Item 97457
Regular: $398.00

This beautiful sweater-jacket has been purchased by many Aficionadas. I thought this definitely needed its own post since it sounds like it will be sold out soon. ;)

Sky (in the post "Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?") shared with us: "I purchased the cashmere butterfield jacket in gray and it arrived few days ago. It was expensive but I somehow justified buying it now. It came in a gift box with a garmet bag and a pouch of scented moth balls - I thought it was a nice touch. When I first took it out of the box I thought it would be way too small for me (size S) but when I put it on, it fit great. I like everything about it: the lenght, buttons, color, trim, and how soft it feels without loosing its shape. The only thing I am concerned about is the belt on the back. It has two buttons and even though they are light, they pull down on the sides of the sweater. I am thinking about removing them. Overall it is a great piece and I am seriously considering buing the orange one as well. With the second one I'll wait until it goes on sale :)"

Sky also mentioned (in the "J.Crew Stores: Additional 25% Off Final Sale" post): "I received the orange cashmere butterfield jacket yesterday. ...The jacket is beautiful but there are three things I discovered after examining it in person. One is the color. The orange is not as red as on the picture. It is actually closer to true orange, rahter bold, but I like it better this way. Second, on the picture it looks like the trim may not match the color of the wool, but it is not the case. The front trim (the wide ribbon) and the wool covered buttons match the wool color perfectly. It must have been the flash that changed the color. Third, the jacket has a dark pink (azalia) trim under the colar and on the inside behind the buttons and the wide ribbon. The pink trim has an orange sheen. I think the jacket is just lovely. I also have the gray one and love it as well. Both jackets are a bit shorter on me than on the model (I am 5'9) but they fit great anyway."

Lindsay (in the post "J.Crew Stores: Additional 25% Off Final Sale") said: "I just received my butterfield jacket in grey and wore it out last night!! i got so many compliments and it's SO soft and thick. i am very short (5'2") and it seemed shorter on me that i had hoped but i still love it anyway. People are mentioning final sale for this item but I talked to a CSR and they said it will just sell out and it most likely will never go on sale. So if you love this coat...i say it's totally worth it!! It's such a classic piece that you can wear for many years to come :)"

What are your thoughts on the Cashmere Buttefield Jacket? Do you love it or would you leave it? Are you waiting for this sweater jacket to go on sale? Do you think it will go on sale or sell out quickly? Do you own this sweater jacket too? If so, please let us know what you think. :)

  1. This is a very cute jacket...I would definitely invest in it but not in the orange. I guess this is one of those items that you really need to try on in the store too.

  2. Although I really DO like bold colors (the orange is STUNNING!), I believe that I would go with the gray due to it being a great neutral that would last for years and go with so many things! Either color, however, is gorgeous! Congrats to those who purchased these! :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. Congrats if you got this...I would get the orange but it is sold out in large and I wouldn't have been able to pay full price for it anyway...glad to hear it is so nice though:)

    ReplyDelete
  4. I love this jacket! However, I hate it's price tag! I just can't justify dropping that kind of cash on ONE article of clothing. (now, a handbag is another story.) If I were to take the plunge, it would definitely be on the silver because of its longevity.

Congrats to those of you who have it! I'm green. :)

  5. GORGEOUS but too rich for my blood. More power to ya if you can afford to have it right now:)

    ReplyDelete
  6. I agree with Weab...I LOVE this jacket, especially in the Gray! It's been on my wishlist, but I just can't bring myself to pay full price...congratulations to all of you who own it! :)

  7. Wow! I didn't realize how expensive this jacket was. It seems very beautiful. Prices surely have gone up. I bought a sweater jacket three years ago; a merino blend one, for $98, at full price. Also, I have a fleece jacket from L.L. Bean that looks very similiar, minus the top pockets and but with snowflake embroidery on it. I know that doesn't sound similiar, but if someone has polyvored this Butterfield jacket then I will have ideas for how to wear my Bean jacket.

    ReplyDelete
  8. j.h.: there are numerous Polyvore sets with the Butterfield...I think a lot of us really love it! :)

  9. I bought this in orange, but returned it. The orange is really beautiful, and material is heavenly. I just found it too "busy". With the pockets in the front and then the belt in the back. I probably would have kept it if it didn't have the belt in the back. Like one of the guest bloggers mentioned it pulls on the sweater. It is really beautiful. Congrats to those who kept theirs.

    ReplyDelete
  10. FFM: I will have to check Polyvore today! To anyone who owns the Butterfield; Congratulations on getting a cool jacket!

  11. I really like the style of this jacket, but worry about it stretching out. Does this jacket fit more like a jacket or more like a cardigan? Those who own it or have tried it on, does it feel sturdy enough that it wont' stretch out?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I considered this jacket, but 'nayed' it due to the awkward belt in the back. It's so sleek and chic, but that belt with the buttons just hung down oddly, and distracted from the look.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have to agree with many of you in that this jacket is (1) stunningly beautiful (love love love it!) and (2) too expensive at its current regular price for me. I would love to get this on sale though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. The belt in the back puzzles me. What purpose does it serve, if it seemingly just hangs and looks awkward?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wow - that is really gorgeous, and I bet it is so soft and comfy. Way too rich for my blood though. Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  16. In case anyone's looking for one I looked it up on ebay and paisley petunia is selling one for buy it now $279, silver medium, nwt. That's a lot cheaper!

    ReplyDelete
  17. OT--just placed a faux order online with no crewcuts items in my cart and the PEEKABOO code did take $25 off the order. Just about covered tax and shipping!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Does anyone know if the Cashmere shrunken shawl cardigan is available anywhere in New York? Even with the promo codes it's $110 with shipping, so I'd rather just pick it up somewhere. I haven't seen it at Columbus Circle or Rockafeller center.

    ReplyDelete
  19. OT: I'm debating between the dark gold and the soft graphite whisper lame' tank. Any suggestions??? Come on FFM....I know you have an opinion (and we have similar taste!!)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Love the jacket. I was looking at it the other day, thinking that maybe I should seriously consider getting it. But reality set in. I cannot justify paying full price for it. I will definitely buy it when it gets marked down.

    ReplyDelete
  21. leslie: I think they are both pretty, but I would purchase the Soft Graphite if I had the choice. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. sacre bleu! I will not be forking over $400 for this jacket - I'm just not that into it.

I just got my hands on the Oct. catalogue. Does anyone know if the french serge day coat, pg. 72, comes in other colors than bright saffron?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I supposed I would be the only one to say that I really dont like this jacket. Looks like something my 80-year old grandma would wear. Therefore, its a pass for me!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I didn't love this on me at the store. The orange was too vibrant for my red hair and the silver was too pale. It is cute though.

I just opened my FS cashmere hacking jacket from last year. What a beauty! I am so excited about this purchase now that I know it fits.

    ReplyDelete
  25. la belle helene: I don't believe the french serge coat comes in colors other than bright saffron. The coat is very chic but I cannot see myself wearing bright saffron in the fall. Seems more appropriate for spring.

As for the butterfield sweater jacket, I prefer the burrbery cashmere sweater jacket which is gray and is in the same price range.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks FFM!! You rock. I always value your fashion opinion (and actually, opinion, in general!!)

    ReplyDelete
  27. la belle helene: Unfortunately the Serge only comes in the Bright Saffron. I also LOVE that coat, but that color just does NOT work for me. Maybe the will have another color available with the Holiday rollout? That would be wonderful. :)

    Leslie: You're welcome! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. The jacket is nice, mid-weight, and soft. It's a bit limiting for me in this shade of orange though, but i like the grey a bit less.

La belle helene: i've seen the serge coat but only in saffron. It's very pretty and very bright. I would wear it during the day as its name seems to suggest and not in colder winter climate. It's very lightweight.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thanks all... and too bad that's the only color offered. More yellow from J.Crew - grr! It's just not a color I go to very often, and not for a pricey piece like this coat. I'd so love this jacket in violet or iris, just like I would have the lucille jacket. Why do they only give us one or two choices so often?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have a question that is not entirely on this topic. In the offer of 20% offer for orders with personal shopper that Jcrew rolled out in August, it states the offer is applied to "all your fall shoppings." Does anyone read it to mean that it applies to all fall full-priced items ordered through a personal shopper? Or the offer is only good until the end of August? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Tina, I believe that it was a one time offer only. I used the help of a PS to shop for a number of things and got 20% off my regular price purchases. She was really nice and offered to help me in the future but there was no mention of an additional discount going forward.

    Has anyone else heard otherwise?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Tina: As I recall the 20% offer with an appt with a PS was valid only through 8/29. I wish this discount was available more often.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love it in the grey. Just too pricey for me!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Leslie: I just purchased the Dark Gold Lame button down @ the store (for 40% off $29.99). It looks great under a navy cardi/sweater. I'm more partial to silver or soft graphite (silver goes better with my skin tone) but the dark gold, for the price difference & how good it looks peeking out at the top and cuffs of my sweaters is well worth the sales price.

You can phone in the order, probably for any color, & request the 40% off since it's being offered in the stores with this discount.

  35. Regarding the
Merino Paige jacket $198.00 item 98461
, which in no way compares with the Butterfield, in my opinion is not worth the price tag. I already knew this by the product description, and confirmed it after trying it on this afternoon. TOO MANY BUTTONS for me (6 to be exact)! Maybe it's not that many but they were a pain to get buttoned & unbuttoned. I anticipated it would be one of those 'everyday' sweaters to wear around but have removed it from my list (unless it gets down to $40.00). Just my opinion on something I had high hopes on (for some crazy reason).

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love the look of the butterfield jacket. I'll be tempted if it gets marked down.

On another note, I got my Metallic bouclé houndstooth Clea jacket in black today. I love this - even more than I expected I would. The fit is very tailored and flattering. The silver metallic sparkle is just subtle enough to add a bit of glamour without being over the top. It will look great with skirts and dress pants. However, I'm most excited to wear it with jeans and black boots. This is probably my favorite J.Crew item I purchased in the last 6 months. I'm glad I splurged on this one!

  37. OT-
    Couple questions-
does anyone have the YORK or KINGSTON driving mocs and like them, know how they fit etc?

Also-got my first pair of hip slung jeans from the sale (they fit great but I could only get them in short and it is PERFECT in length for flats. Are these gonna shrink too much and be too short?? Will I have to insist on hanging my jeans up to dry (I hate that cause they get very crunchy:) Thanks for any help!

Also review of awesome stuff I got from sale over the past couple weeks/month:

    *French Tie Cardigan-TDF!!
What more can I say--this piece is amazing!
*Polka dot popover blouse-very cute great price!

*Argyle cashmere vest (this thing looked giant when I pulled it out) wish I had gone to xs but I think
    I can certainly wear it.

*French Terry Hoodie in Oatmeal (sale version) SO COMFY CUTE but man I am SO glad I ordered both a sm and med as (I normally wear xs or sm in all J Crew) but the small is SO tight on my arms-which are thin--and narrow through my body --the medium fits great! Keep this in mind when ordering ladies.

*Bamboo tank in Olive--RUNS BIG but SO SOFT and CUTE-size down!

    *T-SHIRTS:
The sumiken grey T-shirt 94176 with white floral beading. DARLING but man is it scary to wear or think about washing. The fabric is so thin almost like pantyhose and it is hard to believe the beading/hand embroidery won't rip through it. It also snags super easy as the xsmall (which was tiny) came with a run in it right out of the bag!

*Grey T-shirt with orange beading 94177 is identical to this one-they are very fitted.

    * Seize the day in peacock blue cute and SO comfy plus shoe T-shirt, paint/art supply t-shirt, dog beaded t-shirt, ringspun flower t-shirt. IF need individual feedback on these-let me know.

*Martine cardigan in both pink and grey/green these are GREAT!
Both xs and sm fit fine--ones more roomy but can wear either size. They are so sophisticated with white shirt underneath

*Lifesaver cashmere short sleeve-need some fun ideas for this FFM (taking it away from nautical theme though:)

*The grey josephine velvet purse-surprisingly heavy clunky chain handle but looks cute.

*I got the Plum Berry Astrid in today and hands down it is GORGEOUS compared to the charcoal! I am selling the charcoal in sz 4 if anyone wants it.

*Metallic Clea Buttercup is GORGEOUS and great fitting. So sophisticated.

*Got white, pink and yellow flower ribbon tie belts over the course of the past month. All on various orders--so cute!

*And almost all colors of the ribbon rosette belts at 9.99-40%! They MAKE an outfit!

*Ordered the carrot color dream open cardigan. Thought should be great with watercolor floral lydia:)
*silver lame tank looks cute but haven't seen IRL-hope I like in person--is this flashy?
*Honey glaze and eggplant dream tie cardigan
*Hammered silk tank in rhubarb and some matchstick cords and white cropped jeans.

I SHOULD be dressed for life!!

  38. covert5: I have both the kingston and york flats. I think they run a bit large (so I sized down) and a bit wide. I fit both the 6 and the 7 but ultimately chose the 6's because my feet felt like they were sliding around in the 7's (because of the width).

    ReplyDelete
  39. The jacket is super cute, and seems to be right up my alley, but because of the pockets smack dab on each boob I'd have to try it on--sometimes boob pockets can draw unneeded attention to an already jutting rack! The price is also waaaaaaaaayyyy out there for me. It would have to be cut in half for me to even consider it.

  40. Hi Tammylee-Tell me more about that Clea jacket! It sounds divine. I was the one deciding between the Clea and the Penny. I'm sure by the time I decide they'll be sold out, lol. I am leaning toward the Clea, because of the heavy, yummy fabric. I'm happy for you. I too, had a vision of it with dark denim.

On a different topic, does anyone care to comment on the matchstick jeans in premium indigo? I've heard raves, even from pear shapes, so I'm just wondering.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love the French serge coat, but agree with FFM-- bright yellow as a coat is not the best color for me. I'd pretty much do any other color though... and just wear lots of layers underneath to make up for "midweight wool" = springtime in northern Europe-wear.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Tammylee-sorry, forgot to ask: Is the Clea 'workish'? Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Crew Girl and Anonymous at 2:41- Thanks for the input. I interpreted it to mean 20% off to all full-priced fall items as long as I made an appointment with a personal shopper before August 29. My personal shopper applied the code on two separate transactions, the last one made on September 19. Somehow, another SA volunteered her personal shopper service and she refused to honor 20%.

    ReplyDelete
  44. covert5: what did you think of the open dream cardigan with the watercolor lydia? I tried the two on, and it seemed a v-neck cardigan might work better. I like the print of this lydia, but haven't a clue as to what to match with it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. anonymous @6:47: I own the matchstick jeans in deep tone indigo, and I adore them! I am a pear shape, and I find them very slimming and flattering. I remember that the really really dark indigo color did not have as much stretch and created a bit of a muffin top when I tried them on, but I think they would stretch out in the waistband a bit after wearing them for a short time.

I love the matchstick so much that I also have the cords in 2 different colors. I highly recommend at least trying them on.

  46. I guess I'm alone in that I don't really see the big deal about the Butterfield jacket, and I do consider myself a sweater jacket fan. It didn't even catch my eye when I saw it on the website. Nor did the chiffon rosette merino cardigan. "Eh" is about all I can say!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ashley-thanks for your review of the matchsticks!

    ReplyDelete
  48. covert5: I agree with Melanie that the mocs run big. I just bought the Lizzie mocs, and the sa told me to size down, not up. She said that the mocs stretch, so sizing up (if you're a half size) can cause the mocs to become too big after wear. I wore mine today for the first time, and thought they were comfortable. They certainly didn't feel like they were a half size smaller than my normal shoe size.

    ReplyDelete
  49. cleo-
I haven't tried it with lydia as I haven't gotten mine yet. You may be right on about the opening and ruffles..hmmm. There are many great things to wear it with though--do not be afraid of Ivory, purple, tan, even say rhubarb (if that's the pinky/red that is in there). I cannot wait to get mine!

melanie-thanks for the shoe info--that helps A LOT!

Let me add--I was in my store today and tried the plum chiffon rosette merino cardi and was NOT impressed. The xs is SO tight in the arms (again--mine are not big and I usually wear an xs in the jackie for a fitted look) The small was okay but more boxy in fit. It is something I would consider on sale but not full price.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Actually, the store at Prince St in NY still has many sizes in stock. You know where to go now NYers.

    ReplyDelete
  51. cleo26: The print Lydia can be matched with several of the Jackie cardis. I have seen it shown with the Maple, Honey Glaze and Regal Purple ones. I have also seen it worn it with the Dream Tie Cardi in Snow and Honey Glaze. HTH.

  52. oooh - I wish I could afford this jacket right now - GORGEOUS!

    ReplyDelete
  53. lindsey b: I posted a question on my FFM Thread from this past Tuesday for you...if you get the chance could you please take a look? Thanks! :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Tigs: Thanks for the info on the Whisper Lame' shirt. I'll definitely call it in and get the discount, especially since my closest store is an hour away in Santa Fe, NM.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I would leave it. Too pricey ($200 would be more reasonable), and I know from past experiences anything over my chest area is not going to work. Plus the sleeves are full length, which means on me it'll be past my thumb.

On the PS 20% discount and french day coat. I did an advance sales through my PS in August and got the 20% off applied to my order. I just got a notification that the order was created so I am really anxiously awaiting the coat. I love the look they did on the fall look book where they paired this coat with the orange skirt.

I guess I'm in the minority - I won't wear anyting purple, but I have tons of yellow, orange or flame colored items.

    ReplyDelete
  56. anon @ 6:47: I'm still loving my Metallic bouclé houndstooth Clea jacket - it's stunning. The fabric is very soft and medium weight. It's very tailored/cinches in a bit at the waist. The jacket is cut short - hits at my hip or a little above. It's fully lined in a silver/gray color.

This jacket could definitely be appropriate for work (office/professional environment. The great thing is that you can also make it very casual - which is good considering the price.

I don't think you'd be disappointed with this jacket.

  59. Julie-

I do love it! It is SO pretty! The only fault I am finding for myself in this is that I wish I were able to wear it more open like a cardi but my bust doesn't seem to allow that. it kinda pulls away and lays back funny--I think due to the weight of the trim/berries. It's not the end of the world but I do feel like I don't want to always have it buttoned up--I am casual so planning to wear with jeans and such. What about you--how do you plan to wear it? BTW-what are you doing up at 4:45am:)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Tammylee-thank you for your comments on the Clea-it definitely helps me decide!

  61. Covert5, Hi, I live in the U.K. Just a few hours a head of the US! ha ha:)

I plan on wearing mine casually b/c at present I am a stay at home mom:)

Jean, fun t-shirt, etc. I prefer my jackets buttoned but I may try the unbuttoned thing...I am smaller busted so I think it will be OK for me...I almost did not buy this and I can't belive how much I LOVE it:)

  63. I ordered the Butterfield in orange and couldn't wait for it to come. It really is lovely and the cashmere is very soft and lofty. BUT, I returned it today. I just felt that it wasn't worth the price tag. I would definitely get it should it stay in stock until it goes on sale, but I just couldn't justify the full price. I have a cashmere sweater from last season jc in the same price range that I bought almost immediately when it came out and I never regretted paying full price. Just didn't feel the same with my orange butterfield.
