J.Crew Sets its Sights on Canada!

Michelle Obama's style secret sets its sights on Canada
She put J. Crew on the retail map. As the brand looks to expand, Canadians will soon get to steal the fashion-forward first lady's look

Michelle Obama helped put New York-based J.Crew on the international retail map by sporting its fashions in her public appearances. Now Canada may one day get some of that preppy Obama style in its shopping malls.


J.Crew has hired one of this country's top retail-real estate consultancies to hunt down store locations and already it's talking to major landlords.

The Obama tie-in gives the chain of about 300 stores an extra lift when entering new territory, industry insiders said.
“What an amazing endorsement,” said Glenn Featherstone, vice-president of retail leasing at Morguard Investments Ltd., which manages 48 shopping centres in Canada. “As a landlord, our objective is to put in our shopping centres the best combination of the most popular retailers. J.Crew is a popular brand. It's well received by the Canadian market. I look forward to working with them.”

Ms. Obama gave J.Crew her first big sign of support last October when, still on the campaign trail, she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno wearing a yellow cardigan ($118 U.S.), yellow and brown tank top ($148) and pencil skirt ($148) – all from J.Crew.

The retailer quickly capitalized on what it says was unexpected publicity. Marketers purchased “Michelle Obama” keywords on Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, created a page on the jcrew.com site that pitched her outfit and advised call-centre employees about how to deal with questions about her style. The online message: “Shop J.Crew for the Michelle Obama Look.”

In January, Ms. Obama and her daughters put J.Crew in the spotlight when they wore the retailer's items at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, briefly prompting J.Crew's website to crash from the huge traffic. The brand got exposure again in April when the first lady chose the J.Crew crystal constellation cardigan ($298) and dazzling dots pencil skirt in mint green ($158) for a visit to 10 Downing St. in London. The sweater sold out by 10 a.m. East Coast time.

Known as an accessible label that, unlike higher-priced designer brands, doesn't break the bank, J.Crew delivers a chic but casual style. Men tend to like it for its dressy casual look that generally can be difficult for them to put together.

“Laser focused” is how retail analyst Jennifer Black, president of Jennifer Black & Associates in Lake Oswego, Ore., describes J.Crew. “A company that beats the Street based on revenue growth in this retail environment is surely doing something right,” Ms. Black said in a report last week. “We attribute the company's success to a number of things, but most importantly to having unique, authentic merchandise that offers good value.”

J.Crew's efforts to lower some of its prices during the economic downturn – offering more merchandise for less than $100 – will serve it well this fall, she said. And its attentive customer service has probably helped it grab business from upscale boutiques.

Still, even with the Obama glow, the retailer is feeling the pinch of the economic slump. In its latest quarter, while it exceeded analysts' targets, its same-store sales at outlets open a year or more – an important measure in retail – fell by 5 per cent.

A move to Canada would be attractive for J.Crew because retailers here haven't been squeezed nearly as severely as their U.S. counterparts by the recession, Ms. Black said.
However, it could take years before J.Crew finds the right locations in Canada, said Sam Winberg, principal at Northwest Atlantic (Canada) Inc., which is advising J.Crew on sites here. “It's about waiting for the right opportunities, not about a particular set time.”

...J.Crew may benefit from snooping around for retail space during tough times, said retail specialist Wendy Evans of Evans & Co. Consultants Inc.
The economic slump has forced many landlords to offer retailers good deals to lure them to their malls, she said. “They are making concessions they would never have made a year ago or more,” she said. “Rates are dropping by 30 to 40 per cent.”

She predicted that J.Crew would be a big draw for malls. Already its name is established among many Canadians who shop at its U.S. stores and through its catalogues, said Ms. Evans, who has J.Crew fashions in her closet. “Most people I know would have something from J.Crew. Its reputation precedes it in this market.”

It also has the advantage of having what many consider a retail whiz as its chairman and chief executive officer. Millard (Mickey) Drexler was credited as having built the Gap retailer in its heyday before moving to J. Crew in 2003 to rejuvenate that chain. At Gap, he was familiar with Canada, having set up stores here more than a decade ago.


Heather Reisman, CEO of Toronto-based Indigo Books & Music, sits on the board of directors of J.Crew and is a big fan of Mr. Drexler. “What I learned from Mickey is: You have to have a point of difference and you have to have a real passion for what you're trying to do,” she said recently. “Second, you're not going to get it all right, which I knew from experience.”

I am happy to hear that J.Crew is planning to open stores in Canada– I think it's a great market to expand to. I am also really happy to hear that they are doing their due diligence in finding the right location for expansion. Although, I am curious when they plan on opening a store (is it a year from now or five years?)

  1. This is great news, my guess they will test the waters in the larger cities where other US retailers have set up shop and have done well. JC name is known here by many people it would be nice to shop in a store and see things irl.

    On another note: I had the opportunity to see the Constellation Cardigan IRL and have to say it was really a let down. I can't believe it cost so much and that there was so much hype over it, either.

  4. I can't wait! I pretty much visit the website daily looking for inspiration. I tried to order a pair of shoes last year for my wedding but it was too expensive after factoring in the duty etc. My first stop when in Seattle recently was J.Crew, and I made out like a bandit scoring my holy grail, the silk Frances cami in deep rose.

    I wonder how this will affect shipping and such to Canadian addresses. Most likely it'll take a year or two before they set up shop here; but I'm ready.

    I'm surprised, though, because I heard (or read) something from Mickey last year saying that they had no plans to expand to Canada, that they wanted to concentrate on the US.

    I can think of a few Toronto malls/neighbourhoods that would be perfect (and just so happen to be near me! :) )

  12. OMG - this is the best news on a dull friday! I am making a trip to NYC and hope to hit 3 of my favourite locations this weekend, it will be nice when the trip to jcrew is a subway ride away. For all the Canadian JCA who knew Heather Reisman sat on the jcrew board? That is a little bit exciting to know we have a Torontonian working the Canadian retail angle for us.

  13. I am in Canada and I am actually really disappointed about this news. I shop at J Crew all the time (on-line orders and every time I am in the States) and I love the fact that I don't see my clothes coming and going when I'm in Canada. The "exclusivity" factor is a big plus for me. If they open stores here (where there are fewer cool stores to start with) I'm sure I'll be seeing J Crew clones on every street!

    Funny, we were all dying for Anthropologie to come to Canada (and A&F before that) -- now that it's here, I think I've only been two or three times.

    I thought I read an article before where Mickey wants to focus less on retail B&M here in US and more focus on online/catalog?
    Launching Madewell and expanding J. Crew to Canada it's a lot of $$ and time... I sure hope J. Crew can get its quality control issues straight.

  16. I think the exclusivity factor of the noticeable prints/ "statements"-within-normal-budgets is going to go down regardless of new stores with all the publicity (Alexis, any stats on how much your blog grew over the last say 5 years? a Jenna Lyons correlated buzz? MichelleO effect? : )).

    I used to not see much "oh that is JCrew/ I know the name of that piece" in the SF Bay Area (weird considering how many stores there are) but now I see a medallion print biking past, a coworker with the corsage tee the month it's released and not just on me and the SAs : ) ... but it's really not RAMPANT even in an urban area and the way you style the pieces dilutes the chance of she's-wearing-my-dress syndrome IMO. plus, don't you always see the car you're interested in buying or just bought *everywhere* on the road?

  18. I see jcrew everywhere in Toronto and it doesn't bother me. I often think 'I wish I owned that piece too'. My collegues and I own a lot of jcrew and a lot of the same stuff. In the 3 years we have been working together, we have never worn the same thing on the same day. While it is true that jcrew has more iconic prints and colours which makes it more recognizable I don't think it makes it any less special. What will be most interesting is seeing how the retail pricing works and other perks like the red phone and discount cards etc.

  19. Yea for Canadian JCAs! I hope this means there will be Canadian distribution centers, too, so there won't be duty taxes on their orders anymore. Sounds like the expansion into the north won't be a "takeover" or saturation but a growth into a receptive market. Good article!

  21. Exclusivity is definitely an issue here in NYC. But it's not a big deal, you learn to live with it. What I do is wear my older Jcrew pieces this year. This summer I wore my Cynthia smocked, Paulina, Emma & Alessia blouses to death. Did not bump into anyone wearing the same items. I did not buy many items this summer because I do not see this year's designs & the quality holding up two years from now. Are you also missing Jcrew's golden/classic years of 2006/2007?

  22. Read lots of top sizing, IRL, pop back & new arrival tips - so I can time that ON/NY border run - from you generous JCAs. But have never posted here before. This G&M story gave another "Canuck" a happy rush so "Hi all!" See points of both the availability (Canadian shipping charges, long delivery times etc.) and exclusivity posts. Think this is similar to Coach, more recently Crate & Barrel, who also did a decent CDN catalogue biz before opening their first B&M here last year. JC are likely seeding the major national papers to create some buzz, and using a well-known figure and retail guru like Heather R. to intro the brand beyond loyalists. I'd guess opening is at least a year away. And like many I do hope JC addresses its inventory and quality control issue along with any international expansion. Didn't they open, try opening a store in Tokyo a while back? And maybe in a while I will get less wound up about all those JC card-holder emails I get even though up here we can't access. I just remember when, after many emails to the co., they finally made Canadian addresses valid for free shipping offers! And as someone who in past has stocked her JC habit in the UK and Venezuela thanks to help from US friends at least they ship here. Many other brands still don't. For those who don't live near Toronto or Vancouver, where a flagship would almost certainly open, hope they open a Canadian distribution centre to help with tax & post. And will keep any future posts shorter gah!

  23. Lands End and Banana Republic do not have distribution centers in Canada, and they are subject to tariffs when they stock their stores here in Canada. This in itself it a big obstacle for these stores, and they have trouble with the bilingualism issues as well. It costs alot of money for a US store to operate in Canada. On the upside the cost for the consumer should be lower, and I would be thankful to be able to return things back to the store rather than shipping them back to the US.

    Canadians can hold J Crew credit cards, if that's what you're referring to. You just have to go to a store in the States and present them with your SIN card.

    Having said that, I've stopped using my J Crew card because it takes forever to process payments originating in Canada, and the late fees I've incurred as a result far outweigh any benefits, in my opinion.

  25. casual-crew Too true, took Crate & Barrel over 4 years between initially scoping out Canada and when Yorkdale opened due in part to labelling/ translation issues, wood product tariffs etc. And was told one reason Lands End operates out of existing Sears B&Ms here was connected to the import/tarrif handling. Miss, thanks for the reminder, just had so many issues with the glacier-paced card billing, getting address changed when moving etc. and fact most of not hefty perks are for B&M users gave up on it.

  27. I think they would do well in Canada. I don't think they can go to the UK (although GAP is there) because there is another preppy retailer in the UK called Crew http://www.crewclothing.co.uk/

    Established in 1993? Must be a euro-jcrew-knockoff. I moved to the US from the UK in 1995 and had never ever heard of them.

    Check out their home page..crewclothing.co.uk there's a real similarity to the JC East of Eden photoshoot/catalog, complete with misty, lush green fields.Too funny.

    Call them! They reverse late fee charges like they're going out of style!
    I'm particular about my finances, so to be dinged for slow postal service/ inability to debit my Cdn bank account, really got to me.
    There eagerness to keep credit consumers by reversing fees at a simple sigh is likely indicative of the blotted US credit market

    but it helps us!
