J.Crew Sweater Sale: 20% Off for Men, Women, & Crewcuts!

"Thanks!" to many of you, including JSR (in this post), who shared the latest promotion from J.Crew with us.

J.Crew is offering 20% off select full-priced Sweaters for Women (click here to shop online) and Men (click here to shop online), as well as Crewcuts. This offer ends Tuesday, March 19, 2013. The fine print includes:
*Discount valid on the purchase of full-price sweaters in J.Crew stores and at jcrew.com from March 16, 2013, 12:01am ET through March 19, 2013, 11:59pm ET only. Online prices are as marked. Offer not valid in J.Crew Factory stores or at jcrewfactory.com. Offer cannot be applied to previous purchases and cannot be redeemed for cash or used in combination with any other offer. Offer not valid on third-party branded merchandise. Discount on in-store purchases will be automatically applied at the register. Offer valid in the U.S. and Canada only. Terms of offer are subject to change.
It is nice to see this offer being extending to both online and in-stores. My top pick still is the Crystal Necklace Sweater (item 86132; $148) now on sale for $118. I already love the color combination of rugby stripes in navy and emerald green. The crystal built-in necklace is a beautiful bonus!

In addition to the sweater sale, there are some other noteworthy in-store promotions at J.Crew:
  • 20% Off Women Tees & Tops {"Thanks!" to PeasAndCarrots & kitchy7 (in this post)}
  • 20% Off Cece Ballet Flats {"Thanks!" to kitchy7 (in this post)}
  • 30% Off Sale {"Thanks!" to ruffles & kitchy7 (in this post)}
It seems that the terms for the educator / student discount has been changed once again. As mentioned earlier in the month (refer to the "J.Crew's Student & Educator Discount {downgrade?}" post), it looked like the discount could no longer be applied to merchandise with any other additional percent off (like 30% off sale). According to many of your recent experiences, including Knit Yarns & ruffles (in this post), J.Crew will once again stack the discount on top of an additional percent off. Yey!

Will you be taking advantage of this promotion? Are there any Sweaters you are interested in getting? Is your local store offering additional promotions? Were you able to apply your student & educator discount in addition to a percent off? If so, please share!

  1. Honestly, all the whining about the student/educator discount bothers me. A lot of people in public service jobs make less than teachers and do not get any discount. District attorneys make a lot less than school teachers and need to look polished and professional. As for students, many are financed by their parents. So consider that many people do not get any special treatment at all next time you complain about a store not stacking your student or educator discount. Just be thankful that you get a discount.

    1. Flower Power: Sorry to upset you. I think it is a really nice gesture for J.Crew to offer a discount to student and teachers. I also felt like it was important to let other JCAs know about any changes- so they know what to expect. :)

      Relating to this topic... I know there are other businesses that offer discounts to various groups (for example, senior citizen discount to museums and public transportation, military discount for USPS). The businesses might not be able to extend it to everyone- but it is appreciated that they do make those offers to some of their patrons. :)

    2. I personally do not qualify for a discount, so it doesn't affect me much, but I do not agree with Flower Power about students. I work in the financial aid dept. of a college. Most college students are not financed by their parents, at best a portion of their school is paid for by a parent or scholarship. So most have to pay some amount in tuition. Usually, a student can only work part time while going to school full time and this money covers their food,rent etc.leaving very little money for clothes. Even if the student lives at home, if they owe on tuition and books, part time pay is not going to buy a lot. Probably more than anyone they can use the discount!

    5. I was just expressing one opinion. I do not begrudge anyone. I appreciate you letting people know about policy changes. And I understand how unevenly applied policies can be annoying. And I am sure my post annoys people too : )

    6. I don't think there are many place where the district attorney is making less than the teachers. According to payscale.com, the median pay for DAs is $67,898 with the range going from $44,000 to $149,000. The median pay for teachers is $44,207, with the range going from $30,000 to $68,000. From my own personal experience, I am a teacher, working a 70% contract, making about $28,000. My brother is a part-time district attorney, billing about 10 hours a week, and he is making $30,000.

      Which basically means that I am working about 30 hours a week for $28,000, and he is working 10 hours a week for $30,000. I love my job, but please don't try to tell me I'm making more than a lawyer.

    7. I don't want to appear to be nitpicky or anything, but starting salaries in Massachusetts for full-time assistant district attorneys and public defenders is less than $40,000 per year. Salaries obviously vary by state, but I know for a fact that there are plenty of public school teachers making more than public sector lawyers. Again, I don't begrudge J Crew offering this discount but generalizations that lawyers ALL make more money is inappropriate.

    8. Flower Power, I appreciate you offering your opinion. I would like to offer you some food for though, hoping it can help you feel less upset. I went to a top tier research university (public) and many of us did not get a dime from our parents. Many came from underprivileged families. I, for one, put myself through college working three jobs simultaneously while taking a full time course load. I am now in graduate school and my fellowship is as close to living below the poverty line as it gets. Since I represent the university with students and at conferences, I have to look polished (and also because I need to sell myself to potential employers). My friend just graduated from a professional school with $250,000 in debt. So while I can choose to shop elsewhere, my money is as good as everyone else's at J Crew. I appreciate the discount and don't take it for granted, but it also influences my decision to shop there. I can only afford it with a percent off and student discount, but that's just my two cents. Oh, and the stress of a doctoral program makes my weight fluctuate, so I am usually in need of clothes on a regular basis. I hope this offers a different perspective on why some of us were upset.

    9. As a government lawyer, I can't resist entering the discussion. Might I offer a more cynical explanation -- by offering this kind of discount, is J.Crew really trying to groom the next generation of consumer? The student who will likely become a long-time shopper, and the teacher who (perhaps and hopefully?) influences the student. This obviously doesn't necessarily apply to all educators, but I think this group is the core meant to benefit from the discount. It just can't be a means test...there are lots of people who make less than teachers.

    10. I apologize if my comment does not reflect the spirit of this lovely community.

      It is nice that j.crew and Massachusetts hold teachers in such high regard.

      I do not mind the discount... Even for students. As I noted, some but not all receive help.

      But I wish people appreciated more. You are lucky to have it.

    11. Flower Power, as you can see, it's not a good idea to make sweeping generalizations about the perceptions and circumstances of people you don't know.

      This is a forum for people who love J. Crew. Consider that the volume of discussion about the educator's discount among JCAs is precisely because it IS appreciated and in fact, relied upon, by many who post here.

    12. FlowerPower expressed her opinion and I believe it's unfair for her to be "scolded" as the above poster just did for doing so because it's an opinion that differs from yours. It doesn't lessen her appreciation for JCrew any less and that is why we are all here.

    13. JCAs have different store experiences. One day the discount applies. The next it doesn't. Or it applies on this, but not that and only if the moon is full and Mars is in retrograde. It has to be frustrating and embarrassing to take something to the register thinking it will be a certain net price and it's not. Esp for someone working with a budget and trying to stick to it. I think that's part of the frustration some JCAs are expressing. Not just that the discount can't be stacked, but that J Crew has flipped and flopped on the terms of the policy the entire time they've offered it.

      I don't have the student/educator discount and sometimes it annoys me anyway. I can't speak for others, but I think the way J Crew handles it is a huge issue and speaks volumes about their lack of good/efficient communication within the company.

    14. Gigiofca ... thank you for your always-spot-on points.

      Please allow me to clarify: my comment was in no way at all a criticism of Flower Power's opinion, and I, too, am sorry about the inequity of these discounts!

      My issue was with the statements that "District attorneys make a lot less than school teachers" and "As for students, many are financed by their parents." I didn't feel those were fact-based or relevant to the discussion of the policy application, and that is simply MY humble opinion.

    15. I was in my local Jcrew today and asked if the educator discount could be stacked on top of the 30% off sale price and was told no. When I said that I had read online that it had been reinstated, the manager printed off a memo that said that it couldn't be stacked on a store wide discount on a whole purchase. When I said that the inconsistency between stores and policies drove me crazy, the manager said, "Oh, just give it to her" with lots of attitude. At that point I was not going to make the purchase, but as I was doing a return, she called someone who verified that the educator discount on sale items had been reinstated. She then acted mad at me that she had been wrong. I thanked her, made my purchase, and would love to never shop in store again - but likely will since it's the only Jcrew in my area. I'm tempted to write to Mickey but then I'm afraid she'd treat me even worse!

    16. I think it is pointless to feel annoyed about others complaining about stacking student discount.

      J Crew is honoring teachers and students by giving them a discount. While it may not seem fair to other professions, there are many other retailers out there that are less expensive than JCrew, like Gap or Old Navy. Therefore, if one is making less than a typical teacher and is not getting a discount, there are many other choices available in the retail world.

    17. @Ruffles - I didn't take offense to any of the points here or hold any particular judgement of any them. All valid & worthy discussion :)

      In my comment, I forgot to add that the lack of clarity on the part of J Crew SA's leads to situations *juuuust* like Debby shared. Some of us would suffer enough embarrassment to be informed the discount didn't apply. What makes it 100x worse is the way store personnel -- esp the mgrs -- will sometimes treat customers that ask for clarification. Many of us are committed to giving our money to J Crew. Lots of it. There are many things I love about J Crew, but these incidents chip at my trust in the company. A good number of companies are competing for our dollars. Why should it be difficult for me to turn my money over to any of them? Companies are making shopping easier and J Crew stumbles at times in this dept. A good recent example are cardholder perks! Not!...for everyone. Just select cardholders.

      Now if Mickey would just ring that bell on his bike, deliver the current policy over the loudspeaker and an assistant record & deliver it in a succinct fashion -- that could be great. Can't say it would make a difference because I've heard SAs -- at the register -- ask if an addtl 30% off promo was in effect while ringing up a customer. Umm...how did you walk past all those signs in clearance to get to the register where you're standing and not pick up on that? (raises eyebrows, alternately)

    18. I think rbc.shops is correct. J. Crew is doing this as part of a business strategy. I am not an educator nor a student, but I can see why the inconsistency of the policy is frustrating for those who are. Just like when J. Crew sends an email discount code to cardholders and some don't receive it. I think the reason is that J. Crew is having communications issues, both to their store employees (stacking policy) and with their customers (I don't think they mean to exclude some cardholders from promos but probably have a glitch in their system). These are probably a result of the growing pains that Mickey was wary of in one interview I saw (the TV special on CNBC, I think it was). They are expanding business, losing track of some details like these we are seeing.

  2. This belongs in reviews, but since there is a sweater promo I'm putting it here. I ordered the Collection Cashmere Boxy Boy Sweater (in navy) to try. It is very plain, but I really like it. The sleeves are not full length. They are I think what would be called bracelet length, but they are longer than the sleeves on a Tippi, I think. Or maybe they just seem longer because they are looser. This sweater looks a lot like the Collection Cashmere Long Sleeve Tee, but it is a looser fit. It might be almost cropped, but it doesn't bother me so it isn't a lot. The style seems more for spring, even though it's cashmere, but it is not feather-weight. Thickness of the cashmere seems the same as the Cashmere Tee. It says "boxy", but it is not extremely boxy, just a bit.

  3. Always nice to see another promo! :) It is warming up here quickly, so no real 'need' for any new sweaters. Although I may pick up a Jackie cardigan or two as replacements for my older ones since I can wear them year-round, and frequently wear them over sleeveless dresses during the spring and summer months.

  10. The Seattle store was offering 20% off on both sweaters and any kind of top besides blazers and tunics. So I bought a cashmere V-neck in a very pale mint and the Cabo chambray popover which was the one chambray I didn't have yet. The cashmere V-neck was originally $228. which I don't see online.

  12. If you're looking for the Macalister wedges in black, South Coast Plaza (Costa Mesa, CA) has one pair (didn't see a box) in a size 8 that's on sale for $119 before discount. Also, there were a bunch of red No. 2 double-serge wool skirts marked $49.99 before discount and quite a few of the navy micro-tweed jackets with the double zipper for $99 before discount.

  13. Nothing for me in this promo; but I did score a great Hugo Boss sweater at Winners. With the zig-zag stripe I'll be channeling my inner Charlie Brown.

  15. I was just in the Bloomingdale's J. Crew store with my Very Personal Stylist William, who's incredible by the way. I purchased several items, and went way over my budget, but you have to occasionally treat yourself!

    Of course, I purchased the rugby Crystal Necklace sweater. I also bought the black suede Everly pumps, No. 2 pencil skirt in Pinwheel eyelet (navy), the pink tweed jacket, the Emmaleigh dress in super 120s (black), the Tilda Oxford Rhinestone top, the Blythe blouse in polka dots, Mini medallion tie-neck dress, and a couple crisp button down blouses. I am oh so happy with the purchases and the sale!

    There were a ton of things I tried on that I need to go back and buy. I still would love to purchase the silver Everly pumps, the black Super 120s blazer and skirt, the Pixelated Houndstooth skirt (it's a beautiful coral & pink!), coral cardigan, cashmere cardigan in windowpane check, white Box-pleated crepe skirt, denim crop jacket, green tweed pencil skirt, coral sheath dress, and a ton of necklaces that I adore!

    Gosh, I need a second job for all of this stuff!
