"Thanks!" to Marietta & HeidiG, who shared the following email J.Crew sent today.
The email reminds us that they are offering free shipping on orders of $150+ with promo code LABORDAY. This offer expires 9/7/09. :)
The email also features J.Crew's Destroyed Matchstick Jean in Busted Stone Wash (Item 18140; $118.00). The outfit also includes the Wool Ruffle Jacket (Item 17863; $198.00) and the Solid anklets Socks (three-pack; Item 19179; $24.50). There is just a lot going on with this outfit- from the bright colors to multiple accessories.
As for the jacket, I was really excited when I first saw it (refer to the "J.Crew's September Catalog (over at jcbellemarie)" post). However, I was disappointed to find out (after many of you correctly pointed it out) that the edges are frayed. And for the neon anklet socks... I will pass on them. As I mentioned in the interview with Supermelon (refer to the "An Interview with the Supermelon" post), I can't believe that is a "trend alert" in their latest catalog! ;)
What are your thoughts on the Destroyed Matchstick Jeans? Are you a fan of the style? Have you seen the Wool Ruffle Jacket in-person? Do you like or dislike the jacket? Please share! :)
I bought the lighter wash when it first came out and then just bought the darker wash last weekend. I love them, but I love a destroyed jean in general!
ReplyDeleteI tried them on at the SA's insistence last week. They're too destroyed for me to wear for most of my life, and too destroyed to pay $118 for! But! They were supremely soft and drapey, very flatteringly cut. Not as skinny as the other matchsticks. I loved them. Wish they'd go down to $50 or so. Or wish they were just distressed rather than destroyed.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree Alexis, there is a lot going on with that outfit. Too much fraying for my style. One or the other frayed piece maybe, but not both and the neon with peeptoes and the layered necklaces, all of it together is one hot mess.
ReplyDeleteI have one pair of destroyed jeans that are a couple years old and for the extremely limited opportunities I can wear such an item without raising eyebrows, they will last me a lifetime.
I am really hoping this look will be going away soon.
ReplyDeletePlease J Crew come up with something different and out of the box.
Take note Mr. Drexler and Jenna EVERYONE is doing this look......
ok, so ot, but....has anyone noticed that the Super 150's pants are unlined?! I didn't realize it when I purchsed the pants yesterday until I got home. The very least, for $130.00, I would expect suiting pants to be lined!!! I will return most definitely!
ReplyDeletelove those jeans, it was a splurge for me I am never a full price shopper.
ReplyDeleteHA! I literally laughed out loud when I saw this email! I think this look is ridiculous, and not in a good way.
ReplyDeleteI love ruffles and thought the jacket had possibilities, but the fact that they are are unfinished ended my interest in it, at least at anywhere near full price. I have yet to understand the destroyed jeans trend-- maybe at 28 I'm just too old to be into it? In any case, these jeans just look dirty and used to me-- not what I'm looking for in my clothing, no matter what the cost-- but especially not for $100+. And these silly neon socks-- J.Crew, are you kidding me? Do I look like a four-year-old to you (or even an ironic teen?)???? And to top it all off, hair that looks exactly like MY hair on mornings when I wash it at night, throw it in a ponytail, and sleep on it for eight hours!
In short, if this is what it means to "join the fray", I say, no thanks!
Btw, JC: I was at a B&M not long after the 120s suiting launched, and another woman tried them on while I was in the dressing room. She made a comment to the SA about the pants not being lined, and the SA said "Unlike regular wool, the 120s material is woven so tightly that it does not require a lining." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I'm so glad she didn't say that to me, b/c I wouldn't have been able to control myself from laughing in her face! As it was, I found it difficult to contain my giggles...
Dear J.Crew: you need to stop believing your own hype and go back to making cute, QUALITY, classic clothes w/ that special something that used to make me swoon!
I find the socks-with-heels trend to be very back-to-the-80's. Yes, I am old enough to remember the Madonna craze and I fear JC is going too far in that direction. Yuck. It is a very juvenile look. And not to mention, NONE of my shoes will fit with socks, so am I supposed to purchase shoes a full size larger to get THE LOOK??
ReplyDeleteJCrew, how about recommending some trends that those of us older than 20 can actually pull off??
I'm in the minority, but IF I were 5'10 and 100 pounds, I'd probably parade around in this ensemble. However, because I am short those jeans and the socks/shoes combo would make me looks like some sort of gnome who had too much fun at the thrift store.
ReplyDeleteI think that the only benefit of Jcrew's latest round of jackets is that their unpopularity is likely to indicate a HUGE sale (at least I hope so). While I'd never pay full price for "frayed edges", poor fits (I'm looking at you, School Boy Blazer) and recycled designs, I might consider these items on serious sale and some tailoring.
RE JC suiting pants: If they don't itch, do they need to be lined? I have some wool suiting pants that aren't lined and they feel and look great and don't itch. Also I find sometimes lining in pants feels weird and bunches up. If you think they feel good as they are, don't worry about lining.
ReplyDeletealtagracia, ITA on the lack of lining with J. Crew's suiting. I am so glad I bought the suiting from three to five years ago, it was all fully lined and excellent quality. This year I bought the boyfriend jacket and the only lining was around the shoulders. I thought it was such a poor excuse for a shortcut and I returned it. The quality issue is making me sad for J. Crew. If they have decided to abandon quality, they shouldn't call it out as a strength. Better to not mention it at all.
ReplyDeleteI actually like the socks-with-heels look! I think it looks cute and comfy. But maybe that's because my feet are really skinny and pale and I don't always like the way they look in open shoes. However, I'm too old for neon socks.
ReplyDeleteI like the jeans, but wouldn't pay full price for them. I was interested in the jacket until I realized it was frayed. ATL has a ruffle cotton jacket (machine washable!) that is cute - the black is marked down to 50 and the light gray is still full price at 79.50. I bought the black tonight - very cute and flattering!
ReplyDeleteAnyone else think the matchstick denim felt cheap? Too thin and too much stretch in it for me. Like everyone, I thought the jacket was really cute until I saw the frayed edges. That design decision boggles my mind!
ReplyDeleteI'm experimenting with the sock look.. but I don't think it's working for me. Come over to my blog and lmk what you think :)
Looks like someone got dressed in the dark. Or maybe it's laundry day.
ReplyDeleteRe: lined vs. unlined suiting. Lining is a sign of quality, but the lining has to be done properly, not bunching or causing other fit issues. Lining will make a garment last longer and wrinkle less. It can also be more comfortable if you are wearing cotton underneath, whether undergarments or a cotton blouse/sweater/tee under a suit jacket. Linings usually have some ease sewn in, especially on jackets. The lining can give with your movements and the outer part of the garment holds its structured shape.
I bought a pair of wool suiting pants from J.Crew last winter and didn't realize they were unlined. When I tried them on at home it was still warm fall weather and the wool against skin feeling made my skin crawl. Back they went. Now, if any wool suiting doesn't specifically mention that it is fully-lined, I won't even consider it.
Just this week my employer "re-issued" our dress code (always in place, but they are reminding us) and it says: NO DENIM, except casual Friday, "neat jeans." So, if I were in college or self-employed, maybe I would be thinking about this look...another line in the code: "No shorts of any kind." Bye bye short suits and shorts with tights!
ReplyDeleteI cannot bring myself to buy a new pair of jeans that have an actual hole and rips going through them. I don't like holes in garments or the snag/rip potential they bring to an outfit. I'll admit those jeans were very soft, though. If only it weren't for such extreme detailing. I also wish they would provide pictures of the pants unrolled. I don't really roll my pants.
ReplyDeleteI ordered the jacket and it came earlier this week. The 0 was a little long for me in the arms. The frey wasn't really that noticeable, but with the button closed, it didn't sit quite right (at least on me). I ordered the rosebud color and it's not as subtle as I was expecting it to be -- for some reason, I expected it to be somewhere between a rosy pink and papaya. It's definitely more of a pink.
ReplyDeleteIt's also pretty thin -- not going to keep you warm. I have the Maggie in the Berry and decided to not order a petite size, which I think would have fixed the sizing issue...have too many ruffle items in the closet and was worried the trend wouldn't last. Overall, the jacket is pretty and for those of you that are worried about the frey, it's really not that bad.
Might reconsider when it goes on sale...
HTH :)
wtf is Japanese denim? 'nuff said.
ReplyDeleteI actually like the jacket. I also ordered the frances cami in rosebud and the two look great together. I have a thing for ruffles.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the frayed edges, they aren't frayed yet and I might buy some fray check at the sewing store to keep it that way.
