JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

Preface: A big "thanks!" to Elaine (in this post) & Himmiefan (in this post) who both suggested a weekly "Help Style Me!" post about getting outfit advice from the JCA community. I think it is a fantastic idea. Hopefully this will help out our fellow JCAs with those hard-to-work-with J.Crew items! :)

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Could anyone give me styling ideas for a black cashmere tee dress? I've worn mine over skinny jeans since it's rather short and a bit sheer to be worn over only tights/leggings.
Also, what type of belt would you suggest if worn belted? TIA!

  2. I would love any ideas for the goldenrod brocade blouse. How do you dress it down? What colors have you worn it with? Thanks so much!

  4. To jcrewphd,
Do you have a longer black slip? Sometimes I have extended the length of a dress by wearing a slip that peeks out a little. Then add some tights and tall boots and it might not seem so sheer and short. As for a belt, sometimes I hook two skinny belts together and wrap it around my waist a few times. If you have a flower pin you could pin it to a ribbon belt or sash. Good Luck!

  5. Robin, I wore that brocade top with dark skinny jeans and tall brown boots when I went out to dinner in NYC. i thought i was looking mighty fine if i do say so myself! :) i haven't worn it again, though, because it's just been so cold here. :/

  6. Argh, I am so forgetful today. I wanted to share a snippet from something I saw on a mannequin in the Crewlet earlier this week.

Always looking for something to wear with my contrast-stitch perfect shirt (the blue one) ... the Crewlet version was styled with an Avocado-colored Jackie tied at the waist and white shorts. I don't have a Jackie in that color but I do have a Melanie, and a white mini or white skinny jeans would be a nice stand-in for shorts for work.

Anyhoo, just thought I'd share; the color combo was very springy and pretty. It also keeps that greenish0yellow away from my face, as it just doesn't work too well with my skintone.

Also saw whilst perusing blogs yesterday a pairing of a black and white striped tee with a mustard-y skirt on the bottom ... loved it! Kinda was hoping to see a lower price on the Reve tee so I could pair it with my Ochre double-serge skirt before it gets too warm here to wear it anymore. That's another color I love but it's got to stay on my lower half.

I stand by my prediction of an extra % off promo tomorrow, so we shall see. ...

    HTHs someone! :)

  8. Robin, I love that top with dark purple or plum. I've worn it with a cardigan in that colour over top and it looks really good. You can also belt it.

jcrewphd - what about trying it over a slightly longer skirt? Same idea as the slip mentioned by ebe. I'd also wear it with black leggings and boots. I would wear a big chunky belt with it.

  9. Robin - I have the goldenrod brocade hanging with a dark charcoal Factory schoolboy over it and a brown & gold chunky bead necklace. I planned on wearing it w/jeans and flats. Our weather has been a tad warm for that, but I'll probly be able to wear it soon.

Also have worn it with the souffle (?) wool boucle ruffle jacket from Anthro, purple scarf and J Crew cobblestone stretch vintage cords. Will try to remember to come back and drop the link when I post pics on my blog.

  10. Thanks ladies for the ideas. I've never thought of wearing a slip under. I'm now going to have to look for long black slip. ;-)
