JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. A little OT but has anyone found themselves in their usual winter style rut? This year it's the crewneck sweater over button up with statement necklace, hacking jacket/blazer, skinny jeans and riding boots. I always tell myself that I will make every attempt to style wickedly cute outfits everyday but when the weather is horrid for days on end, I loose the will...

    1. Yes, D*ska, so over my buttondown with sweater or cardigan over it and jeans. I've been working from the outside in as of late. Picking a jacket or coat that feels awesome and then choosing an outfit to wear under it.

  2. What do you all like to style purple with? I'm adding both ends of the spectrum (lavendar and deep royal/grape) to my wardrobe in an attempt to branch out, but beyond jeans I'm a bit lost on what colors to wear for skirts/pants and what shoes go best.

    1. I only have one purple thing-a pair of suede pumps in a dark purple that I love love love. I wear them with all black outfits, a dark purpley red skirt (often with a neutral top), white skinny jeans with charcoal colors, light heather gray pants with pretty much any color on top, and if I'm feeling crazy/confident with other bright jewel tones (fesival blue, green, darker pinks).

    2. I am purple obsessed. For a lavender top, I love charcoal gray bottoms. I have an eggplant pencil skirt from Ann Taylor that I have worn with a lavender top. It looks good but you have to be careful to not look too 'matchy' with accessories/shoes. For an eggplant purple top, bottoms in a medium gray color would go well, or khaki. I try to avoid purple/yellow (complementary colors). Think like a JCrew stylist and just start grabbing things from your closet in random colors and seeing if they go. A lot of seemingly weird combos can work if you pair with neutral shoes and accessories.

    3. I'm new to purple, but I love it with greens- pale green with deep purple, or dark green with lavender! Also gorgeous with navy...

    4. I think lavender is a great summer choice. You can pair it with white, light pink, dove grey. Think soft, tonal pairings. You can also do navy. Silver shoes/ sandals will look just stunning and avoid a look that might be too sugary.

Dark purple will pair well with fuchsia, magenta grey or black. Some purples, the ones that have more red than blue go very well with cognac brown .
      HTH :)

    5. Forgot to mention mint as an option for the lavender pieces.

    6. I love purple too. I find I really need to look at the fabric before I can figure out what colour a shade of purple will look best with. I look at the colour of the threads, the lining or the buttons on a jacket for clues.

I'm with Diana -- I love lavender with peach, mint or pale grey. It's also nice with my Ludlow linen trousers.

I like to pair bold shades of purple with neutrals and use red or gold as an accent.

  3. I love all shades of purple with grays; this works especially well if "cool" colors are good with your complexion.

I will sometimes pair lavender with mid-tone and darker shades of brown, which looks great when the "brown" has a bit of texture (tweed, suede, linen).

  4. I recently bought the Liberty-collar merino sweater:

And I absolutely LOVE it, but am just totally unsure how to style it. The sweater is a lot boxier and shorter than I thought (I don't mind the short length since I'm only 5'1'') and it drapes like a dolman on me. For it to look like it does on the model, I would have to pull it down, but obviously it won't stay that way.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

    1. As far as the silhouette goes a short and boxy on top needs a slim bottom, to create a balanced look. the rise is also important if you don't want to bare your abs....if you do that's fine too, it's been on the runways as of late:)
Slim pants like minnie, skinny or straight jeans will work just fine. Or a pencil skirt. You didn't mention which color you have but white jeans will work for both. Or pick one color of the sweater, even from the collar.

    2. Thanks Diana! I have a picture of the sweater in my latest blog post here: http://petitephd.wordpress.com/. I got the blue color (am really in love with how vibrant the blue is as opposed to navy!)

I think you're right that a slimming bottom is important. It's just tough because I'm bottom heavy with especially huge calves, so I try not to wear skinnies or skirts. Oh well, hopefully this will inspire me to lose some weight! :P

    3. I thought of another option. A long, skimming the body, fluid skirt. It is on trend and easy to wear.

  5. Hi all,
Delurking to ask if anyone hs any ideas for the navy Rosie to perk it up for Easter events? I loved it and snagged one in my size but when I got it found it a little plain...any jewelry or shoe ideas? TIA for helping this uncreative JCA!

    1. You could try yellow shoes and jewellery or the bright coral/orange JCrew colour - should work well with a navy dress. Good luck

  6. I just picked up the jcrew scalloped dress in navy and I want to wear it to an Easter brunch. Any suggestions on what to wear with it? I need to cover my shoulders with something.
Also I bought the multistripe dress and want to wear it to work. Any suggestions on how to dress it up for the office? Thanks!

  7. Here are two options for your Easter outfit
    Green jackie cardigan in seaglass

COLLECTION FEATHERWEIGHT CASHMERE CARDIGAN IN MICROCHECK , in navy rose
I would finish the look with the double tassel necklace which absolutely adorable IRL.
