J.Crew Email: Reminder About the 20% Off Sweaters

J.Crew sent an email reminding us (click here) that today is the last day they are offering 20% off select full-priced sweaters using promo code SWEATERS. I am curious if this promotion was successful or not.

Did anyone take advantage of this offer (either online or in-stores)? If so, please let us know which items you selected. :)

  1. By the looks of this blog, a few people caved for the heirloom henley cashmere for fear it would sell out (but I think we all know now that so much of this stuff comes back--it is a big game for them to replenish the website at varying intervals). BUT many DID NOT BUY simply because of OVERPRICED SHIPPING as they saved NO MONEY! It is noted on the other J Crew blogs as well.

J CREW WHEN ARE YOU GONNA WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE! It has been YEARS that you have WAY over-charged for shipping!! In fact, you lost me due to this fact several years back along with my change in style. NO OTHER RETAILERS DO THIS! GET WITH THE PROGRAM & YOU MAY BE SURPRISED! YOU ARE LOSING SALES BY MAKING MONEY ON SHIPPING--WE ARE TRAINED TO RECEIVE FREE SHIPPING OR DECENT FLAT RATE AT BEST FROM ALL THE OTHER RETAILERS!! Good Luck with this "promotion".

  2. Hm, I better purchase a sweater for myself before this promo ends. OH WAIT, it's only for womenswear! Wrap your head around that one.

  3. I went to the B&M at Madison Ave., and purchased the Chiffon-florette cardigan in Heather Chalk, and the Maria ruffle cardigan in Light Pewter. I caved because I thought these were really special cardigans that I could get a lot of use out of, and with the 20% off it was a decent price. I purchase all of my cashmere at Ann Taylor because the price is right (promo right now, purchase 2 get 30% off, 3 or more 40% off, plus I can stack a 25% off plus free shipping coupon on top of that), and their cashmere is top quality. I have cashmere sweaters from over 7 years ago that are in pristine condition, no pilling, classic styles. You definitely get more bang for your buck.

  4. I caved and purchased a Cashmere cardi in Light Spearmint during this sale after reading tweedybird.bird's review of the Collections Party and her mentioning the "visual delight of stacks of fluffy, soft spearmint colored sweaters"! LOL. I plan on wearing it with my Nantucket Fog Hammered Silk tank. It should be here today! :)

  5. No, I did not cave in. I want a spearmint color sweater too but 20% off plus paying for shipping is not worth it to me...always will be something else and like Covert5 said the stuff comes back.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I wanted to check today, but the website seems to be down...again.

  7. shopping at jcrew is just like shopping at the car dealerships- I always wonder if that was the best/ lowest price I could get and they always play games with you on the promos……

that being said, I did not take advantage of the 20% promo

    ReplyDelete
  8. No, but I DID take advantage of the 30% off Friends and Family at GAP/ON/BR, and saved over $100 on purchases for my family PLUS FREE SHIPPING for using my GAP card...YAY!!!!

  9. I really wanted the heirloom henley in Wild Peony, Black and Spearmint but like most I held off due to the shipping.

I know I could have called my PS and got the free shipping but I wanted to use my rewards and I live an hour away from my B&M. Too much hassle.

I agree with the person who said about J Crew is like a car dealer, I feel the same way!

  10. NO. I can't justify the 20% off with the high shipping fee. Covert5 summed it up rather well. The economy has me face to face with reality...I do not NEED any more sweaters. I will be sitting this one out...

  11. There are a few sweaters I want, but I didn't cave. I too will wait for a better deal.

  12. A bit OT, but I finally received my catalog, and I just wanted to ask where Anouck is? :) I LOVE her, and she is missed.

Also, in another post people were commenting that Vanessa looked way too thin. She does look surprisingly thin, but I love that she has smile lines on her face. It is SO refreshing to see on a model, and not have it airbrushed out. Yes she's 31, not 16. She looks gorgeous.

    ReplyDelete
  13. OT- Does anyone own the Metallic Herringbone Clea in persimmon? It sold out during the clearance and now it's back when you can't get the 30% off-in 4 sizes! If you type 96634 into the search it comes up.

Is it a game? Or do they pull sale items in popular sizes during these extra percentage off sales because they think they can get more for them later?

    ReplyDelete
  14. This is no big deal considering the high shipping charge. It is so hard to get deal on jcrew.com that I won't buy any in this kinda of economy. Let those VIP 6 digits customers spend, let's see how it goes.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I am so confused by J.Crew's policies. I have placed several orders using a free shipping code and then emailing or calling them to apply the student discount. I placed another order for some sale sweaters last night (tartine and merino rose cardigans) and then emailed them about the student discount. They replied that they'd be happy to do it but would have to remove my free shipping code. What the heck?! They are so inconsistent, I should just stick to B&M.

    ReplyDelete
  16. the model would have less lines on her face if she actually ate and got some nutrition. starving yourself does not do any favors for your skin.

    ReplyDelete
  17. In the close up Vanessa looks like she's done some hard livin'. It looks like she's smoking heavily to stay thin. God knows what else she's doing to her body to stay that thin at her age.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Question: Do I need anything to redeem 20% off at B&M? Are the Cambridge cable sweaters included?

I was going to stop by this afternoon, so thanks for your help!

  20. I did not take advantage of this offer either. Like everyone else has said, it's not that enticing when 20% basically covers shipping. I was at a B&M last night and wasn't even tempted to buy anything - that's a first for me.

FFM - Did you receive a card or invite for the BR/Gap/Old Navy F&F? I had a friend who worked at BR and she would have cards to hand out to friends. I wonder if the policy has changed since then. TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  21. green_dino: I received an email for the Friends and Family event...did you get one?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I did not take advantage of it reality has too hit me I just can't afford to shop that way I have been.

jcrewjunkie: You are going to love the spearmint color I have it in the Cambridge Cable cardi, it looks great with grey, and also the dark slate Embellished Graphic Tee.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Actually, I really wanted to reply back to JCrew on that e-mail reminder with a curt "No Thanks". Needless to say, I did not take advantage off the offer. Like someone else said, I'm off to Gap/Banana with my FF coupons.

    ReplyDelete
  24. FFM - No I didn't receive an email =( I guess I'm not part of the list. Kinda weird b/c I have the luxe card and get tons of promos as well as invites to their "events."

    ReplyDelete
  25. *Deleted first post due to incorrect link*

green_dino: That is SO weird...maybe you should call their CS if you want your own one-time use Online code, otherwise...did you see the post Alexis had the other day that shows the printable one for In-store that can be used multiple times? Click Here . :) You could use it to shop in any or all of the stores and get the 30% off deal.

  26. FFM - THANK YOU for sending me the link =)

  27. anon at 12:47:I think things end up back in the sale section because they are returns. I dont think JC pulls things and then puts them back on purpose after a promo. I've ordered things that suddenly appear in sale out of nowhere and when i receive them, they sometimes have store tags on them where the price part of the tag is missing (Someone gave it as a gift and it was returned). I dont go crazy anymore to order stuff when it first comes out- it will ALWAYS end up in sale. Remember the chiffon sequin ruffle navy cardi being sold out? how many times has it been in sale since then? at least three that I can remember. I went crazy last spring to find the candy tweed dress, found it in charlotte, paid FULL price for it, ($345.00!!)HATED it, returned it, and now I STILL am seeing it on occasion in the sale section for $129.99! obviously others hated too!

  28. OT: I am looking at a pea coat on ebay from 2007. Does anyone know if the style/fit is any different this season? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I did take advantage of the 20%. I got the cashmere bateau with the bow in putty, the cashmere long sleeve T in golden cypress, and the dreaded Lili ruffle-chiffon cardi. I have to say I do like the Lili enough to keep it. It is thin - but I live in Southern Cal so I don't need it for warmth. And the hook closures are questionable - but I decided to leave the hooks fastened and then I put the sweater on over my head. It is a little silly - but I like the idea of it. I wouldn't go so far as to say I feel like George Washington in it.

Question - is anyone wearing any cashmere in the citron color. I am having a love/hate relationship with it. I want to like it - but it looks so close to the color of a highlighter pen - I debated hard about the golden cypres v. the citron and in the end went with cypress and now I think I want Citron. Help!

Also -- I decided the star pins would make fabulous gifts for my mom and BOTH, yes I have 2, mothers-in-law. My local J Crew did not have them, but one across town did and they are on sale for $19 and change. $6 to ship. I got one in each color. I am so very excited about these for gifts!

PS - this is "lucegirl" but I can't seem to log on from my work computer...

  30. anon@12:49pm: I had the exact same experience yesterday. I have decided not to order from the site in the foreseeable future, and just stick to b&m's.

FYI: I was also told that they will no longer be applying the student discount if it is not done through an associate.

    ReplyDelete
  31. musthavejcrew: The fit is the same, I believe. I purchased two from last season. A tip: If the coat on eBay costs anything more than $99, go to google, click on shopping, the type in "JCrew Peacoat". Scroll to the bottom of the screen. Where it says "Stores" click on JCrew. Then, back at the top, where it says "Sort by relevance" change it to "sort by price: lowest to highest". You should find the thinsulate version in regular and tall for $99. I bought two.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I did not use this offer because I agree with others that it just wasn't that enticing, especially since they took a bunch of things off of promo before they offered this code.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks jcrewlover-

I guess you're right-the timing was 'interesting' on some items though. // Anon 12:47

  34. I am passing on this one as well for the same reasons many Aficionadas stated: exorbitant shipping, policy inconsistencies, high prices..
Oh, J crew, as Divinyls sung:"..may be one day you'll learn".:)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Passing on the j.crew sweaters promo,

*BUT*, as others have said I did take advantage of the ON/GAP/BR FF event and ordered 3 sweaters, a down coat, a button up, and 2 long sleeve shirts for under 170$$ *WITH* shipping.. got to love the $7 flat rate..I hope J.crew takes heed, it makes a big difference.

AND, on a non-sweater (but very j.crew) note..

i ordered 2 winter coats (lady day and the shipley) and asked for the 30% off wool coats, which they're doing in my store (cambridge, ma)-- they called the store, put me on hold, but ended up giving it to me!! Each coat was $210, which was amazing!! And free shipping code from this site, taboot!!! I hope they fit. today was an amazing shopping day for me : )

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'll pass. When they go on sale it's better than 20% off.

  38. I was lucky enough to combine the 20% sweaters discount with my student discount to get 5 sweaters for about $250 at my B&M. Lots of cute cardigans to keep me warm in my cold office all winter long!

  39. COVERT5:Why do you assume how other people on this blog feels?quick speaking for everyone. If someone wants to pay fp don't put them down for it and tell them they have not saved money, calm down for heaven sake!

    ReplyDelete
  40. oooooooo i wish i had found this blog earlier...i was literally talking about how expensive j. crew got!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Exactly! I find myself rolling my eyes every time I read one of covert's posts. Ugh. I picture her as being that mean girl on the playground that got everyone to gang up one someone...just because. It's ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Okay, no one answered my question, so I took matters into my own hands and went to my B&M. (It was the first day of GAP F&F and the last day of J. Crew's sweater promo, so a perfect afternoon for shopping!)

I was able to get the Cambridge cable crewneck for $40. First, it was marked down from $78 to $59.50 at the store. I thought that was the promo! Then when I checked out, another 20% was taken off for the sweater promo! AND the SA let me use my student discount on top of that! So I got it for just over half of the regular price! I had wanted a gray cable-knit sweater for over a year, so I am a happy camper!

That's all my budget will allow for now, but I am pleased :) Maybe my B&M has a better selection, but there were tons of sweaters discounted to $59.50 (cardis too), then another 20% off of that! I would go to your B&M if you have time tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  43. OT- My Lulu's are making squishy sounds! Did someone say something about baby powder? Thank goodness I didn't pay FP.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Can I ask a potentially stupid question? Who is this Vanessa that everyone talked about? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Her name is Vanessa Lorenzo and she's in the current catalog. She's a lot skinnier in this catalog than in previous ones: http://www.vanessalorenzo.com/galeria.php?id_seccion=6

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't think I would have caved even if it was 20% off + free shipping.

I am enjoying bigger sales and promotions everywhere else.

I am definitely spending less for JCrew, even though I am not spending any less than last year overall.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree with covert5 and I said the same thing a few times on this blog-I will NOT pay a $18.50 shipping no matter how much I wanted something from the website. It's ridiculous...

Something different/better always comes along even if I skip on a few items I really like. 20% off sweaters is not such a great deal since all prices drop down to 1/2- 1/3 of the original price anyway for those who wait for items to go on sale -why not get 5 instead of 2 sweaters for the same price, I'm a woman after all, I "need" as many sweaters as one can fit in their closet! :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Annette- Where is your B&M? Just wondering if its the same as the one I go to so I'll actually make the trip. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ah, yes, that would've been good information to include! :) I'm in Atlanta and went to the Lenox Square store. I often don't find as good deals there as are mentioned here, but I lucked out today! I don't remember all the deals, but it seemed like a lot of sweaters were on promo in addition to the 20% off! Cords too!

    ReplyDelete
  50. To the ANONS who don't like me and anyone I may have "rolling their eyes" when they read my posts..I apologize if I come across as all inclusive in my commentary. I just took the general consensus of opinion (with regard to shipping) that I have been reading for awhile and have personally felt for SO long and wrote a post I thought JC might read (like I think they really give a S$$T what I think;) San Fran and others, thanks for backing me. After re-reading it, I only said "we" are used to free shipping and "many did not buy because the discount merely paid for shipping" is that not true for most? I am just looking for more from them--if things are so bad--get with the program like EVERY other retailer and give up the hoity attitude. Like someone mentioned, they act scared to post a sale because of how they are then perceived.

Correct me if I am wrong but I do have to say that I cannot recall ever caring if someone paid full price for something nor put them down for it??

    ReplyDelete
  51. i wasn't sure what all the fuss was over vanessa but i just compared her old pics to the new j crew catalog and she is looking way malnurished.... someone feed her a biscuit

    ReplyDelete
  52. sanfranciscoca: The difference is that you don't scream your opinion like she does, her posts come off sounding arrogant and degrading. There are alot of people on this site who don't have the luxury of living close to a store, they have to pay the shipping or wait for a fs code.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Can we not personally attack one another? I don't mind reading comments questioning the *points* made in other comments (in fact, that makes for really great conversation). However, I find comments about people's character unnecessary and a distraction (and frankly makes me want to comment less).

Let's be friendly and helpful. :)

And now back to J.Crew! :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Did anyone try or own the metallic-flecked pencil skirt or the shimmery python pencil skirt? IS the material nie? Is the shimmer/ metallic thread really noticeable? Are they too much for day wear? Also how is sizing? Wish there was a JCrew here.......Thanks so much.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Dear Anon @12:30 YOU ARE MY HERO!!!

I just ordered the Classic Peacoat in Dark Poppy and am soo excited! I've been looking for a Red Peacoat and almost bought one one overstock but was hesitant b/c of not knowing what the quality would be like.
Thanks for the awesome links and the info about googling; I'm totally going to do that in the future!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Annette- Thanks...even though I live no where near your B&M...hehe got excited for nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sorry :( Your B&M might be good too--I don't know how much they vary.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Anon @ 5:13,
I've tried both skirts, and purchased the python shimmer. In the metallic fleck, I think the "fleck" is pretty discreet. If you're looking for day wear, that's probably your best bet. It is like the double serge but with little flecks of metallic.

I loved the python shimmer but ended up returning it yesterday after much debate (with myself:). It is awesome for the holidays, especially with some cute silver shoes. It is black with a lot of silver in it; very festive. I returned because it is pretty thick (thicker than the double serge) and I felt that it added inches to my hips (as a size 12, I don't need any extra inches) and wasn't very flattering on me.

    HTH!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anon @ 5:13,
Sorry! Forgot to mention sizing...I think it runs TTS. I am a 10 in JCrew a-line skirts and a 12 in their pencil skirts and this was no exception.

    ReplyDelete
  60. On the topic of sweaters and crazy prices... Hee! Is it weird that I keep hoping J.Crew and CrewCuts sizes keep getting bigger so I can eventually buy the GIRLS sweaters? They're cheaper and cuter!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Towson MD store still had 50% off sale items, and the word "sale" on both sides of the front of the store. Sounds like JCrew really doesn't have a problem advertising a sale :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. LOVE this blog - although I'm buying more because of it! LOL. Speaking of buying - can someone please give me a quick review on the Owen hobo? It's on sale and I would LOVE to have it - can't decide between "champagne" or "terra cotta" - I want a nice almost everyday bag - but I wear a lot of black and grays and denim. Any advice out there? Or is there another bag I should be looking at??

    ReplyDelete
  63. I ordered the Bateau in Bright fuschia. I may have been able to get a better deal on it by waiting. But if I wear it 3 times before it gets marked down, a future lower price doesn't bother me a bit :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. elizabeth in mo - I believe the Owen was reviewed a few months back - search "Owen" at the top of the main page and it should pop up. I think that the general consensus was that it was very nice but scratched easily.

    ReplyDelete
  65. OT, but I placed an order using the free shipping code and emailed to have my student discount applied. I got this email from JCrew, and find their horrible customer service appalling. Why even offer a student/educator discount if it's considered some special promotion? I can't buy my items at the store because I wear a tall (probably how other tall and petites feel). For that, I am stuck with their outrageous shipping?

    > Promotional coupons are not combinable with any other discount. If,
    > however, you would like to use your student discount instead of the free
    > shipping coupon that is already on the order, we would be more than
    > happy to reverse the shipping coupon and apply the student discount.

    ReplyDelete
  66. elizabeth in mo: Alexis had a post on it at the end of June: Click Here , and jenn_brak gave a mini-review the other day as well:

    * jenn_brak said...
All - I just noticed that the Owen hobo is on sale. For those of you who were thinking about it, I LOVE mine. It is very chic and pretty much timeless too. To give a fair perspective though, I do wish the gold studs had been on both sides of the bag so that I would not have to think about front or back. However, this is a very minor complaint and this is, I think, a good investment bag. It is lined and much rommier than it appears. If this enables anyone, Enjoy!*

  68. JCrew's sweaters have gotten so thin and "shrunken" and expensive that I've been forced to rediscover MARSHALL'S! YAHOO!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I didn't use this promotion because I had already bought some sweaters awhile back and I just didn't think it was that great of a deal.

I did however use the Gap/BR 30% Friends and Family discount. I also had rewards cards there, and with free shipping on top of all of that, I saved over $100!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I am not upset about the high shipping charges it is the price of doing business with J Crew if I want their clothes, I don't have any other choice.

If you don't like something you have the right to go elsewhere and give someone else your hard earned dollar.

You know dealing with J Crew you are going to get screwed over with preorders, and orders getting cancelled if you wait and order when the inventories are low, you run that risk because of the mess of this past summer, and their well documented system problems. I CHOOSE not to take those risks, it is not worth the aggravation. If someone is going to get a better deal than me and willingness to take those risks hey that is great but don't put me down because I choose to CAVE and pay fp.

    ReplyDelete
  71. SanFranciscoCA:
    It's really well said!

    covert5:
    I share your frustration!

I used to like JCrew more. But what JCrew does these days really put me off.

The other day, I called in JCrew CS in order to correct a mistake they made -- guess what? the CS representative *offered* me that she can ship my order with expedited shipping service so that I can get it faster. Yeah, sure, why not. I mean, I thought she was offering it for free. But it turns out, she wanted me to pay for the shipping. Is she just nuts or what to convince me pay for extra shipping when the reason why they need to ship it is because they made a mistake? I demanded free shipping because it's all because of their mistake, then the CS willy nilly agreed to do that. But then she asks me if I want to add any cashmere scarfs or sweaters today. JESUS, if I wanted to order them, I will. But I won't make a decision over the phone just because she asked me. That question only left me disgusted instead of boosting my shopping spirit.

JCrew, if you're desperate to sell off your low quality cashmere to me, then lower the price accordingly. But DO NOT make your CS people do cheap sales speeches to me (especially when they are dealing with their own mistakes), because it sounds really disgusting.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I think JCrew charges high shipping in order to compensate their luxurious catalog shooting trips and excessive catalog distributions.

Why are they sending me catalogs with exactly same contents but differs only by the covers? What a waste of trees...

    ReplyDelete
  73. Annette, WOW! My B&M wouldn't allow the 20% or the student discount because the 59.50 was already "promotional". That is great for you, but ticks me off!

    ReplyDelete
  74. the sweet life: I am so glad you put my links to good use! Gotta share the sweet deals! I bought the classic peacoat with thinsulate in red poppy as well and it is beeeaaauuuutiful! I bought that one in a tall small and got it tailored. I also got the black classic pea with thinsulate in an regular xs (my usual size). Could NOT be happier about both purchases :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. I took a pass on this promo, not serious enuf for me; I did red phone one sale item to get free s/h. Then I went to Banana and Old Navy and used my 30% f/f coupon and bought lots! Jcrew needs to be more serious in these times.

    ReplyDelete
  76. No, I'm still satisfied with all of my 50% off deals from last week. I got a spearmint long sleeved crewneck that was reduced to $99. less the 50%, less 15% teacher disct. and it came to $35.00!!! Crystal button cardigans that were $89 less both discounts, that came to 29.00. and several beaded tees and a great zip/button fleece jacket for $17.00! So, I'm holding off - forget 20% off full price. I'll watch the store for the next group of markdowns. I'm betting this is only the first coupon wave!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Oh - that spearmint should have read "cashmere" long sleeved crew neck!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Sorry this is a bit OT but can anyone compare/contrast the fit of the Tuesday Trench and the Classic Peacoat in terms of length, width, warmth, etc? The peacoat, even in xs, swallows me and I was just curious if the trench was any slimmer.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Has anyone seen or tried on the Crawford blouse? It looks cute

    ReplyDelete
  80. Hi! I'm not sure if anyone is still looking at the weekly exchange links, but I saw the earlier post today re. coats. I have two wool cashmere coats NWT I'd like to sell if anyone is interested. I have a camel size 10 Plaza coat WITH thinsulate and a 10 tall double breasted black coat WITH thinsulate. Since I have to drive everywhere around this city, I find myself favoring my peacoat. Thx.

  81. If anyone sees the honey glaze Penny on sale at a B&M, can you please advise? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Anon 5:13-I own the metallic flecked pencil skirt in black and have tried on the python. Like smarty, I found the python unflattering. It fits differently than most of the other JC pencil skirts. However, I LOVED the metallic flecked. It definitely is subtle enough for day. In fact, others would probalby have to look carefully to see the metallic threads running through it. The fit is similar to the double serge, but the material is more flannel-y/felty/wooly. HTH!

  83. OT- Does anyone know if the Jcrew mathstick jeans ever go on sale or promotion? Thanks.

  86. Just repteating everyone else's thoughts here: I had been watching one of the slightly more expensive cashmere sweaters for a few weeks now and waiting for a promo. It is a catalog/online only item, so I can't get it in the B&M store. So I was thrilled when I saw the 20% of sweaters, as this was th exact item that I wanted. And I waited till this evening when I came home to finally buy it.

Then, like everyone else, I got to the shipping charges, added tax, and whoosh! There went the promotion. Basically, that ate up 3/4 of the promotion. I guess I wasn't that excited to save 5%. Sure, I can always bring it back if it hasn't been worn and get either a price adjustment in 2 weeks or just buy it on sale when it goes on sale, but I'm not going to get that hefty shipping fee back.

Like someone else said, it will be more satisfying when the sweater goes on sale. And, as someone who rushed into buying quite a few full-priced items that were quickly "disappearing" the last couple seasons, I was pretty surprised to see them re-appearing again and again - both as full price and sale items. Why does J.Crew release multiple runs of the same clothing over various months? I thought they were on the whole "limited inventory" plan.

Like everyone else, I used my Gap 30% off and bought stuff. I also went to the J.Crew outlet in Leesburg and bought a cashmere cardigan for $80, with tax. It was more satisfying.

This is the very first time I've ever actually resisted a 20% off J.Crew promo - especially on an item that has been in my cart for weeks. But I just don't feel that it's worth it without free or at least halfway reasonable shipping. It's not like I'm going to die if I don't get more sweaters. My closet is full enough.

  87. I too love the Owen bag. Still a steep price, even on sale. Any comments on the leather? I am curious if it has the same feel/texture as the uptown totes. The bag looks more like suede than leather to me.I love a thicker durable leather for everyday handbags. The horn handle makes it look very designer ( Ysl ). If anyone does go for it, please blog! I can't make up my mind.

  88. Did anyone try the Madeline wool dress? Is it possible to have a review? It looks so pretty in the catalog and online but my concern is that sometimes the "slight A-line" is actually too flared on me, especially in petite sizes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  89. To the anon who asked - Yes, Matchstick Jeans do go on sale.

And on a related note, I am peeved right now because the Matchstick Cords I ordered in OCTOBER that were waitlisted until 11/22 have now been waitlisted until 12/1. Will I ever get them?

  90. Yeah, my B&M seems to be pretty lenient with multiple promotions/discounts. Lenox Square, for anyone in the Atlanta area! :)

  91. Anon @ 10:28- Then when do the matchstick jeans go on sale? Any specific time? The ones online now have been fp for a long time and it seems like they are really popular...so just wondering. Thanks anyways^_^

  92. OK I know this is kind of late - but I got the Crewneck Cable Sweater on promo for $59.50 + 20% + 15% student discount, so it was about 40 odd dollars. This was in downtown Seattle.

  93. I bought the Madeline wool dress. I didn't like it. I didn't like how the ruffles laid and the center piece looks off, not tapered to the chest, it just kinda hangs. Definitely not worth $200. The fit was not great either and I even sized down like CS recommended.

  94. elizabeth in mo -- I just got the Owen today and it's beautiful. It's big enough to go over your shoulder, but also small enough to carry on your arm. I was also torn between the champagne and the terra cotta, until i saw the terra cotta in person. Have you seen it? It's definitely more on the orange side, and more orange than it looks online I think. I got the champagne, which is a beautiful color and a great neutral. it'll go with everything. I definitely recommend the bag, especially at this price.

  95. anon @ 12:30

    Thank you!

However (complaining about J.crew, not you), I noticed that their sybil coat--from last year--is on sale for $169. Considering that I paid $69 for the same coat last year, I think that's frustrating and unfair. Outside of the occasionally X% off this week! sales, I don't understand how prices on sale items will actually get marked UP after a year. Ah well...

  96. And about the leather on the Owen, it's not as thick as the uptown. It's not suede either, but the thickness and flexibility is somewhere between leather and suede.

  97. Owen hobos:

I just checked the inventory on those (put 99 into the "number" box. If there is less than 99, it'll tell you that your request cannot be fulfilled, and show how many are there). I'm not 100% sure that this is reliable, but in the past, the CS's have collaborated the online inventory. If the little boxes are to be trusted, there are at least 99 of each color, and that current price is still rather high for me. I do love it--thank you for the recs!--but I'll wait for the price to drop below $200 before I make a splurge.

  98. katherined: I have never tried on the peacoat, but I can tell you that the Tuesday Trench was never going to fit me! Not even in a zero and I am normally a 2/4 in JCrew coats! The body of the Tuesday is very roomy.
Do a search for the Tuesday Trench on this blog because a bunch of us were talking about the wool Tuesday Trench at one point (like a month or 2 ago) and the sizing of it! Hope that helps!

  99. alee: what did you think of the handles on the Owen? Aren't they rigid? Do you find the Owen easy to carry on the shoulder?

  100. it does look like cashmere may be leaving the stores, as someone suggested. I went to University Village in Seattle today. There were some great sale items. Bootcut cords in some colors for 29.99. Stretch donegal tweed jackets for 99.99. AND the Kandinsky rose skirt (a la Michelle O) for 49.99. With teacher discount, much better still! Not much holiday stuff out, though.

  101. Someone asked about the Madeline dress -- I recently purchased it at B&M (full price - ugh) and really like it. I think the ruffles are very nicely executed - not as overwhelming as the victoria ruffle cami which I am going to return. And after I bought the dress, I was surprised to read the description on-line was an a-line style - it's much more straight than what I would call a-line. I like the dress because it's perfect for work morphing into evening.

My one frustration though is because the ruffle is so pretty - you don't really need accessories - but it's hard to not try and accessorize it! I have the crackle pumps in pewter and sherbert which it looks nice with. I was toying with putting a tissue t-neck under it like they did with the Blair dress on page 90 of the Holiday 08 catalog. Thoughts?

PS - again - this is "lucegirl" but I can't seem to get my google/blogger working...

  102. anon @ 1027: I found the Madeline to be more straight than A-line as well. And very roomy, I sized down once but I probably could have sized down one more time. Hope this helps!

  103. Katherine D: there was an entire thread dedicated to the fit of the Tuesday Trench about a couple of months ago. I do own the Tuesday and it definitely runs large. It is quite roomy in the waist area (even when sized down) which is resolved by the belt. IMO the fabric of the Tuesday is finer and more luxe. HTH.
