"Thanks!" to many of you, including Green_Dino (in this post), Twiga (in this post), Genny (in this post), as well as Cass & Ruffles (in this post), who let us know about J.Crew's latest promotion.
J.Crew is offering an additional 20% off sale items (no minimum) using promo code EXTRA20 . This offer expires Thursday, 9/10/09.
Also, "thanks!" to Marietta who shared an email (shown below) that was sent this morning. It clarifies that the promo is available online only. Which is good to know, as I wasn't sure if brick & mortar (B&M) stores would be offering 20% off final sale as well.
I am thrilled to see this promotion- it makes shopping final sale a whole lot sweeter. :) However, (as many of you have pointed out) I am curious as to why J.Crew waited until after Labor Day weekend to roll it out. ;)
Are you planning to check out J.Crew's Sale Section? Did you take advantage of this offer? If so, please share! :)
To quote Homer Simpson: D'oh.
ReplyDeleteI placed an order at 11 pm last night -- without the EXTRA20. But, it looks like I got the last corsage cardi in my size. Let's see if I really get it.
I just don't understand them sometimes. They would have gotten more business over the weekend. I'd imagine at this point, the day AFTER Labor Day, that many are shopped out or just too frustrated with jc to make an order. I won't be taking advantage of this offer for both of those reasons!
ReplyDeleteAs a former retail store owner, I'm going to guess that that B&Ms didn't do the business over the weekend that corporate expected.
ReplyDeleteHas there been an update today?
ReplyDeletePakola: there was a small update just a little while ago.
ReplyDeleteNo update, no good reason to shop JC right now. No more free ship at Anthro. Boo!
ReplyDeleteThis weekend I returned the ruffle rose dress in plum raisin. Actually, the dress is gorgeous, and very flattering. The color is great, and even though the ruffle placket is YET ANOTHER unfinished flourish it doesn't feel like it would unravel with the quickness. I think the seeming durability is due to thicker cotton. The neckline is not too low but still highlights the bustline and collar area nicely and brings the focus up to the face prettily. And I LOVE the color. I returned it due to the thin fabric that makes up the body of the dress. It's made of a soft blend of 57% cotton, 38%modal/rayon, 5% spandex, which is what the Adelaide, parlor dress, and a bunch of others are made of. I think for a fall offering the fabric should be at least the weight and thickness of this summer's strapless jersey twist front dress, I think it was the "dressy" jersey. I like the fabric used, but they should have beefed it up to a heavier gauge jersey. That said, I'll probably rebuy it at half or more off! Just my two cents.
I echo that D'OH!, JCK. My order on sale stuff went through last Thursday.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me, or do others also think it's kinda cheap of JC to post the 20% off notice after the weekend is over, after all the other stores have been offering great discounts for ages?
Too little, too late.
I'm done with summer clothing until next year; I'll make do with what I have in my closet until then. Bring on the fall items.
ReplyDeleteTree leaves are beginning to turn here and it is definitely cooler out in the morning and evening. Not time yet for the wool sweaters, but I can feel it coming.
OT - anyone know where I could find the Annette Leopard Lawn Blouse (cotton)? Is ebay my only option or stalking the refreshed website every morning. Looking for a 2/4/6.
ReplyDeleteI already spent my budgeted dollars this weekend at the mall. Too bad jcrew didn't offer me any discounts to compete with the other retailers. Money went to the competitors!
ReplyDeleteI picked up a few crewcuts items- free shipping + 20% but it is slim pickings and most of it has been there for ages....I agree with others that it would have been nice to have the promo earlier...
ReplyDelete20% off doesn't really help when shipping is too high. I didn't order a thing and won't order a thing until maybe fall.
ReplyDeleteI say maybe because they aren't offering any discounts on fall items! Everyone else is so my dollars are quickly going elsewhere.
Oh shoot, I was hoping for a Private Sale of 20% rather than a further markdown of the picked-over summer stuff. The longer my cart sits full of FP fall merchandise, the more I am finding similar items elsewhere for less . . .
ReplyDeleteDoes free ship apply as well?
ReplyDeleteSW - There is no free shipping offered with this discount.
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly why I am not buying anything with this discount. I agree with everyone else's comments...too little too late...already spent enough at other retailers.
I'm kind of over the Summer stock and looking only at Fall. They would have to have some incredible deals to entice me for what left on summer. Now a 20% Private Sale would be a different story!!!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like a game they are playing... after free ship code is over (some codes) JC offers 20% off FS. It's a process to get rid of Final sale stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe final section is picked over and some items are still too expensive considering end of season. I won't be getting any thing since JC is not offering free shipping or a lower flat rate option ($5.95?).
The no minimum is nice. I guess. (tinge of sarcasm)
ReplyDeleteI always try to remind myself that 20% basically amounts to a 10% savings after shipping is applied.
J CREW -- FREE SHIPPING should AT LEAST apply to cardholders!!!! If you want to require a minimum to earn the FS, that's fine, but come on...where is the incentive to purchase things that we cannot return??!!!??? Some of which we cannot even see in person because they are Internet only!
I can't remember the exact format, but are my efforts to soothe my irritation...
butterflies
koala bears
you are the wind beneath my wings
The only thing I wanted from the sale section was another cotton corsage cardi, but I didn't use the 20% off promo, I used the free shipping instead, with a FP fall pencil skirt. I just made a huge purchase over at Ann Taylor, they have some darling stuff and I was able to use a 30% off code, plus they are currently offering free shipping on orders over $150, no code needed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with others - would like 20% off of all merch so could pick up some fall items that I can't afford at regular price. I am over the summer stuff.
ReplyDeleteI also shopped sales elsewhere this weekend.
I totally agree with AppGal (and others). Why now?? Also, I find it completely ridiculous the way they love to pull everything out of final sale for these measly promos. FS will be full of merchandise again when this promo is over! UGH
ReplyDeleteDoes the extra 20 apply to in store sale purchases as well?
ReplyDeleteErin, unfortunately, it does not, the email states that it is online only. :-(
ReplyDeleteI will not be partaking in this one...no new updates! :(
ReplyDeleteNothing from the sale section that I want. A blanket 20% everything would be better, but even then nothing comes to mind. Had a few FP things in my cart to consider and it was dumped over the weekend. Can't even remember what it was that I had in there so obviously not important.
ReplyDeleteI was looking at maybe getting the Nicolette strappy heels item 12010. Does anyone have those? Other than that, there is nothing really interests me from the JCrew sale section.
ReplyDeleteI've already reached my shopping limit this past weekend at Anthropolgie and Tommy Hilfiger (I have never shopped there before). They actually had some very cute shoes and belts on super sale! Yay!
Emily has a great post on her trip to J'Crewlet. The repro of the berry trimmed Astrid is available in charcoal.
ReplyDeletehttp://champagne-and-cupcakes.blogspot.com/2009/09/visit-to-j-crew-outlet.html
Picked up some golden cafe capris as I like my white pair a lot. They were around $23 after the EXTRA20 with shipping included. Not bad, but not that great considering I got my white pair months ago for $29.99, no codes required.
ReplyDeletePicked up the super 120s Jayne dress in butterscotch, a fall item marked down. Called and asked for free shipping (and got it!)when I realized I couldn't double dip with the EXTRA20 and the shipping code.
ReplyDeleteI'm with eveyone else... I'm over summer stuff and this promo isn't that exciting! I want a private sale and free shipping... Then the credit card would be smokin'!
ReplyDeletePicked up a bikini, some Crewcuts items for my little one, and a pair of jeans and swimming trunks for my hubby. All great deals, specially the swimwear!
ReplyDeleteWell, I did place an order early last week, but the things I bought are gone already so I don't feel too bad. I did have some serious moments of mouse-hovering over the weekend when I spotted the Ikat skirt popback in my size at $49.99, but once I factored in the shipping and tax I couldn't do it. Also, someone here mentioned last week that they were holding out for EXTRA20 after the weekend and sure enough...! If it was free shipping + extra20 i'd be allllll over it. But the shipping and tax costs are dealbreakers. Ah well.
ReplyDeleteAlso, as for why EXTRA20 now ... I figure Labor Day marks the 'official' end of summer so JC figures people are over summer clothing at this point. As someone who lives in the South and has at least another month or two of hot/warm temps, summer is not over yet here! :-)
I just placed a small order - 2 perfect fit crew neck tees and the slub cotton ruffle tank in pale lilac. I'm thinking though that it might be a long shot on getting the ruffle tank - it's back ordered until 9/21 and the first time I tried to place the order it was "removed" from my bag. Fingers crossed that I receive it!
ReplyDeleteAndrew - I have the annette leopard cotton blouse in size 4 that I'd sell to you - I've only worn it a few times. It's clean, in perfect condition, and hanging in my closet in the "get rid of these since you don't wear them" section. Email me at lwaldal at otivo dot com
ReplyDeleteWould be nice if there was a restock, there's hardly anything available in the sale section. And what is with the two-day promo? Seems kind of short IMO. Better for my wallet, I guess.
ReplyDeleteI'll be taking back 2 items to a store next weekend, but figured I'd list them here in case anyone is interested (both BNWT):
ReplyDeletePilar Dress, size xs, plum raisin, $84 shipped.
Cambridge cable V-neck, size s, plum raisin, $79 shipped.
If you are interested in both, i'd combine shipping :)

Anyone else remember the day of an extra 40% off sale. I would go crazy if I saw that pop up ever again. (used to get free ship too with that!)
ReplyDeleteJust returned the Professor jacket on my way home from work. When the SA asked why, I very nicely said that all other retailers I like are offering me incentives to shop with them, and that's why they're getting my dollars and not J.Crew. I had just come from AT, where I bought a tweed skirt & fall jacket, for 20% off plus triple points on my card.
ReplyDeleteIt was my little protest against J.Crew's practices. If they're going to sit on the sidelines while other retailers are in the game, they're not going to get my attention.
La Belle Helene: I don't blame you for returning the professor blazer. With the exception of the double serge pencil skirts, the quality of many of Jcrew's collection are at an high price point in comparison to other retailers.
ReplyDeleteKara,
ReplyDeleteThat's funny you mention the double-serge skirt, because I decided that's the one item I'm OK with having purchased full price from J.crew this fall :-) (Love that fresh plum color). I agree the quality on that is solid.
I'm waiting for the roll out next week to spend my money (not to mention I need another pay check! :D). I could find the money if it was 20% any merchandise plus free shipping, though. :)
ReplyDeleteLa Belle Helene
ReplyDeleteI know exactly which tweed skirt in AT you are talking about...I've been lusting after it since I saw it in their mailer. I've been romancing it in store for a week now, but since I'm not sure where I'd wear it, I've been holding out. I was very impressed with AT's merchandise, BTW. Very elegant.
Sigh...another screwed up order from JC. Ordered mila tank from sale section in size 14, and when I received it the bag said size 14 and the hanging tag said size 14, but the sewn-in tag clearly said size 6, and when I tried to put it on, it was indeed a size 6. I imagine someone returned this for the same reason (it was a pop-back) and they never bothered to inspect it in the warehouse. A few months ago I ordered a silk charmeuse blouse and got a pair of cotton khaki shorts in a bag marked silk charmeuse blouse. I have a few more sale items on their way to me...since some were popbacks i'm really wondering what the odds are they will actually be the correct size/color/item. I may have to join the "no more popbacks" bandwagon.
ReplyDeleteCanadian JCAs looking for an alternative to J.Crew, Club Monaco has some lovely fall items. You can't purchase online, but you can take a look.
ReplyDeleteHey remember those special one time use coupons our husbands/roommates, etc. got in the Sept Catalog for free shipping? Mine said it expired Sept 3rd and I had not used it yet. I tried it today and it STILL WORKED! So, if you have not used yours yet - try it.
ReplyDeleteI also was able to stack it with the EXTRA20. You have to try inputting it in different ways at checkout. First I put EXTRA20. Then I added the free shipping code. It erased the EXTRA20 discount but gave me the free shipping. So I put in the EXTRA20 code again and this time it took off the 20%! So I was able to get free shipping with the 20%.
Anyway, I didn't really see too much as I HATE final sale. But I did buy the short sleeve cashmere sweater in natural. I figured I couldn't go wrong with a neutral color!
If I ever started my own blog I would have to call it "My J.Crew Returns". Lately I have been returning so much it is ridiculous. Everything I buy has a problem with quality, construction, materials or fit/sizing and the vast majority of it is full price merch. I returned over $400 today alone. I'm going to take a little break from J.Crew and look around at alternatives.
ReplyDeleteCass:
ReplyDeleteI've had similar problem with my recent orders. I ordered a size small cardigan (a popback...) and what I received had was actually XS when the tag and bag stated sz small.
I also received a shirt and capri pants with stains.
dickfiddy:
I've been returning a lot lately, too. Now when I receive my orders I have to inspect it like a mad woman since I don't know what's wrong with it.
I adore coupon codes! :)
ReplyDeleteThe quality on the Francis camis and shirts, the perfect pencil skirts and the perfect shirts seems to be good. I have returned a ton of other stuff because I just wasn't excited with the quality or I found a very similar item for 1/3 to 1/2 of J Crew's price.
ReplyDeleteFor example, I have been lusting after J Crew's ruffled merino v-neck. It is currently $78. Instead, I purchased two of the Ann Taylor merino v-necks during the buy one get one 1/2 of promo and then used my 30% off coupon. I ended up getting two of those for less than one of the J Crew ones, and the color selection is more to my taste (with more colors coming later, according to my favorite SA at AT). Sorry J Crew, but as much as I love that little piece of chiffon, a v-neck is largely a v-neck.
I was really surprised to see the ribbon-front top on sale so quickly, plus with an extra 20 percent off.
ReplyDeleteYes I remember the 40% off and once upon a time there was a 50% off in crewcuts (B&M only I think??) and my kids are still wearing all of the goodies I picked up.
ReplyDeleteI returned several items this weekend as I cannot justify keeping so many FP items with 0% discount. So the good news is that I now know what to order when the Fall stuff makes it to the FS section.
3 of my past 5 orders have had mistakes- very frustrating! Some were Full price items, but they sent the wrong size. Of course now the size I need is sold out and others were FS items and those I have given up hope on ever finding again:( something must have changed at the warehouse for all of us to have this many issues?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else noticed the pricing on the Frenchie Slicker? I feel like it's been in the sale section forever, priced at $69.99. Now that there's an extra 20% off, they've upped the price to $89.00!!! J. Crew, give us a break!
ReplyDeleteSo the EXTRA20 is online only, but can you go to a B&M and place a red phone order and get the discount plus free shipping that way? I've been eyeing the Lizza jacket for a while but have never tried it on so am wary of the FS aspect. Saving $15 bucks on the shipping might put me over the edge...
ReplyDeleteDickfiddy-"My Jcrew returns" this-is-awesome. You should do it lmao. It's sad when you try to give a co. your money and they just can't get it right!
ReplyDeleteAmber - On the last orders I've placed from the store w/FS items, they have made a point to tell me I'm getting charged for shipping on them.
ReplyDeleteAny reviews of the watercolor tortoiseshell skirt? How does it fit compared to the watercolor floral pencil skirt and cocodrillo pencil skirt? Also, how is the fit of the double serge pencil skirt compared to these 2? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCan Someone tell me how the ribbon front top runs. Sizing is so erratic these days.
ReplyDeleteLealee -- I reviewed it in this thread:
ReplyDeletehttp://gigisgoneshopping.blogspot.com/2009/08/j-crew-ribbon-front-top.html
Within that post are 5 or 6 other links to bloggers who have irl pics of the top.
One more question since there is no store nearby, Im 5'6" do you think a 6 tall in the swirled ruffle tank would be appropriate if tucked in. TIA
ReplyDeleteLealee - I reviewed the swirl tank here:
ReplyDeletehttp://gigisgoneshopping.blogspot.com/2009/07/j-crew-cotton-silk-ruffle-swirl-tank.html
I don't have any links to other bloggers on that thread, but there are comments the top.
You might want to call J Crew cust servive and ask for the length on the 6T.
dickfiddy and jcmama,
ReplyDeleteYou guys sound like me. I have to inspect every item in great detail b/c EVERY order has something wrong with it for about the past year! It is getting to the point where I no longer am excited to get my orders. I just keep thinking "what is going to be wrong this time." I think I need a serious JCRew break or continue to keep my expectations really low!
dickfiddy,jcmama, Genny
ReplyDeleteMy last 2 orders have been screwups also, and they have been fp items. Items were tagged with the wrong color, hole in a tee fp item, and I suspect my sweater is a large even though it is marked a medium.
You have to order 2 sizes now to get your size, even though I phone for the measurements they always seem to be off.
I refuse to buy popbacks, you never know what you are getting.
casual-crew,
ReplyDeleteGlad I am not the only one. I am no longer buying popbacks either. I just don't have time to deal with the headache of problems. I too had a fp sweater come with a hole in it more than once! And received worn items....serious quality control issues...
I remember 50% off sale items in store last fall (all departments). That was awesome! I remember getting painter v-necks/boatnecks for $5. That is a deal I like!
ReplyDeleteI did! I got 2 pairs of pants for my husband and a pirate tie for my son... but now i have to see if they have that flower belt i wanted months ago... back to the sale.
ReplyDeleteMust vent!
ReplyDeleteTwo orders ago (almost two mos. ago), I ordered the downtown field jacket and the contrast-stitch perfect shirt. Received a different blue button-down shirt in my size and no jacket (clearly someone else's order). Contacted CS, returned the shirt immediately. Am now told they have no record of my return, despite my having used the USPS return label they provided. Have not received a refund for the two items I ordered and never received *almost two months ago* (despite the fact that I wouldn't have had to make the return if they'd send me the correct items in the first place).
Most recent order (about two weeks ago): made the mistake of ordering several regular sale items. When they arrived, the invoice marked them all as final (not regular) sale, and of course every single one of them was damaged - one shirt with a giant lipstick stain that anyone would have noticed (it was visible through the front of the bag - someone had to see it, packing up the order). More waste of my time and return shipping to send unwearable messes back to the warehouse. Is this their way of training us to buy at full price? - to shoot sale items full of holes and spray them with makeup stains before packing them up?
Ahhhh!
Rae,
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting. (I hope others post about their messed up orders as well b/c JCrew reads this blog!)
So sorry to hear about your problme orders. At least I feel like I am not alone now. I thought I was the only one getting repeated *issues* with my orders.
Rae: You have to use a trackable way of returning items back to J Crew. Then you have the proof the item has been returned when speaking to CS. Apparently the return department is so busy these days surprise surprise things are getting missed.
ReplyDelete
