The email features J.Crew's Navy Wool Schoolboy Blazer (Item 17072; $178.00). As mentioned previously (refer to the August 18th "J.Crew Fall Collection: What Would You Get?" post), I have seen and tried on this jacket many times. Each time I go back, there are fewer and fewer sizes left so it must be selling well. Overall, I think it's a lovely jacket but a little pricey.
The pros of the jacket: (1) the fabric which has a nice weight & feel for "traditional Donegal wool with a hint of stretch"; and (2) it's a great piece that works with different outfits (can be dress up with trousers, and dress down with jeans).
The main con of the jacket: as other JCAs have found, there is an issue of sizing. If I go down my normal size, the shoulders are a bit snug but the body of the jacket fits well (but not tight]. However, if I go with my normal size, I find the shoulders are fine, but the body is too big.

After receiving this email this morning I went over to the site and checked the sale. There are some "pre-fall" items now on sale. Pretty quick turn-around I think.
ReplyDeleteTwo items I've had my eye on were the Hammered Metal Skirt ($78 to $59.99) and the Scattered Petals Tank ($88 to $49.99).
One other item I've been eyeing, more as a "lust", is the Dulce Sequin Skirt from $450 down to $299.99. Now if only there were any left.
Thanks for the reference!
I purchased the Gap version of this jacket a few weeks ago, but I am disappointed with the fit and quality. I shop almost exclusively at J.Crew, and thought that perhaps I could save a bit by purchasing a similar jacket. However, I think I'll probably return it and buy the real thing- in my opinion it is probably worth the money at J.Crew.

ReplyDeleteI own the Gap Boyfriend blazer that is similar to this navy one at J.Crew and love it. The weight is perfect for Florida weather, not to mention that I got it during the F&F event so the price was fantastic, too. :) I would however like to eventually get the J.Crew Heather Carbon Schoolboy blazer, but not until the price gets significantly reduced.
ReplyDeleteToday's e-mails have included 20% off offer from L&T, 25% off from AT, and 15% off at Cole Haan. J.Crew, meanwhile, sends a stale e-mail reminding me of a jacket that's been on offer what, close to a month now? Donnez moi un break, J.Crew!
ReplyDeleteI tried this jacket when it first came out and found that the fit was off. That plus the price tag made it a no go for me.
ReplyDeleteJ.Crew needs to step it up with the promos already. I have spent all my fall money at other retailers because the deals there were just too good to pass up.
I just came back from the GAP and they have really changed. Their straight leg cords are on promotion $15.00 off, and they are really good quality.
ReplyDeleteAlso I picked up some tees not sheer, no holes, perfect for layering or wearing alone for $15.00 each (on promo) as well.
If anyone is looking to re-create the preppy/school-look, I found this on boden's site and it's pretty cute looking (Preppy Knitted Blazer):

Don't own it yet, but expecting it shortly. The light brown/green trim reminded me of the Lexington Blazer from a few seasons ago. There are a few coupons floating around for 11% off and free shipping and returns..
I love the schoolboy blazer in Navy. I wish J.Crew would offer more of this style of cut on blazers. I am looking forward to picking it up once a discount is offered.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the pose of the model in the photograph, she appears all scrunched up as if shivering from the cold.
IMO, both the "school boy" and the "boyfriend" jackets are nothing more than classic suit jackets (with perhaps a slightly narrower lapel). If you have the time, I'd hit the thrift stores for these type items. I took an old suit jacket I had from the 90s and "prettied up" the bottom portion of my outfit in one of my old blog posts. If you care to see it, I'll link to it at the bottom of my comment. At any rate, I'll be passing on the jcrew versions -- too much $$.

I too find the jacket very covetable but I like the Boyfriend Blazer more.
ReplyDeleteI tried this jacket in sizes P0, P2 and 2, and none of them really fit so they all went back. It was sad, because I really liked the navy fabric. I was hoping to get something cheaper than the super120s suit jacket, that would bring some polish to the jeans I wear to work. Does have success regularly pairing Jcrew suit jackets with jeans and sneakers?
ReplyDeletecyclone: yup, i wear jeans and ballet flats /sneakers/flip flops (or heels) with blazers all the time. Not the nice wool suit blazers much (except for one that has a washed look by now and cute lining to roll the sleeves up), but the cotton suiting.
ReplyDeleteunder the blazer - tshirts (like the language tees!), silk blouses like the emerson, or thin button downs all look cute.
I usually add a tie silk belt or other colorful preppy belt to the mix and some girly jewelry. works for a student and for weekends : )
lilac cupcake,
ReplyDeleteSeriously! So agree on the stepping up the promos already. My shopping bag is still full and my fall budget has been spent elsewhere. :-(
Yet I'm so happy with my purchases!
audball,
ReplyDeleteLove love love the Boden Sweater Blazer!
It's so J. Crew.
For anyone looking for the Blushed Tweed Collier jacket in a size 14, I saw one in the Palo Alto J. Crew yesterday. Wow, the color is a lot brighter than I imagined in the catalog. Palo Alto had a larger sale section than I've seen in the other J. Crews. And the Valley Fair J. Crew had slightly more jewelry than I've seen, I managed to get the Dusty Blossom Crystal Libretto necklace, it's prettier than I expected.
ReplyDeleteI just got my professor and heather carbon schoolboy blazers! I ordered the petite size and it fit me perfectly. Also, the quality doesn't disappoint. It's super soft. I love, love it so much I will keep them at full-price! I can't wait to wear them.
ReplyDeleteIf I have to choose one, I would say the fit of the schoolboy is a tiny bit better than the professor. However, I love the details on the professor, including the buttons (reminiscent to the Bellas!)
I will definitely get the navy one if this blazer goes on sale.
