Love It Or Leave It: Timex Watch For J.Crew

There is an interesting post at Cool Hunting about the "Timex for J.Crew" watch (click here). First, J.Crew offers Rolex watches (click here), now they are offering expensive Timex military watches (Item 10884; $150.00). (Well, "expensive" for Timex watches. ;) )

I am personally a big fan of Timex watches. However, I mostly remember wearing Timex watches in high school (with the different color buttons) because of their affordability and quality, not so much in terms of style. To see any Timex watch costing more than $100 is always a bit surprising for me. :)

What are your thoughts on the Timex for J.Crew watch? Do you think this is a good partnership strategy? Do you think you will purchase the Timex for J.Crew watch? If you already own this watch, please let us know what you think. :)

  1. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I didn't/wouldn't purchase my Rolex from J. Crew and I wouldn't purchase a Timex from them either.

  2. Yeah, I am not really sure why they went with Timex brand after Rolex? Also I don't see why they can't make their own watches if they want to sell watches. It kind of gives J.Crew the feel of a department store.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I like the look of this watch. Since J.Crew is all about style and fashion I can see why they went with a partnership with Timex. Aren't watches somewhat of a fashion item?

We're a funny group. We complain about vintage Rolex watches from J.Crew because they cost too much, now we'll complain about a reasonably priced watch done with Timex.

  4. JCrew Guy in Canada, This is not a reasonably priced Timex...It is way over priced...I just bought my husband a Timex that looks EXACTLY like this and it did not cost near what this one does...just do a little research on Timex watches/styles. Both my husband and I have been wearing them for years in various styles...I own about 10 and my hubby about 15! This one by JCrew is WAY over priced.

  5. i love the new timex/jcrew watch..the vintage look of the watch is great..i cannot wait to purchase this item

  6. I will say that I do love the look of the watch for everyday wear. I am not sure if a guy would wear this watch with a nylon strap to work (with a suit).

Also, I do think this watch is expensive *relative* to other Timex watches (which are typically priced under $100 from what I have seen in stores like Wal-mart, Target, Sears, etc.) I am curious now as to what Timex's average cost is. :)

    ReplyDelete
  7. Timex does sell watches that cost over $200. However, it seems that most are under $100. That being said, I like the look of this watch. But, I don't think I would purchase jewelry from J. Crew because I think fashionable men's jewelry is silly.

    ReplyDelete
  8. This watch is a re-make of a certain style of Timex watch that was quite popular. You could probably get a real vintage one that still looks and works fine for a fraction of the cost. $150 is paying for the J Crew name, not the Timex name.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The watch really doesn't look like anything special to me. The fact that it's J Crew selling a Timex watch does nothing to entice me to buy it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. there is a good discussion of that particular watch at this forum:
    http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/forum/showthread.php?t=86820

personally, i would rather buy a hamilton khaki field watch than a predistressed timex at that price. if i needed another 'daily beater' watch, i could see myself buying the j. crew timex at around $60.

i disagree that carrying other brands makes j. crew feel like a department store. the other brands they carry are *extremely* well-edited...i would much rather buy timex for j. crew than a j. crew branded watch--even at $150. the brooks brothers branded watches are a total bust...if they had partnered with TAG or someone else at that price range, they probably would have done much better.

  11. I think this all comes back to branding/market image. The Rolexes that are offered are vintage, with a look and appeal that is very complimentary to the clothes and other accessories they carry. The Rolexes in the JC catalog are not the flashy diamond encrusted ones, nor the sleek, modern stainless styles. This particular Timex style is offered in a similar vein - probably for the more rugged sportsman who wears his watch while doing his morning crew workout!

It's as if a stylist is your "new best friend" . IMHO, it would be sad to think that one's style is completely dictated by what a catalog puts forth, but JC sure makes it easy! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  12. I forgot to add that I would "leave it", in this particular case -- only because with good shopping skills you could achieve the same look for less. I certainly appreciate JC helping me pair my JC clothing with accessories - it does give me good ideas!

That being said, I did fork out $20 for an expandable band timex on amazon, which I thought was pretty classy looking...gotta love that indiglo!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I am just not quite sure why J.Crew is venturing into watches... especially when customers like us would love to see them do so much more with clothing, right? Also, I can pretty much guarantee you that a watch with J.Crew stamped on it will not be any more likely to make it into my possession collection!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I love watches and this timex is supercool but a bit pricey. Plus, as much as i love J.Crew, I don't see myself coming here for watches.

    ReplyDelete
  15. rather lengthy...

it's nice that jcrew is doing some men's accessories, but I think that what they need to do are some new ideas for men's clothing. all they have every season every year are those pocket tees (or the same pocket tee just w/out pocket). don't get me wrong, i love them- i have them in just about every color, but i would like something new or different so it's not like a jcrew uniform. i have several half zip fleeces and sweaters as well. it is just as if every year they have the EXACT same style and exact same colors... grey, navy, black, green, and maybe an orange thrown in. i did purchase the striped pullover sweater the other day and appreciated how the collar was different. please jcrew more items like this that stand apart!

additionally: i am 6'7" and must always order things online. in stores their pants don't have a long enough inseam and their t-shirts are too short. that might by why I also feel so constricted in jcrew clothing. it would be nice if they offered more tall versions! I'm 6'7" but only about 200lbs so i don't fall into the "big" category

    ReplyDelete
  16. Off topic, but i wanted everyone to know that at my local B&M I purchased the velvet ecole jacket for %40 off the sale price today bringing it down to just $78. Worth the trip if you're looking for this one. Also, there is a secret sale on cashmere tees for $99.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i agree that j.crew's additional offerings are a nice compliment to the clothing collection. perhaps $150 is a bit much, however, for the type of person that doesn't want to make the effort to hunt down a similar one for much less, j.crew makes it easy for them to get the look they want all in one place.

    ReplyDelete
  18. OT, sorry - but someone on here was looking for a GIRAFFEE NECKLACE and I saw one on ebay today.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think this watch looks cheap. Definitely NOT worth $150! Do I even need to say, "leave it"???

    ReplyDelete
  20. THis is OT, but has anybody been able to order an item online from home and get a price to match that of a store? I haven't done that for a while now, and just tried, but CS refused to do it. They told me I had to be at a red phone to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. OT - If anyone was looking at the Daisy Eyelet Jacket that has been available final sale on and off for the last two weeks, GET IT. I received mine yesterday and so love it. Can't wait for next srping or summer to wear it. The fit is tts and the big buttons with the eyelet perfectly centered on them are especially eye catching. Between that and my cashmere hacking jacket I have had really great luck lately.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Leave it. A definite leave it. J.Crew's recent choices in joint ventures with other manufacturers have really appeared schizophrenic and disorganized to me. I just don't get it (and this is why I'm not a stylist.) But I am a customer, and I say, "no way!" Timex is well-known in watches, clearly. But their name, IMHO, brings nothing to J.Crew; no obvious win-win here.

  23. I don't think this watch looked that special.

If J Crew wants to branch into something, how about nightie (besides those flannel pants) and intimate garments?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Although I won't be purchasing this watch, I like J.Crew's philosophy when it comes to partnering with other companies for certain items. They do it with the idea that if another company is already awesome at something, why try to copy or top them? This is why we see J.Crew exclusive takes on Converse Jack Purcell sneakers, Red Wing boots and yes, Timex watches.

It's refreshing to see a still relatively young company cooperating with and paying tribute to time-honored companies who are among the best at what they do, when so much of the apparel industry is about ripping off and one-upping.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think you have a point, mad about madras. It could be an expensive tribute to the brands and products many of us remember from times gone by. Except that then, they didn't cost so much! Alexis, I'm with you. If I want a Timex, I'll go to Target.

  26. Will the website be updated today with NEW Oct. stuff????

    ReplyDelete
  27. New sale stuff on the website:)

  28. LOVE IT. Its a TIMEX and its awesome looking... but an Orvis watch is like 40.00 and looks the same and just as classic.

  29. I ordered the Watercolor Floral Madison Dress this morning. I have been looking at it awhile and this morning it was marked to $39.99. Does anyone have this dress and if so do you like it? I bought the deep atlantic color.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anon, I hope you like the madison dress! I looked at it, but was put off by the low back (I have to wear a bra, and I hate having to wear special-fit ones). You certainly got a great price on it :-)

It seems J.Crew is just going to continue this final sale interminably. Their loss - if I can't try an item with the safety of returning, I'm not buying.

    ReplyDelete
  31. OT: The sale section has been updated and I received an e-mail from J. Crew announcing the update. There are a few new things but also some further price reductions on items that have been in final sale for a while. (If only there were an extra percent off too.)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, I am not ordering if the final sale continues...If I can't try things on forget it...I think this must be a LONG term thing they are trying...does a JCrew employee know??? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  33. FYI - the Lucille coat is now on the sale page for $189. Sorry if this has been mentioned already.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Mad about Madras: I really like how you put it all together. J.Crew is definitely working with these companies as it tries to sell more than a line of clothing. I think J.Crew is trying to sell a mood or feeling that it's clothing evokes. And it seems to be quite timely; influences from Mad Men and other sources are all coming together as American sportswear with an early 60s feel is the strong look in fashion today.

    ReplyDelete
  35. OT-
Stores have dropped to only 20% off sale items starting today. IT was 40% yesterday and of course items that have been ADDED to the site today one could only price match for 20% off. Many of which are items from LAST YEAR! Ugh--I was so bummed. They had me for yet another order (it seems it's every day or every other these days!) had they kept it at 40% off. Whatta ya gonna do--I guess hold out for another additional 40% sale:)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sorry for OT, but J.Crew added some new items to sale section:) - including bags and shoses.

    ReplyDelete
  37. covert5,
How are you getting the price match? The rep I spoke with last night would not do a price match at 40% off b/c I wasn't calling from a red phone.....
    Thanks:)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anon at 9:49AM: Thanks for the update on the Lucille! I'll save $50 at this new price. Thank goodness it didn't get cool enough for me to be tempted to take the tags off my non-sale one... :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. How soon after placing an order are people noticing items dropping off/being cancelled from their order?

I was told there is only a 50-50 chance I will get the skirt I ordered this morning....really bummed...I liked the old way of ordering much better when you got your stuff 99% of the time!

    ReplyDelete
  40. anon @ 9:49: I am debating on getting the Orange even though I already have the Spicy Mustard color...I love it that much! Thanks for letting us know that it is on sale. :)

FFM: Did you see that the Orange Lucille is now on sale? I know that we discussed it at one point. :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I so wish the lucille came in navy, or any color I could wear. I just love the shape and fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  42. to the anon who keeps asking when the new October stuff will be on the website - the last update WAS the October rollout. The new November rollout will not be on the website until late October. There is typically only one update per month.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Off topic, but Ann Taylor is now offering Style Rewards, 5 points foe every $1 spent ay AT or Loft, using their card. Every 2,000 points ($400) earns you a $20 reward card. Considering how much $$$$ I spend there, I'm glad to be earning rewards! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. OK. I guess I got confused b/c people were talking about getting new stuff in the stores today; thanks for clearing that up for me:) I guess they were just really early with the Oct. stuff then....

I would love the Lucille in another color too...also, maybe the orange but heard it is too bright...it would be so pretty in a deep, russet, fall orange...not day glo practically...

    ReplyDelete
  45. hey jcrewjunkie! I am considering the lucille, and know you have it. Did you size up or was it true to size? I've been having lots of issues with jcrew sizing lately, and have sized down in the wool fiona and the andrea. But I'm not sure I should for this as it's a coat!

    TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  46. this is OT, but i really love my outfit today. jcrew dk clouse vintage fleece boatneck top, white tank underneath (the flowy kind), jeans and the jcrew glass beaded ribbon necklace in dk cloud.

    ReplyDelete
  47. kater: I got the size 0 and would have loved it if they would have made a 2P! If anything, I would say size DOWN since the arms are just a tad long on me and the shoulders just a tad loose (shouldn't be a problem once I put a sweater on). Hope this helps! :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. anon @ 1:47: Your outfit sounds absolutely lovely!! Isn't it a wonderful feeling when you know you look great? :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I thought I would share what the CS rep at my local JC said - I was returning my Lucille (to get one on-line for less) and she tried it on :) and said, "This is such a classic -- sometimes items come out and it's nice, but the Lucille is so unique..." She's getting one in a 6 LOL!

kater: not jcrewjunkie, but I find that the Lucille runs a little large. I have broad shoulders and I need an 8, but if I had normal shoulders, the 6 would fit me fine, and I'm never a 6!

My personal thought is that there are enough Lucilles in both colors to hold off a little longer - possibly for the next 20% off final price. There are so many in stock (thanks to whomever gave that tip for checking stock!)...

And to share my final bargain: I picked up two of the Marcella blouses in-store for $19.99, less 20% (yes, covert5 was absolutely right - most items are back to only 20% off, the exception being some cords and jeans still at 40%)! The colors they had on sale at $19.99 were ivory (lots) and honey glaze (12 and 4, I think?) at the Portland (OR)Pioneer Place store.

    ReplyDelete
  50. kater: I have the mustard Lucille and sized down. It's really a lot of coat so I took a 0 in it. (I'm usually a 4P and took a 2R in the Andrea) HTH!

    ReplyDelete
  51. thanks everyone for the lucille input! I'll definitely size down!

audball: thanks for letting me know there are a lot in stock. That is really helpful, as my local stores carry them too, so I should absolutely be able to wait it out for a better deal!

    ReplyDelete
  52. kater: you're welcome :) - but I can't take the credit...another aficionada mentioned that when you go to "checkout" online, put an insane quantity in the quantity field. The system will then reload with the maximum number of items they do have in stock!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I love the styling of the Lucille but the colors are just awful! Looks like icky 70's bathroom/kitchen colors...If only they came in other, pretty colors...

    ReplyDelete
  54. audball - that is the coolest thing ever!!!! I must have missed it before, but who ever figured this out - THANK YOU!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. my shopping cart total is now $45,619.22 from checking inventories!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I know this has been discussed before but can someone please help? What does released mean when you place an online order? I haven't ordered in a long time b/c of the downgrade...will I get everything if it says released? Thanks:)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Haha Kater!!! That is INSANE! OH MY GOODNESS! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  58. blumre: I know!!! It's pretty fun though! what does everyone think the magic number is in terms of having to order when it hits that number or it will sell out????

    ReplyDelete
  59. oh gosh i have no clue but I doubt they have ever had anyone order $45K worth of stuff online before!

How much are you up to now? Are you still going?

    ReplyDelete
  60. 66,291.32 - and still going!

although I need to do some work! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  61. To Anonymous 2:34, Released means the order is left jcrew's front offices (such as customer service) to its back offices ( such as warehouse). It still can be canceled until it is completed.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have been watching a sweater using this method and when it got to 10 today I ordered it even though it wasn't on sale...but I got my educator's discount and free shipping:) so my magic number is 10

    ReplyDelete
  63. LOL!!! Kater you are ridiculous!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anony@2:41 Thank you for your reply:)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Does anyone here own the Matchstick Jeans from the current season? Do I have to size up? Thanks for any help!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. blumre: I know! But it's kinda fun to see what is selling well, and what isn't!

anon - thanks for the tip about ten! I think that is a good number to go by, especially if the item is catalog online!

things that still have 99 (the highest number you can enter for quantity): lots of the lydia blouses, and some of the tartines, both the cardigan and crew versions. Looks like I'm definitely waiting for sale for those!

    ReplyDelete
  67. "catalog/online only" - whoops!

    ReplyDelete
  68. About the amount left in stock I figured this out but use it only as a guide, anything 25 or less I would order, because you do not know when JC updated their systems and if that includes orders from the red phone.

So far it has worked for me. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  69. actually, I think it's pretty "real time" - while I've been playing with it, things have been deleted and the quantity has gone down...

not that I don't agree that you have to be wary of it though. It's definitely not fool proof, but is a fun tool...:)

    ReplyDelete
  70. kater, Yes, the sweater I was watching was an online only one...my guideline was 10 b/c of this online only thing....I am watching 3 other items and they seem to go down only 1 or 2 a day and both are at 33 and 27 right now...so no massive jump in a week's time...so no hurry...they are not online only though but still going with my 10ish rule.

    ReplyDelete
  71. anon 2:41 Released means that the item is released to the warehouse that is what CS told me when I asked. As for getting the items that depends on the inventory left in stock. Hopefully you will receive everything that you have ordered.

    ReplyDelete
  72. casual-crew: Thank you!! I wanted to give credit where credit was due! :)

I'm sure it's not fool-proof, but it certainly is a nice guide!

    ReplyDelete
  73. and of course casual crew - thank you for sharing this with us! It really is fab. We all owe you big...:)

I must stop and do some work!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I normally don't like to take credit but since you are discussing the number, I thought I add my 2 cents.

I almost lost an item last weekend on the FS, I ordered at 25, and they only got around filling my order yesterday I thought I lost it so to leave ordering for items 10 or less is risky!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I ordered two items on Friday with only 1 left of each in stock and I got them both today~ yeah!

    ReplyDelete
  76. The sweaters I were watching were cashmere collection pieces so I wasn't worried about them being gone at 10...there weren't that many to begin with and they were full price...I am talking about watching for 10 on full priced items...not FS. I don't shop FS at all...not worth the risk. I use my educator's discount so that is enough for me:) and I usually get the free shipping too:)

    ReplyDelete
  77. I am transfixed by the way to check inventory. The other night my husband came in and almost passed out when he saw the $$$ total from the items in my shopping cart! LOL. Thanks to whomever gave us this unique and wonderful way to check inventory!

weab: You have the Lucille in Spicy Mustard? I can't believe all the things we have the same! Don't we just have such wonderful taste? :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. Oh my goodness this quick inventory check thing is SOOO cool!!! I had never heard of this before! Thanks for the tip everyone! Now I know if I need to act fast or if I can wait it out. AWESOME!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. jcrewjunkie: we do have fabulous taste! :) I guess we're "cyber-twins"!LOL!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. it's so funny, because I think we each have a cyber-twin. I'm pretty sure mine are caw and vivian!

  81. RE: Anonymous at 9:46 AM:
I'm an associate, and I have been told that the final sale policy is more or less going to be a permanent thing. I believe (and sincerely hope) that it will be suspended for holiday, as obviously gifts + final sale doesn't work very well. I can't speak for the website, but I would imagine that after holiday, both the stores and website will keep this policy for awhile, if not permanently. Disclaimer: this is what I have been told my management, but I (and they) could always be wrong. And before you ask, I'm not sure why they do it. It is an annoyance to us also because people get upset at us all day when we break the news to them. Just know that most of us aren't fans, either.

    ReplyDelete
  82. OT-
to elucidate briefly on on-line ordering and educator's discount. In a past, after items were ordered using whatever code ( free ship, additional %off, final sale, did not matter), I used to send an email to Jcrew from my.edu address and 15% off has been applied to my JC card after 5-7 days, no questions asked. Apprently, the policy had been changed and I mean, truly changed. I was denied additional discount on recent 20% off final sale ( although I have paid full shipping, and some items were shortshipped- AGAIN!).When I sent 2nd email asking fro an explanation, here is the response I got:

"We offer our very deepest and most profound apologies for the
inconvenience and frustration you, and far too many of our other
customers, are experiencing as a result of our transition to new systems
for our Ordering, website, and Distribution systems at the end of June.
This is certainly not the manner in which we would prefer to conduct the
    business of J.Crew.

With this change over at the end of June, the guidelines for how we were
able to apply offers was altered to adhear to the "cannot be combined
with other offers" terms that accompany all of our promotional offers.

Our IT team is hard at work to correct the existing system issues. This
has been a professional embarrassment, but we are getting the problems
fixed and hope to be back in stride in the very near future. Your
patience and patronage is greatly appreciated during this transition.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

    Sincerely,

    David "

    So,for those
ordering and hoping for an additional 15% off, please, beware: discount no more. J crew is really sticking to the guns with the new policy.Sad, but I guess fair to those who cannot use discount at all.
Now, if they start enforcing same policy in stores, I will be really really royally mad!

    ReplyDelete
  83. To anonymous at 2:42 PM....How did you get both the educator's discount AND free shipping? I have to struggle through emails to do that. The emails go back and forth with JC saying "you can't use two codes/offers"...and I reply the educ. disct. is not a code or temporary offer,..and then they FINALLY promise to do both.

    Was it easy for you??

    Thanks.
    SuzQ

    ReplyDelete
  84. Salstena, I have an email from JCrew dated 9/7 that states the exact opposite..that the educator's discount can be combined with one other promotion or discount. In fact, when ordering today I quoted the email/letter as the JCrew employee told me if ever questioned and the CS rep did give it to me. However, I will not gamble with sending an email...I either order on the phone and insure it will be applied.

    ReplyDelete
  85. SuzQ, I hope my last post answers your question too:)

    ReplyDelete
  86. I want to give a positive plug for J Crew here (not that it needs it, but just to point out something that I have been very pleased with recently!) I have NEVER had trouble returning (via the website) FS items that I have truly had a problem with. J Crew has been MOST GRACIOUS about issuing a gift card when I return an item from FS that is not to my satisfaction. While I do not do this often, I am not hesitant to request a gift card for something that I simply refuse to keep.

    ReplyDelete
  87. That's too bad if the final sale is permanent. I think it's a very stupid and ultimately self-defeating policy on the part of J.Crew, because I know I'm not the only one who won't buy anything off final sale. It absolutely should not be a hassle to return something that doesn't fit, or something that's of inferior quality, or something that doesn't match what it was bought for - or for any reason, actually.

There isn't another store I shop at that has this policy. One of the reasons I love Nordstrom's is that their unqualified return policy. To me, it proves the company stands behind what it sells.

J.Crew really has depreciated in my esteem from last fall/winter/holiday to now. Instead of offering charming and unique pieces at reasonable, if somewhat high, prices, and at least a common chance to buy something on a regular sale, now they're offering unique items at ridiculous prices, complete with a never-ending final sale.

I'll still buy from them when something really appeals to me, but I've spent a fraction this fall compared to what I did last fall.

    ReplyDelete
  88. la belle helene,
I agree completely:) I have only bought 3 items in Aug. and 2 items in Sept. and this is WAY less than I have ever bought from JCrew in the past 4 1/2 years! I would buy 5-10 items a week:)

    ReplyDelete
  89. Many thanks to the JCrew employee who answered my question:)

    ReplyDelete
  90. The b&m by my workplace still had 50% off today...I guess they didn't get the memo!

  91. weab: Do you have either the Dream Open Cardi in Heather Graphite or the Cashmere Butterfield Sweater in Heather Silver? How do they fit? Also, how does your Double Serge Tuesday Trench fit? 93. Thanks for the tip regarding inventory. I just called CS and spoke to Tracey (very helpful). I asked measurements on two sweaters.

Anyway, I am interested in the cashmere academy cardigan, but it is sold out in XL and I was wondering if a L would work. I can wear the featherweight merino cardigan in a L. Does anyone know how the cashmere academy cardigan fits? According the the board's inventory control, there are 35 left (don't want to miss if I can help it).

I asked Tracey about the final sale during the holidays, and she said it would not be a problem. You would need to mention that it is a gift when you order so they can put notes in the order, but no big deal.

Thanks for this blog. Learn something new here everyday.

  94. slastena: I emailed Monday evening and asked about getting my teacher discount on two recent orders that I had received. I received a quick response telling my that they would gladly credit my card with the 2 discounts. So, how "new" is this policy? The last 3 orders that I've called in, I've been told that I can only use 1 discount. However, I was able to get the 2nd discount via email. I wonder if it just depends on who answers the phone and/or email?

  95. jcrewjunkie: I'm almost embarrassed to admit this but yes, the silver butterfield should be arriving any minute...and the dream open cardi should arrive tomorrow...:O I'll be sure to post on sizing once they arrive!

As for the Tuesday Trench, I have it in a petite 2. It fits like a glove. I mean it's perfect, almost like it was tailor made just for me! :) I love it!

I ordered a small in both the sweaters so we'll see how they work out. My fear is that they'll run big. But from previous posts, I think the butterfield ran pretty true...we'll see! :) HTH!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Maybe there is only 1 space in their computer system to enter 1code, and when you email them after the order is placed then they are able to enter the additional discount.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I just want to add that email used to work for me with my student discount code on top of other %'s off, and on sunday I was told they were not going to combine them any more. I complained and they adjusted it, but said it was a one time courtesy. I don't know what's going on with the inconsistency, but I'm trying to train myself not to "count" on combining discounts anymore...

  98. I'd love to see J.Crew's books for the past three months. Can't imagine it's not bad news for them, given overall economic chaos on top of a disastrous website change.

I'm sitting here on a wonderfully cool fall day, drinking a cup of tea and paging through .... last fall's September catalogue :-) Ahh, the memories.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I sent two emails lately end Aug./Begin Sept. as was told they could not combine my 15% off FALL with my educator's discount. I sent 2 emails and got to No's. The 3rd email I got a "yes". Once again...more of JCrew's inconsistencies...Also, I tried to phone in an order just today...first rep would not combine free shipping discount with educator's discount (I had pushed option 2) and the second lady did with a little coaxing...Crazy...

    ReplyDelete
  100. I would LOVE to see the last Fall catalog everyone speaks of (it was prior to my returned love to J Crew--thank GOD as my CC has smoke and flames shooting out of it since this past Spring/Summer/Fall:)

Is there ANYWHERE to view it? I only find older catalogs on google.

  101. math teacher: Went to the Charleston b&m. Not much on sale, that wasn't there before. I did get the Marcella in Nantucket Fog. I almost missed it, because that and white were on sale, but not with the other sale items. I also got the Boatneck city tee, which is actually more the weight of a sweatshirt. I bought the color Eggplant, which I think is sold out online.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Math teacher:
it was exactly like that for me before. It worked up to my most recent order. This time experience is similar to Kater's:first response was no, I sent 2nd email pointing out inconsistencies, and got 2nd reply still stating:sorry, no. Two different people replied, so I guess J crew is really trying to enforce the "new"policy. I sent 3d email ( not giving up yet), so we will see.:)

    ReplyDelete
  103. hey math teacher and leaderboys: you guys are always raving about the charleston b&m. Are they carrying the lucille coat in orange by any chance? I'm planning to wait for another markdown on this one, but want to have some stores lined-up to call in case it sells out...and since they are so nice there...;)

    ReplyDelete
  104. JC makes more money off FS, since you ladies can't try and buy and return it at your disposal. It helps keep their books moving forward, rather than overwhelmed w/unwanted merchandise. Sucks, but policy is policy!

  105. Anonymous @ 8:55 am - I tried on the Watercolor Floral Madison Dress in the Deep Atlantic and I liked it. I just couldn't see where I'd wear it due to my lifestyle not to mention that I have at least 10 dresses I've never worn. Although you could wear a cardi over it quite easily for a different look. And it might even work w/a tissue turtleneck. Whatever you do w/it, you got a great price!

  106. Does anyone have the Penelope mary janes (item 94670)? Do they run true to size? They are final sale now and I would like to get some insight into fit, etc., since they cannot be returned.

    ReplyDelete
  107. kater: We get very few coats and jackets. I would LOVE to try the lucille on, but we didn't get it. It's not a very big store, and caters to the college crowd that's right around the corner.

  109. Gigiofca:
how is the fit on that dress? I really like it , but never had a chance to try it on. Is is TTS? I am rather large on top. With polka-sot rosette dress I had to up-size to 6 ( I am normally 4) to accomodate for that.

    ReplyDelete
  110. This might be a little off topic ... but does anybody know when the vintage flower pins are going to be up on the website?? I've been waiting to buy them since I got the catalogue, but so far no luck.

    ReplyDelete
  111. kater: the weather here is suppose to be in the 70's tomorrow, so I'm going to wear my vest. :) I know I won't get too hot in my classroom (always cold!), but it might be a little warm in my car after school. I don't care, I've been going crazy waiting to wear it. :D

    ReplyDelete
  112. MAN math teacher! I was looking forward to talking to billy...:) my b&m had it, but is now out of the size I think I need. so I need the price to go down again before I can justify buying something I don't know if I will like!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Oh how I wish the lucille came in violet or iris or azalea...I'd be so into it in any of those colors. I just can't picture myself wearing the orange or yellow, even as much as I like the style.

Kater - what color are you getting?

    ReplyDelete
  114. kater: I'm sorry - maybe if you find a store that does have your size, they can include a note that says you can return it if it doesn't fit? And, Billy is great - sorry you missed a chance to talk to him. Maybe another time. :P

    ReplyDelete
  115. Anony@5:43...there is a post on this site about the flower pins...they are sold out.

    ReplyDelete
  116. math teacher: you know there will be another time, as I am completely and utterly OBSESSED!

la belle: I was thinking the orange. I've seen it in person, and actually like the color. But dumb me didn't try it on! Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  117. la belle helene: I think you hit the nail on the head, high inventory effects their bottom line. Inventories are high (as mentioned in their last shareholders meeting), therefore final sale is permanent. Boo to fs!

  118. to anon at 5:14: i just got the academy cardigan today! i am normally an xs, and some styles, like the merino v-neck are even sometimes a bit large on me, particularly in the waist and under the arms. all in all, i would say that is is pretty true to size. it has a very tailored fit and hugs me very nicely. seems to be more fitted than other cardigans i've gotten from them, but that could just be me. i'll see if the fit is any different after i wear it a few times, i have bad luck with j. crew clothes stretching out a lot. it is very comfortable and WARM!! the material is very heavy and perfect for winter. i absolutely love it. it was way too expensive, but since i am not getting a coat this year it is going to be my big splurge.

    ReplyDelete
  119. kater: I am with math teacher. Darn it I am going to wear fall clothes tomorrow!! Even my 4 year old son insisted on wearing a heavy sweatshirt jacket, even though it was pushing 85 degree today!

Anyway, a question, can a store ship something if it is in stock. I know that Talbots does this.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Kater,
I know that feeling - I wish my store carried everything, so I could try anything on I fancied and thus know what size to take if I find it on a great sale. Like with the madison floral dress - not going to buy it without knowing how it fits me (and I won't rely on measurements doled out over the phone, because they're not a tell-all), since I can't return it.

    ReplyDelete
  121. As for the Timex...I would NOT purchase one at this price...there is a similar one available online for $29.95 seen Here . I know it has a resin case, but is it really worth $120 more for stainless steel?

    ReplyDelete
  122. math teacher: I sent you an email...be sure to check it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  123. leaderboys: yes a store can and will ship an item. I got the paintbrush belle skirt from NY and the canvas fiona from Arizona! I paid shipping both times, although others on here have gotten free shipping.

kater: I say, if you want the coat that badly, call around and find a store that has it in your size and ask that they include a note. If you have an sa that you know pretty well, could they call for you? I love the coat, but not sure how much use I would get out of it here in SC. So, it would have to get a bigger markdown before I would order it. I also LOVE the purple peacoat, but again, it wouldn't get much wear here. So, only cheap coats for me. :)

    ReplyDelete
  124. ffm: I will reply before the evening is out. Promise. :)

    ReplyDelete
  125. math teacher: I'm not sure if I want it THAT badly...:) I think part of my obsession is coming from the fact that I've spend the day editing a paper, and would rather do anything else than try to cut sentences here and there!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Anon 8:55: I have the watercolor Madison in the deep atlantic color too, and I love it! I love the print and the deep blue and black, and the shape is very grown up and classic; the material is kind of silky and it's lined so it feels like it should be more than what I paid for it (which was like $40). I had no problems with the neck or the back, it wasn't too low on me. I don't know about your body type, but I felt like the cut was kind of narrow at the waist/hips. (It's probably because the shape is more streamline than A-lined.) I had to size up because my normal size, with the slant of the pockets, emphasized my problem area, which was my stomach. I hope you enjoy it!

    ReplyDelete
  127. WOW. I guess I totally missed the boat on the flower pins. I never even saw them go online. Thanks ... sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  128. anon at 6:06 - I think many of us feel that way. I never saw them online either. Seems bush-league on J.Crew's part to feature items so heavily in a catalogue and then have so few available.

I've read the prices were around $80 to $125 and up, so I doubt I'd have bought one anyway because I can find nicer ones locally for far less money. But I would have liked to be able to view them, at least.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Slastena - I am a 34C and felt that the fit was TTS. I agree about the bra issue. It was a little bit low. Sometimes you're just not in the mood to find one that works. dress? I really like it , but never had a chance to try it on. Is is TTS? I have the polka-sot rosette dress and also got a 6. I was so surprised it fit. It hink the cuts look the same, but the rosette ran a little bigger, imo.

Anonymous @ 6:06p - Yep, no flower pins. Some of the crafty jcrew aficionadas will be attempting to diy. You might want to join in. ;-)

  130. kater: I completely understand. Sometimes, we just have to concentrate on something else. :)

  131. Oh -- did anyone ever order & try on the GEORGIA DRESS?

    ReplyDelete
  132. gigiofca, hah, that's funny, I was just thinking of that dress! I don't like that it's unlined - I wonder if that's behind the drastic markdown? I've never seen it in a store, so I have no idea as to quality/fit...

    ReplyDelete
  133. La Belle Helene - An aficionada asked a CS rep about it and was told it's sheer. I was dressed in slips, tights and patent leather mary janes on Sundays so I'm not scurred of wearing a slip. *lol* I'm thinking it could so cute with a slip underneath for the sheerness and a cardi over it. I'm thinking about getting it in Fog.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Oops -- The color is grey mis. Fog, grey mist...whatever. I'm a big fan of the cardi over a dress. I got the black silk dress w/the big circles and a cardi takes the punch out of the circles for a small woman like moi. And back to the Georgia -- I think you need a slip underneath if you want to wear tights or else you'd have a static cling problem.

    ReplyDelete
  135. gigiofca,
I'm fine with wearing a slip under a dress or skirt, too. Take a look at the second picture of the model wearing the georgia - that's a lot of bunching in the bum area.

  136. Off Topic again:
just wanted to post a quick review on a coveted Platinum Tweed sheath dress. I missed on the Oatmeal option and almost missed this one. It came out and was sold out in less then a week. I really liked the look of it and although it is pricey, I convinced myself it would be a great investment piece.:) By the time I was ready to purchase, only size 6 was in stock, so I ordered it and it came yesterday. Imagine my excitement!
Presentation- great!: came in box, neatly wrapped , with satin bow on top, garment bag inside.

Fit: I am weird with dresses, go from 4 to 6 depending on the bust cut. In this type of style ( sheath) , I am usually 6. Fit was good on the bust, but too bulky on the waist area and weirdly pouched on a back. Almost looked like I had a padding on the bum ( fabric was sticking out stiffly from behind despite my numerous attempts at smoothing)

Fabric: that what's killed the joy for me! Material is stiff and unbearably itchy. It is fully lined, but still touches the skin on the shoulders and at the neckline. I am not sensitive type, at all. I wear wool, cashmere, anything- no problems. This one I could not tolerate though. Fabric weave also was on a rougher side, I expected intricate weave, instead it was losely woven and not as pretty as in the picture.

Unfortunately, this dress is going back. After so much trouble of getting it. Oh, well!

    ReplyDelete
  137. Thanks for the insightful review, Slastena - although I'm sorry it was such a disappointment!

    ReplyDelete
  138. La belle helene:
in case someone wss upset not getting the dress, they can sleep peacefully now.LOL! :)

    ReplyDelete
  139. La Belle Helene - You are right. Quite a bit of bunching. I think if I order it I will ask the CS to not put it as FS. I still like the grey mist. The bright blue is pretty, but a lighter color would show more flaws. Maybe I can't miss with black. Just talking out loud. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  140. gigiofca,
I like the grey color, too - it's something different, and I'd opt for that over black just because black dreses are so preponderant. I like the blue, too, but that seems to show the bunching most of all.

I just wonder why J.Crew didn't spring for having it lined. Geez, it's a sheath - that's a very simple lining. Especially considering the starting price, I really think it should have been lined.

By the way, is your name a reference to Gigi, the wonderful movie with Leslie Caron? I love it.

    ReplyDelete
  141. jcrewjunkie: I just received the butterfield and I find it pretty tts, sleeve length is fine. But it's a little shorter than I would like as others mentioned. Unfortunately, it's not a LOVE for me so it may be going back...we'll see if it grows on me over the next few days. :)

    ReplyDelete
  142. la belle -- I wish the story about my board name was as beautiful as the movie. It came about because of a cute little poodle next door to my ILs. MIL always had funny stories about Gigi and was very sure to enunciated the French pronunciation of her name. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  143. To gigiofca: I received the Georgia dress today in the grey mist color. It is not lined and I will wear a slip underneath it. It isn't totally see-through. The fit was pretty TTS, I ordered a 4. It fits slim thru the thighs, but overall its a cute dress for $40! (I got it with the 20% off.) It will look cute with a cardigan. I'm sure the darker colors are not as sheer. Hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  144. Anonymous @7:20p - Yay! *claps hands* Thanks so much for chiming in. I really like the grey mist and figure one can always find a black dress so I can pass on black. I'm going to go for it.

I am usually a 4, but am a 34C. What's your chest size, if you don't mind my asking? My hips are straight, so hopefully the thigh area will be ok, but I wonder about the chest.

    ReplyDelete
  145. weab, what are you going to do with an uber-thick cashmere sweater in TX???

    ReplyDelete
  146. to gigiofca:

I am a 32C and it fit fine across the chest.

I will say that the way they ship this dress is not good - it is folded in half longways and draped over a hanger and then folded into the box. When i tried it on it had a very prominent fold right down the center and it will need a really good steaming to get it out!!

    ReplyDelete
  147. anon @ 7:30: another one of my concerns exactly! but you'd be surprised, it gets chilly down here in the south and we southerners can't handle it once it gets below 70 degrees! :)

    ReplyDelete
  148. anon @ 7:37 - Thanks so much! I just ordered the grey mist in a 5. I also got the city-fit stretch chino café capri in black (89706), the Marcella silk blouse in moss (95697) and the Baird McNutt linen jacket in yellow (93765). I will have all colors in the Baird McNutt. Not sure that's something to divulge, but the cut of it is so great for me. Also -- was enabled by the fact that I saw it on a Today show reporter in yellow. Had to have! I'm gushing. Excited about my new order. Hopefully it will come next week when DH is out of town.

My CS was Adelaide and she was sooooo fabulous! She is into clothes just as much as we all are and I had so much fun w/her on the phone.

  149. weab: Mine should be here tomorrow so I'll let you know what I think as well. Keep me posted as to what you decide.

  150. Tp continue on my previously posted saga, I just got 3d reply from J crew: yes, they will add educator's discount to EXRA20 sale for "all my troubles".
    Wow, it took some perseverance.
Not sure it was worth all the time and effort.

    ReplyDelete
  151. jcrewjunkie, please do! I'd love to hear your thoughts!

    ReplyDelete
  152. slastena! I can NOT believe you had to go through all that to get an OK! That is ridiculous! They say it's "discretionary" but I will never understand how they can make a "policy" "discretionary"...isn't that a huge contradiction!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  153. Sally (weab):
    yes, indeed.:(
I asked CS to pass may email to supervisors. It's a high time for J Crew to revisit outdated policies on non-stackable codes, final sales and outrageous shipping costs.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Slastena, Congrats on getting the discount! What did you say in your 3rd email that finally made the difference? Just wondering b/c I am having the same issues with a recent order getting my educator's discount. Thanks;)

    ReplyDelete
  155. Anon:
I am sorry, I just saw your comment.
I pointed that 1) educator's discount is not really a promo, but a permanent disocunt which should be honored since they opted to offer it in a first palce, 2) I was specificaly told over the phone to send an email from my. edu account for "verification purposes", 3) I had a problem with a last order ( again! the cancelled on me witout notice), 4) I asked to forward my complain to supervisor.

So,as you can see it did take a bit of effort. I believe, it should not be such a hassle.

  157. Nice watch! the simple vintage design and the nato strap- awesome. Overpriced? well that's something that needs to be fixed.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Jumping in here really late, but anyway, I bought a very similar version of the J. Crew Timex for $25 in an Army base uniform retail shop (an AAFEES store, where active duty soldiers buy their uniforms, not an army surplus store). The difference as far as I can tell is that the $25 watch is not distressed and has slightly different hands. That's all. The J. Crew watch is ridiculously overpriced.

    ReplyDelete
  159. I didn't know that this model was created for J.Crew ;)

    ReplyDelete
  160. Timex watches are a class apart. I've been buying Timex watches for many years now. With each new model, they incorporate a new feature. Though some might find the brand a bit expensive than other brands. But Timex watches are worth the price. You can find an excellent collection of Timex watches at the nearest Kamal Store around you or visit their website. Do a thorough search on "Timex watch for men price" and buy one from the Kamal Watch store at your desired budget.
