Meet Marissa (& log-in to see if you got free shipping!)

"Thanks!" to so many of you, including Desert Flower, xoxo, IRL, Kathryn, as well as Miss Penny Z, mommydearest, newyork0311, jbird, GigiOfCa (in this post), who shared the following email that J.Crew sent customers today.

The email features J.Crew's newest top executive, Marissa Webb (Head of Women's Design) as well as J.Crew's Lambskin Motocross Jacket (Item 38891; $895.00).
This is one of those limited, extra-special J.Crew Collection pieces we design that I cannot stop thinking about until I've happily snagged one for myself. Our motorcross jacket is a standout piece in luxurious lambskin leather from a premier Italian tannery that has additional cool details like patch pockets and zips at the wrists. As one of our best customers, I wanted to pass along this gorgeous item before it's available in our 1035 Madison Avenue Collection store or through our online lookbook. It's exactly the kind of iconic investment piece you'll wear today and 10 years from now- I know I will. Click here to see it.
Moreover, the email announces a new promotion for free shipping when select customers log-in to their J.Crew accounts. There are two types of emails floating around.

One email is for a one-time unique code for free shipping (no minimum) that can be used at any point until 2/28/11. The fine print for this offer is:
*Offer valid on purchases made online at jcrew.com only through February 28, 2011, 11:59pm ET. Enter code XXXXXX at checkout to redeem. Offer is valid for one-time use only and cannot be applied to previous purchases. Discount may not be applied to the purchase of gift cards, bridal gowns, vintage and one-of-a-kind items or third-party branded merchandise and may not be redeemed for cash. Discount code cannot be used in combination with any other promotion. Offer is valid on orders shipped in the U.S. and Canada only. Offer not valid on purchases made in J.Crew retail or J.Crew Factory stores. Terms of offer subject to change.
The other email is for unlimited free shipping (no minimum) for a certain amount of time. The fine print for this offer is:
*If you don't have a registered account, call our special access line at 800 XXX XXXX and they'll set one up for you. Previous purchases are not eligible for this offer. Free shipping offer valid through February 28, 2011, 11:59pm ET on orders shipped via regular shipping (3 to 6 business days). Free ground shipping is applied automatically at checkout. Cannot be combined with any other promotion.
Thrilled to see this promotion return. Sad that I am not one of "the selected" to get either promotion. Ah well! Maybe next time.

What are your thoughts on the Marissa Webb email? Did you get the promotion for free shipping too?

  1. Amazingly I did receive this e-mail! Excited about the free shipping, but am hoping that there are new rollouts soon. Nothing I'm dying to have right now at full price.

I like Marissa, but I don't love the leather jacket . . .at least not for $800+. But I'm more of a blazer girl. :)

  2. I got one with a code. Unfortunately there's nothing that I really want right now!

  3. Cute outfit on her. I think the leather jacket is great, but I prefer a collar to collarless looks. Collarless is more conducive to a hoodie, which is something I guess.

Happy to have free shipping thru the end of the month.

  4. I really like these free shipping codes with no minimum offers. Keep them coming JCrew!

I used the one I got last time but final sale wasn't going on at that time.

I got one with a code this time just like last time.

I hope the final sale goes away before it expires. If not, there isn't anything I want b/c the one item I do is final sale and I just won't chance it!

  5. Very confusing email that as you Alexis I didn't get. Why did they choose a picture of Marisa wearing a non descript blazer that is not the jacket featured in the email (and that she proudly snagged for herself as she says)?
Anybody found out what that blazer is (probably not the intended effect of the email to create a buzz on a jacket that is not Jcrew for what we know)?

  6. No e-mail -- not surprising, though, because I NEVER get any e-mails from JC unless I order something or contact CS.

  9. Sorry, my inner nerd couldn't help but get stuck on the dangling modifier in her sentence: "As one of our best customers, I..."; in essence, calling herself one of her best customers...unless...that was what she meant...?

    Anyway, done overthinking :)

  10. Nope, no email for me either (so no free ship). Not surprised, I've been trying to sign up for emails for the last 2 years and I have had no success whatsoever. On the other hand, I was mailed a white card with a VIP phone number, which I recall, was blogged about here before. Better late than never, I guess?

  11. JCrewJunkie: I absolutely agree with you; that drove me nuts, too! I'm a senior writer/editor, and all I could think was that I wish I could get a job editing J. Crew's text, so that I could afford $800-plus leather jackets. :)

  12. Leah and JCrewJunkie --

Exactly! I can't believe that high-paid designers and their minions get away with grammar like that! Leah, have you ever sent an email to a company over an illiterate message like that, offering your services?

I'm sorely tempted all the time.

  13. I think that's a typo. In the first image it says, "as you are one of our best customers, I..."

  14. I received the email with the one-time use code. Hopefully this will be an on-going thing again, so those who missed out this time could possibly get an offer next month. :)

  15. When I look at her jacket all I can think of is missing brass buttons!! It reminds me that I have to take my stadium cloth peacoat, which has now lost two buttons, to the tailor to have the buttons sewn on better.

  16. Fiddle, Leah, jcrewjunkie: another case in the annals of The Copywriter from Space Strikes Again. When will it end? Next week's episode: The Copywriter from Space installs Thesaurus 1.2 (the Tonedeaf Edition). Be afraid. Be very afraid.

  17. Didn't get this email and I'm annoyed.

  18. When I don't receive a code, I do a quick scan and realize there's nothing I wanted in the first place. Thanks for training me not to be impulsive, J.Crew!

  20. newyork0311, thanks for pointing that out! leah and fidele, i'm glad you noticed it too. A couple of years ago I sent them an email about grammatically incorrect text in one of their catalogs (I think), and the response I got was pretty much along the lines of, We know, but we've already printed them, so it's too late.
    I tried! :)

  21. Wow! Totally agree, jcrew editors really need work!
I actually like this jacket, but i prefer marissa's personal style. she always looks chic.
