Enjoy Some More! 25% (or 30%) Off $150+

J.Crew has extended for a *second time* the offer to take 25% off & free shipping all orders of $150+ (30% off for those who open a J.Crew card) with promo code LOVEJCREW. This offer now ends on Saturday, March 30, 2013. (Do we think it will be extended again?)

I am assuming the offer for current card holding members- to get 30% off and free shipping on $150+ with promo code CARDMEMBER- is extended too.

Either this sale is doing phenomenally well for J.Crew, or J.Crew is running out of promotion-related ideas to offer customers. ;) I personally think it is the former. I also believe the reason behind it is summed up nicely by Silver_Lining (in this post):
I think that if anything, this promo illustrates that JC's starting price points are just too high. Take 30% off them and things have been selling out like crazy.
After all these years, JCAs have noticed (1) prices rising for items that are the same (with not so much the same quality/materials) and (2) quick turnarounds from new arrivals to first cuts. So its hard to justify paying full price for anything. Maybe J.Crew should just reconsider their initial price points? It seems like they could sell a lot more new arrival merchandise this way.

Will you be checking out J.Crew? Did you already pick up an item or two? If so, please share!

    1. You and me, both. I've had items sitting in my bag since the promo started but resisted buying anything. I thought I'd made it past the temptation. Just caught up on the review post, I feel my restraint slipping away.

    2. Seriously! Let the torment end :)! I already blew my months budget on shoes so I'm trying to be good and just wait for further markdowns next month when they want to make room for summer stuff!

  3. I had planned on placing an order for one of the full-price swimsuits but my size sold out on one of the pieces before I could do it. Now that the promo is extended, perhaps I will be able to catch it on popback.

For those interested: there are a couple of new Promo-priced items today, as well as several new markdowns. I've noted them at the top of this post on my blog.

    1. The Liberty Perfect shirt in June's Meadow floral is one of the markdowns. It is now $79.99 before the discount. I received mine last week and absolutely love it. The print and colors are very pretty IRL. From doing a couple of quick outfit try-ons, I think that it is going to be a versatile piece, too.

    2. I am a bit reluctant to try any more the liberty shirts. I bought several over the past few months. Only one fit great. The other were "off" in fit even within the same size but the biggest and strangest was one was VERY ITCHY cotton. For the price the cotton should be soft! Just had to share my two cents worth.

    3. Yes, FFM that is what I was waiting for. I knew it would drop in price since it was still available in all sizes. I also purchased a jackie cardigan, iphone case in hummingbird print (only piece in that print I can afford) and vintage short sleeve pj set. I did a hurried order this am but may look again for all items. Still waiting for my first order from this promo to be delivered.

    5. FFM, any chance you could do a real life pic of the liberty shirt. I'm having a hard time picturing the floral shirt on me, and it would help to see the print irl. Thank you.

The original price was $150. Thanks FFM. Carolyn from Vancouver

    8. savvyshopper: I just posted pics of the shirt here on my blog. The overall color/print is subtle and feminine, IMO. Some of the flowers have a bit brighter color in them, but they do not overpower the shirt in any way.

    9. JRSConifer: Glad to hear that you were able to get the shirt at the new lower price! That's a really great deal! :)

    10. Carolyn from Vancouver: You're welcome! I'm glad you were able to get the price adjustment on the Thomas Mason shirt. What a fantastic price! I've also been considering that one, so please do let me know what you think of it once it arrives. :)

  5. The chive floral quilted jacket being unique sold out at full price. I noticed at 6 am with the sale update that only one size was left and for several days it was not even online in the regular priced jackets and just popped up today for the first time in sale. However, on the other hand, the indigo floral keeps dropping in price every few days it seems! Obviously, not a big seller. So I think it depends on the piece as some do sell out at full price and others languish.

  6. The prices are SO HIGH! I got the jacquard dot top - which I actually really really like - but it is $110 original price. And it's 100% synthetic! I can live with a hundred dollar top if the material justifies it, but this certainly does not. I am torn because the top is really pretty and is a definite staple item. I plan to keep the tag on to see if I can get it cheaper in the next 60 days.

    1. Totally agree with Joy. I got my jaquard dot top yesterday with the 30% cardmember promo. I have to say, even at $77 it is not worth it for viscose. Plus the material on the covered button at the back was already coming undone after I'd buttoned it twice. Buttons need to be sturdy! I'll be returning and would perhaps consider rebuying if it were $40 or less, but that's it. J.Crew needs to come back to reality with their pricing.

  7. With regard to pricing, maybe JC knows what it is doing after all.

A recent New Yorker article chronicled the surprising failure of the "fair and square" strategy at JC Penney (many fewer markdowns - low prices every day):

"Doing away with constant markdowns was, on the face of it, sensible: instead of starting with a high price and quickly marking it down, start with a lower price. But Johnson failed to see how attached customers were to markdowns. “In most of the retail universe, price is the most powerful motivator,” Cohen said. “This game of cat and mouse with regular, ever-changing discounts is illogical, but it’s one that lots of consumers like to play. Johnson just ignored all that.”

How many of us feel the joy of "scoring a popback" or get up way too early in the morning on sale days? Hmm...

    2. Cousy: I found JC Penny's story/strategy fascinating. I think the problem with JC Penny though is that the former CEO (who sat on the board of Apple, if I remember correctly) tried to use Apple's strategy (same price, fair and square). This works find if you have a high-quality product that customers are excited to get their hands on. But JC Penny's target customer (who happens to be my mom), are those who are use to shopping with coupons and discounts. The new JC Penny strategy of same price, fair and square, alienated the old customers and did not bring in any new customers. I also remember reading that they just bombed during Black Friday because they were the only retailer in the mall with no offers to share. But they had other issues that plagued them as well. They were planning to revamp all their stores. Even though a small minority of stores were updated, they touted that they were new and improved. So when people showed up to most stores, it was the same as usual- it turned a lot of people off. Plus, they had other big issues like with employees (morale was super low over the new changes.) JC Penny had a multi-prong strategy that was poorly implemented. Sorry to go on and on, but like I said, the JC Penny story is really an interesting one. It is too bad that they are where they are. Especially since other competitors like Macys are reporting better sales figures.

    3. On a plus note, it looks like they are now carrying the Joe Fresh collection online (since the Joe Fresh website is not a shop). That should bring them new customers

    4. Oooh. I do love a good pop-back. Especially when it is a seasons old piece that you thought long gone. It is kind of a fun game, if swimming with sharks isn't your thing. Will it ship? Will it be new? Will it be the right item? Will I get bit?...

  9. i've worked in corporate retail for the past 3 years and the reason why many retailers extend their promos is because compared to last year, business isn't doing as well. j.crew is similar to the last retailer i worked for, and like them, i doubt j.crew would ever consider lowering its prices b/c it would hurt the brand. however to entice customers, they offer these promos when sales are soft, which is a bonus for customers like us!

this is my first time commenting on your site, and i just wanted to say thanks!

  11. OT--Can anyone give me pros and cons of the Factory vs. Retail Ponte/Pixie pants? The Factory have the side zip, not sure what I should be considering this as, pro or con?

Also, love visiting this site as always, but now that Factory is a separate site with its own promos and line, I was wondering if it might be possible to have a "Factory Focus" post each week where we could talk about items and experiences with the Factory site and stores? Alexis, please forgive me if this is out of turn--but I find myself visiting the Factory site a lot and would love JCAs opinions as a resource for these items as well!

    2. I agree-- now that everything is "Collection" with sky-high prices, I'm shopping at Factory much more. Styles/prices at Factory seem more in step with the J Crew of yore (without much difference in quality). Personally, I'd love to see a Factory focused thread once in a while!

  12. Alexis/Genny: (sorry that I can't reply)

Agreed that J C Penney and J Crew are very different and that J C Penney has other problems. But as someone who has complained about JC's wild pricing games, I need to be honest with myself that part of me rather likes the cat and mouse pricing game. I probably buy more when I feel that something is on significant discount event if that was part of JC's pricing plan for the item to begin with.

  13. Love the look of the Stripe Silk Popover (42901) in the catalog, not so much online; original retail $135, now $110, less 30% if I plunked out another $73, but since I bit for a popped back stretch suede skirt recently, am managing to hold off. JC needs to do a better job on quality control (although that skirt is a keeper -- what a great job they did on that item).

  14. The B&M stores are having 30% off on the sale items, but this promo makes them final sale. Liberty blazer in June's Meadow floral is $99.99 in stores plus extra 30% off. It is a final sale item.

  15. I'm too bitter over the fact that the merino sweaters I purchased on final sale ended up being about $20 lower with this recent sale. SO ANGRY AT MYSELF. It makes me not want to buy anything at J. Crew, even with this tempting deal.

  16. I went to the North Michigan Avenue location at lunch. Was told 30% off sale items and 25% off womens clothing (not shoes or jewelry). I asked at the register if you had to spend $150 to get the 25% off regular priced items and was told no, it is 25% off regardless of how much you spend. As noted by sksk21 above, the June's Meadow Liberty blazer is $69.99; navy silk collar tee is $34.99; boy shirt in mint strawberry plaid $41.99; medallion paisley scarf $20.99 (all prices WITH 30% discount). The sale section was huge, lots of Jackies, Tippi cardigans, striped Liberty collar sweaters, featherweight cashmere, toothpicks and tees. Did not have a lot of time but it is definitely worth a visit.

  18. Made one of my rare trips to a B&M yesterday and got the silk tipped boyshirt in ivory with black pipings. I was worried that it might be too uniform-like, but maybe that's because the model online has it buttoned all the way up. I think it looks better and easier when the collar is left open. The silk appears to be of decent quality -- nice feel and drape, not too thin, but still could be thicker. The shirt looks very cute with blue jeans or under a cardigan.

  19. Just fyi- Madewell also has a pretty good sale on. Using code 4SPRING, you get 25% off and free shipping. The bummer is that it does not apply to "third-party branded" merch.

    1. My polka dot Blythe (grey and white, from last year?) has pull marks all over the upper arms. Like you, it fits fine -- even a bit big, so I don't know what's causing the marks.

    2. is it from pressing (ironing)the silk ?

    3. I've had the same problem. My VPS recommended I size up 2 sizes so that the silk can drape and not stretch when am moving around. I'm a size 4 Tall or 6 regular. I have notice that a 6 Tall works fine but I needed to buy size 0 in the silk white-black piping boy shirt.

      Delete
    4. Yes, same problem. Honestly I think it's the quality of the silk, way too thin. I actually had to throw away a Blythe yesterday because the silk tore at the seam on one arm-- I've worn it maybe 4 times and it wasn't too tight. The tear was almost 2 inches long and not worth repairing. Too bad, I will not be buying anymore silk from JCrew unless the quality comes back.

      Delete
    5. Don't know why the silk boy shirts do this too. I've been through one navy stripe boy shirt already. I bought another last year when I noticed this was happening because I love the damned shirt. So frustrating. The luxe silk shirts seem to hold up fine though. Might have to stick to them since on sale they not much more than Blythe or Boy shirt. Limited colors though. Or maybe just shop elsewhere for silk shirts. sigh

  26. Gaah! I dropped $ at JC and Madewell just now. Gave up shopping for Lent, too, so I feel terrible about it. But my justification is that I won't get any of these things until AFTER Lent is over. Annyway, ordered the smocked top (white) and the cargo scout chino in sea pearl. At Madewell, I loaded up-- so many cute things! But three of my five items are waitlisted and the Gola sneakers are not on promo. Oh well. They're opening a new Madewell in Chicago this spring so I can return anything I don't like to the B&M. Back to guilt...

It practically desintegrated in the middle of the back. The shirt is not tight and i got my normal size-- I think JCrew light silk colors are particularry prone to that. Also, the Purple Poppy Tee (35514) that was previously sold out, is available in XS. After the disaster of the exploding umbrella tee (see reviews) I hope this one is better.
