Menswear View: The Get – Hoodie or Pullover.

Note: Doug regularly guest blogs on J.Crew for men (the "menswear view")- which I think is wonderful! :) (Thank you Doug!) The following is his post:

Few things are as comfortable as a warm sweatshirt or as they are commonly referred to around planet J.Crew the Hoodie or Pullover. So which do you prefer? Both are incredibly soft and offer excellent resistance to the Fall chill. My choice would be the Shawl collar pullover in Navy.
What are your thoughts on the color pallet? Would you like to see greater variety? Does the price make you inclined to wait for a discount, coupon or either to appear in the sale section of J.Crew website?

  1. The pullovers look nice, but for convenience I always opt for the hoodies. (I like the zippers.)

OT - I emailed CS to ask if the final sale is permanent, and here is what I was told:

"No, the final sale is not permanent. We will be having just a fall sale here soon where the items will be returnable and exchangable."

    Yay!!!! :)

  2. Definitely thinking of the hoodie, in dark brown, but I'm considering the sherpa one. It looks warm and cozy and winter's coming, so why not.

The pullover looks good too, but I need a zippered one so I'll go with the hoodie. OKay who am I kidding, I shouldn't confuse need and want.

  3. I really like the guest blogging. It helps add another point of view to this blog and make it feel more like a community, in a way. All voices can be heard and shared!

Also, I agree with rocket scientist and like hoodies for their convenience. I am constantly cold, then too hot, then cold. I like that a hoodie can be easily pulled on and off. No need to even zip!

  4. I ordered the Fleece hooded zip sweatshirt over the weekend. The hood is roomy (much better than ones from the GAP's and American Apparel). The zipper is metallic, not of the plastic variety. I'm sure I would get good mileage out it.

I like the pullovers design but it fits funny, like a barrel, in comparison to any hoodie or sweater of the same size. (I generally wear x-small but only smalls are available at the local stores, but I would try them in different styles to gauge the fit.) I expect the pullovers to have a more athletic fit. Maybe when it is available in x-small, I will change my mind.

  5. It's a tough choice for me: I feel like the Pullover has a more "finished" look (more like a sweater), but the hoodie has the flexibleness (of being worn open or closed, with the hood) that I really enjoy. Maybe I would end up getting both of them! :)

  7. I like the shawl collar pullover (in grey) for myself! My boyfriend would not wear either of these. He likes the (wool/merino/etc.) half-zip pullovers, though.

  9. The zipped hoodie for me. As all "cool" people may know, the more zips you have, the cooler you are. Check out Fonzie, the man wears a jacket that's more zip than jacket. While a man like George Bush, who is totally uncool, doesn't even have a zip on his trousers. ;)

  10. Thanks for the post Doug...great job! :)

I have to say that I prefer the Hoodie in Navy, as I'm not a fan of Pullovers at all. :)

  11. For my dh I'd pick the shawl collar for casual outtings and the hoodie for kicking around at home. I do wish there were more colors in the shawl. Dh says he is tired of wearing black, grey, and navy. He wants a little color in his life. I like the heathered red, orange, and green they have available in the tees

  12. The shawl collar is just plain ugly. It doesn't work for me because it is a sweatshirt, and not a sweater. As for the pallet, I'm all for blacks, blues, and grays.

  13. My husband LOVES his Hoodie -- he got it in the dark gray. Really soft, solid, warm -- just wishes the pockets were a little deeper. We got a big discount so for $40 it seemed like a good deal.

  14. I love the shawl collar. Casual feeling, but clean looking. I like the look of a hoodie, but usually don't use the functionality of it. I wear a cap if I want my head covered. Go figure. I didn't notice the pullover before. That's something DH might like.

  15. My husband has always been a fan of zip hoodies and not pullovers! I have to agree with him!

  16. I like the new men's fleece cardigan. There's a ladies version last winter (with a belt) that I really liked.

At least the cardigan has the advantage over pullover that you don't have to struggle to pull it over your head, and it's a little dressier than a hoodie.

  17. jcrew guy in canada:

I definitely recommend getting the sherpa one. The cotton/fleece ones aren't that heavy, and I've tried on and almost bought the sherpa one a few times. I think I'm going to purchase it one of these days. Though at the sale prices the others are tempting as well!

  18. JCrew mens hoodies do not fit right. The bottom of the hoodie and zip-ups make you look big and bulky from the back. I would remind everyone of that before purchasing them.. if you have a nice body you should show it not hide under fluff. The shawl is the worst, I would just recommend a Banana Republic shawl pullover it looks nicer and has a cleaner fit. But the back and bottom of hem does not come close enough to the body to give a good look. Its just my opinion.. but I work for Norsdtrom as a personal shopper and I do sometimes help my clients with outside purchases and this is just something I have noticed. And once I shoe the customer they have a "ahhhh" look.

  19. galen: Thanks for the review. I've decided to order the hoodie tomorrow in the dark brown, I think they call it dark bark. I'll be sure to ost my review of it.
