J.Crew Winter Coats: When To Buy?

In the "Love It Or Leave It: J.Crew Opera Gloves" post, many of us (like KatherineD, Melissa, Ashley and myself) started discussing J.Crew's winter coats. I mentioned that I thought this topic was a great one and deserved its own dedicated post. :)

One of the things discussed is when to purchase outerwear from J.Crew. I personally think it is a gamble on when to buy winter coats. Although, the coats usually are offered at their greatest sale prices during the January and February months, you can never be sure that what you want (in terms of preferred size and color) will still be available.

I own 7 J.Crew winter coats and they were all bought at different points of the fall/winter seasons. In most cases, I wished that I had waited a bit longer before buying them. For example, I bought the J.Crew Sybil Coat (in the bright poppy color) last year for almost full price at the end of the Fall season when I noticed it was already on back order. A month after I received the coat, the coat was slashed drastically in price (almost half of what I paid). I also bought the black Bella winter jacket (which is my new personal favorite!) last year for about $150, and saw it in late January for around $80. ;)

I am also a sucker for buying the more expensive Thinsulate version of the coat. I am not sure if the Thinsulate really makes a difference, but I completely "fall" for it. In fact, most of my J.Crew winter coats that have Thinsulate (like the Sybil, Lady Day, and Plaza) are not that great at keeping me warm. The best J.Crew coat (in terms of warmth) is my navy Stadium Jacket (which doesn't even have Thinsulate- the fabric is just awesome).

When do you buy winter coats from J.Crew? When do you think are the best months to buy a winter coat (in terms of selection and price)? What is your favorite J.Crew winter coat (past or present coat)? Would you recommend a J.Crew winter coat (in terms of style or warmth) or do you prefer another brand?

  1. Great topic. I still have an ice blue peacoat from 1999 that's held up quite well.

I grabbed an azalea Lady Day coat a couple of years ago in March for about a third off (not that great a discount, really considering how late in the season it was). Ordered a 6 P but it was still very small in shoulders.

Last year I was eyeing the chocolate Agnes car coat (slight swing silhouette, bracelet sleeves) all fall. I didn't buy it during the October private sale and wound up regretting it when the 6 briefly sold out in mid November, so I panicked and bought the 4 at full price (turned out 4 was the right size for me anyway). It went on sale after Xmas but IIRC there weren't many left.

This year I like the Tulip coat in violet but I don't really have a justification for it--maybe on sale?

I highly recommend the Thinsulate--I have it in the peacoat and Lady Day, and its absence in the Agnes really limits that coat to autumn for me.

As for when to buy--I guess it just depends on when you need the coat and your tolerance for the risk that it will sell out before it gets marked down.

  2. hex-- What is the private sale? Is it only for cardholders, or is it just something you have to be in the know about?

    ReplyDelete
  3. I think it is either for cardholders or online customers (apparently, one of the very few perks offered to online only customers). The e-mails offer a 20% discount on full price items for a specified period (3 or 4 days) and are sent out a couple of times a year. I know there was one in October of last year and I also have one from July of this year.

  4. Alexis: I totally agree about the Thinsulate! All of my J. Crew coats have it, but they don't seem to keep me very warm. I'd hate to imagine what they'd be like without it.

Living in Texas, I have the luxury of not really *needing* a coat as much, so I'm good to go with one really good longish one and one shorter, casual one for the season. Since having a multiple of coats isn't a need or a priority for me, I can wait until the end of the season to see what's left. Usually the selection is very good!

  5. And I forgot to add that J. Crew is pretty much the only brand that I look at when it comes to coats. I occasionally buy something on sale from BR, but the style and quality of J. Crew coats cannot be matched. All other coats just look "blah" in comparison. I love J. Crew for the wide variety of styles and colors they offer in outerwear. I am all about the brightly colored winter coat!

  6. Hmm I wonder if I need Thinsulate for the Seattle weather, I just prefer to layer with a tank, a long sleeve shirt and a cashmere sweater. I'm going to hold out till October and if there still isn't a discount I'll just go ahead and either buy the Felicia or the Tuesday Trench.

I'll probably get the one I like more in October, and then see if other ones are still available in Jan/Feb!

  7. By the way, there are some new items on the website I think.

  8. Thanks for the tip, Konosur! It's really sad that I know the selection of clothing on the website so well, but here's what I noticed:

Solid & Leopard Print Annette Blouses
    Solid Rollneck Silk Dress
    Herringbone Hayward Coat

Did I miss anything or list stuff that was already there?

  9. I have had 3 J. Crew coats and bought them all on sale in the late winter/spring months from online: a long pea coat, a navy Lady coat, and a brick red Plaza coat. I think the prices for them all peaked around the time of purchase. I love the material on the first one the best, it had a cashmere blend and was charcoal gray, so it was dark but not boring. Ended up giving it away when I moved from London because the lining was ripped and I'd lost some weight; I still sigh about it.

OT- How do we ("we") feel about the watercolor floral Madison dress, in the blue ("deep atlantic") color? I saw it in the store today, tried it on, and walked away, but I can't get it out of my mind. I really like the pattern and the texture. I usually like my skirts A-lined but this was a straight one; that's my only caveat and is not the best cut for my problematic stomach region... It's on "final sale" in store... but I might go back for it tomorrow if I can't stop thinking about it. There were a range of sizes if anyone's interested, Northpark Mall in Dallas-- it's got a delayed ship date online.

  10. I noticed a new bag too - the Sean bag.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi Ashley - yeah, that stuff looks new. That rollneck silk dress looks cute, but it also looks like something you can't sit in, 'cause then you'll get all those horizontal line wrinkles in the front. Eeek!

The accessories catalog is on the main page - I assume it's not the whole thing, and not really new products, just styled in a different way.

On the subject of coats, I have the double-breasted wool black Charlie coat from a few seaons back. LOVE it - Peter Pan collar, bracelet sleeves, hits at mid-thigh or so. I got it off of eBay last September (new with tags) for $125. One of the buttons had to be sewn on again after wearing it all winter, and there's a hole in the pocket lining now, but I should be able to fix that too. The wool still looks great! I wore it with the opera-length Torino gloves and Fair Isle beret most of the winter.

I think that the best time to buy winter coats from .com is in March or so - that's when they're around $99. My sister got a white Lady Day this spring for about that price. However, I think we're getting into prime time for coats on eBay - you should definitely check it out if you missed a coat from a past season! I'm still kicking myself over missing out on the Gramercy from last year - but maybe I'll get lucky this fall.

  12. I really wanted to get the Lucille, but after finding out the Orange is just another name for *Bright Flame* it looks as if I won't be. I just don't think the Spicy Mustard will be flattering with my skintone, and as you all know...those are the only two color choices on the coat. So my other choice is the Peacoat...I am debating on Black, Camel, or Ivory. Any opinions? I also like the Lady Day Coat in Sea Salt or the Wool-Cashmere Plaza Coat in Camel. Coats are tricky here in Florida...there is only a handful of days out of the year that one is actually needed, so it needs to be classic and timeless to go from year to year. I am definitely in need of a new coat this year, so now it is a matter of deciding which coat, what color, and when to buy.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have a peacoat that I actually got in the outlet years back (I think 4 years ago). Its held up well but its not the warmest thing in the world. Frankly b/c J.Crew coats don't keep me warm, I dont buy them. In my opinion, it is easy to find better quality and similar styles in other coats. Last winter I got a gorgeous Calvin Klein coat at Lord and Taylor for over 50% off its original selling price. I never buy coats before Christmas, its just not worth it.

I might buy a J.Crew peacoat again this year, I am still debating. But if I do, it will be after Christmas that is for sure!

  14. FFM: I would go with a camel colored coat....I own a JCrew one from 5 years ago and it still looks great and I love the color as it goes with everything...casual to dressy. It is a longer style.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It is so hard to know when to buy...if the coat is really needed and I mean really needed I would get right after Thanksgiving in order to get the most wear out of it.....if it is just something extra to add to a coat collection I would wait. On the other hand, if it is a to die for coat that you have been searching for....get it before your size/color is sold out:)

    ReplyDelete
  16. FFM: I own 2 peacoats and a plaza coat. My peacoats are green and brown and my plaza is in black. The plaza is so nice and luxurious; I only wear it when dressing up. My peacoats I wear all the time. I love the camel colour, but sadly, in the UK that colour is reserved for ladies over 70. If you are looking for classic and timeless, I would go for a peacoat in any colour that you mentioned. If it were me, I would get the peacoat in camel or salt and the plaza coat in black that way you are set for any occasion.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I was literally thinking about this last night. I picked up a Fiona and a cord jacket already (but I know those aren't winter coats). I live in the South and we don't have a ton of days winter coats are needed. That being said I really do need a nice new one on those few occasions cold weather crops up. I'm going to wait it out a bit. I really want the boucle one. Can't decide color though. Shorter coats look better on me. I'm short and the longer ones make my legs look super short!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Also, what are your thoughts on the Tulip coat? I love it but I am afraid that sleeve will date the coat. Is it worth buying? Do you think I will be able to wear it for a couple of winters?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anony@7:37: I live in the UK too and I have never heard/seen the camel colored coat and over 70 thing...that's a new one on me:) I'm I consider myself pretty young too:)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anony@7:45. I think the Tulip coat is great and I bet you could 2 seasons out of it for sure! maybe even 3:)

  21. The Konosur, Ashley, et al: Thank you so much for letting us know about some new additions at J.Crew.com!!! :) I am very excited to see some new items. I have also already turned that into a post (Some New Items Arrived At J.Crew.com! )

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anon 8:02. Really? I moved here a little over a year ago and last winter I mentioned to an English friend that I really wanted a camel colour coat and she said that colour is reserved for old ladies. So I started to look around and she was right, I have yet to see a younger person wearing camel. Maybe it depends on where you live. I live in Bedford. Maybe I will buck the trend!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have a camel colored coat from BR. I bought it 4 years ago and I still wear it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. After looking at at the catalogs from last year, I noticed that they offer different colors for the peacoat in Sept/Oct than in Nov/Dec. I hope that they will come out with a nice red in that style - however, that probably means that it won't go on sale until after Christmas, and I really need to wear a warm jacket starting in November.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have the Lucille in Spicy Mustard and it (amazingly) looks great with my blonde hair. Most of the yellow/greens make me look ill because of my coloring. I also have a black peacoat (short) with Thinsulate, a Pony Brown peacoat (short) with Thinsulate, and a Sea Salt colored peacoat (short) without Thinsulate which I wear in the late winter/early spring. The Sea Salt colored one is my favorite, and the one that I wear most often. I purchase my coats on sale, usually right after Christmas or at the end of January. My biggest regret is not getting the Dani peacoat (short) last year in yellow. I loved that coat and by the time they went on sale my size was gone. :(

  26. Just got off the phone with JCrew...first rep had me on hold for 12 mintues and all we had was my name at that point....things are running slowly.....I hung up and decided to try again.

Next, I found out they can't look up internet orders over the phone!!!! What the heck???!!! those orders start in 2's...

Also, she would not combine the 15% off FALL coupon with my educators 15% off discount....you can only use one coupon code! She was very firm on this point...UGH! I am really disappointed in this whole NEW system and new coupon rules thing!

  27. Anony@8:15--I live about 2 hours north of London...I saw the most beautiful camel brown soft soft wool funnel neck coat in a store yesterday and it was definitely a "hip" little place......if I didn't already one in that color from JCrew I would have bought it....it was so pretty with this neat double breasted buttons...

    ReplyDelete
  28. anon 8:35 - There is a new CS rep this morning, she would not look up the inventory for me, I found out later (by calling back) that the item is low inventory, had I known that I would have changed my color. Call back, they combined my discounts for me.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I live up in the great white north- I am afraid the coats would not be warm enough for me, although they are beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  30. P.S. to my 8:35 post....I just hung up after my second try and decided I don't need the coat that bad then....I am just frustrated with the wait time and being told so many different things by different reps. I know standardization might keep us from the occasional double discount but I would prefer standard rules so I know where I stand each phone call instead of playing Russian roulette.....

  31. Anony@7:45: I bought the Tuliip coat already this year and I'm keeping the tags on until I make a final decision. I bought it in boring black as I needed a dressy coat for formal, evening events. Because it is a more "trendy" style than the Lady Day, I questioned the purchase, but then realized all by coats are boring and ugly, so I went for the Tulip and I'll probably wear it for as long as it lasts because I don't HAVE to have the newest thing all the time.

Question though, Does the Tulip Coat not come with Thinsulate since it is not listed as an option in the catalog (as I recall)? The PS in my store said they ALL just CAME with Thisulate - but I'm not sure that's true! Thanks!

  33. Thanks for all the info and color suggestions on the coats everyone! I am really a fan of Camel and Ivory (along with Black, of course). I also don't consider Camel to be an old lady color...I would consider it to be an *old money* color, though...so classic, versatile, and timeless. :) A peacoat will probably be the best option for my lifestyle and thus my initial purchase, but I may try to invest in a longer, dressier coat when they go on sale.

  34. OT-
I just got 5 separate emails of the items cancelled from my sale order placed last week. I am PO'ed. I know A LOT of people are SO mad about the website but I order SO MUCH J Crew and I have yet to be cursed with not receiving my items. The worst that happened is that they cancelled a new item for absolutely no reason and then I called and they got it for me and then one time they sent me the wrong item and have since tracked it down (yes-I then recv'd 2 of the same thing but at least I got it!) Well-not this time!
Anyone else's sale order with a lot of BARGAINS cancelled??
Thanks for listening to me vent:(

    ReplyDelete
  35. mic5: I had almost my entire ordered cancelled over the course of last week. Out of 12 items I have received notification that 3 are still available. If this is the case then why in the heck did they still have them listed on the website. SO SO frustrating!!

  36. I bought my first, and only so far, J. Crew coat this year based solely on the fabric -- cashmere -- and the style -- Bella. While i do really like the look of the coat and its rich camel color, i can't say that it's very warm. I was a little disappointed since i had invested quite a bit in it.

Based on my experience with this coat, I would not recommend J. Crew coats for extremely cold weather. I think warmth somehow has to be sacrificed for style unless you buy shearling or the like and with the exception of some of the higher-end designer coats. Then we talk about different price points.

Best time to buy: Feb or Mar for price, hoping the size is still available. Overall, i prefer other brands for warmth.

  37. I bought two Sybil coats last January in Dark Poppy and Deep Violet. I think they were around $160-ish. Love them both dearly. I was at a Factory Store this past weekend and noticed that they had a Sybil coat there but it was made of an awfully cheap-feeling felt kind of material. Definitely made me appreciate my coats even more.

  38. I loved the tulip coat in purple and tried it on in-store fully intending to love it. Honestly I didn't find it that flattering, I felt like the waist band hit too high and made me look wide and the color was just a touch too bright. I was super, super bummed! I really wanted to treat myself to a J Crew coat this fall so I'm going to have to keep looking...

    ReplyDelete
  39. The deep persimmon is just another JCrew shade of orange too in person. I like the floral Astrid but it is more orange than red to me and I want a true red jacket to wear for the holidays and Valentine's Day etc. I have so many reddish/orange items from JCrew and I really do LOVE them but some real red please!

    ReplyDelete
  40. My opinions...to those who mentioned it--I see no reason one cannot wear the Tulip coat the rest of their lives if desired. There is nothing trendy about this coat. The sleeves are a beautiful look that is timeless.

I think camel is gorgeous on most people and do not think age plays any part in it. I worked for Ralph Lauren for many years--this coat/color is timeless and gorgeous on any age. He loves it:)

The new coat they put up (cannot remember name-Hayward?) is just too much fabric. It would overpower a waif-model (as it does in the pic) in my opinion. If you are larger than a 2/4--just forget about it:(

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm interested in the Sherpa-lined goosedown puffer jacket. Does anyone have it from a past season or has anyone tried it on this year?

I'm liking the honey glaze color. That color in the image online looks like a pale yellow - not like the deeper gold color of the sweaters and skirts in honey glaze.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I bought a black Lady Day coat four years ago and it is still my main coat. Wish I'd opted for thinsulate, however I'm not certain how much warmer it really makes the coat.

This year I really love the camel Plaza coat, (for which i made a polyvore outfit) and the sea salt Lady Day coat. I feel that the camel color is timeless and elegant, not "old lady" at all.

lindsey b: I think the Tulip coat is beautiful and not in the least bit trendy, especially for use with evening/formal attire. I think it's a good choice.

  43. Last year, J Crew had quite good sales on outerwear in the month or so before Christmas -- I think 20% off. The after-Christmas prices are better, but not by that much (at least initially), and there's no worry of sizes selling out or final sale nonsense.

I actually ended up exchanging a coat I received for Christmas and they even sent me a price-adjustment check for the difference between the pre-Christmas sale price and the post-holiday clearance price. Not bad!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anon 11:38 AM: Dark Poppy is a truly red color;very bright & beautiful.
I bought my first J.Crew coat last season in this color; Sybil coat with thinsulate.
J.Crew's color palette is amazing and simply unmatched by other retailers, i.e., Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, etc.
Their coats are well made and come in wonderful colors/styles that sort of make winter exciting; however, even with Thinsulate I can't really wear my coat below 35 degrees:( Winters in the midwest can be really, really cold:(
If J.Crew would only improve on the "warmness" factor; I'd feel completely justified in paying full price for their coats.

    ReplyDelete
  45. tammylee: I too am looking at the Sherpa Lined Goosedown Puffer jacket in Honey Glaze. I love the color! I find that the fit runs true to size (at least for me it does). I have the Platinum Collection one from last season, but never really did like the color.

    ReplyDelete
  46. FFM: My favorite peacoat is in the Sea Salt color and it goes from the first days of fall clear through spring. I absolutely love it (got it without Thinsulate so I could wear it longer) and the color looks fab with everything! :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. jcrewjunkie: I'm tempted to purchase the jacket online this week while the Fall coupon code (15% off) is still valid. Or would you hold out for a better price down the road? The salesperson in my store said she thinks if they get them in, they'll go fast.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ashley: I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who thinks the Thinsulate doesn't really add to the warmth of the coats. :)

FFM: I like the Peacoat in black. It such a simple but classic color. :) I also like the Lady Day Coat in Ivory. I think that is another feminine and classic piece. :)

Anon at 8:35 AM: I am surprised to hear that they would not honor your educators discount. I would just send them an email from that account requesting the discount be applied. Hopefully they will honor it. :)

Mic5: I am so sorry to hear about your orders- that is absolutely awful (and really ridiculous on J.Crew's part). I would send them an email telling them what happened with all your orders. They need to know their system is canceling even new item orders. :(

Cleo26: I hear you on the Bella Winter Coat not being very warm. It is a very thin material. But it is very pretty! :)

Anon at 11:38 AM: I am with you! J.Crew, bring back some Holiday Red pieces. :)

  49. Alexis, regarding the educator's discount---I was told I was already getting a discount with the FALL 15% off promo code so I could not use another discount of any kind. I was also told that if it was a final sale item say with an additional percentage off then I COULD use the educators discount b/c no other code was being used but that makes no sense to me. I tried to calmly state my point and the rep. wouldn't budge...I will try sending the email like you suggested but I wonder if I will get the standard reply like I have read on here that others get saying, "Your order already had a discount so we can't apply it." This is really frustrating. Thanks for listening and replying. I just wish someone HIGH HIGH UP could clarify this for all of us once and for all.

  50. The lining is AWFUL! JCrew coats do not last and retain their quality throughout the years! The Thinsulate does not hold up to the cold MN winters.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Just my $.02 on the Thinsulate--I live in the Pacific NW, where it doesn't actually get that cold, but I'm one of those people who's always freezing and I find the Thinsulate essential.

Re camel, so funny that the Brits think it's old lady (or OL as Charla Krupp's book would say). I have a great Nordstrom camel coat (real camel hair) which I absolutely love and can't bring myself to discard even though it's terribly beaten up. It's from the early 90s but the styling is pretty 80s--it's huge, large shoulders, mid-calf, and belted. I love that it's big enough that I can toss it over anything. If I wait a few more years it will be retro . . . .

In clothing, I love the way that camel looks with black and chocolate brown. And camel and red make a very 80s combo that is due for a comeback.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anon at 5:32PM: I am sorry to hear that they were adamant about not giving you the educator's discount. Frankly, I am surprised they wouldn't even offer it to you as a "one time courtesy" offer. Depending on how much you would save ($1 vs $10+), I would send an email asking for the discount. As long as you are polite in the email, J.Crew is pretty good about being responsive. :) Good luck!!! :)

  53. My university coat from two years ago has the thinsulate lining and it's a wool coat. It gets cold here and luckily I wear sweaters and scarves with it. Okay not more than one sweater or scarf at a time.

The coat is warm, but remember I drive to work, park in a garage and have heated seats. If I had to wait outside for the bus or walk for blocks in January I'd wear a down puffer coat instead. The wool coat would be fine in Seattle winters.

But ... the wool coat is far more stylish. I look like the Stay Puff marshmallow man in my puffer coat.

  59. I will receive my 10th jcrew coat today, the double cloth Tulip coat in mediterranean blue. Although I have enough coats already and really not sure if I will have any space for it in my already crammed closet. I just cannot resist the color and the style. I hope it will look nice on me as I expected.
I ordered it with the 20% off coupon on full price items, and used my $50 reward card, so at the end I paid about $230 after tax. I think it is not bad, because if I wait until it markdown after a couple of months, I will still buy it at around $200, and maybe it will be final sale.

    ReplyDelete
  60. tammylee: I think that they will go fast as well, especially in the Honey Glaze color that is shown online. I used the FALL code to order mine now so that I am not relegated to ordering a color that I don't particularly like later on (when I need to to go skiing). :)

I live in Cambridge, MA, and from the comments above, am not sure that the Lady Day would be warm enough...I actually bought one ($!00 off with the sale and student discount), but I wasn't sure about the size, so Im doing an exchange..I only wore it in the house, but it doesn't seem super warm.. : (

  65. pharmbloger -- How was the mediterranean blue in the lady day coat? I am thinking of buying it from online and am having trouble deciding between that and the heather violet/purple.

Does anyone know if there is much of a difference between Petite size 0 and Petite size 2? I already have the lady day in a size P0 which fits perfectly but now the blue is only available in purple so I would have to buy a P2. The size chart lumps the two sizes together so that's no help. The lady day I have is great but it is in sea salt so not practical for everyday use. Thanks!

  66. I'm not sure where to post this, but here it is anyway, my review of the Lady Day.

I have the lady day WITHOUT thinsulate and it is super. I wore it for the first time today during my half-hour walk to school and I was almost getting a little too warm! Mind you I live in Boston and it was 20 degrees today. And all I had underneath was a tee and a lightweight merino cardi.

Yes, the coat seems thin at first sight, but it is heavy and tightly woven. It is plenty warm and the wind doesn't cut through. I'm sure the Thinsulate is probably warmer, but I don't have any regrets about saving a few $$$ and maybe the extra bulk.

  67. J. Crew coats - I love them, and I hate them! I only own 2 - my first was a charcoal peacoat WITH thinsulate - which I agree, was totally useless and not worth the extra $$. The second is a black lady day coat (which I am currently wearing on a regular basis)- don't get me wrong - J.Crew's coats are beautiful and never cease to wow me, but the acetate linings of both of these coats suck! They wear out and split with little wear...does anyone else have this problem....?

As a side note...does anyone know where one could find their Greta coat for sale in a size 10 in seasalt? By the time I clicked "confirm" for my order they were all gone in the final sale! Boo hoo!

  68. I just bought the lady day coat for only $99 in my size and the color I wanted-black. Jcrew had a lot of sizes in this coat and in what I thought would be the more popular colors; black, sea salt, and brown. However, the coat is backordered until july but I won't need it for another year anyway. So in answer to your question on when to buy jcrew coats I would say wait until late winter.
