J.Crew sent an email about their (beautiful) wide leg trousers. I absolutely adore the style and cut of J.Crew's trouser leg no matter what the fabric (cotton, wool, denim, etc.). I find that it is a flattering silhouette for most body types and offers a professional clean look.
The following are the pants featured in the image:
- Favorite-fit stretch wool trouser; Item 99223; $138.00
- Favorite-fit wool twill university pant; Item 96135; $139.50
- City-fit luxe cord trouser; Item 99287; $89.50
- Favorite-fit chalk-stripe university pant; Item 97014; $148.00
What are your thoughts of J.Crew's wide leg trousers? Do you own any of the wide leg trousers? If so, please let us know what you think. :)
I have the City-fit luxe cord trouser in ivory. They are incredibly soft. I love the fit - they are much more comfortable and flattering than the Bootcut or Favorite-fit stretch vintage trouser cords.
ReplyDeleteI love them but wish the patterned ones came in "tall". I guess I could wear flats if I bought the regular 33" inseam. Hmmmmm. Will be near a store in a couple of weeks so I might try them on.
ReplyDeleteI am a BIG fan of wide leg trousers...I haven't tried on a pair of these yet, as they weren't available in my B&M the last time I was there. I'm going out to the mall one evening this week, and will be sure to give these a try. :)
ReplyDeleteI like the wide leg, I find the fit very flattering to my figure. I wish I ordered the City fit lux cords instead of the boot cut, they look great.
ReplyDeletecasual-crew: have you worn the bootcut yet? You could call and ask to exchange for the lux cords instead. :)
ReplyDeleteffm: No I haven't worn them yet but I live in Canada and it is such a hassle returning stuff, I will keep them, and if I see the City Fit go on sale I will get them.
ReplyDeleteI am a huge fan and plan to order the Favorite-fit wool twill university pant. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the info. I have looked at the wide leg cords several times. I think it's time to bite the bullet and order a pair.
ReplyDeleteI have the favorite fit University trousers from last year (they are the same as this year's version) and they are awesome. Wide legs are sooooo flattering when you have some curves. These pants really balance out your hips. I highly recommend!!!
ReplyDeleteI like wide-leg trousers but sometimes the leg will drape funny and I will just look short and stumpy. So, I'd definitely have to try these on in person. :)
ReplyDeletePS. For some reason, the upside down picture in the chalk-stripe university pants made me laugh. I rolled my mouse over and suddenly saw the model flipped over ... it was an unexpected image!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Melanie. I have 2 pairs of the city-fit cord trouser from last year and I have mixed opinions on them. I like that they're really relaxed and don't squeeze at the waist. However, I do find that my legs look a little stumpy as a petite. Unlike the wool wide-leg trousers, I don't find that I can really dress up the city-fit cord trouser too well or wear them with high heels. Therefore, I generally wear them with ballet flats or tennies. I also found that the corduroy material was a little thin on these trouser cords (at least last year's). They're good through fall, but once winter hits, I need a much thicker material.
ReplyDeleteThis year, I bought the favorite-fit stretch vintage trouser cord. I absolutely adore them!! Although I had to go up a size (from 0P to 2P), they flatter me much more. I like that they can be dressed up a lot better and look great with dressy high heels. The straight leg and the streamlined design makes my legs look a million milesl long! The corduroy material is also thicker, so I'll be able to wear these in the winter.
I too didn't care for the stretch vintage bootcut cord (or the matchstick cord - I could barely get those over my hips!). But I will be buying more of the favorite-fit stretch vintage trouser cord for sure!
I also like last year's city fit herringbone navy either academy or university pants - can't remember. They have a wide trouser leg but drape very well due to the heavy wool.
I love this year's favorite fit herringbone academy in sweet potato even more! On me, they are a bit of a wide leg, but they're a really beautiful cut, especially in that color.
Sometimes, I prefer favorite fit to city fit, depending on the style of pants. I do find, however, that I usually have to go up a size in favorite fit.
A question for anyone who has the lux cords. What color is the warm saffron IRL. On the model they look dark mustard, but when you click the color it just shows the pants by themselves and they look much more yellow.
ReplyDelete3 penny princess - Thanks for the comments on fit and fabric. I too usually prefer favorite to city fit. The favorite fit also come in more colors.
ReplyDeleteI just received my bootcut vintage cords in faded cement I love them, it is true what 3-penney-princess said that who have to size up on the favorite fit, I did and they fit great.
ReplyDeleteO/T I received the City Tee Grosgrain cardigan I love it, it is true what some said about the buttons they are hard to undo, but I just pull it over my head instead (I am so lazy). It is short comes to the high hip, but I would not size up, it would be too baggy.
I also received the cashmere kit, kinda of a waste of money, oh well purchasing this allowed me to used the fs code.
Am I the only one who like the matchstick cords? I bought them for $15 about two winters ago and went back for more... I did have to size up, but they made me look long and lean and, in black or gray, were really great with some of that year's bright merino sweaters. I'm still looking forward to wearing mine this year with all the plum and silver-ish shades. I'm kind of long-waisted though without defined waist/hips.
ReplyDeleteI like my jeans boot-cut but I do like my work pants in a wider leg... I have a pair of favorite-fit wide-leg super 120s in pinstripe that I wish I had bought in a solid as well. They fit great and don't do that "flappy" thing that plasters the fabric to your leg some other wide-legs will do in the wind.
I have the favorite-fit in the Donegal Tweed from last year...they still remain some of my favorite pants for work and I always receive compliments on them!
ReplyDeleteAudrey: I like the matchstick cords, too! I bought two pairs at full price this year. I tried on the bootcut ones and they just looked awful on me. Even though I am pear-shaped, somehow the matchstick worked much better for me.
ReplyDeleteJ Crew's non-trouser jeans and cords run in a completely different direction to their pants. Whereas the fav fit pants are generously cut, the bootcut cords and jeans run 1-2 sizes small, (unless you're into the sausage casing look, which I'm not).
ReplyDeleteFor ladies who like the matchsticks-what is your figure type?
Has anyone tried or owned this years fall 08 matchstick jeans? If I'm a 28/29 in SFAM/Citizen/Paige, what size would be best for a not too tight look?
ReplyDeleteI have an typical hourglass figure and wear a size 4 in jeans/pants. But whenever I try on matchsticks, I feel like I gained 20 pounds - they look horrible on me.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE these trousers and, guess what-- the Factory store sells virtually identical styles for $80!!! (I say "virtually" only b/c in theory the clothes at the Factory stores ARE different from the clothes at "regular" J.Crew, even though as far as I can tell these trousers are exactly the same.) I bought three pairs a couple of weeks ago: dove gray, basic black and black w/white pinstripe. LOVE THEM-- they are already my go-to trousers for Fall! The only bummer is that the Factory wasn't offering any in that lovely camel color available at the "regular" store, nor did they have the vibrant pumpkin shade. They did, however, have a very cute brown plaid that I would have bought had I not already had a similar pair (from BR) hanging in my closet. Anyway, I highly recommend checking these out at the Factory store-- had I not, I probably only would have been able to afford ONE pair instead of THREE! (And, if you do go to the Factory store, I'd love to know if anyone here can discern the difference between the Factory version and the non-Factory version!)
ReplyDeleteaudrey: this was my first year to try on the matchstick cords, and I really liked them. However, I will wait for them to go on sale since I don't get to wear cords for many months - too warm here in SC.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE a wide leg! I just wish they made the wide leg cords (either fit, although I prefer favorite) in short. I don't have a JC card and never make it to a tailor (I have a pair of jeans that I've had for 2 months that need hemmed). So, I usually buy the favorite fit boot cut cords.
I love wide-leg trousers! I will try them on for sure, and perhaps buy a pair of each...Oh, my credit card...
ReplyDeleteAshley: Glad to hear that the matchsticks are good for pear shapes, too! I think it's all about trying things on... which can sometimes be a costly crap-shoot especially for Aficionadas without stores (me, now)... Ah, well. When it fits, it fits.
ReplyDeleteMath Teacher: I agree, close-cut cords in southern "fall" weather-- I used to live in TX... and can only shudder.
Anonymous at 5:11: I'm tall but there really isn't a figure type for me; I used to call myself the cucumber/eggplant. I took a 32 in the matchsticks when I usually do a 30 in J. Crew jeans. (So do agree with the different sizing that you brought up...) I mentioned that I have a high waist / no waist and not really any hips, but I do have a problematic stomach area. I just felt that the matchstick jeans gave me a better shape, sort of created a waist where I had none and gave me a better silhouette.
I actually don't like the matchstick jeans. I can't get rid of the weird material problem at the crotch.
But! This post just made me look at the matchstick cords. Deep indigo... I want....
Audrey: I will add that I *currently* live in Texas, and have not worn my matchstick cords yet, and probably won't be able to until November at the earliest! This is in addition to several wool cardigans, a cashmere sweater, a wool fiona that also sit patiently in my closet with tags on...
ReplyDeleteLike FabulousFloridaMommy, I am a huge fan of wide leg trousers. I have wide leg corduroy pants in Bright Blue from last season, also lighweight trouser denim pants. I am yet to try the current offerings.
ReplyDeleteOverall, this style of pants is very flattering on most figures, and the fact that it can be carried in many fabrics allows for almost endless possibilites- from casual to dressy.Love them!
3 penny princess - what a great review!
ReplyDeleteStopped by a Jcrew to try on the Favorite-fit stretch wool trouser today...Is it me or do other also feel that it shouldn't be called "wide-leg" trousers? I found them to be just a tiny bit wider than regular trousers...I don't think I'll be purchasing these.
ReplyDeleteI liked the Favorite-fit wool twill university pant better, especially with the cuffed hem. I found that my size is between a 0 and 2. Gotta figure out what to do about it.
AUDREY! Sounds like we are the same shape...I don't fit into any category either...BEFORE I had a child I was the tall, thin, boyish type but now...I have small hips (actually have some!)and a problematic waist area. I wear a 30 in JCrew jeans and a 31 in other pants or an 8....
ReplyDeleteWe need to think of a name for our body type!
Julie
In the hopes that someone from J.Crew bothers to read these comments, I am going to take this opportunity to reiterate a desire of mine that I have in the past passed along to customer service -- PLEASE start making your pants in 0-tall! I would never, EVER shop anywhere else if you'd do this! As it is, I only occasionally purchase 2-talls and have them tailored because they end up looking super-frumpy as opposed to sleek and chic (inevitable when the waist is being taken in but the rise/leg width stay the same). I KNOW there are other people out there with me. Please consider.
ReplyDelete0Tall is hard to sell, and j Crew is mass produced. I doubt it will happen. You should find a tailor, and have some clothes made. Either that, or give up the 5 inch Louboutins.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous @ 5:11 PM - I love the matchstick cords. I have straight hips, a round rear and medium (but straight?) thighs. Haven't tried the matchstick jeans to see if there is sa difference.
ReplyDeleteJulie- The "leftovers"? I still like eggplant. It explains how I'm tall but not thin or lean or boyish.
ReplyDeleteI own and love a wide variety of JCrew pants: the vintage trouser cords, trouser chinos, gabardine suit trousers, tweed trousers, super 120's suit trousers, etc. I find the city fit and the favorite fit to be both flattering and very comfortable. However, I must say that a) I wish that JCrew offered ALL of its pants in tall, as I need a minimum 36 inch inseam (and maybe offer some of these in B&M stores), and b) I am really dissatisfied with JCrew's jeans. I wish the jeans came in the same fits as other pants. I've found the bootcut jeans to gape at the waist and be too tight in the thigh (for me), and the boy jeans to gape at the waist and just look rather shapeless.
ReplyDeleteDo this years matchstick jeans suck in at the ankle? I know thats trendy, but it's just not for me. I saw a pic of a average sized lady wearing matchstick jeans, where the ankle sat slightly out and skimmed rather than sucked in. I think they were last years though. On the models on the website they look way too tight at the ankle.
ReplyDeleteHello - I recently discovered this blog and after reading through it, I have to say it really does have great members! Regarding the City-fit luxe cord trouser - I just noticed that they've been added in Petite sizes. I don't recall it being available in Petite originally.
