So many Aficionadas have commented on this particular jacket and already purchased it (congrats to Weab, kitsmommy, and others!), that it definitely needed its own post! :)
I have to say that I do love it! I have seen the coat in stores and I really like the material (which is a "refined wool double-cloth from a 100-year-old Japanese mill"). I am always attracted to coats with belts as they are a great way to emphasize a slimmer waist. I also love the trench style with its large lapels. My only concern is I am not sure how well it would be at keeping me warm during the cold New England winters.
Although I have not personally tried on the jacket yet, some Aficionadas have mentioned that the coat may need to be sized down. Lindsey B. (in the "Darlings, is it time for a J.Crew coupon code?" post) mentioned the coat was "too big through the bust and under the arms" for her and "is really kind of baggy in the torso. In fact, in the Trench in size 0 the shoulders were too tight, yet the coat was just way too big still". Anonymous at 6:11 PM (in the same post) also agreed that one would need "to size down! Even the 0 seemed huge in the body, despite the waist-cinching tie".
What are your thoughts on the Double-Serge Tuesday Trench? Do you "love it" or would you "leave it"? Are you currently considering the coat now that it is on sale (with an additional 20% off)? If you already own this jacket, please let us know what you think (in terms of style, color, warmth, and sizing)?
I love it! Then again . . . I'm a sucker for peacoats . . .
ReplyDeleteI think this coat is lovely. They only have one in my store and it's on the manequin so I haven't tried it on. It's interesting because there have been quite a few items where several people are recommending sizing down. I have been TTS for all these items! So for this coat I'd hesistate to order a 2 when I'm a 4. I really like the Bridget coat - it looks like a longer version of the Tuesday Trench and I may hold out for this one:)
ReplyDeleteI like a trench generally, but I know this would look bad on me. I have a smallish waist so I like the idea of a belt but I suspect after being gathered at the waist the fabric would be too bulky at the hips for me.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I looked at a lot of stuff in person at the B&M, and I've decided I just am not a fan of the rhubarb or persimmon in just about anything. I really wanted another color in the dream tie but the color of the rhubarb didn't look right to me. I prefer a true red, pink, or orange, rather than these reddish pinks and reddish oranges.
After MUCH contemplation, I am sticking to the Felicia coat when and if it goes on sale. I love the Tuesday Trench, but I think the gold buttons kinda age me a little, and also I have a bit of a problem with the *ahem* chest area (or lack of it :D). I want something more streamline and nothing fancypansy.
ReplyDeleteIf it looks good on you, then I guess you should just buy it, because $191.27 after 9% state taxes, discounts and shipping is a STEAL!
Although I was Tuesday-Trench-Trashing in a previuos post - I do think it worth mentioning that if you have a substancial bust line (jealous) then I think this coat would work ok for you. The navy trench was on my mental J Crew 'wishlist' until the Felicia came out. It's timeless - just not for the smaller-build lady :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with hexicon. Seems like every time I buy a belted coat, it just never drapes right after I cinch it. There's just too much gathered fabric on each end and I can't pull it off. :( I wish I could, though, as I think they are SO CUTE!
ReplyDeleteI just ordered the Persimmon in a petite 8 (tried on a 6 in the store, was generous and long, but only had a tank on so think will be tighter with more layers). Only paid $155 after 20% discount and free shipping!!!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 3:19am brought up a good point. For those of you who thought the Tuesday trench was too big, did you try it on with only a light layer? Will it fit better with a sweater underneath?
ReplyDeleteWhat is the color like on the deep persimmon - redish/orange or orangish yellow? Does it look like a neon sign? I kind of want something that is a little deeper and more classic, but I don't want the navy.
ReplyDeleteCute coat, but a pass for me because I have the khaki Tuesday trench. I do really like the look of the Dana coat in camel and will probably keep my eye on that one. I just love trench style coats!
ReplyDeleteI do have the Felicia and it is super cute! A bit more "classic" than the Ava jacket in the same wool pique from last season. I LOVE coats! Would like to know about the Aficionadas preference for fabric: wool pique, stadium cloth, double-cloth, wool/cashmere.
Hey, it is actually cool enough here (55 degrees this AM) for me to break out my beloved teddy-bear fleece pants from last holiday season. Why I did not buy multiple pairs of these, I'll never know! ;) Fall is coming!
I like this coat and considered it briefly yesterday but it just won't do the job of keeping me warm in my colder climate so I decided to pass. I have one long JCrew camel colored coat and while it is very nice for church on Sundays it is not my go to winter coat that keeps me warm!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of this coat, but my issues are: 1. not thinsulate, which means it won't be terribly warm (in terms of where I live) 2. would probably drown me 3. the red is too fire engine-y. But I do love how it looks on the model =)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to those of you who got this coat! I won't be getting it myself, but do think it's lovely in the Navy color. :)
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to get this in the Navy. The red is not a true red -- much more of an orange red. Pretty but not as versatile. It definitely needs sizing down -- bought a coat last year from J Crew in a 6 and the 4 is roomy enough for a thick sweater. I'm using it as a fall coat, no way for winter. I actually think most wool coats aren't warm enough for East Coast winters unless they're lined with the thinsulate and knee length. I thought it was very flattering on, the material drapes well and the belt cinches nicely. I'm using my private sale coupon on top of the 20% sale in store which makes this a happy $128.
ReplyDeleteI purchased this right when it came out, and I can't wait to wear it (it's only 41 degrees here right now, so I think sooner rather than later!) I wear an 8R or 10P generally, and while I used to size up in Petites, I think they may have fooled with the sizing there as well (without changing the size charts), because the 8P fits me like a glove. I purchased the 8P in Navy over the red phone at a B&M in order to get the 20% in-store apology discount they gave out many weeks ago. I love a trench, as it works really well with my figure, which is petite and well-proportioned (but slightly pear-shaped.) I think the Navy makes for a classic coat that I will be able to wear for years to come. I love the persimmon, but my long wool coat is already red, so I felt silly getting another red wool coat!
ReplyDeleteFashionista Social Worker
The persimmon is bright orange, there is nothing red about it. I couldn't wait to try it on after seeing it in the catalog but was extremely disappointed when I saw the color. Oh well, my search for a red coat continues...
ReplyDeleteI love the
ReplyDeleteHeavy-wool piqué Felicia coat 95841 too.
I obtained the length of the coat in the following sizes if anyone is interested:
"The measurement for the length of the Felicia coat #95841 (regular size) and #97801 (tall size) are as follows:
-regular size 6 is 28.75"
-tall size 4 is 30.5"
-tall size 6 is 30.75"
Ok, would anybody say that the deep persimmon is about the same color as the tartine sweaters (different fabrics at J. Crew really seem to be entirely different colors sometimes)? Also, I own the Lucille, would people suggest I size down from the size I bought the Lucille in? I live overseas so I don't have the option to try it on before buying final sale:(
ReplyDeleteI really do like it. I am not sure the pockets are well placed but then again I havent tried it on yet.
ReplyDeleteI dont find JCrew coats to be warn enough, ever. So I refuse to pay more than $100 for them. If it goes down to $99 I will probably buy it.
But I also don't need it.
I am successfully continuing my buying fast. Aren't you all proud of me?
I purchased the navy in this in a 2. I had originally ordered the persimmon in a 4. It was too big and is a really bright orange - not red at all.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that some here think this would be a bad choices for the small busted or small waisted. I am 5'4" and 120# with 33-27-38 measurements. I am very small busted and this was very flattering and did not have any more fabric around the waist on me when tied than it did on the model.
I did try the 0 and it was a good fit when wearing a tee, but it was too tight in the shoulders with a light sweater.
Also, the pockets are beautifully made and really well-placed. I am boarderline petite, and the sleeves could be a bit shorter, but I think the belt would have been off in the petite size.
After seeing this, the Felicia and the Greta, I am much more impressed with the trench and the Greta. I just thought the Felicia looked boxy.
I did get the Greta in a 4, if anyone is looking for size info on that. I probably could take a 2, but it would be a bit tight in the shoulders with a sweater and it is so swingy that it looked fine in the 4. And I have very small, slighly built shoulders, so I would say the Greta runs more TTS.
Wow, has everyone went to the JCrew Chatter blog? I hope you don't keep coupons to yourself in there!
ReplyDelete!just kidding!
By the way, the Greta is a much softer color and is very pretty.
ReplyDeleteBlumre: I am so proud of you! I wish I could be as strong as you! I have to wait 2 weeks until the new roll-out happens and I am getting the shakes just thinking about! Lol! :)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, most of you know I love this coat and foresee lots of wear from it. I agree with kitsmommy about the bust size not being an issue. I am not well-endowed but it still looks great. Also, about extra fabric at the hips, believe me I don't need any emphasis there either, but the coat doesn't seem to gather very much there. just my 2 cents.
OT, kitsmommy(and anyone else interested): I wrote this late last night in another thread : I received my sketchbook floral belle today and am so disappointed. :( I was really looking forward to this one since I love the print (still do). I have the paintbrush belle and love the fit of it. This one is not the same fit...too small in the same size 6 as the paintbrush. Also, the skirt is much fuller than the PB one. I laid them one on top of he other because I thought it may have been my imagination or just too many carbs today. ;) However, the sketchbook one is about an inch smaller in the waist, about 2 inches longer and about 4 inches fuller in the skirt (at the widest point since it tapers from the top to bottom, make sense?)
Anyway, it makes me look like an oompa loompa in a hula skirt! So it's going back! So sad. :(
jcrewjunkie: I responded to you yesterday but wasn't sure if you saw it. If not here it is again:
ReplyDeleteDid you buy the Trench? If so, what color? This one is a sure bet, no regrets, no second-guessing...it's just so classic! I think I'll be dressing my astrid down just as you said, jeans and a tank mostly. That's more my style. But I'll also wear it with a plain black skirt or nice black trousers for church and such. Have you worn yours yet?
weab: Haven't worn mine yet, but it is still pretty warm here. Darn. I tried it on with a tank, jeans, and a single strand of pearls the other day and it looked so awesome. Love, love, love it! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this coat. I have it in navy. I got a 6, which is the typical size I wear in coats, and the fit is perfect. Even my 13-year-old daughter thinks it rocks (and she won't look twice at anything that's not from A&F or Hollister)!
ReplyDeleteWeab, Thanks for the review on the new Belle. I am really sorry you were disappointed. I does look lovely online. From your description, it sounds like you need a petite size which I do not think they have in this one.
ReplyDeleteI'll let you know what I think about it when I get mine.
I have this in Navy and love it. The fabric is yummy, very drapey. It's probably great for more moderate climates. Not a deep-winter coat.
ReplyDeleteOT-OPINIONS PLEASE-THIS COAT AT NORDSTROM VS SAY FELICIA-

Thanks girlfriends!
OT-
ReplyDeleteGot the Indulgences Newspaper today--I am loving the OSLO handbag--that is GORG!!
anon @11:29: What is the price difference b/w the Felicia and the Coat at Nordstrom's? What color are you looking at?
ReplyDeleteKitsmommy, I will have to watch your fit posts because it looks like we're close to the same size. Do you sometimes wear petite?
ReplyDeleteMy concern was that if I cinched the belt at the waist, the skirt of the coat is so short that it would stand straight out from my hips (24" W, 38" H).
Maybe I'll reconsider if they release more colors.
On the Felicia coat... I ordered it in navy and was soooo excited to get it! I was disappointed when I got it tho... I love the fabric but felt that the cut was just off... I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it was the color. Mabye the pleats in back. Not sure, but I returned it - with sadness - I was sure that was going to be my winter coat ;). So, I am going to try the Greta. Let you know when it gets here.
ReplyDeleteblumre -- How many days strong are you? And is your fast from J Crew or all retail? I have been retail strong 11 days. If you count the exchange I did last weekend, then I'm 5 days strong. I've purchased from eBay, though. *shrugs* As long as I'm reducing overall and I am.
ReplyDeletejcrewjunkie: Did you buy the tuesday trench? If so, what color did you choose? just curious. btw, your outfit sounds great! :)
ReplyDeletekitsmommy: I'd love to hear what you think once your SB belle arrives.
OT: I'm thinking about the in-store only skirt that matches the abstract rose print dress. (I think it's called the Kandinski.) Does anyone have this? (Molly, if you're there today, maybe you can tell me.) I'm wondering about the fullness of the skirt and also what is the length of it? My store doesn't have it anymore so I can't try on. I just wonder if I'll have the same problem as I did with the fullness of the sketchbook belle. If anyone can review it, I'd really appreciate the info! TIA!
Just tried the coat on at the retail. The styled looked nice, and I really liked the plush fabric, but it just doesn't look right on me. I am petite and have an hourglass figure with a bigger bust. The fabric just billows out too much from the waist down.
ReplyDeletePlus I already have an navy cape and an ivory Sadie coat from J Crew last year that's similar in many ways.
I am keeping the orange Lucille I got instead. To the person overseas that asked, YES - size down one from Lucille. Size 8 on Lucille is just right on me, and 6 on the trench is OK with a light sweater on.
Weab, I tried on the abstract rose skirt and didn't like it at all. I think it was pretty long, but it didn't keep it on long enought to really remember. I know it was too long, too flared, too stiff and too busy. I think I would have liked it had it been more of a short pencil, but I pulled it off before I even had it zipped.
ReplyDeleteI like the pattern in the dress.
Hexicon, about 30% of my clothing is petite. Shorter sleeve blouses, tanks, and sweaters always fit me better in petite.
The fabric didn't stand out at all around the waist of the Trench. It fell very gracefully.
My best friend who is 5'0" and 115 and busty bought it today and she also purchased a 2. The cuffs rolled up nicely, so she didn't bother ordering a petite. However, I would say she has a proportionally long upper body.
Blumre: I am super impressed with your ability to resist a J.Crew purchase. (I, on the other hand, am too weak to resist). ;)
ReplyDeleteFFM-
ReplyDeleteReagrding the coats--i think I paid just over $115 for the Guess Coat and it is darling fit--has a lot going on versus the JCREW. Just wanted some opinions. :) THanks!
Anon @5:50: Fabulous deal on the coat, and it's really beautiful, too! I bet the fit is extremely flattering...did you get the color in the picture?
ReplyDeleteAfter much debate, I purchased this in navy.
ReplyDeletePros:
-I really loved the style...the gold buttons, the wide collar, the belt, etc.
-the fabric felt really nice...smooth and thick enough for a cool night in CA (this will NOT survive a Chicago winter)
-it was around $140 for me, since I was able to wrangle free shipping (I originally ordered this from a red phone, than had to shelf the order when I realized that I didn't have my new zip code), my student discount (since there was someone in the store to verify my student status originally), and the 20% off (since int he day between when this order was shelved and when I finally finished placing it on the phone, I found the coupon...AND it went on sale). Long story short, the price was too good to pass up.
Cons:
-the sizing is strange. I'm large-busted and tiny-waisted (32DD bust, 22 inch waist), and most jcrew size 0's will be a bit tight at the bust though loose at the waist. This was loose every where, even in a 0P. The extra material at the waist was also a bit puzzling...after all, it doesn't look good crumpled under the belt. I know that this will require some tailoring, but I figured that it's worth the extra $20 to make sure that it fits.
Thanks ladies, for the warning about the persimmon color. I was hoping for a red, but passed up on it when I realized that it's closer to orange.
Has anyone actually SEEN a GRETA in person--at their store?
ReplyDeleteI am CURIOUS about the look/fit--that is very pretty--esp that Ivory-WOW!
This is a leave it for me b/c there is no thinsulate.
ReplyDeleteGreta is catalog/internet only. The fit is wonderful in my opinion. It is very tailored in the shoulders and across the bust and swingy in the hips. I am 5'4" and the sleeve length and hem actually hit me at a better place than they do on the model.
ReplyDeleteI ordered a violet and a persimmon, but the violet was too purple in person. The persimmon in the double cloth is a pretty color as it is more muted than it is in some of the fabrics. Also, the buttons were not an exact match on the violet as they are more blue than the fabric.
HTH
kitsmommy: thanks for the review on the abstract skirt. Now, I think I may hold off on this until I see the new offerings next week. Thanks again!
ReplyDeletei'm glad to see i'm not the only one who thought this coat fit VERY oddly... i fell in love with it online (the "red") and was first disappointed to see that it was closer to orange, as some of you mentioned... and then when i tried it on to find that i was swimming in fabric around the bust, and that was a size 2. and it definitely wouldn't keep me warm enough to warrant spending the $160or so on it... even at that price. i wanted to love it though! :(
ReplyDeletei just picked up the tuesday trench on sale on my j.crew (palo alto, ca). the guy gave me the additional 40% off as well as my student discount on top of it so it came out to about 100. what a great great deal. i just love how it looks on!
