J.Crew sent an email announcing up to 40% off select women's outerwear, both in stores and online (click here). They are also offering up to 30% off on hats, gloves, and scarves (click here).
This promotion is really great for customers who are "on the edge" of buying a new winter coat. (Especially Aficionadas and Aficionados in the Northeast, where it is freezing today!) :)
Are you planning to take advantage of this offer? If so, please let us know which coat you will purchase! :)
I'm looking to order the plain classic peacoat, but I'm not sure what petite size to get! Can anyone offer me some insight? I'm usually an xs/0 at any store, but I know petite is right for me over regular because of the shortened sleeve length and shoulders. Someone told me always to size up with Jcrew petites (4-6 instead of 0-2), and I'm wondering if this is the case with this coat in particular. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've been watching the Lady Day... no difference with this "promotion". I am also bemused with their pricing, which shows $149.99 for the Lady Day until you click on it, and it reveals that it's only for one color. Well. I guess I know what kind of eventual price I can get on the Lady Day if I wait it out.
ReplyDeleteI normally wear an XS/0 in J. Crew and ordered the peacoat in a Petit Small and it fits perfect!
ReplyDeleteThis isn't a bad deal considering you can get free shipping! I'd check out the price of a coat in a B&M first, if possible. The prices could still be even lower in store.
ReplyDeleteI am sure there will be better deals later on in the season.
ReplyDeleteWhat color pea coat do you ladies have/or going to order? I saw navy in store and it didn't really grab me.
ReplyDelete1st anon,
ReplyDeleteI have had great success with size 0 petite in the coats. I find that 95% of J.Crew women's tops and jackets run a little large on me, so I usually wear wear 0 petite. (Mind you, I wear size 2 in most other retailers, but you know J.Crew's vanity sizing.) I'm 5"2' with a very classic hourglass shape, slightly larger at the bottom and a moderately full size 34 bustline. I almost always wear 0 and xs in the tops, unless the fit is extremely shrunken or tight. I haven't found the need to size up in petite coats yet.
Sometimes, I do size up for pants, most often when buying favorite-fit because I have a slightly curvier bottom than top and I find that favorite fit runs a little tighter. But I do fit into most size 0-0P tops and jackets.
However, it depends on what you'll wear underneath the coat. I live in a relatively temperate mid-Atlantic, so most days I wear a cashmere sweater and maybe a cotton layer underneath, then I'll bundle up in a scarf and gloves. If you're going to wear padded jackets or really bulky sweaters under the coat frequently, then you might think about sizing up to a 2P.
It depends on which coat, too. I've found that the Lady Day and the Madeline (to a slightly lesser extent) fit a little more snug on me than the wool or wool-cashmere. But then, I find the double-cloth coats to be so thin (even with Thinsulate) that I can't wear them when it's colder than 40 degrees anyway. They are perfect for late fall and early spring though, as well as warmer winter days.
Hope this helps!
Can anyone share their comments on the staduim cloth coats? I've never bought this fabric before, but I'm considering either the Lucinda (my first choice) or the Bridget.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in finding out how warm this fabric is compared to the wool/cashmere coats, as well as how the coats sit. I wear mostly pants in winter, but sometimes, I wear high boots with wool skirts.
Thanks!
argh--the carrie coat in heather acorn is now $195, but the black and ivory went back up to full price at $325! I want ivory. :(
ReplyDeleteCan you get this coat in the store for $195 with student discount?
ReplyDeleteI ordered the Shipley coat--also stadium cloth--I haven't worn it out yet, as Im not keeping it (Im going with the Lady Day with thinsulate instead, plus I needed a larger size), but it doesn't seem especially warm *and* is much lighter than I expected. For the price (and claim that it is warm), I expected it to be significantly heavier. But, I havent worn it out, so I cant really say. I live in Boston, so I need something warm.
ReplyDeleteThose of you with Lady Days (with thinsulate): how do they hold up to the winter? (esp, new england winter). I have 2 puffer coats that I can wear on extreme days, but I've wanted a nice wool coat for a while (Ive always stuck with ski jackets and puffers), and I cant find one with as nice a style/fit anywhere else..Macys has thick ones, but IME they either don't fit well or dont have nearly as nice detailing.
would love your thoughts-
Also: anyone have experience with the Tabitha, Roxanne, or Maryann coats? My factory store says they have these, but I've never seen the Roxanne or Maryann.
sorry for the long post!
Obviously the mens items are selling well because here's another promotion for women only.
ReplyDeleteI wonder when the guys will get something?
Man, I would be lucky to get a 40% off socks sale.
ReplyDeletekendra,
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know about the stadium cloth Shipley. Maybe I'll stick to the wool/cashmere. So far, no coat in my closet beats last year's Dani wool/cashmere long peacoat.
I would freeze my buns off if I wore the double-cloth in a Boston winter! Like I said, I have the Madeline with Thinsulate and it's much too thin for me to wear today in the 30-degree mid-Atlantic!
The Thinsulate in the double cloth doesn't do wonders for me, and also the sleeves aren't Thinsulated so they're very thin. Even the wool pique coat feels warmer than the double cloth with Thinsulate. Heck, even the wooll/cashmere Dani could barely stand up to yesterday's strong 35-degree wind gusts.
I'm thinking about splurging on another Soia & Kyo coat. Got one at the end of season last year and wow, it is warm! I think the company is Canadian, so they have an incredible understanding of how to make a super-warm and well-constructed coat. Honestly, they're the same price as J.Crew's full priced coats, but I find them to be much thicker. You can find sales on them too (and use Macy's/Bloomies coupons).
I'm surprised that the puffer coats aren't on sale. In-store they have been $128. If anyone wants one, I'd order from the store rather than pay full price.
ReplyDeleteI ordered a Madeline, and not only was it very thin, I found the fit kind of problematic. I tried on the ivory 2 in store and found it to be big, but ordered the bright berry 2 and the snap at the bottom was holding on for dear life! If I had known there was a snap closure I wouldn't have bothered because I don't like them and find them nearly impossible to open most of the time.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone own the Greta coat? From the pictures online it looks beautiful, but I have no idea on the sizing or warmth.
ReplyDeleteI am kind of excited by the cold-weather accessories sale. :) I love scarves and I feel like I wait every year for after the holidays to buy them but never find the knock-out sales on them I was expecting. I think I should just start buying them beforehand, if I see them go on promotion, unless someone has tips on who gives away cute scarves, gloves and mittens for songs after Christmas?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what the color was for the $150 Lady Day Coat? I ordered that a couple weeks ago during the additional 30% sale in Bright Saffron and, if it was on sale for $150, would want to see if they would do a price adjustment (does anyone know if J Crew does price adjustments if something goes on sale shortly after you purchase it?).
ReplyDeleteI have a J Crew Gallery coat from a few years ago with Thinsulate and it was a great coat for me when I lived in the mid-Atlantic. Of course, I always layered something underneath it (i.e. a sweater).
Jeff and JC Guy in Canada, sorry men are getting shafted with no promos! :( Perhaps b/c most men buy more out of necessity and don't look at price as much, whereas we women collect closets full of clothing we don't really need to have to justify buying more by getting it on sale? Just a theory.
ReplyDeleteI just received my Shipley. I def expected it to be much warmer than it is as I am in Boston as well and work right by the water (its freezing)..but I can deal. I have a lady day coat that I wore for 3 years without thinsulate and was ok. I needed to get a new coat since the lining on that totally shredded to pieces. As for the Shipley I am keeping it as I already wore it. I am upset I bought it for $300 and now it is down to $250!..oh well..I can't do a price adjustment on it since I didn't buy it full price. As for the fit I would say it fits ok. It is a little big on me in the arms and it hits my knees but I figured this would happen as I am short (5'1). I usually order a Petite 2. I have the Sybil coat in that size and it is perfect in terms of arm and overall length.
ReplyDeleteHi La Petite Crew -
ReplyDeleteI just purchased the Lucinda stadium cloth coat. It is super warm - the last two days have been chilly! I highly, highly, highly recommend. Not only that it is very soft and feels great on. The virgin wool is also really thick. The cut of the Lucinda is also nice.
I like the stadium cloth so much, from now on I'll look to only purchase coats from J.Crew in that fabric (at least my "main coats").
I hope this helps you.
I think the sizing it sort of ambigious. I agree, I got the Madeline in the poppy in a 6 and it fit fine. I then ordered it in the Berry and it was tight! I also ordered a Snow Leopard Simone PeaCoat in a 6, and it was tight (see the Weekly Exchange if interested in it). So, the sizing can be all over the place. The Lady Day seems to be a 1/2 to whole size smaller than other coats (Tulip, etc).
ReplyDeletesmartblonde - I totally agree with you. I had a lady day in 0 and it was pretty tight. Yet I had ordered the zero in the Dana coat and it was wayyy to big. I tried on a Madeline in 0 and that fit ok but not perfect. I never know what size to get for coats when I can't try them on in the stores!
ReplyDeleteI have a tall LDC from last year, and the talls definitely give extra room in the shoulders/back, which is nice. I'm not in love with it completely, but I do wear it once in awhile. It's just warm enough w/ a sweater for Northern California winter nights, although I also have to wear a silk T-shirt under that and a scarf. I can't imagine it being warm enough for people in snowy climates. Also, it's too A-line, and gets this pretty pretty princess look to it that takes away from its' sophistication. I got it final sale last year, so I can't complain too much, as the price was great.
ReplyDeleteI also have a stadium cloth Tabitha coat from last year, and it really cuts the wind. I wear it when it super chilly and windy.
I wondered about the fit of the Greta coat as well. This season I've found that J Crew coats run large, I tried on the Tulip and Stadium cloth Lucinda and defintely needed to size down. I usually wear a 6 but the 4 was great even with a sweater underneath. My main concerns about the Greta are: fit (the pleat in the back might make it boxy) and the high rise of the buttons may mean it's drafty.
ReplyDeleteI'm desperately looking for a coat in a fun color, preferably purple and if I coudl get a J Crew coat on sale I'd be thrilled!
I just recieved my classic peacoat in Dark Poppy and am really sad about the color. I was looking for more of a blue-red and this is more of a tomato red. Bummer!
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to decide whether or not I can learn to love the color; it is really only a shade off and I LOVE the fit and fabric. . .
The sweet life:
ReplyDeleteI have the classic peacoat in the dark poppy (got an amazing deal on it) and was disappointed at first as well. I have learned to love it, but it does definetly make a statement. I think the trick is getting the right accessories. I wear mine with a tan burberry cash scarf and some black gloves and that instantly tones it down, I think.
I have the classic peacoat with thinsulate and I absolutely love it. I bought it in dark poppy and though I loved the color after having it a few weeks and not wearing it I realized that it doesn't go with my wardrobe (I wear a lot of green and purple). I was going to exchange it for navy, but since they told me they were running low in my size I just ordered the navy one and decided I'd send whichever one I didn't like back. Well, I ended up keeping both because it's just such a perfect coat. It's beautifully constructed and well fitting. I have had several pea coats but these are the nicest looking and feeling- by far. My Mom picked up an ivory one at the store and put it on almost immediately and got 3 compliments in a couple of hours.
ReplyDeleteAnyway I have nothing but great things to say about this coat. I am usually an XS-S, size 4 bottom, and I got it in an XS. I usually only wear 2 layers underneath and it's a perfect fit.
Oh, and about the dark poppy- I recently got a striped scarf at the B&M and it goes amazingly with it. It's dark grey, hot pink, off white, blue, and a few skinny red stripes and while it sounds crazy, I tried it on in store with a dark poppy coat and it looks awesome.
ReplyDeleteI agree that accessories can really make the dark poppy. I don't know if I could use it as an everyday coat (which is why I bought it in navy too) but it is a lovely color for winter when you need a pop of color.
does anyone know how this discount works in the stores? they had 30% all wool outerwear and it was 30% off the regular prices...would it mean it's 40% off regular prices? thanks! i really want to get the peacoat so i'm trying to figure what where i'd get it cheaper! thanks!
ReplyDeleteI had been thinking about getting a plaza coat this year -- it was $250 yesterday, but now it is back at full price with the new "promotion." :-(
ReplyDeleteSuppose I will just wait it out...
Just back from B&M in Towson, MD. They were unaware of the 40% off promo but would honor it. Also, the online prices were better than the prices on the coats. I looked at a few different coats and they were not marked down on the tags. They are having 30% off outerwear.
ReplyDeleteThe bright rhubarb Felicia's are hanging by their lonesome with the sale merchandise. Also, trouser cords are stacked on table in sale section but I did not notice the price. They must be getting ready to be degraded to the sale section as well.
For me, ordering a coat on line is the best deal now, because of the free shipping. I can't speak overall though because who knows what other B&M's are doing - they're not always very consistent.
^ oops, I should say the online prices and the B&M prices appear to be the same, not better (since coats at the B&M were not marked down).
ReplyDeleteHas anyone tried this coat from Madwell
ReplyDeleteLook 13 First Frost Coat? It's the only color it comes in but I really like the style of it. Supposedly the color is more of a blue than purple. Alas, no catalog. No product spot on website (not even a video). No store. No purchase...yet!
The stadium cloth is the warmest, and next warmest is wool-cashmere with thinsulate.
ReplyDeleteOn the lady day on sale. The color on sale is not bright saffron. I got the bright saffron with the 30% outerwear sale 2 weeks ago and asked them this morning. It's still $280. Only other option that's cheaper in the bright saffron is the french serge day coat, but that fit is not as good as the lady day.
Hi Emily -
ReplyDeleteI just got the Greta and ended up going down one size. I hope that helps you. I haven't worn it outside yet.
Hi all,
ReplyDeleteI’ve already written on a few threads regarding coats, but I’m still deliberating, so please bear with me. I just recv’d a few items @ %30 off but I’m not sure if I’ll keep ‘em. They include:
Petite Plaza #96915 in Camel
Petite Lady Day #79205 in Dark Poppy
Petite Madeline #99295 in Black
I had bought the Camel Plaza & Black Madeline as safety choices. I’ll admit, there were a few little problems with fit. In the plaza, the armholes were set a little low relative to the sleeve. This creates an unflattering line along the side of the bodice when one’s arm is down & a stiff block of fabric across the bust when one moves. With the Madeline, it looks great from the front & I thought it was a real winner. However, hubby pointed out that there is a slight blouse in mid-back near the seaming. Maybe they made it a smidge longer in the back than the front? If the detail on the sides had extended across the back, this probably would be less noticeable. I had hoped to keep these coats for several seasons, so I’m not sure if I can get over these flaws. Neither can be fixed by changing the sizing. Also, we don’t have a tailor that can fix something this complex (just hems etc.) with confidence. Not sure if I want to go with these unless the price drops further. Maybe I’ll look at them again after Christmas.
As for the Lady Day, I’m relatively happy with the tailoring. It isn’t quite as fitted on top as the Tulip or Madeline. However, I had deliberately sized up so I could wear it with bulky sweaters etc. Also, it has different sizing in the shoulders than the others as the measurements suggest. I had called to get the sizing from JC, which include;
# 9795 Tulip P6
Bust 37 Waist 33.5 Low hip 40.5
Shoulders 14.75 across Sleeve 30.62 center back to cuff
#79205 Lady Day P6
Bust 36.75 Low hip 40.5
Shoulders 14.75 across Sleeve 30.62 center back to cuff
P8
Bust 37.75 Low hip 42.5
Shoulders 15.5 across Sleeve 30.62 center back to cuff
#96915 Plaza P6
Bust 37 Waist 35 Low hip 42
Shoulders 15.25 across Sleeve 30.62 center back to cuff
I think I’m going to keep it, once I get used to the colour. I bought the Dark Poppy w. the hope that it would make a good signature piece without going too far out of my comfort zone. It is a pretty red - one of my friends called it a Chinese red when I showed it to her. I had hoped that it would be more into a blue-red range. Still, it’s not as orange as I had feared. I had asked FFM if she could design a few sets. So I’m holding out to see her suggestions before I decide. Meanwhile, I’ll try to see how it works with my existing pieces. Maybe inspiration will strike & I’ll come up with a few great go-to combinations.
Hopefully FFM can work her magic & help me decide. Usually, I'm happy to blunder about on my own. However, the coats are an investment for me & I don't want to make costly mistakes. Maybe I’ll get lucky & a great sale price will come along & seal the deal.
Oh how I wish JC would include the Maggie in their outerwear sales!!! It’s certainly outerwear here in sunny CA J. That way I could buy a Maggie (or two) without feeling silly for being hasty. It still feels a bit like booking travel plans. I often find myself asking; “Should I hold out for a better deal or buy now when they have what I want?”
Well, here’s hoping all you fab aficionada’s find lovely coats this season!
Heather:D
I decided on the leather opera gloves in mint (which are backordered for about a month, nooo!) but were marked down to $90. I then decided to be adventurous and throw in the Orange Lucille jacket, which has been marked down to $99.99. Darn you J. Crew, you sucked me in again!
ReplyDeleteanonymous @1:12:
ReplyDeleteCan you describe the Tabitha for me? My outlet says they have it, but they had trouble describing it.
Has anyone tried the wool-cashmere Harriet and or Carrie coats? Im now considering them in the heather acorn..I here the wool-cashmere is warm. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
I liked the orange Lucille but I have enough coats...that is one thing that takes up a lot of closet space! Plus, I am worried b/c mohair can be itchy....
ReplyDeleteI am trying to be strong and it is working:) I am holding off for the cardholders extra 20% off coming in early Dec. (Dec. 5)
kendra:
ReplyDeletei have the harriet in heather acorn. i personally really love it. it's not 100% warm enough for boston weather but it's much thicker than my madeline or lady day. i wore it today with a sweater underneath and it was warm enough but then again i was only outside for about 15 minutes. the fit is a bit sweater like. it doesn't have a-line shape like the lady day in that the waist part is rather boxy, but that's what i like about it. you can tie it to have a slimming effect in the waist. i tend to wear it over pants with heels and the length is perfect it's more casual than dressy i suppose for me compared to the double cloth coats. it feels incredibly soft and the heather acorn color is absolutely beautiful.
i debated over the carrie and i liked the fit better in that it was more feminine vs. the harriet but the collar was just too weird for me. i couldn't get it to look nice like in the catalog. it was weird left untied or tied. the SA struggled with showing me how it was supposed to go. it's not long enough for a bow and its too thin to just tie it once. anyway, i ultimately chose the harriet and i wear it everyday when my dress is casual. i just ordered the peacoat in the ivory so i might be wearing that with jeans now but the harriet i will love nonetheless.
Kendra, if you do a google image search for jcrew tabitha coat you can find a couple smallish pics of it.
ReplyDeleteIt is single breasted with a tab button detail at waist. It has patch pockets on each side of hip and hits at about mid thigh. They had it at the outlet store I went to a coupld of weeks ago in a beautiful red (darn you dark poppy) yellow and ivory. It was a beautiful coat but I didn't like the patch pockets.
Anyone know anything about the Pembridge Dot Camilla Dress?
ReplyDeleteSS at 11:04 a.m. says the puffer coats are $128 in the BM stores. Is that price for the longer puffer jacket (the one that looks to me more like a coat)? Does anyone know? I've wanted to buy one but was waiting for a sale. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have the tabitha from last year at the factory store and honestly I don't like it. It isn't short and it isn't long (it hits about low hip to mid thigh) and it has pockets on it at the bottom that bother me. I also don't like the "tab" that protrudes out of one side. It's hard to explain (look for pictures) but there's a completely attached belting detail and it continues on past the coat to button to the other side. It's a cute coat- in fact I complimented someone on theirs without noticing it was the same- but it doesn't look right on me. I'm very tall if that helps, I can't put my finger on it, but it just looks awkward. I gave it to my Mom and she doesn't want it either.
ReplyDeleteI just called my fave J Crew store in Orland Park, Ill., and they told me that the longer puffer jacket (to me, a coat) is not on sale. I want to buy one, but am waiting for it to be marked down. If someone sees it marked down in another state, could you post here or email me? swarren@scn1.com. THANK YOU! Stewart
ReplyDeleteKendra,
ReplyDeleteI had the same issue w/ the Carrie that Suilove had. I really wanted to love the Carrie but it just didn't work out. The collar was just awkward for me- I couldn't get it to look like the pic in the catalog no matter how hard I tired. I ordered it in ivory when it was on promo for $225. It was so pretty. I saw the brown IRL and the color reminds me of a paper sack and the fabric looked kind of nappy. I think they had just taken it out of the box so maybe that had something to do w/ the look.
I am going to try for the Lady Day in sea salt after Christmas. Hopefully it will be on sale in that color.
kendra
ReplyDeleteI have a tabitha and I love it. I find it very versatile, for casual wear or for office wear. Mine is in red, and I love it. I don't know how different is the outlet version, but if you want, I could send you pictures of mine
I read someone else's comment about don't liking it, but this person mentioned she is tall. I am petite (5'2") and I like how it looks on me.
Also, mine is in stadium cloth but came with thinsulate (which is unusual for this fabric).
Hope this helps,
Nobelle
@jliz I tried on the Pembridge Dot Camilla Dress. LOVED the look of the dress on the hangar, strongly disliked the fit. I found the skirt to be very body-hugging in my true size (6) while the top was far too loose and the straps too long. Also, the fabric is very thin and stiff. It's a shame because the dress looks gorgeous but did not work for me.
ReplyDeleteHeather:D...I created a couple of sets for you with the Dark Poppy and the Majestic Purple, which I thought you were also considering. Click Here and Here for the Dark Poppy. Click Here and Here for the Majestic Purple. HTH! Let me know if you need more help with the Dark Poppy. :)
ReplyDeletethanks all! suilove and anonymous @ 6:18:
ReplyDeleteWas the problem with the Carrie that you couldn't get the collar to lie flat or stay up? It looks so cute in the catalog/online? I think I'll try to find it at a store near me and try it on..I have been charging & returning coats for almost 3 weeks now!
Also, suilove:
What is your body type? I am not sure the boxiness/tie waist on the Harriet would be flattering on me. I'm 5'7", size 4, but don't have much of a waist--I have fairly broad shoulders, somewhat busty (34C), and a pretty undefined waist (read: a bit of pooch). Im more of a triangle shape--generally things that tie in the waist aren't uber-flattering. Any opinions?
I found pics of the Tabitha online, and I agree- I dont think the patch pockets would be too flattering on me either. I will probably stick with the lady day unless the Carrie works for me.
Hi FFM,
ReplyDeleteHurrah! Thanks so very much for the stylin' suggestions! Everything looks so sophisticated :}
I esp like the Madeline & jeans combo. Now I reallllly want to try it in Majestic Purple. Hmmmm... Maybe it will fit better in that colour anyway. It seems that there is a bit of variation in the coats.
I think I will keep the red Lady Day now that I've seen it paired up with some more adventuresome colours. Although I might not be brave enough to try the bright pink or yellow, your suggestions got me thinking, most esp the buff & olive tops. Also loved the pairing w. jeans. I thought it looked a bit to nautical when I tried it with a white blouse & dark trousers, the more muted top makes sense. Totally forgot those cute flats!
Thanks again,
Heather:D
P.S. gotta go AFK for a moment while I sneak a few print-outs to take with me next time I'm @ the B&M ;}
I just ordered the peacoat in camel. Have been looking everyone for one. Thanks for the free ship! I didn't have that!
ReplyDeleteKendra - I have the Carrie in heather acorn, and I have to say that I love it. It definitely isn't very thick though, so I'm definitely going to freeze this winter in Boston. I really like the collar, I think (and hopefully it does) look fine on me when it's not tied and folded down. I got it in a OP, I'm 5'2" and about 100lbs. There's enough room for me to wear a thicker sweater underneath. The arms and the whole coat definitely do have an a-line shape - the arms sort of bell out.
ReplyDeleteI ordered mine and it has some creases on the back from shipping, could I iron those out without trouble?
love,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your input! How do you usually wear the collar? I am falling in love with it the more I look at it on the website! I want to try it on in-store, but the nearest store that has it is about an hour away, and I can't make it until Fri or Sat at the soonest--I hope they don't sell out and/or raise the prices back online!
Im not sure about ironing it..does it say anything on the tag? I've never ironed cashmere..
I have the tabitha in grey and I love it. Only thing is since I'm only 5'2" the sleeves are a tad too long so I have to roll it back. I don't find the patch pocket to be a problem but I am hourglass shape. It will be more of a problem for someone peared shaped, I think.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think the dark poppy is a nice color and to me it acts as a neutral. I will pair it with black, white, camel, or gray. I won't pair it with forest green or yellow though.
I am at least 10 J Crew coats at last count, and I live in S. Cal so it's not like I really need the coats, but I just love them.
I'll have to check the tag.
ReplyDeleteI've been wearing the collar down like the model in the main picture online, which is just folded down. I like the collar this way.. I haven't really left it standing, but I'm sure that looks great too. It really isn't a very thick coat at all, that's probably my biggest complaint. I think how the coat looks on you would depend on whether you like the a-line shape or not.
It was very cold today, even for New England in November!
thanks! do you keep the tie hanging around the neck? i would worry that it would fall off!
ReplyDeleteWhat is jcrewchatter.com?
ReplyDeletei LOVE the carrie!
ReplyDeleteand for anon at 11:10 if you google jcrew chatter, up pops the thread where jcrew chatter was discussed at length
kendra: I bought the Carrie in black and I can safely say that the collar is the best aspect of it. Like the poster love, I am 5'2" and wear a 0P. It was a little big on me, but the length was just nice - and it looks ESPECIALLY good with skirts and boots.
ReplyDeleteI like buttoning the bottom two buttons and leaving the collar up sometimes, or just loosely tying the ribbons together with the collar up to keep away the chill.
It's a very classy, old-fashion coat. But if you're looking for something that gives your body some shape, then definitely get the Harriet, otherwise for a cutesy, girly coat, you can get the Carrie.
Anon@1110 and all: www.jcrewchatter.com was a private blog that no longer exists.
ReplyDeleteAnon. I actually have a website and see that people are visiting it from jcrewchatter. Not sure what it is. I just know that it is an incoming link to my website.
ReplyDeleteWho cares? NOT ME!
ReplyDeleteamanda- thanks! have you tried on the harriet? i've heard from others that it's actually more boxy, so Im curious about your comment. Is the Carrie rather fitted? I cant wait to make it over to my B&M and try it on!
ReplyDeleteI'm awaiting the Double-cloth Marie coat in the purple color. I don't own any purple, or any JCrew coats so I'm holding my breath.
ReplyDeleteAnyone own or try the Marie in any color?
The Harriet IS boxy. I truly LOVE the Harriet in the catalog, however, when I bought it and tried it on @ home, it fit like a stiff bathrobe. It was just NOT flattering on my body. I was hoping that it was going to be the coat of my dreams, but when the waist is cinched, the fabric bunches in an unflattering pounds-adding way. I was SO SAD about that (I ordered the heather charcoal, which I LOVE). Maybe a sleeker torso would have established a better fit. I love the pics of the Harriet still. Just not the IRL reality of it on me! Disappointing!
ReplyDeleteJenG.
Thanks for the comments on the Harriet. I haven't gotten a new nice piece of outerwear in like six years and have been keeping an eye on a few, including the supposedly flattering Harriet. I'm currently breastfeeding (hope that isn't too much of an overshare!) and I don't want to have to do a big size up. Has anyone bought the Marie coat? If so, what does "slight cocoon shape" mean? Is that catalogue for fitted? Also, if anyone has the Lille, is the belt a real belt that goes all the way around and detaches? And if not, is it annoying to put on quickly? Thanks in advance!
ReplyDeletelove -- I typically store my winter coats (including wool cashmere coats from J. Crew) down in my condo's storage area during the summer in those vaccuum plastic bags, so they come out pretty wrinkly. If they're horrible I'll just get them dry cleaned before wearing them, and that takes care of the creases. But if they're not too bad, I just hang them in the shower, aim the water away from them, turn up the heat, close the bathroom door and let the wrinkles steam out. This also works for formal dresses and suits, and probably just about anything else.
ReplyDeleteThanks kitchy!
ReplyDeleteI'll try that.
Kendra: The tie is attached to the collar, so I don't think it will fall off.
Anon @2:45 - I have the Lille and love it. The belt is integrated into the coat so you can't see it from the back - it is hidden between the outer coat and the lining. The coat has a slit on both sides where the belt comes out of to tie it in front. I always wear it tied since the coat is slighlty A-lined shape and I think it just looks better (and it doesn't really give you a choice to not have the belt). It doesn't bother me as far as getting the coat on quickly, since I end up throwing it on when I am in a rush and then just tying the belt if I don't have time to do all the buttons. I don't know if I described that very well but hope it helps a little bit! On the website you can see the belt detail pretty well too on one of the pictures :) I think it is warmer than the double cloth too. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteJust a quick psa: The Bellevue Square, WA B&M had the classic peacoat in Ivory for $179 plus an additional 50% off. Not sure whether it was the one with or w/o the Thinsulate. :)
ReplyDeleteElena M- just the info I needed! Thanks, it sounds like a great coat and comfier than the Marie!
ReplyDeleteTo La Petite Crew:
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the info about Soia & Kyo. I hadn't heard of them before and just went to their website to check it out. I love their coats. They look really warm. Do you know how they fit compared to J Crew sizing? I normally wear 0P (coats and pants) and XS (sweaters and shirts) in JCrew. Thanks :)
I received my J.Crew classic peacoat/with thinsulate in black yesterday, it is gorgeous, I only pay $120.00 + tax & shipping which came out to almost $150.00...J crew CS gave it to me with a 40% discount...that is amazing....I'm very happy with my purchase, and now my next target is the Lady Day Coat....
ReplyDeleteI am always on the look out for great bargains for brand name clothing. Thanks! I also checked this shirt apparel.
