I have been lusting after this jacket for some time. I actually was contemplating purchasing it at full price. (To be honest, I was surprised to see it being offered at $98 to begin with. Most of J.Crew's jackets seem to be in the $100-$200 regular price range.) When the jacket was on promotion, I gave in and got this jacket in british khaki (although I was strongly considering the bright rhubarb as well- and who knows- I still might!) ;)
This jacket is gorgeous and I am really happy with the purchase. First, sizing. I ordered a size 0 (I am normally a size 0-2). The size 0 could be a little bit more fitted on me (although it really is minimal). Second, the entire jacket is lined. I don't know why the website mentions the "bodice is lined" only, as the sleeves are lined as well. Third, the pockets. Although the jacket has faux patch pockets, the real pockets are cleverly hidden on the vertical seems of the front jacket. (Which makes putting your hands in the pockets a lot more convenient.) Fourth, I love the inverted back pleats on the jacket. They really add that feminine touch on such a lovely jacket. Fifth, the buttons. (I have a thing about buttons. I just like the extra detail that they bring to clothes.) This jacket has really great round buttons that are super cute! Overall, I really do like this jacket and think it is definitely worth purchasing.What are your thoughts on the Chino Cooper Jacket? Have you tried this jacket on? Would you love it or leave it? Are you planning to purchase one? If you already own this jacket, please let us know what your review is.
Alexis, i am so glad you like your purchase. I have been thinking about this jacket since i saw it posted. It seems very cute and from your review, true to size. Both colors appeal to me, the rhubarb even more so. I wondered about the material, sort of a shiny cotton or distressed? Also, I noticed the high waist. With the pleats, how does the back rest? Does it fall gently or potentially protrude if you have a bit of an ample backside (like me)? :)
ReplyDeletealexis: i have been eyeing this jacket for a while too but haven't bought it since i have a kenneth cole one from a few years ago that is similar. but it sounds like this is a great classic jacket that has wonderful details...it's great to hear that the sleeves are lined too! do you remember jcrew's chino colette jacket? it also was fully lined and has great details. i have it in navy and it's one of my favorites :)
ReplyDeleteI love this jacket. I have it in the Bright Rhubarb and think it is so cute with jeans and navy. I agree that the quality is excellent for the price (that is compared to other J. Crew prices). I don't think it protrudes at all, and I also have an ample backside. I ordered a six and I am typically a six or 8P, so I find it true to size. The rhubarb is not shiny (it is a little less color drenched than the rhubarb belle skirt if you have seen that).

I like the jacket and I love the back detailing--however, how about wash and ironing care with all those pleats?...that is what is keeping me from this jacket. (plus, I really like a few other wool ones better)

CCBMUM: I have the chino Colette in tan, navy, and the orange/red color (can't remember what they called their orange/red that year?) It is super cute!
I also have the ruffle trimmed one in tan from last year with the fance tan buttons and the tan chino (Liana??) with the silky tie and ribbon front.
JCrew makes nice jackets...
Very cute, very flattering silhouette, and a good price, too, particularly for a lined jacket!
ReplyDeleteI had the Colette as well (it's on loan to my sister which is where all my JC items go that I'm not sure I want to get rid of) and thought that was a great jacket (and fully lined, hello!) as well. The red that year was "Strawberry Ice", I believe.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the awesome review, Alexis! It is a very cute jacket, that's for sure. I don't know what's up with them not lining some or all of their jackets (read: Tuesday Trench), especially at the prices they charge for them. If nothing else, the lining just looks better!

Yes, about the cotton jackets needing to be lined! I would have really like a lining at least in the body of the Fiona madras jacket.....esp. for the price which I think was $150?
ReplyDeleteCleo26: I know what you mean about the ruhbarb color- it is a very pretty shade. (I still may end up getting that color too!) ;) The jacket's back (w/pleats) actually looks quite nice and falls gently. No weird protrusion on my pear shape frame. :)

ReplyDelete*The UPS man came yesterday, and he brought my Chino Cooper Jacket in British Khaki...YAY!!! I have to say that I am really pleasantly surprised at this J.Crew piece...especially for the price! The quality is excellent, and the Chino fabric feels almost silky...it feels *worn in* like your favorite pair of Chinos, but doesn't have that *worn in* look. I also feel that the picture does not do it justice...it is really pretty and flattering on the body. It can be worn buttoned up or left open, as it looks fabulous either way, and will coordinate with so many pieces that it will definitely be my *go to* jacket, as an alternative to my cardigan. :) I purchased the size 4...it is a little fitted at the shoulders when buttoned up (I have broad shoulders), but the waist would have been too big in a 6, so I went for the smaller size. I will mainly wear it unbuttoned anyways, so it shouldn't be an issue. I would definitely recommend this jacket, especially at it's current *Promotional* price.*

OT (sorry)- has anyone bought anything in the maize color? i am debating between a sweater in this or the honey glaze. the HG seems more unique to me, although the maize cardi in the catalog is very pretty too. is it extremely neon-bright like the recent yellows?
ReplyDeleteok on topic now. this jacket seems like a great deal! i cant really justify another jacket right now as i live in a warm climate, but i am happy to see jcrew offering a good quality jacket at such a reasonable price. i bought a linen jacket 2 years ago (i think it was the adelaide) back when i paid full price more often, and i can hardly ever bring myself to wear it, the fit is so boxy and the material wrinkles so easily.

ReplyDeleteYou just nailed my lament about linen. It looks great when I walk out the door, but after five minutes of driving, hello wrinkles. There was a pretty linen suit J.Crew offered this summer (i think they called it baird mcnutt linen) and I was tempted by it, until I reminded myself it was linen :-)
I'm not a huge chino wearer (almost never, actually), but I'm glad to read these reviews - if I trip across this jacket on sale later, these glovwing reviews make me want to try it :-)

ReplyDeleteAlexis: Sounds like a great jacket for you. For myself, I am not a huge fan of chino jackets. They just wrinkle too easily (even when they are fully lined). But maybe this one is different. I was happy to hear that it was fully lined because it made absolutely no sense to me why someone would buy a fall jacket that wasn't fully lined. Congrats on your purchase I bet the cut is extremely flattering
ReplyDeleteAlexis, FFM, anyone else who owns the jacket... Would you say it is warm enough to wear as your "outerwear" on a cool spring day? I have a wool jacket from JCrew that I feel silly wearing in the Spring, but it's still chilly out so I need something! I thought the Tuesday Trench would fit that purpose, but to me it didn't seem warm enough; it seemed more like an "indoors"/fashion jacket, rather than really "outerwear". I was sad about that since it was beautiful. I'd appreciate your thoughts!

ReplyDeleteMelissa, i bought the ruffle merino cardigan in maize and really like the color. I prefer the maize to the honey glaze because i don't like the greenish tint in the latter. The maize is not neon but it is bright. On a spectrum i would say the maize, while yellow, is closer to the orange tendency than the green and is less subdued than honey glaze. Honey glaze looks more wintery to me. Then again, i like bright colors.

I live in SC and plan on wearing this jacket in the fall and spring. There can be a 30 degree difference from morning to afternoon during these seasons so this jacket will be perfect. I also am planning on wearing it to work. I do work in a more casual office where chinos and jeans can be worn on a daily basis. The nature of my job, and my fashion style, requires me to wear something a bit nicer. This jacket will be great with a pencil skirt or even slacks.

ReplyDeletemeg: What is the normal temp for a Spring day where you live? I live in Florida, so it will be plenty warm here, as well as in the Fall...however, in other states where the weather is a lot cooler, you would definitely want to layer it with a turtleneck or sweater underneath, IMO. :)

tammylee: I haven't tried the Dream Turtleneck but do have two Dream Cardigans...I would say they aren't overly itchy, but are not nearly as soft as the Jackie. There is another turtleneck that I think I will opt for over the Dream, if it comes in the particular color I am looking for...it is the Tissue Turtleneck seen Here . They weren't available when I made a lot of my sets, but I have been using them more recently in place of the Dream Turtlenecks. The weight of the Tissue Turtleneck seems to be perfect for layering in warmer weather climates, and work environments that are indoors. :)

ReplyDeletecleo26: I do think the British Khaki will be more versatile overall, but the Rhubarb CAN be substituted in some of the sets if that is the one you are eyeing. I'm not sure how bright the Rhubarb is, but just as anything else...it can be toned down by making the rest of your outfit basic neutral colors. If your work environment is very formal and professional, you may want to opt for the Khaki and go back for the Rhubarb if you really love it...I am contemplating getting the Rhubarb, as well. :)

ReplyDeletetammylee: Btw...check out Endless.com...they had a couple pair of Slouchy Boots that look very similar to the Stella McCartney boots in my Polyvore sets. They are flat boots, though, and the Stella boots are heels...not sure if you have a preference.

ReplyDeleteanon@10:57: I have the Solid Kelly Jacket in Navy and Bright Flame in a Size Medium. I would have preferred a Small, but the Medium still works out well...I don't think there is a big difference between the sizes, anyways. The jacket comes to the top of my hip bone, and I am 5'4". Hope this helps! :)
ReplyDeleteJust my take: I don't like the puffed sleeves on this jacket...they are not overly puffy but they go in and out of style where a straight, more tailored sleeve is always in style...I am also wary of the rounded collar...
ReplyDeletetammylee and blumre: I think the tissue turtlenecks are defintely best worn as a layering piece under a Blazer or Sweater Jacket...that's how I intend to wear them. I think they are really great for Florida weather since they aren't overly thick and warm...I can still get the look of the turtleneck (which I love) without sweating to death. :)

ReplyDeleteAnyone purchase the Vintage Cord Peplum jacket? What do you think about it? I bought it in the "red" color. I like the cute lining and slight stretchiness but am still on the fence since i like the Cooper too. In some ways, though, the Cooper strikes me as having a bit too much going on with the banded waist, the pleats, and the pockets. Having said that, it seems i might get more versatility from the Cooper, especially if i opt for the khaki color.
I try to temper my impulses because i might like something one day, and two months from now wonder what i was thinking when i made the purchase. Also, I need to be frugal with the number of jackets (and clothes!) i am acquiring. :)
sooner_girl: I sized down for both the Tartine and Cambridge. But if you plan to wear the Tartine as a shirt, you might want to consider getting your regular size.

ReplyDeletela belle helene - I purchased the Baird McNut linen jacket in Navy and Flax. They are $39.99 on sale. I haven't worn them yet, but I don't see the wrinkle factor being as much an issue as with the skirt. Although I asked here on the boards and someone said it wrinkled, but wasn't too bad.

ReplyDeleteI too already have the colette but I think the two jackets are very different. The colette is more casual, unlined and more boxy. The cooper seems like it can dress up or down an outfit. Living in warm Tx climate, this would also be the perfect weight for a "go-to" jacket. That price is really good too...Hmmm...

gigiofca and sooner_girl, did you find the jacket fit true to size? I ended up buying it in a 4 because of comfortable shoulder/back fit even though the bodice area is now a bit to wide. If i choose to leave the jacket open, the 2 would have been a better fit.
Speaking of web issues: One thing I have also noticed is that your order history isn't always complete, based on which browser you check it in. I have a Mac for home and sometimes check it on either Firefox or Safari. I also have an IBM laptop and check it on Firefox there. It's like the feature registers which computer you ordered it off of and doesn't combine all the orders under the same account. :(

They seem to have a good selection of sizes/colors left. Why bother with the dream knit when you can get cashmere at that price?!

ReplyDeletegigiofca: I have the Baird McNutt Linen jacket in Flax (wear it just like it is shown in the catalog...Cropped Matchstick jeans in Aloe, Amelia tank in ivory, Sergenti belt/sandals) and actually haven't had much of a problem with wrinkling. I got it in Petite and it is VERY cropped on me. If it wasn't FS I would have returned it for a Regular size 0. All the same, it is a lovely jacket and looks great with this particular outfit. :)

I noticed this jacket when it first came out but passed because of the styling of the shoulders, rounded collar & pleats in the back of the jacket. I have been sucked into the 'fantasy' of other jackets only to be let down when I had it in person. The Cooper reminds me a tad too much of the Peplum look. Lately JCrew is getting so close but just not the right look for me.

ReplyDeleteYes, I have gotten 40% off the sale items when I call. I have gotten quite a few cashmere bargains this way. I open by asking if they will match the additional 40% off that is happening in the stores. They have agreed on my past 3 orders--one CSR just asked for the store in which I shopped, another had to call the store, and the third simply said yes without asking for more info. I didn't push my luck by also asking for FS or student discount on top--they seem to have gotten strict about not combining the discounts.

ReplyDeleteLBH, as weab says, the items do not need to be available in the store. The extra discount on final sale items just has to be going on in a store. I have done this both over the red phone and when I call on my own.

ReplyDeleteweab - In total agreement w/your 40% experience. I think the luck depends on the CS you get. If you get one that works from home, they can't nesc dial out to check a store. So they have to be willing to take your word and apply the discount. Best to know the store closest to you (no matter how many miles) has the 40% off.

ReplyDeleteThis is a jacket that I hope to buy - one day. I love jackets and want this one in khaki. I need a khaki jacket and this one is perfect! I just spent too much money this weekend, plus I'm buying the paintbrush floral skirt. I tried it on Monday and loved it but didn't want to pay that much. So, I bought a jackie cardigan, cord skirt, and a dress for my niece. After getting home and remembering that it was no longer online, I called yesterday and asked them to hold it. Surprisingly, they were willing to hold it until Saturday, even without my paying for it over the phone! Now, as long as Hanna misses me, I'll be down there Saturday morning. :)

ReplyDeletecasual-crew: Of course I haven't received my tunic yet! :) After they lost the order, I ordered another one. (Of course, they must refund the 1st and I must rebuy the 2nd, at the same price.) The cs told me Monday evening that they would overnight it, but I haven't received it yet and their website still shows it as released. If I don't get it this time, I'm going to assume that I'm not suppose to have it and forget it.

FFM: Right now, they say it's suppose to hit north of us. Which is good, since it puts us on the west side of the storm. There's still a chance that it could hit us; we'll know more tomorrow afternoon. It depends on how sharp of a turn it makes. And, we have Ike and Josephine right behind and they look like they're following the same path. :(

ReplyDeleteI normally wear a size M. I got a size 4 in the hammered silk tank. The 2 fit well, too - but was just a little tight around the arm holes. I couldn't tell a difference between the 2 and 4 besides that. I ordered an XS in the Lydia because the arm holes were huge! Just for reference, I have broad sholders and no chest!

ReplyDelete1. Water color Lydia: I wanted to love this like everyone else, but I'm not sure. It seems like the ruffles get lost in the print of the shirt. Even the XS is rather boxy on me. I paired it with the Regal purple Jackie. I just don't think its worth the $$.
2. Dream tie cardigan: I had to size down. I got the heather silver and eggplant. Any opinions on which one is more versatile?
3. Lydia in offwhite: Does this remind anyone else of the puffy shirt episode of Seinfeld - where he wore that puffy shirt on some talk show? I'm returning this. I just don't think the Lydia is working for me...
Questions:
1. Do most people size up for the Jackie? I wear mine with tanks and tees, and find that it pulls some when I button it up. Do you all wear your Jackies buttoned (how many buttons) or undone?
2. The Serengeti tank isn't on Polyvore - so I need outfit ideas. What are you all wearing with this? I thought maybe the brown Jackie or the silver mist/offwhie Dream tie cardigan.

ReplyDeleteRe Cooper, I am abstaining because it looks like it will hit like the Mendocino--the waist will be too high on me. I have short little legs so ordinarily I like the look of a higher waist, but IMHO the Cooper would emphasize the length of my torso from waist to fanny--see rear view on model.

Super 120s suiting dress in royal violet: I am keeping this because I love the color so much, but I expect to be paying a lot for alternations. I know every woman's figure is different, but IMHO J.Crew's designers really botched the fit on this one. I tried a 6 R and a 6 P and it looks like the 4 R is the closest fit. The back and sides are really large-I realize some of this is part of the design, but I think someone would have to have very broad shoulders and a lot of length between the shoulders and the waist to get the dress to hang the way it does on the model. As a previous poster noted, alternations will be complicated due to the waistband detailing. Only a color this gorgeous would make me go through all this.
Scoop neck perfect fit T: Nearly 4 weeks after I ordered this, they overnighted it to me (they lost the order *three* times). This is a nice fit--if I were still a single girl I would say it's a good first date top because it's feminine and shows a lot of skin without actually showing a lot of boob or cleavage (or bra strap). Persimmon is a nice orange with just a touch of red (as compared to my Marmalade capris or Sweet Orange Candace). It will look cute with jeans and my Flame/Black Clea flats.
Gah, that's *alterations*. I always do that.

ReplyDeleteComplete OT, but still... I just placed an order over the phone and forgot to ask for free shipping (sorta typical for me). So I called back and gave them the code, CSR said: I will apply it right away. I am checking my order and I dont see shipping refunded. Is that a problem? Do I need to call back? In the past when I forgot to mention free shipping code (due to excitement for getting a good deal), next CSR i talked to explain that she can't just change order that already was placed but she can put a note that shipping charge will be refunded when items ship. That charge is yet to show up on my jcrew card account so I dont know if that actually works. Did anyone have same experience?

ReplyDeleteRuffled mandarin jacket--unlined, felted-type wool felt kind of itchy. Fit is kind of boxy, and it is kind of cropped but too long to look purposely cropped and too short to look like a normal length. This is going back.
Glass bead ribbon necklace: the beads were actually not overbearing or too heavy. I think this necklace is cute if you are looking for a whimsical/playful look, but I was hoping for something more sophisticated. Also, one odd thing is that the string knotted between the black beads is a light turquoise color, which I don't really like. This is also going back b/c it doesn't really fit my professional wardrobe, but I might consider repurchasing just for fun if it goes on super sale.
Favorite fit university pants in the camel: I generally liked the style of the pants (cute button tabs on waist and liked the wide leg), but I think the camel color just washes me out b/c it matches my hair color too much. If I didn't already have several pairs of charcoal pants, I would get that color. But I can't justify $140 on pants I don't love, so they are going back.
So it was a total wash on all the new stuff, though I did get some sale items I was happy with (ruffle polo, egyptian cotton s/s cardigans, avery cardigan, 2 cashmere sweaters), which is fortunate since they are final sale. ;)
Alexis: I'm glad to hear that you love your jacket. While it's NMS, I think it looks lovely on others. And to say "value" and "J Crew Jacket" in the same sentence...well, that has to put a smile on your face!
ReplyDeleteOT: I received the spicy mustard Lucille in an 8 thanks to a very nice and helpful manager at JCrew in Lake O, OR. She used the product locator and found me one (it was sold out previously on the site, but is now back) at Stanford. She arranged to have it FedExd to me (no charge) and allowed me to keep my 15% FALL discount from the catalog! :) I was beyond pleased !
I want to give a "shout-out" to musthavecrew, for being such a sweetie and offering me her size 8 Lucille. She kindly held off returning it until I knew the dealio from JCrew and I thought that was really sweet, seeing as it's a $280+ coat!
Weab: I also found out that the Anthropologie New Semester Jacket that I had ordered runs very large! (now viewable only on Polyvore) I had ordered both a Medium and Large but the small fits me! Their sizing is very wacky (Guinevere is the manufacturer). In any case, the small is perfect - more of a sweater/light jacket vs. the jacket-feel of the Lucille. The jacket is unlined, so it doesn't retain it's structure like a true jacket. But it's a beautiful layering piece, more like a sweater. The color is a rich red and the lambswool is super-cozy!

argyle: I am an XS in every J Crew sweater except for the Jackie. I usually order a Medium in the cardigan and a Small in the shell. If I don't do this then I get the "pulling" that you speak of. Also, I wear my Sergenti tank with the Regal Purple Jackie cardi...it looks awesome!

I got it in Peacock to go with my Bright Blue Jackie cardigan. So pretty together...I was relieved that they still had my size when I reordered!
OT: Who has the Martine cardi in the Pink/Orange combination? Someone said that their PS matched it with a navy tank, I believe. Does that sound correct? Just checking before I wear it! :)

The color is luscious, but again, it's not a "jacket" jacket...They had fantastic customer service too. The jacket is $20 less than it was in the store and when I pointed that out, they were extremely apologetic and charged me the online price.
Weab: If you want, let me know what size you are needing in the Anthro jacket...they were trying to divert my package (with the M and L) but I haven't heard if they were successful. If not, I know I have those...they also had one other Small and 2 extra smalls in-store, plus a few mediums and larges.

Oh no, JcrewJunkie - I'm already 3 Medium Jackies in. I think I should have gotten Larges. Surely if I am a size 4 and wear a Medium in most things I shouldn't size up to an XL, right?! I'll have to try an L.
ReplyDeleteI love the reviews on here. However, I won't be purchasing this piece. I bought the Liana jacket not too long ago and get so many compliments. I have big shoulders versus waist so these sleeves rarely work for me.
ReplyDeleteI tried the cord peplum jacket on last week. It wasn't flattering on my shape.
Here is Memphis, it is either hot (high 90s) or in the 30s-40s. I can wear these jackets to work but I typically dump the jacket once I get there. The Liana and the canvas Fionas seem to be the two jackets I keep on during the day.
*If* I didn't have some other jackets that would also work well, I might order this to try it out. While I don't do well with the shoulder/sleeves like this one, I love the pleats.

ReplyDeleteCleo26 - I wear a 4 and found the cord peplum to be tts. It sounds like you got the correct size. Remember that you will want the option to button it and you will also want room for a layer or two underneath.
argyle - I usually wear my jackies opened all the way or buttoned except for the top 2. I have some S and usually take a S but I just recvd a M and I love that, too. I think you did good to get mediums if you don't want them to pull across the bust. I think L or XL is too large because then it won't fit in the shoulders.
Weab and Audrey: Speaking of Anthro...I got their catalog yesterday and have a new must have item. The ellipses shooties (page 14). I don't live near a store, have you seen these IRL?

argyle: Keep the Medium! I like a looser, longer fit of a Medium because I don't like my shell to peek out at the bottom. Also, my Jackie always ends up in the dryer so getting a Medium allows for shirnkage! I also do wear the XS, but don't like the tight fit in the arms. I think that you would swim in an XL, or even an L. What color Jackies did you get? I got the Bright Blue last week (pairing it with the Peacock Hammered Silk tank) and it is luscious!

ReplyDeleteFor the Jackie, I have one from last year in a medium but bought 4 this year (navy, black, cream, kelly green) in small. I don't usually button them all the way, so I find that the smalls fit best in my shoulders.
Emily - those shoes are great! And actually affordable for Anthro. Their shoes are usually SO expensive that I never buy them. My boyfriend will hate these, but I may have to scoop them up anyway!
