Clothingline describes sample sales as the following:
The term Sample Sale originally meant a sale of designer's samples. Samples are what designers use to show their collection to buyers and owners of retail stores. At the end of a season, the designer no longer has a need for these samples. So, once or twice a year they sell the samples to the public, where they usually would be sold at wholesale prices. Usually, the selection would be limited in pieces and sizes.
Today, many of these designers have taken this one giant step forward... Stock Sales. After a manufacturer has shipped their merchandise to their stores, there is usually inventory leftover. This leftover merchandise is often supplied to us, to be featured in one of our stock sales. Our Stock Sales are open to the public, where you can find the latest fashions, from the top designers at savings from 50% to 80% below retail prices.
The address for the location is:

If you live in the area (or are visiting NYC in January), are you planning to attend J.Crew's sample sale? If so, please let us know about the event! :)
Wasn't this on jcrewaholics this morning? I could have sworn I saw it there first...
ReplyDeleteB, Are you serious? SO WHAT!!!???
ReplyDeleteI envy all of you New Yorkers- I really wish I could go to this sample sale!!
ReplyDeleteAlexis = Anonymous 3:38 pm
ReplyDelete"So what" is right!
ReplyDeleteBoth blogs credit the same source: an email from a reader named "Courtney".
Thanks for actively publicizing this, Courtney and blog owners!
It was just an observation anon at 3:42. No need to crawl up someone's ass over an observation.
ReplyDeleteMany blogs on the same topic co-exist in peace. This is not a competition. Please "play nice little kiddies"
ReplyDeleteI'll play nice, but Anon 3:38 pulled my hair first.
ReplyDeleteNow, that's a cute and playful response:) Like that...:)
ReplyDeletecan you explain a sample sale more? is it just the regular merchandise on sale or is is items not seen in the stores, etc? like would i see special stuff if i go to this, not just get a great price on things i can already buy over the internet? thanks!
ReplyDeleteSo wish I still lived in NYC!!!
ReplyDeleteanon at 3:32 p.m. = leigh, who's on the take from J.Crew.
ReplyDeleteI have been to other sample sales hosted by SSS Sample Sales and they've been quite good. A warning though, the building is a bit sketchy since it just looks like an office building (it is not a normal storefront).
ReplyDeleteTo the Anon at 4:04 p.m. - I'm not sure what items J Crew will have, but a typical sample sale includes actual "samples" shown to buyers which are usually all a certain size (model size), overstock items from the current season and/or past seasons, and sometimes "seconds" with slight imperfections. Prices are typically SUPER cheap. For example, I've bought in-season designer jeans that retail at $250 for $75. Hope that helps!
Hi Leigh, we see you posted at 3:32 p.m. Glad you're enjoying this blog so much!!
ReplyDeleteenabler alert...
ReplyDeleteI don't know if this is known already, but for those of us who live overseas- anthropologie is having free standard shipping on international orders until december 7th.
i just wish jcrew would ship internationally!
I've seen J.crew "samples" on ebay - the sellers state it was an early model (or something like that) of an item that was later available in stores.
ReplyDeleteThere are some older items I'd love to find, but doubt there'll be there. I wonder if this is just a way to experiment with stuff that didn't sell in retail stores or online, and seeing if it sells better at a sample sale than by sending it to factory stores (or maybe back to China, haha).
wow, that's an impressive deal from anthro. I think their stuff is pretty crappily made, though, but free overseas shipping is a good offer.
ReplyDeleteIf I were Leigh, I would say you guys are biters. But since I'm not, I'm still going to say you guys are biters!
ReplyDeletePssst. If you guys hate Leigh that much, quit looking over there, LURKERS!
ReplyDeleteDear Seriously.
ReplyDeleteUm, I didn't "crawl" anywhere. I stated a fact and thanked those who made this information available.
As you said, just an observation.
Anon 3:42
Well, yes, when I eat meat, I bite. How else am I going to chew it and swallow it?
ReplyDeleteThe key to successfully berating someone is actually getting the insult right in the first place, Leigh.
Thanks for the Anthrop. shipping info. THat is really great for us overseas people to hear that. Really thanks a lot:)
ReplyDeleteThis is exciting news! I doubt many of the clothes would be my size but I am eager to see the shoes and jewelry.
ReplyDeletethanks Alexis as always....love the info on your blog!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Alexis and Cortney for the info!
ReplyDeleteJan 21st is in a while (btw, the day LOST starts again!)
how busy are the sample sales, usually? I am excited!! I think I may plan a weekend trip just for this : )..if only it was a little earlier, during my winter break from classes : (
ReplyDeletePS- love the holiday banner, Alexis! keep up the good work : ) we appreciate it
I hope to make it. Although I'm still on their e-mail list, I haven't been to an SSS sample sale in a few years. I work near 62nd St & Madison and it's just a hassle to get over there sometimes. If I remember correctly going at lunchtime can be a nightmare. I've never gone after work because the fitting room closes half hour before the sale ends. If I left work at 5 or 6, that doesn't leave much time to look through the merchandise and try things on. I prefer to go first thing in the morning than later in the day anyway before things are picked over.
ReplyDeleteDo they restock throughout the week/before the weekend? Wondering if it's worth it to go Sat, as I live out of state
ReplyDeletei am SOO going to this!! I'll have to go on the weekend because of school and location, but I am definitely making the trip across the river for cheap J.Crew clothes hahah.
ReplyDeleteI've been to a lot of sample sales, and many at SSS, so to the poster who wanted to know what they will have, I would guess fall/winter 08 stuff in all sizes. Probably nothing different from what is in stores or online. Most of these "sample sales" are no longer truly for samples but for overstock.
ReplyDeletekendra -- I've only been to one wedding dress sample sale for a friend's wedding, and it was crazy. I'd assume the rule that applied to that one applies to this one though -- don't expect to be able to try anything on. Wearing a tank top and tights/spandex/the equivalent helps immensely -- then you can at least slip stuff on over them. Happy shopping New Yorkers!
ReplyDeleteActually, at SSS they DO NOT let you try anything on on the floor! You will get thrown out! They have dressing rooms, amazingly!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to an SSS sample sale, but in general these sales can be pretty crazy and are very hit or miss. I've been totally dissappointed at DVF and Tibi but always have great luck at Shoshanna (my absolute fav for dresses - sorry J.Crew!) so I tend to really limit myself to which ones I go to because getting to the garment district is a pain.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I'm surprised that J.Crew is having one since sales are usually for "department store" brands like the ones I mentioned above - but I will definitely be there out of curiosity if nothing else!
Anon @ 4:21pm - Thank you for the Anthropologie "free shipping" information. I have been decidedly waiting to place a $350+ order and this is definitely enabling!!
ReplyDeleteM
I wish I lived in NY, as I would LOVE to go to this! Thanks for the information Alexis and Courtney!
ReplyDeleteawwww...how come only one store has this event???? I live so far away!
ReplyDeleteHas anyone been before? I'd love to be able to be there :(
B: I don't read any other JCrew blogs, but I think it's ok if the same promotion is posted on more than one. I think all of us are grateful to people who have time to post coupons like this for us-I personally don't care who posts it first, why would it matter anyway?
Definitely checking this out. I've never more glad to live in NY . . . eh, maybe that's a little too much.
ReplyDeleteI'm not Alexis. If I was, wouldn't I have just deleted B's dumb comment?
ReplyDeleteanon @ 3:38 PM
Do they only have common fitting rooms at sample sales? Like where you have to change in front of everyone? I've been to one sample sale before in my life and that's how it was, don't know if it's like that all the time
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited for this event! I will be there for sure, already logged this into my bberry calendar.
ReplyDeleteMarietta: That's funny cause I've done the same on my iPhone. At times, I hate going to sample sales though. The rush . . . All those clothing crazed women . . . Maybe I'll rethink about going now.
ReplyDeletePlease be aware that this is not the first ever sample sale from J. Crew. J. Crew used to host massive sales at the Metropolitan Pavilion where it was hard to find prices higher than $30. I believe the last major sale was held a sale at a Polish hall in the east village in 2003. that was a GREAT sale.
