"Springtime at J.Crew was all about contrasts and closet-raiding. Blazers were slouchy and tailored in the men’s wear tradition, while vintage-inspired jacquards and diaphanous details came out of grandmother’s wardrobe. Likewise for the muted palette of mint greens and nudes — “old-school makeup colors,” as creative director Jenna Lyons called them — that was a soft counterpoint to the label’s signature saturated hues. Meanwhile, Madewell’s workwear heritage merged with a Mediterranean influence. Denim, sturdy and well worn, as in the new “ex-boyfriend” jeans, was paired with airy knits and breezy bohemian scarves."
{If you are interested, there was a post recently ("Sneak Preview to J.Crew Spring 2009 :)") that shows some items additional photos from J.Crew's Spring Women's line.}
What are your thoughts on the few items slated for Spring 2009 (both for men and women)? Which items do you love or would leave? ;)
I LOVE the color scheme and the *retro* vibe, too! Definitely looking forward to seeing even more pieces. :)
ReplyDeletePleast tell me those are NOT jean shorts. In the second picture of the women's sneak peek it looks like the model is wearing jean shorts? Really JCrew? I am HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED. I never would have thought that they would never go so far as to think jean shorts are fashionable. Ew.
ReplyDeleteWhy can't you ever make some nice black shorts? I've been looking for those for years, and never saw upscale shorts like that. Now we've been reduced to jorts? (For those of you who might not know jorts are jean shorts.)
Love the grey sweater on the gal in picture 3 but I am so unimpressed with the rest. Ugh--it's getting bad they way it is somewhat grunge inspired. I love the high/low concept but isn't this getting a bit over the top esp for Spring?
ReplyDeleteI agree with FFM. I am liking the retro vibe and the jean shorts. (yes, I truly like them:)
ReplyDeleteHi, ladies! Remember, they did say that some of those pieces were from Madewell.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the retro, muted colors, but I'll still be all about the wide spectrum of colors J.Crew offers that others can't seem to catch up with. ;)
Some of those pieces look like a rip-off of Phillip Lim (who I love). That said, I do like some of the more embellished tops shown. I'm not keen on the peach and pastels though... they make me look sallow. I don't know. It's hard to get a good idea of the spring collection from just a couple of pictures. We'll have to wait and see.
ReplyDeleteWhen do the spring items hit stores?
ReplyDeletethe jean shorts makes me think of brittney spears. very trailer trash.
ReplyDeletehmmm I'm not liking the muted colors and the grungy look...let's stick to vibrant colors and more...not-trashy pieces
ReplyDeleteWell, the items for men are sort of a . . . Rehash of all previous designs. Boooo.
ReplyDeleteJean shorts are an american classic, almost as much as jeans themselves. Sorry, Muffy.
ReplyDeleteI'm having a flash-back to the giant Boy-George blazers with the sleeves pushed up...
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that this is just a glimpse--there will be items I love, to be sure. What I see frightens me a bit--I am hoping that is the youthful Madewell brand. I will take this "peek" with a grain of salt;)
ReplyDeleteI like the grey and black cardigan that was really long and the grey outerwear in picture three. I was not crazy about the hemlines and thought they were a little short. I hope what I like is J.Crew and what I do not is Madewell.
ReplyDeleteI've just skimmed through womenswear & all I have to say is . . . Daisy Dukes, why? I didn't know J. Crew was competing with Forever 21.
ReplyDeletenot impressed with women's spring at all. my wallet will be happy :)
ReplyDeleteThe female model shown on the cover of this lookbook is my favorite J.Crew model. :) I love her rosy cheeks and long hair.
ReplyDeleteThe embellished tops were cute, but half of the other items look like crap you could buy from Urban Outfitters.
ReplyDeleteP.S. that oversized blazer is hideous. I'm 5'8" and a size 0, and even I don't think I could pull that monstrosity off.
I really like the blazer. I am 5'10" and a size 6-8and I know that style looks good on me:)
ReplyDeleteFrom what I've seen of J.Crew Spring...it is AMAZING! A really big departure from Fall, and I think everyone will be really happy with what they are offering! I'm already excited to shop it!
ReplyDeleteI especially love the shiny stuff and the mint green colors.
And given the different kinds (colors, patterns, materials) of shorts they normally offer...I wouldn't get too hung up on one pair they decided to feature this early in the game.
I also am really excited about the cardigans in the old link. Those are beautiful colors and I'll bet that they can be matched with a lot of outfits.
ReplyDeleteI have a similar "safari" type jacket from J. Crew from 3 YEARS AGO (different buttons, same pocket placement)like what is shown in picture 5. Looks not so "fresh" to me...AND the whole idea of taking something "unstructured" and throwing a belt over it is getting tiresome as well. Looks like the "creative director" hasn't been so creative!

ReplyDeleteI love the colors, I'd have to see more before I stated my opinion though...
ReplyDeleteI do think that the look featured on page 2 (striped boyfriend cardigan) looks like a picture from the GAP website! I saw similar cardigans in their store recently.
I'm excited by the more muted color scheme - I'm anxious to see more. Any idea when spring items will be available?
ReplyDeleteHo hum.
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 12:42: Your comment about the blazers is right on--so late 80s and not in a good way. I see the high brow/low brow play on women wearing mens' wear but its going to a tough look for many women to pull off successfully. Many of us just look better in more tailored pieces--that's been demonstrated over and over by Stacy and Clinton and more recently by Tim Gunn.
ReplyDeleteJC has been hinting at the women-wear-menswear look since the early fall roll-out. The August catalog showed the donegal tweed ecole pair with a men's chambray shirt. Loved the look and tried it without success. Size small shirt was too big and bulky under a P8 jacket. The same shirt was paired with the Houndstooth Greta in a later catalog.
The most recent catalog has feminine shirts paired with men's khakis. I thought the rise of the men's pants was unflattering on the model, and can't imagine that it going to look better on non-models.
I actually kind of like the blazer. Although it might just be because it reminds me of my high school uniform. While the color scheme is pretty, none of the fashions seem like anything to get too excited about. Hopefully the rest of the spring line will prove me wrong!
ReplyDeleteI love the scarves at the end!
ReplyDeleteIm excited for the sweaters in one of the links, but Im not too psyched about the lookbook...of course, as others have said-- it also includes madewell. seems a bit too grungy/trendy for me. I miss the classic looks--chinos, tailoring, cables, etc--and the beautiful palette of colors. this is only a peek, though, so i can't be too disappointed ; )
ReplyDelete2nd 4th looks are definitely Madewell, hence the shorts and more youthfool vibe. 1,3, and 5 have a more classy look. I would be intersted to see how spring collection shapes up.
ReplyDeleteI loved over sized blazer/jackets. I can't stand fitted ones. I would love to see this style make it's way back...I am tall and thin and I just don't care for fitted, form fitting items...yeah, they might look nice on me but I prefer a more casual, chic comfortable look!
ReplyDeleteAnon 9:08-I agree completely that I am NOT liking the mens stuff with womens esp high end that we have been seeing in the last few catalogs. I.E. Men's Chino pants with the CASCADING FLORAL--wtf? I know I mentioned this jacket needs to be played down in order to not come off too fussy but that is sloppy looking:( I just don't see people carrying that off in real life--it won't look "cool/individual/unique" it will look like you are clueless!;)
ReplyDeleteI do love the combo shown in the first Nov catalog and think if one wants to wear that look casually it is fun--perhaps buy a women's khaki chino in a slightly larger size, "you just gotta cinch it" ala SNL Gap girls-LOL, and then wear like a Cambridge cable cardi over the stripe Victoria. Something casual works for me but men's pants/shirts are just too sloppy.
ick don't like the peach tones--totally wash out anyone with fair skin.
ReplyDeletei do NOT like madewell. i was excited for it originally- to have another line by jcrew... but it is NOT good. everything looks cheap and the designs are something i can find anywhere like american eagle, the gap, urban outfitters... bleh. enough high school clothing already. i want some cute, fashionable, quality made clothing that is still young enough for my 20's. (ann taylor is way to matronly... as i find banana republic to be a lot as well.) i also don't like banana republic because they always seem to do "jewel" tones, which i hate. i would like more of their clothing if their colors weren't so terrible. more retaliers like jcrew please!
ReplyDeletethe hightop sperrys are cool!
