I want to order so I won't be pestering CS about giving me a retroactive discount.

  4. Ordered something from the factory first site on the first day. Shipping was free and I wasn't charged duty, which I figured had to do with the big promo going on on the site. Big mistake: got the UPS duty bill last night. $25 on a $50 pair of pants. Ugh! Wish I'd just been billed the way I always am (when I purchase it, through the site).

    1. teeny84, I received a UPS duty bill on my last retail order. The web site clearly states that there will be no other charges. I contacted them and they reimbursed the amount to my credit card after I had paid UPS. I'm pretty sure Factory says the same on their site?

    2. Oh really? That's great to hear! Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to look into it.

    3. Yikes!! I ordered from the Factory First site on the first day too, and didn't get charged duty at the time! Now dreading seeing a bill from UPS! Crazy! KLlovestoshop - just to clarify, you paid the duty charge to UPS and then J. Crew reimbursed you?

    4. Yes, I emailed J. Crew and told them I received the bill. They told me to pay it and send them the receipt and they would reimburse me. I paid the UPS over the phone, emailed J. Crew a copy of my online credit card statement showing the payment, and they reimbursed me within a couple of days. :)

    5. My friend and I both received the same for emails placed on first few days. Duty is supposed to be in the cost of item - reason we Canadians pay higher prices. I placed by order that day over phone and asked sales associate if and other charges would be added later as noticed glitch with HST. I was put on hold for 5 min and then reassured I would not be. Now a month later I get a 130$ UPS bill for a 260$ order!!!!
I am arguing this one but waiting for a supervisor to "call" me back.
Happen once before at J Crew. They reimbursed me and said when item shipped out package not sent correctly as they have an option apparently with UPS that covers duty etc for orders and one that doesn't and said the latter was selected in error!
Best of luck getting a refund - its a crazy amount UPS is asking for

  5. I'm skipping the vents about j.crew today. NJ resident here and, thankfully all my friends and family survived sandy relatively unscathed (mostly power outages and downed trees), but my office was not so lucky. At last check, Hoboken is flooded and NJ transit is totally screwed. No word on when the office can open again or if I could even get there. I've seen some pretty bad pictures and I hope everyone in sandy's path is a-ok. And I heard a friend passed from cancer the day before sandy hit, but I can't get any info about it yet because of the storm.

    1. So sorry Miss JR. At times like this material things are unimportant. Good luck to yourself and all others. We were spared in Boston, but the photos and stories I see are devastating. Hoping all who need help receive it.

    2. Miss JR, I watched in horror last night seeing all the places in NJ and NYC devastated by Sandy. I lived in NJ and worked in NYC for over 30 years, moved to Colorado in 2001. My heart breaks for all of you back there and wish everyone's lifes get back to normal as soon as possible. Be safe.

  6. Miss JR, I am so sorry for your loss and for the damage. It's unbelievable to see the destruction that the storm caused. We were lucky here in Canada compared to how the U.S. fared. I pray that people will be safe and that the rebuilding will go well.

  8. Called JCrew Factory for a charge/send for the wildcat scarf. Received the wrong one. Apparently, scarves all have the same style #. Whatever - honest mistake. Called back and was super happy to hear they would ship me the right one for free, refund my $4.95 postage as well as the $2 I spent to send back the wrong one. Have been waiting a week and half for the right scarf. The store is only an hour away! Called them - the package has been sitting on their counter for 10 DAYS. Ugh. I should've just driven up there to get the stupid scarf.

  9. I've heard this complaint before and I just have to add to the chorus especially after visiting the store and trying on some things this past weekend. Why are pretty much all the pants capri length??!! I love a good J.Crew capri pant, but it is getting way too cold to wear anything that will expose my ankles and sometimes I feel like I'm wearing high water pants. I want a full-legged pant option!!

    1. I love how the cropped pants look, but you're right, my ankles are cold now!

    2. In the past few seasons, I've started ordering pants that I want to wear in the winter in tall sizes instead of regular (like toothpick cords, for instance), even though I'm of average height. I am lucky in that they work better for my freakishly long torso, as I like a higher waist. I agree that it doesn't make sense to buy a cropped pant that I can't even wear during the summer. Exposed ankles do not work in the Chicago winter!

  10. Agree! I don't think that capri length pants look good on a lot of women. I don't understand why J. Crew tries to push so many of them on us. Give us some nice full length pants please!

  11. I also agree about the capris. I think they are pushing them on us because they require less fabric than full length pants and are thus cheaper to produce. But once they start lingering on the sale racks, the added profit margin will just be erased anyway, so they should just give the customers what they want!

  12. I saw on net-a-porter that capri pants are supposed to be "in" right now, so this is probably just J Crew being trendy.

  13. I won't wear cropped pants ever. They just look silly. I grew up when "high water pants" were made fun of and being very tall I would never consider it as my whole life I have looked for long pants the correct length. Now capris or very cropped "pedal pushers" are fine as they are obviously meant to be "short" but I see people with cropped/ankle length and just cringe.

  14. I tried to get info on the preorder of the Alpaca Suri coat in Collection when it was first seen in July from my VPS. It took a couple of weeks to finally find out with emails and phone calls basic things like price, fabric content . No one seem to know anything. Then when I wanted to go ahead and place a preorder, I was told it was soldout! It hasn't even appeared online that I' ve seen. I'm looking for size 0 if anyone sees or knows of where I can purchase

  15. Hmm, maybe capris are a tall-short thing. I am a little shorter than average, and for some reason I feel like capris (and 3/4 sleeve sweaters, for example) are more in scale with my frame. But if you're tall, they probably just feel too darn short! I know that the conventional wisdom says a high-waisted full-length trouser like the Hutton gives the illusion of height, but I feel overwhelmed.

But, that still doesn't solve the problem of how to deal with bare ankles in the winter!

  16. I think the capris from JCrew also sell their shoes more...you can really see the shoes with the capris, skirts, dresses...all abundant...:)
Long pants... not so much. I live in New England..it is COLD in CT in winter...what do I do with the wool capris???

  17. And, sizing has been depressing..:) JCrew, you are making me feel like I am gaining weight.... I had to size up in the felt (wool) mini skirt...I called the SA and confirmed that the size 00 in their full length wool pencil skirt is one inch wider (waist0 than in their felt mini! So, its not me...:) And the stinking Tippi...geez...my usual XXS n that style was constricting..:)My other XS from last year are fine.

    1. I actually really like that some of the vanity sizing is finally being phased out. I am average height, but naturally very skinny, and it drove me nuts that I was just swimming in so many of the clothes from JC, AT, and many other stores. It is awful falling in love with something only to find out that not even the XXS will fit. Vanity sizing has really been the bane of my shopping existence. :(
As far as venting with JC, my No. 2 pencil skirt in wool fits well generally, but is very constrictive. I have a skirt from BR that fits a little tighter than this one, but I can walk up the stairs so much more comfortably in it. I am frequently worried that the JC skirt is going to rip.
