Meet Marissa's Jacket {it's not J.Crew!}

In the February 15th "Meet Marissa..." post, J.Crew's Head of Women's Design Marissa Webb was touting J.Crew's Lambskin Motocross Jacket (Item 38891; $895.00) while wearing another retailer's jacket. Which was a bit confusing at first. Many of us, including myself, initially thought the jacket she was wearing was the one being referred to in the email. Many of us, including myself, fell in love with Marissa's navy jacket and desperately searched J.Crew's website to no avail.

A big "thanks!" to xoxo (in this post) who shared the following news with us:
... I had a stylist do some digging for me and they contacted J.Crew to confirm that this is Marissa's jacket from the "Meet Marissa" email.

Apparently she had the sleeves shortened, which I don't understand, but maybe she likes bracelet-length sleeves. The J.Crew rep said that there were quite a few inquiries about the jacket so maybe they will make a similar version for F/W.

Anyway, I bought the jacket while I was on my European trip last week and wore it quite a bit, it is really lovely. Just wanted to pass on the info since there was a bit of speculation around it last week.
So the mystery behind the jacket is revealed: it's the Joseph's Navy Emmanuelle Double Breasted Jacket (Item 152090; $739.20).

I would definitely be interested in seeing J.Crew's version for Fall/ Winter, if they decide to make it.

What are your thoughts on the jacket? Do you think J.Crew should offer its own version? Do you think it's weird or okay to wear a different label while promoting another one? ;)

  1. If JC makes its own version, it had better not cost $739.20, because I won't be interested. :)

  2. I agree! Great jacket which I would love in my closet but the price tag is outrageous. I could go to London for a weekend with the 795 dollars.

  3. Rose, LOL!

I am fortunate that my office went to a business casual dress code due to the economic downturn - it was their way of giving us a financial break - so now I don't need to wear a suit every day. Even so, I do try to buy a couple of good suits or at least top quality suiting pieces each year so this is an investment piece for me. I wore it as outerwear on my trip as well, it can do double-duty for spring or fall weather.

I love the classics and harp on about them frequently but I feel it's totally justified given the cost/wear. J.Crew could definitely knock this off and make a quality piece like the Bella, Lexington, Ecole, Schoolboy, etc. that we will all buy if given the opportunity. It's a classic look and in decent-quality wool could be available for a reasonable price in lovely colors. I hope. ;^)

  4. She couldn't even be bothered to wear a J Crew jacket in an email trying to sell J Crew jackets. Not a good move. Especially when J Crew tries to sell clothes at a similar price point.

  5. Thanks for sharing the info, xoxo! I too find it funny that Marissa isn't wearing the jacket that the email is referring to. But, that navy blazer is right up my alley - classic cut and detailing, double-breasted...I'd do what Marissa did and hem the cuffs (I'm short-limbed and find 3/4 sleeves flattering). Realizing that the price point isn't for everyone, there's a lot to be said for classic tailoring. Like xoxo says, let's hope JC comes up with their own version that suits our pocket books.

  6. That's lame. If I receive an email from J Crew about J Crew, I expect people in the photo to be wearing J Crew. In case lame is not pc, I'll say it's stupid that the jacket isn't even a 3rd party vendor.

I do like that she tailored it and that's something I'll have to remember when I try things on. If it doesn't come in petite, I don't always think to get things altered. However, a sleeve, even if it's lined, is usually not too difficult or expensive.

  7. J. Crew did make something like this in Fall 2007 called the Wool Oxford Jacket. It came in Liberty Blue and an orange color. I get compliments every time I wear it but I save it for special occasions because it's such a statement piece.

If they remake it, I hope it's the same nice plush wool and a much more affordable price point than the one Marissa has. Way to drum up buzz around another brand when you're trying to sell your own merchandise J. Crew!

  8. Thanks for the information on the jacket xoxo! :)

  9. I love the jacket and would purchase a similar one at a more reasonable price point.

I will admit to purchasing one of my Maggie jackets at full price, but even if I wore this 50 times, it would still be nearly $15 a wearing. Ouch.

I do think it is completely lame that she didn't wear a J Crew jacket in an email about a J Crew jacket.

  10. I love that Blazer as well XOXO a big congrats on tracking it down and your purchase.

I think it was a horrible move JC's part not to have her wear the jacket she was promoting. The buzz here on JCA was ALL about a non JC item.

Even when you go into a B&M they are all wearing JC items.

Thought it was a bad bad move....

  11. Good sleuthing, xoxo! It is a very pretty (and classic) jacket.

  12. It's a cute jacket, but I coudldn't for the life of me figure out why she wasn't wearing the jacket she was promoting. Or at least a JCrew jacket. At first I thought they'd used either the wrong photo or wrong copy in the email. Guess not.

  13. I know it is unrealistic to think that the gals who work at Crew wear the brand head-to-toe all the time, but in a brand-specific promotional e-mail NOT to have your main focus piece be by Crew? A big oversight, IMO.

That said, I'd love a Crew version of that blazer, maybe in some bright fun colors? I love the classicness of the piece, yet how modern it fits.

  14. Hi silver_lining. The stylist did all the sleuthing and had the jacket delivered to my hotel room for free, although I did purchase it through her so she must get some kind of credit for that.

Love your new pic BTW. Had to view it full size to see the detail. LOL

  15. It's a cute jacket but out of my price range and would be nice if JC would do a remake with lower price point.
I just got the wool oxford jacket from a fellow JCA and I'm happy since this is a similar style.

  16. i think i already mentioned that i love the jacket and marissa's entire look. i did like the jacket that j crew was promoting too. i dont think we cant expect that every email j crew sends out about an item the person attached to it will be wearing it. I just assumed it was a "head shot" that all the executives have. Might be confusing and not the very best PR move in this case.

i would also love a version for j crew that fits my wallet.

  17. jojo, I agree that we can't expect the J.Crew designers to always wear their own creations. Do other designers do that exclusively? And maybe not in this case of wearing another jacket to promote a J.Crew jacket, but part of the J.Crew party line that Jenna Lyons often mentions and demonstrates is that J.Crew pieces can be mixed with high or low end and what you already have in your closet.

I don't always like what Jenna Lyons or Marissa Webb wear but I am always intrigued to check it out.

  18. xoxo -i totally agree. That's what i love about Jcrew. That you can mix and match. I do think Jenna and Marissa both do it very well.

  19. As xoxo mentioned the economic downturn as affected me and everyone I know. I will stick with my Navy Schoolboy Blazer, it has essentially the same look and feel to it and noone but the seriously fashion concious (5% of people, and I live 10 mins. outside of NYC) will notice the single/double breasted difference.

  20. There is a photo of Alexa Chung wearing this jacket on Net-A-Porter today. Click here.

  21. It just occurred to me that everyone working at J Crew HQ probably walks around with their pants or skirts slung low on their hips and their jackets or sweaters all with bracelet- or 3/4-length sleeves. And they all stand nonchalantly slouchy. :)

I don't think that the J Crew people need to always wear J Crew, but for an email to the customers it seems extremely improper to be wearing another brand! Something tells me this was a mistake.

  22. I received a Loft mailer today and it appears they have a knit jacket similar to Marissa's - for $80. I can't find it yet on the website, but the style number is 251356 if anyone is interested :)

  23. xox, thank you for digging and sharing (I was dying to know).

It looks like they made a jacket in the same style for spring, in what seems to be a cotton or linen Prince of Wales (can't see very well). It's on slide 23 in the Style.com Spring Preview (clic here and then clic on slide 23 towards the end. Maybe the navy version is coming in Fall?

  24. Strange. When I looked at that e-mail, my first thought was, "that jacket does *not* look like leather," but I didn't realize that it wasn't even the jacket that was advertised.

I have the wool oxford jacket that nomoneynofun mentioned. The blue is absolutely beautiful and I love it, but I've only worn it a few times. I'm feeling inspired to find it and wear it again.
