The moment I saw these pants online at J.Crew's website, I just knew it was a "love it or leave it" kind of item. ;) As LeoGrl6787 mentioned in regards to these pants (in the "J.Crew Email: The Long Cardi" post), "Whoaaaa!"
First, I love love love the cut of the university pant. I just adore the style of the wide leg that really does give a "longer, leaner, taller silhouette". :)
So where do I think these pants went wrong? Mainly the "shimmering, fluid fabric" which is described as: "Made with extrafine metallic yarns, it moves like liquid silver and has an unusually soft, silky finish. Italian wool with a bit of giveand silvery Lurex metallic threads." Liquid silver? To be honest, I don't even know what that term means. ;) I feel like the materials of this pant would draw unnecessary attention to my bum (when viewed from behind). This is something I definitely would not want my pants to do.
Overall, I much prefer the Favorite-fit wool twill university pant (Item 96135; Regular $139.50). I guess I am just plain boring in that I like both the camel and heather charcoal version way more than the liquid silver one. ;)
What do you think of the Favorite-fit silvered-tweed university pant? Do you like them or would you leave them? Do you own these pants? If so, please let us know what you think! :)
Disco Fevaaah! Oh yeah!
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, I'm not a fan of these pants. My guess is that it'll land in the final sale bin soon. So if you do like it, hold on for a bit before you make that purchase. Hold that trigger finger~
Not to body snark (I guess it's really snarking on the pants and not the model), but if those pants make the model's size 0 behind look like that, I shudder to think how my size 6 caboose would look.
ReplyDeleteYIKES! Very Studio 54! (and not in a good way) :O
ReplyDeleteJust put some tinfoil on her head and she'll be all ready when the TV signals go digital (no need for a converter box!)
ReplyDeleteUm, leave it, thanks.
ratsonparade, you're too funny.
ReplyDeleteUhm...yuck!
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I like these pants...I would have to see them in person but worn with a cute red or emerald green cashmere cardi on Christmas might look cute with black boots. I think all JCrew models wear their pants in most styles way too tight so I am sure these wouldn't bee to small in my correct size:)
ReplyDeletePerhaps the flash from the photographer's camera produces the "shimmer" in the fabric. I haven't seen these trousers in person but I think the fabric might be more muted in person than pictured. Like anonymous 2:31am mentioned, it might look cute with a classic cardigan and heels. Definitely best for a night out on the town rather than in the office.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan at all. Look like it's from the Matrix.

Way too garish for me and my butt, with the fabulous sheen of a hefty bag. Yech.
ReplyDeleteThose are pants best left to our future alien overlords, who presumably will have technology to make their butts look smaller.
ReplyDeleteI saw these pants on-line my immediate thought that they were expensive and ugly. Too much glitter!
ReplyDeletelove the material, hate the fit. can't do favorite fit, makes my behind look huge! and, unfortunately, i would have no where to wear these in my real life. leave it.
ReplyDeleteBeyonce called-
ReplyDeleteHer mom wants her pants back.
I agree, Alexis! The first time I saw the pic, I thought, "Wow, that is not very flattering for your butt." But I also think that the camera's flash might add an unattractive sheen to it and perhaps it is better in person? Has anyone seen the shark-skin skirts / dresses, which this kind of reminds me of?
ReplyDeleteI also think they could work for a Holiday Party...that being said, I'm not sure how flattering they would be on *normal* women, when they make the model look bigger than I'm sure she really is. I would hope the fabric would be more muted IRL...this is one time that the color difference between the picture and real life could work to one's advantage. :)
ReplyDeleteI love them from the front... I dont know if I like them from the back. Her butt kind of looks like a disco ball when she shoves it out that way.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I think they could be lots of fun for the holiday season--- especially a more casual New Years party. But I don't see them as an everyday or even every month pant. But they could be tons of fun
They remind me of that song my kids like to sing that goes "I see your hiney, It's nice 'n shiney, you better hide it..."
ReplyDeleteThe favorite fit alone makes them a no-go for me! I agree that they might be cute for a NYE party or something, but you couldn't wear them more than once, or you're "the girl that always wears those silver pants"! ;)
ReplyDeleteWhoa.....I can already picture how bad these would look on me!
ReplyDeleteThe material would draw attention to all the areas I like to hide, like my hips, thighs and butt. The fit looks great, but I would NEVER want to go out in public in that type of fabric!
ReplyDeleteUmm, no thanks - wrong decade! Where would I even where there without people laughing? Seriously?
ReplyDeleteI was looking at the silvered-tweed pencil skirt, and if you use the zoom function to get up close to the fabric, it looks much more muted than the disco-ball effect in the main pictures.
ReplyDeleteIt's not exactly my cup of tea (especially the pants) but I suspect the fabric in person might be much nicer than on-line.
I meant "wear them" - it's early!
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have the Navy Lydia? How do you like it in comparison to the Navy Elizabeth? What did your PS tell you to wear it with? THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteI picked these pants up yesterday and LOVE them. I will say this:
ReplyDeleteThey are very unforgiving. Best for those with a tight little booty or not much booty and thighs. You need to be the type that steps outside the box with your fashion. I plan on pairing it with a crisp white shirt (collar up), nice chunky necklace and my favorite sky high Christian Louboutin's.
Somehow the texture accentuates the butt. I dont even want to try them on to see what how big I would look.
ReplyDeleteI usually like jacquards or materials with texture on jackets and skirts.
This is definitely "leave it" for me.
I'm wondering if the sheen on these pants is more like the muted sparkly gold tweeds from last year's collection. I have those pants, and love them. I wear them in daytime, too. And I think having a really small rear end highlighted in tight & shiny pants would be worse than a bigger one. Ask any guy!
ReplyDeleteThe shiny pant is definitely a leave it for me!
ReplyDeleteBut I do love the Favorite-fit plaid university pant in deep indigo. Can't wait for the sale on that one!
I would like to see these pants IRL. I was shocked at the price tag (although not sure why I should be).
ReplyDeleteI do love jacquie's idea of pairing with a crisp white shirt (collar up), chunky necklace and her Louboutin's. I think that sounds fab. :)
hexicon: my thoughts exactly. If these can make a J. Crew model look chunky, just imagine what they can do for you!
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued (probably because I never lived through the disco age). If those are a bit more muted in person, I think it might actually work well, perhaps paired with a black turtleneck, black boots and a chunky blue necklace.
ReplyDeleteI like them - but I developed an interest in fashion during the disco era so I may not be the best judge.
ReplyDeleteI would wear them with a black sweater that was long enough to cover most of my butt.
I would never, ever tuck anything into those pants and I believe Spanx would be in order.....
I like a bit of metallic mixed in a tweed, but this is too much. It's kind of like fish scales.
ReplyDeleteThe skirt in the same material doesn't seem as bad as these pants. The skirt looks like it could be a little more forgiving...
Jacquie: Congrats on the pants! :)
ReplyDeleteJCrewJunkie: I would like to see these pants in person too- just to see what it looks like. :)
Some cool metallic looks from the fall 08 runways.
ReplyDeleteThe skinny leg version of metallic isn't bad, perhaps JC should have made it in the Matchstick Skinny leg style it would have looked better.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning on buying the skirt version of this material... I think they punched up the metallic sheen with lighting for the photos... it definitely looks more muted up close.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the pants are still a bit much for me. I love the skirt.
I would love to love these pants. Sadly, it's not even the fabric that is most unappealing to me - it's that darn high waist! That alone makes one's bum look larger, and add some metallic sheen and we're talking enough reflection to generate enough solar energy for my house for a year! The fabric looks enticing and I'd like to touch it, but maybe in a skirt, a ballgown, but not trousers. Ick.

helene:
ReplyDeleteThanks for the imput on the skirt. I actually really love the skirt, and I think that it would look better than the pants. Gosh, are they sold out in a size 0 already? I hope it's simply the website being screwy again.
Then again, I actually need the optical illusion of a larger behind that the metallic fabric imparts.
jcrewmama -- I like your name change ;-)
ReplyDeleteWTF??
