J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Just received the Pop art tee. Posting a look on my blog first thing in the morning, pigtailsnpearls.blogspot.com.

I love the fabric, soft and very comfy. It is on the shorter side hitting right at the top of my jeans. So if you have a long torso this may not be the best shirt for you. It also is a bit boxy, but runs TTS.

  3. I recently received the Coraline suede pumps in fresh plum! The color is beautiful and the heel height works great for me as I cannot do the 3.5 in heels. I found they fit TTS although slightly narrow in the toes for my slightly wider right foot. The front of the shoe is shallow so if you do not like seeing the lines between your toes, you may not like these shoes.

  4. I received the emmaleigh dress in bright seaside. It is bright alright. What looks like ice blue online ended up pool blue in real life. Very pretty color...just not what what I expected. It ran a tad short ...above the knees and I also did not care for the darting at the chest. But it is gorgeous work option for winter....wool is so refined and lightweight yet warm. I am petite...so what I would probably do is order this one size down in regular and have it hemmed. And slimmed on the sides.

I also received ther lulu frost Art Deco cuff. It is stunning in the morning sky color. Hope it does not fall part immediately. This is my first piece of j.crew jewelry.

  5. Recieved short sleve chambray shirt that
I pre-ordered in February. Overall I like it. Fit is TTS, not boxy. Really nice collar and good material. Color is true to the one shown on the web. A bit overpriced because they
Could issue ut with diffetent (not cheap) buttons and it would further elevate the
Look. Please forgive typos, stupid iphone woudn't
    Let me to edit.

  6. Purchased the men's sunwashed fleece hoodie in mountain white for myself. Stuck with a medium (could of done small). The arms are long but I will roll up. It is exactly what I wanted - soft, warm, great color...perfect for throwing on over tee and shorts in the cool spring evenings. Also got the Superga sneakers in white. Cute little kickers with nice arch support. I would definitely wait for a promotion on both items.

  7. Purple Poppy Tee: I like it, but it's nothing special. White (not ivory) tee with big offset purple flower. 100% cotton.

Embroidered Eyelet Tank: I ordered sizes Small and Medium to try. Neither fit me well, back they go. They arrived nicely wrapped in tissue, in plastic. Very pretty, but the Medium gaped at the armholes and the Small was too small in the body. The neckline was odd, it looked like it would be a racerback the way it cut out at the arms, but it's not a racerback. A regular bra's straps would show if you didn't do something with them. I was disappointed that neither size worked.

Herringbone Striped Tunic: Sheer, so in the Cover-Up section for a reason, although you could wear it as a shirt if you didn't mind the sheerness. Very lightweight and airy, will make a great bathing suit cover-up.

Boyfriend Fatigue Jacket: I re-bought this recently with the discount and finally took the tags off and wore it. LOVE! I love this jacket so much. Favorite thing I've bought from J. Crew in a long time.

Cargo Scout Chino: Like these a lot but they are a straight fit and the size that fits my hips gapes at the waist. I plan to solve with a belt and keep, these are cute.

Twisted Stitch Sweater: Tried the Champagne and Navy. I wanted the Champagne to work, but it's too yellow-y. The Navy was great and I didn't want to take it off, but I had to in order to fix a big exposed knot on the right sleeve (poked it through to the other side with a pen). This is a rough fabric, some might not like the way it feels or looks. I don't know why I like it so much but I do.

    1. What color did you get in the Cargo Scout Chino? I'm considering the Classic Green or the Sea Pearl. I'm wondering if the Sea Pearl is too sheer. TIA

    2. do the cargo scouts fit like the capris- low on the waist ? thanks.

    3. maryeb, I bought the Classic Green and the Sea Pearl. The Venetian Green is pretty but bright. I didn't notice the Sea Pearl being too sheer. They are not overly thin pants, that helps.

Unknown, They sit very low on the waist, more than the Cafe Capris I think.

    4. Maryeb, did you size up or down in the twisted stich sweater?
      TIA

    5. Thanks, Cate.

I think the Cargos and the Cafe Capris are both City Fit, so they hit lower on the waist. The Cafe Capris are always a bit too loose in the waist, but I just deal with it.

  8. Hey Guys/Gals! I wasn't sure which thread to use to ask this, but I've been looking for some J.Crew shirts for my DH (trying to convert him. haha!). Is this a good deal, or are these older styles? I pretty much exclusively shop J. Crew for myself, though I never really look at menswear. Any help is appreciated. I may also be interested in buying for him from you all, but nobody really posts menswear on 'Looking to Sell' :).

    1. I actually tried to convert my husband too, but no luck :) We kept some men's broken-in tees in medium and large, but he still hasn't even cut the tags off. Let me know if your husband needs any of those!

    2. I have bought the shorts, gingham shirts, cashmere sweaters and even a pair of shoes for my husband and everything has worked out great. The Tees don't really look like his style so I have passed on these so far. My husband is tall so he loves that the sweaters come in size tall and the shorts are really good quality.

    1. Megan, those look like a good deal! At least one of them is very similar to one DH has and it's a Spring 2012 tag. The fabric in these types of shirts is very soft/pliable, but wrinkly, IMHO. If your DH is going to use them for business he might like the Gap Non-Iron shirts. Gap has plenty of sales to bring down their prices (though not as inexpensive as this :)!)

  11. Hi everyone! Is the Merino Boyfriend Sweater (the lightweight spring version) a size down item? Thanks!

    1. I sized down one size. It's still loose in the body and the sleeves fit well.

    2. I sized down one too.

I reviewed it on january the 6th.

    3. Hi LizPoms, I sized down too. I could probably have gone down two sizes, but there isn't an xxxs!
I reviewed it on my blog too, can't link as I'm on an iPad, but if you click on my name it will take you to my blogs.

    4. I didn't size down, but certainly could have.

I like the full-on slouchy look of this fit, especially since I have so many fitted sweaters. I love it with pencil skirts!

I think you could go either way, depending on your preference.

  12. A couple of reviews:

    1) Silk collar tee: wanted to love, but the proportion of the collar is off for me (too small). The body fit very nicely though, not too boxy and the right length for me (I am 5'6" but short waisted).

    2) Peter pan merino sweater in ivory/gray stripe: holy see-through and weird batwing arms for some reason. The proportion on the collar is much better for me, but this time the body fit was off.

    3) Ponte swing dress: this is a surprise LOVE for me. My stomach is my problem area, so I knew from other JCAs to size up. I did, and it fits perfectly. I bought the black and can easily see dressing up or down. A definite keeper.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Silk collar tee: purchased the gray, and collar is a bit small but stands out against the gray so didn't think it looked weird. Fits TTS. Material is more of a thin sweatshirt even though they call it a tee. Keeping happily.

Embroidered eyelet tank: the ivory color is lined in the front so not that see through. Tried a S and it was a little loose but not big enough to size down. Unfortunately, armholes gaped too much and the cut isn't flattering for broad shoulders. It's cut in an almost racerback style that I can't imagine being flattering unless it fits perfectly, and this doesn't. Too bad, because I thought the embroidery on the front and the scalloped hem was ADORABLE. Returning to store.

Liberty floral 5" shorts: LOVE this print. I do think this is closer to 4" than 5" but it wasn't obscenely short (hate that most of jcrew's printed shorts have 3" inseams. Makes me wonder if they know who their customer base is.) Fits TTS. Definitely a keeper!

Seersucker cafe capris: Fits like other cafe capris, although this seems like it will stretch out quickly due to seersucker material. Bought this on a whim because I love the crispness of seersucker but I can never figure out what to wear with seersucker pants. It's a neutral, so should be a cinch to figure out, but it's that borderline casual but not sporty that I have trouble doing outfits for. Deciding whether to keep.

  14. Audball, Thanks so much for the advice. My husband doesnt have the type of work that he has to wear very dressed up/business clothes, but he has to look clean/professional. Does JCrew also run on the large side for menswear?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My husband finds that sizing runs TTS with other brands, except for inseams. He finds them a little short for his taste and goes up in length and the fit is perfect for him.

      Delete
    2. I agree with injanuity (love that name!) on this. TTS for shirts, but the inseams are a little short on the pants (he gets in a long discussion about "break in the pants", which leaves me a little bleary-eyed!) so he goes slightly longer with inseam...

    4. injanuity and audball, it is interesting to hear that both your husbands find the inseams are too short. They really are too short - my husband is 6'4" and needs a 34" inseam. He was wearing Banana Republic pants for a while but he liked the slimmer cut of the J. Crew pants so I ordered him two pairs, one Italian wool slim Ludlow pants, and the other, a pair of herringbone wool slim Ludlow pants. When he tried on the herringbone pants, they were noticeably too short, so I pulled out the measuring tape. The Italian wool pants had a measured inseam of 33" and the herringbone wool pants had an inseam of 32". Thinking I had been sent a dud, I sent back the herringbone wool pants and exchanged for a new pair, and the next pair of herringbone wool pants had the same problem, with a 32.5" inseam!

(In case you were wondering, it was too late to send back the first pair of Ludlows - my husband had left them sitting in the closet for a while over the holidays and only thought to try them out when he noticed the problem with the herringbone pants.)

At this point, my husband was really upset and disappointed, so we wrote a letter about the issue and sent it to Mickey Drexler. We got a response almost immediately. The head of customer service helped out us right away after that. Anyway, yes, it seems to be that across the board, the inseams of the men's pants are shorter than stated. This is an issue for men who need a 34" inseam, because for precut pants, they don't come any longer than 34". And it's also an issue for the Italian wool pants that I originally ordered. For the Italian wool slim Ludlows, you can specify inseam up to 36"- I had requested a 34" inseam and instead got a 33" inseam, so I am going to have to take the pants to a tailor to get the hem let out. I notice now they have changed the options for this pant so that you can get the pant unhemmed. I am going to be selecting this option from now on, so that we can get the pants hemmed by my own tailor and ensure that we get the right inseam length.

  16. Blair from Atlantic-pacific wore the collection raffia stripe pant in her blog post on 3-3-2013. IMO they are either too large or just ill fitting but as always I love the way she styled it. I'm sure they would look horrible on me. Horizontal stripes on thighs! No way!

    1. I noticed that the stripes don't match up on the inseam - so sloppy.

  17. Ordered the hot pink Curator pants and I love the color. Very neon and not for the faint hearted. Paired especially well with black, also with navy. Material was good, felt nice on the skin. Substantial and well made too. Problem was I ordered the wrong size. I usually do 0 or petite 2, and I ordered a petite 0 as I thought it may be too loose and hammer pants-like. It was tight at the hip area that pockets gaped open. Sadly have to return. Not sure if I will try the P2 size, cos I can't think of other pairings for now. any suggestions fellow JCAs?

    3. I just got it in the mail today and tried it on just now. For me, it's a keeper. Not too boxy, not too short, and I love the length of the sleeves. I got the M (my usual size) and it fits perfectly.

      Delete
    4. I just got it today too and I am very happy with it! The colours are great and the fit works for me, a bit loose and not slim fitting like the model shot. Material is thin but not flimsy. Looks great with my festival blue schoolboy blazer.

    5. I ordered this recently...should come in a few days. Excited to hear the positive reviews! I thought I might be crazy but kept finding myself going back to it. Finally, I thought, "Eh, throw it on top with the rest; it'll probably go back..." Perhaps it's a keeper?

      Delete
    6. I got mine today as well and agree with kitkat-cda. The tee was on the thinner side (for some reason I pictured it as being thicker; more like the perfect tees). I think it is quite form-fitting online, but my normal size (M) was a little loose around the torso. I'm afraid to size down, since the arms are fitting well.

I'll probably keep this size, since I'm concerned about shrinkage in the wash. It's a very unique print and I can see it working with all kinds of pants/skirts/shorts (denim, red, navy, white, their "weathered cypress" color). Very versatile in that regard. Not sure if I would pay full-price, but I used the 20% and free shipping offer I had a few weeks back.

  22. The Quilted Jackets have been reviewed by other JCAs but I thought I'd throw my thoughts out there ...

I tried both the Chive and the Indigo Floral and my intention was to go with the Indigo Floral. I like the print alot and have a gift card burning a hole in my pocket. I went with my usual size 4 and I found they fit TTS, just like my other JC jackets.

Let me reiterate the POV that they are super BOXY. Cute from that side view in the Style Guide but unless you are careful about how you style these, they look very Vera Bradley-meets-Chicos. It's the combination of the boxy cut, sweet floral prints, and the quilted fabric. I couldn't make it work.

I got the navy dot Schoolboy instead, absolutely love it even though I don't really need another navy jacket :)

    1. I could not possibly wear the quilted indigo floral without looking like a Vera Bradley bag. Maybe that is why I returned the top but at the same time really liked it. I like Vera Bradley bags, but I don't want to look like one :) I thought that navy dot Schoolboy was adorable, nice choice!

    4. thanks, gigi. I wonder if I should have gone with a size 4 instead of the 6 since the fit is said to be so boxy. I'm usually a 4 or 6 in jcrew blazers and coats....I do love this print.

      Delete
    5. patsystone - I tried on the 6, which I was able to zip. I thought the jacket looked cute zipped. So I didn't try the 4, figuring I wouldn't be able to zip it. Good luck with the fit. Keep in mind whether you will want to wear it zipped or not. In a lot of the cropped boxy ones I never button or zip, but in this one I liked it zipped.

    6. About the quilted floral jackets...it seems to be a trend this year. I won't be wearing this trend this time around, though I had a jacket like that with a mandarin collar in the late 70s when I was a girl that brings back good memories.

  23. Got the Liberty Schoolboy and love it! Fit is TTS. Fabric is very nice and lightweight. I might replace the gold buttons with navy but that would end up being a bit of work since their are four buttons at the cuff of each sleeve. Anyway, it think it is much more colorful IRL than website photos would indicate. Will go great with red, mint, succulent green (from last year), bright blue, salmon, and, of course, white and navy. Very happy with this purchase!

  26. Just received the Factory button-back sundress. Have the retail version of this from last year (Villa dress in stripe) and I picked up the byzantine blue version from factory since the villa was a real fave for me last summer. The fabric is very similar to the retail version, the fit is tts and slightly more snug up top. I found the armholes to be cut a little low on the Villa, the factory version does not seem to have this problem. The blue is slightly darker than it appears onscreen but is still that lovely cobalt that has been a staple this year. Very happy with this one, which is still on promo on the site.

Also, the description states "Finished with cool cutouts, these sleek sandals look lovely against bare skin," however, there is "beige" colored leather behind the cutouts, so if your skin color is not beige, its not going to look like cutouts against skin.

I also purchased (in-store with the 20% off promo) the Peplum ponte tee (item 84643) in the ivory color. This top is simple perfection. I know I will wear this to death this spring and summer. Its a nice weight, perfect shape. I don't have a lot of peplum, but this top just works. It has a longer length, a nice shaped and structured bust and a covered zipper in the back. The color is a true, rich ivory with a gold zipper. I recommend this top, especially with the 20% off promo. This fits TTS to large. The armholes were slightly large on me, but I loved the fit, so I didn't want to size down.

I also purchased the 5" Liberty shorts in the June meadow pattern (item 48014). I think these shorts are closer to 4". I returned two pairs of 4" inch shorts and I can't say that these liberty shorts fit too much different from those. (As an aside, I ordered two pairs of 4" chino shorts -- one in the citrus lime and one in the indigo blue. They fit so differently. And the waistline of the indigo blue pair was a good 1/2 inch smaller than the citrus lime pair. I like the fit of the citrus lime, but the color was just so bright. If I was 10 years younger, I probably would have kept them). I liked the Liberty shorts a lot, although they are not really my style at all. I love the print and I was considering the make up case / clutch in the same print and ended up with the shorts, but now I'm considering either going back for the case, too, or returning the shorts and getting the case. Any thoughts?

    1. The 20% off code didn't work for me on the Ponte Peplum top. It looks like it's not considered a tee, or maybe it's just me.

      Thanks for the helpful reviews!

    2. That's interesting that it didn't work, because when I asked the SA in the store if the top was on sale, he said he didn't know, but if it was, it would ring up automatically. And it did ring up as 20% off (as did the Liberty shorts). J. Crew is so weirdly inconsistent with their prices and promotions.

  41. Does anyone know what popover is featured on www.thepinkpeonies.blogspot.com on March 4 under feeling blue? It looks silkish but is white with royal blue stripes? It's so cute but I can't find it online?

    1. I saw it in store, I think is not online yet. Not sure if it's a popover or a shirt, I don't remember. I think Gigi had a post with maybe more details, sorry if I am not very helpful.

    2. Obsessed - PPeonies post is here, but that's not the shirt I tried on. I haven't seen the striped one she's wearing.

Ema - Good faint memory lol. I tried on another popover -- silk paisley/mosaic print -- that's not online for sale at the moment. It was featured in a Lookbook, though. Pic 4, in this post

    3. Gigi, I'm fairly sure that popover is on the site. Item 21192 Bazaar silk popover. It's $243 on the Aus site, and has black cuffs.
It's lovely! But too $$$ for me

  42. Has anyone seen the Tippi sweater in tipsy parsons print in person? Looks like the pattern is literally "printed" on--how does the quality look?

  43. I finally got around to posting photos of the merino boyfriend sweater in sour lemon. I sized down in this one, and got XS and it is still very roomy. I didn't want to go down to an XXS for fear of losing sleeve length. See blog post here.

  45. I didn't recently buy this item but....wrote a review on my blog about Timex's "Field Army Watch" that J.Crew has carried for years. I got it as a Christmas gift a few years back and just thought I would let you all know how much I love it and what a great staple it has been to have in my accessories wardrobe.

  46. Step back from the over priced Liberty quilted jackets. The one I got was horrible sewn in the lining. No way worth the full price point.

  47. I just bought the golden gears necklace today, I really like it. I tried it in store, although it was full price they gave me the online price of $88.00. I like to wear a necklace inside a button front shirt to fill in the neckline, this is 16" and will be perfect.

I tried the classic link necklace while I was there. It's heavy! At least compared to the golden gears. It's nice, though for what I wanted it's too bulky. It's not going to sit flat under a shirt. I have the original Jenna bracelet from 3-4 years ago and this is the same link on a smaller scale. Very statement-y in a necklace. I like it and may pick it up if it goes on sale.
