Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to take advantage of the "secret sales", the additional 50% off final sale items (percentage ranges from store to store), or to see some new arrivals in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

  1. Well, I've already visited JC again today. I know I said I wouldn't, but I decided to return the peacoat I ordered 2 months ago cause it was looser than I wanted it to be. I did however pick up a vest with w/e came out of that return though.

Additionally, the "secret" sales aren't exactly secret anymore now that the have actual signs that say "Additional 50% off sale items", not to mention the new decor with 'SALE' branded all over the windows.

  2. I visited the B&M in Georgetown today. Like many stores, they are offering 50% off sale items and have many "specials" as well: discounts on some cardigans, turtlenecks, trouser jeans, high heel jeans, corduroys, and wool outerwear to name a few. The sale section in this store is quite big; they had velvet ecoles in olive and dark blue, a dozen or so wool fionnas, dozens of pairs of very brightly colored corduroys (mostly matchstick), chinos, wool tuesday trenches, trouser jeans, cashmere sweaters in a few styles, one of the ruffled, silk sleveless tops that has been so popular, wool trousers, tissue turtlenecks, and lots more. Oh, I forgot, DOZENS of sketchbook belles and aviator flats and mjs. There are so many other items I haven't listed!

  3. How long do promotion prices usually last? I want to check out the Melanie and Lea cardigans, but won't be able to make it until the weekend.

  4. did anyone else see the dismal retail figures that were released today? jcrew wasn't included in the list i saw, but many other retailers-- from wal-mart to saks-- were. all of them except wal-mart are selling less--in some cases MUCH less-- than they did at this time last year. i expect to walk into a b&m before the end of the year and find EVERYTHING on sale-- and at very deep discounts. the georgetown store, which is usually bustling, literally didn't ring a single sale (at least not that i heard) during the hour and a half i was there. j crew is hurting, ppl! and just when they're trying to re-position themselves as a "luxury" retailer. on the one hand, yea! many more, much deeper, discounts! on the other hand, possibly boo... i was wondering if chronic low sales might lead to a precipitous drop in quality and style, since there won't be much $ coming in to invest in the famous "couture inspired" fabrics and enamel buttons inspired by vintage japanese kimonos circa 1850 or whatever ;). i tease, but then again i LOVE those little details. of course, if i lose my job because of the financial crisis, it won't matter what the prices or the quality at jcrew are, b/c i won't be buying anything! anyway, i wonder, how does the JCA community see this?

  6. jackie: Walmart . . . right. How does JC relate again?

  7. I went to the Jcrew in Palo Alto today hoping to score the chocolate Lizzie driving mocs with the additional 50% off, but the SA said it was full priced even tho online said it was $89.99. :(

If I go to a different Jcrew and they don't carry shoes in the store, do you think I can ask them to order it using the online price with the additional 50%? And with the student discount? :)

  8. jeff,
PleaSe:) Jackie is just talking store sales in general--she is not comparing JCrew to Walmart!!!

But, let me say...received a cashmere sweater from JCrew with a hole in it this week....it was a $200+ dollar sweater too...

    Thanks a bunch:)

  10. Has anyone seen the Juliet midheels or the Salina flats on sale in their store? I'm looking for the bright peacock color in particular, nitty-gritty detail: size 9. If you'd let me know with the store location, I'd really appreciate it!

  11. I was in the store in Orlando on Wednesday and they had 50% off Final Sale which lasts through this weekend. 14. Anyone shop the Palm Beach Gardens, Fl store? Or Boca Raton?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Audrey,
The juliet midheals are on sale in the Greenwich CT location in peacock. So are the salina flats. 203-661-5181.
Wondering if anyone has seen the serengeti clutch at their local store.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow, some stores have lots left; was in the Walnut Creek CA store and Pleasanton store yesterday, not much left at either place, mainly bigger sizes. Really picked over, waah. I would love to score a lydia blouse. I am waiting for the paillette cardi to go on sale. Agree that JC should have some more serious sales, saw the report of major retailers hemmoraging, and Banana Rep. having 25% off all for BR cardholders.

  17. I have the plum pea coat in a size L that I am willing to trade for a Petite L or sell for price paid. If interested e-mail me at lfinazz1 @ yahoo dot com

    Thanks

  18. I know a couple of you were looking for the navy lydia in size xs. I have one that I haven't worn but I bought it at full price when they first came out. If you want it I will sell for price paid.

  22. FYI: Ann Taylor has 30% off all full price and they're shipping is only $6!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I was able to call my B&M (Houston Galleria) before showing up and they were nice enough to check the shelves for styles, sizes, and colors of a few of the things y'all have mentioned. They put them all on hold for me and I was thrilled to walk away with a wool herringbone Astrid jacket for $50! I wasn't able to combine my extra 10% I received two weeks ago, but am still pleased with the price and think I'll get a lot of wear out of the jacket.

I also wanted thank you for all the suggestions and comments you share on here - thanks to you I was able to return a final clearance item as the fit was not as explained to me. I am so impressed by how the situation was handled and never would have spoken up about it if not for y'all!

    ReplyDelete
  24. If any one wants to take advantage of the 30% off at Ann Taylor, you can still use the 20% off codes on top of that. I had a mailer, but the codes are posted at retailmenot.com also.

This morning, I purchased a scoopneck cashmere tee and a darling cashmere cardi with rhinestone buttons. I have seen these sweaters as well as the plum cashmere cardigan with the waist detailing already, and they are fantastic in person. Also, Ann Taylor fully deserves the nod to its cashmere quality it received in In Style magazine. I have some of their cashmere that is on its 6th season.

They have J Crew beat on the cashmere sweaters durability at least!

  25. Fabulousfloridamommy,

There are some Juliet Safari midheels listed on ebay right now in size 10. Not my auction and not affiliated in any way. I was looking for a 5.5 and came across these ones.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Not to keep harping on Ann Taylor but while loading up my shopping bag, I discovered they have a feature where it will tell you which stores stock an item if it (or a size) is sold out on-line. Can you imagine if J Crew had this feature!! Cheers to Ann Taylor!! $6 shipping, stackable codes and find it for you feature! Please J Crew, pay attention!!

  32. Has anyone else seen the Juliet Midheels on sale in their store? I tried the Greenwich location (thanks Marnie!) but they don't have my size :(

    ReplyDelete
  33. Christina- are you size 9? if so, drats, I was gonna call them too.

speaking of the Juliets, i'm wearing a pair now- i had insoles in, and blamed them, but the shoes make a squishy sound when i walk. has anyone ever experienced this before? i took the insoles out and it's still happening...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Has anyone seen an ivory elizabeth in xs in their stores? It's sold out online. Thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Laura - I'm a size 6.5, usually - the smallest they had was a 7.5, so it's still worth a shot. Can you tell me how those heels run, size-wise? I've found that the sizing in J Crew's shoes is seriously inconsistent...

    ReplyDelete
  36. OT but, does anyone have the Simone jacket? They only have XS and S left in the sale section on the website and I have been eyeing this for quite some time. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  37. People, I have NEVER paid for shipping from JC - I've either always had a coupon code that covered it online or went into the store to place the order.

Rude awakening at the RED PHONE last night ... making orders w/ a CS, he failed to tell me the subtotal / shipping cost (only said the total), so I was shocked when I got home and saw the shipping charge on the orders online. Quickly called and was belabored by a different CS that free shipping from the RED PHONE for sale items went away w/ the website upgrade in June. I proceeded to give him several order numbers where I had free shipping from the RED PHONE and didn't even ask for it (all on sale items). He eventually covered it for tonight but said he made BIG COMMENTS all over my account saying it was a one time deal. (Note, I managed to keep my cool during most of this and was not rude ... given I had to spend AN HOUR on the phone w/ him). YUCK!

Then they would not add the student discount to the two orders I made (one for FINAL SALE items so I got the 50% off, and another for EXTRA 30% on items I wasn't so sure about) ... saying only stores have the discretion to combine the coupons, and online CSs could not.

Before you used to be able to get around the shipping charge by adding a FULL PRICE item to your order from the RED PHONE, but they said even doing that they'll just not charge you shipping for that item, but charge shipping for the sale items still. Very annoyed!

My shopping days at the RED PHONE may be over if there is ZERO benefit in doing it (besides if you have FINAL SALE items you want them to match the in-store promo).

    ReplyDelete
  38. Has anyone seen the IVORY penney boucle jacket; I need a size 2 ~ sold out online, boo.

    ReplyDelete
  39. JCrewJunkie: My store had 3 or 4 of the Simone coats last night... not sure what sizes, as I didn't really look at them - but I know they had a few. Might be worth calling to see if they have your size! 248-449-6690... depending on which associate you get on the phone, sometimes the names of sale items confuse them - just describe the jacket and tell them it's on the rack with the herringbone fionas.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Christina- sorry, I saw above someone talking about sz. 9 and assumed it was you.

As far as I can tell, they are TTS.

I've noticed the squishiness is mostly on carpet- of course this may be b/c the noise from the heel covers up the squishy sound on hard floor. I am not pleased by this! I feel like an idiot! I'm trying to slide my foot more and push my foot into the sole of the shoe, but I've never experienced this before.

    ReplyDelete
  41. jcrewjunkie: I have the Simone and sized down in it from S to XS. It's a little snug in the shoulder/arm area but fine in the torso. The S just added too much volume/bulk. HTH! :)

  42. If anyone sees a persimmon Clea jacket in size 6, please post the store. Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. how much are the tissue turtlenecks on sale for in the store !?!?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Jcrewjunkie, I bought the simone jacket and I was rather disappointed with it. The jacket was unlined and the fabric was basically a heavy felt, not at all what I expected for the price. I tried both the xs and small and found the xs to be too cropped and the small to be too boxy. Hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Does anyone know if the charcoal berry astrid jacket is available in stores? Also, is it on sale? If anyone sees it on sale or sees the Desert Floral Bauble necklace let me know. I appreciate it!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ladies-
Anyone have the serengeti peep toe that is in July 2008 catalog and has narrower heel? Does it also run smaller? or TTs?

I have the SAME squishy sound problem with my Juliets!! OMG--that's interesting that people are all dealing with that! It's annoying!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Does anyone know what's on sale at the Rockefeller Center and Columbus Circle J Crews?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Covert5- glad to know I'm not alone- Are you doing anything about it besides trying to ignore it?!

    ReplyDelete
  49. kalimaire,

The charcoal berry astrid is NOT on sale. Only the blue.

I have the purple and love it! So chic:)

The blue was just too bright and the gray did not show the detail and was a bit boring....in my humble opinion...

    ReplyDelete
  50. Laura-
No--I tried them on and I can hear it. I haven't worn mine yet for extended period but I do love them. They are definitely a little more comfortable than other J Crew shoes IMO. I was hoping it would go away with break in but mine are the buttercup and not going to wear them a ton or anything--just more sporadic so that break in may take some time:(

Also-anyone with Abstract Floral Print dresses in either strapless or black flannel bottom find them TTS? I loved this dress and with 1/2 off $90?? Someone was looking for sz 0 and it is online--go get it! Was it JEFF oh and someone else on the weekly exchange!!??

    ReplyDelete
  51. is the sale section acting weird for anyone else? One time I go and it says there are 28 sale accessories, and then the next time I go, it says there's only 5, and then the next time I refresh, it says 28 again. (I keep going back b/c my kids keep interrupting me)

    ReplyDelete
  52. ffm
they have the serengetti juliets at lenox square atlanta. don't think they are on sale though. also, just an fyi these run 1/2 size larger than the solid juliets (i have these and the black in half size smaller)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Laura - I have the strapless abstract floral dress, and I think it's very TTS. I take a 10 in any dress or skirt that has a straight bottom, and the 10 in the strapless dress fits me perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thank you anon@11:18! Would you suggest a 9.5 instead of a 10?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Christina-thank you that was meant for Covert5-I appreciate the feedback!

ANON 11:18 I wanted to clarify for FFM and others--my understanding is that the Juliet in Serengeti runs 1/2 size SMALLER than the regular Juliets in solid colors. i have spoken to others about this..i think that IS what you are saying but it is not totally clear.
I was wondering if anyone has the peeptoe version of serengeti heels with narrower heel and wondering about fit for his one?? It is on sale $149 and 1/2 off.

    ReplyDelete
  56. ^ Not the slingback but the regular shoe with peeptoe

    ReplyDelete
  57. Covert5: So then I should look for a 10 in the Safari Juliet Midheels, and not a 9.5, correct?

    ReplyDelete
  58. You probably all know this already, but, if there is something on special (example, wool gabardine dress for $125.00) but not actually in the sale section, they will take the 30% off if you call customer service. I just got that dress and two pairs of the Watson pants for work. VERY excited!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anon at 9:26 ... I have the ivory elizabeth halter, never work still with tags, in a size small.

email me if you'd like it!

    ReplyDelete
  60. FFM: I had the Serengeti Juliets in a 9 and had to exchange them for a 9.5. I am still waiting to get them but I found the 9's to be too snug all around. I think in a different post a while ago someone else found that the Serengetis were running a half size small too. I hope you aren't totally confused now by the differing opinions! It is really frustrating with J Crew shoe sizing because in the ballet flats, I find that the 9.5's are more comfortable than my usual 9 and then in the Lucia high heel sandals, the 9's fit perfect. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  61. FFM-YES--that's the overwhelming majority of feedback I have read.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thank you elena m and covert5!!! I will try for the 10 and hope they work out. Does anyone know if they are on sale? The Serengeti Midheels are, but I haven't seen any info on the Juliets...anyone know for sure?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I hope I can get some help with 2 items:

1.) The Berry Astrid Jacket is a boxy jacket. I wear between a 4 and 6 in a jacket. I find that size 4s generally fit tight in the shoulders but okay in the torso. The 6s fit perfect in the shoulders and loose in the torso. What size you would recommend I get in the Berry Astrid Jacket?

2.) Does anyone know what the sale selection is like in any of the 3 Seattle J Crew Stores?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Does anyone know what happened to the Merino Lili ruffle cardi online in the new arrivals section? It was there last nite but could it be that it sold out? Thats really odd that something as simple as a merino cardi will sell out this quickly...

    ReplyDelete
  65. FOR REFERENCE-
The Serengeti Peep Toe Heels I am referring to and wondering about size in July 2008 book on page 45. They appeared to be J Crew.com only but a store Alexis named (CT) has them and I thought they looked very cute on the models throughout that catalog--good price on sale $74.50 from $195!

Also, the Penelope Mary Janes are $129.99 (they will match the online price) minus 50%=$64.99 and Juliets except black are $79.99-50%=$40!!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Uh, just called Greenwich (thanks to Alexis) and they "don't ship sale items". I "should just go online" and order what I want. Huh? This has never happened to me before! I told them this (all three of the SAs they had me talk to), so they are looking for my items "this one time, as a favor."

    We'll see what they find...

Has anyone else had this issue??

    ReplyDelete
  67. I may stop in my store to check out the mark-downs, but I don't think I'll be inspired enough by the new stuff to pay full price.

    ReplyDelete
  68. FFM-Serengeti Midheel my understanding is they are not on sale

    ReplyDelete
  69. Update: Greenwich found one of the two items I was looking for and is shipping to me. Thank goodness they were willing to do me that kind FAVOR!

Oh well, I'm just happy I got the art deco tank for $50!

  70. I have the serengeti peep toe in 7 1/2 and usually I am an 8 in j crew shoes-- got the juliet heels in an 8 and same with the lulu heels-- on the other hand I have the patent leather peep's in a 7 1/2 -hope that helps. the greenwich location ad a few of the serengeti peep toes left on sale

  71. I know this has been discussed to death, but I can't remember... will CS still price-match store prices? Or do I have to be calling from a red phone?

    ReplyDelete
  72. OT: Does anyone have a promo code for GAP besides the Extra25?

    ReplyDelete
  73. I liked the simone jacket (blue one). It's clearly stated that it's a boiled wool, not knitted. I found it true to size and it's very warm, lightweight and not scratchy. If you like boiled wool jackets it's definitely worth a look. The buttons on these are the same as the lea cardigans, except bigger.

I have the abstract floral black flannel dress and it's TTS. I love it and want to get the golden roses version as well someday when it goes on sale.

I ran into the shipping with sales items on the red phone issue. I ordered both a regular and a sale price item over the red phone and normally it's free shipping, but this time it's not. It seems to not to be a hard and set policy so make sure you know the shipping price before you hang up!

    ReplyDelete
  74. For some time now, the policy has been that you will be charged shipping if you order a sale item, whether or not you order a full-priced item as well. This policy has been in effect since late summer, I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Does anyone know if the black Juliet midheels are on sale anywhere yet? I know peacock and buttercup (but not black) are marked down, at my normal store. I keep waiting and hoping they'll go on sale but I don't want to miss out. (I'm in LA). Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  76. ffm- i am the anon that told about juliet sizing- i was offline for awhile, sorry! to reiterate- i would definitely order a half size larger than your usual jcrew size in the sereg. juliet. i bought the black and sereg. in size 10. the black was falling off while the serengeti fit ! i had to reorder the black in 9.5. hth. they are really cute btw. and comfy (heelwise)re: sale- i have only seen the brightly colored ones on sale in store (lenox). i bought both mine with 20% private sale back in september. i want to get the almond or brown color, too! can you have too many of the same style shoe??

    ReplyDelete
  77. fabulousfloridamommy: I tried to combine coupons at gap.com yesterday, and it does not allow it. Since the other coupon was for 15% off, it applied the better discount of 25%. I was able to use my free shipping coupon as a luxe cardholder.

  80. RE: problem with shoes making squishing noises

I had a problem with a pair of flats that made squeaky noises -- they were brand new out of the box. I was advised to use baby powder, sprinkle inside the shoes and dust it around. Voila! Stopped the squeaking. Don't know if it will work on every shoe but it has worked for me. Worth a try.

She just got me several items 1/2 off through catalog--Penelope Mary Jane, Fleur Peeptoe heel, 2 Hip slung jeans and wild berry Jackie all for $273 including tax and S/H!! That's almost the price of one Fleur pair of shoes (not that the retail price isn't absurd!)Thanks!!

  95. Julie, they were $49.99 or $59.99 with an extra 50% off at my B and M in Orlando. 407-226-9732 I'm pretty sure they were the lower price but can't remember for sure.

  97. Hi ladies and gents, I visited the Michigan Avenue Chicago store (love the sales reps there BTW) and the sale stuff is unremarkable. Lots and lots of pumpkin-colored cords and the muted-orange Astrid suiting trousers.

In store promotion, though, working checking out- Sherpa Fleece Hoodie, $49.50.

  98. Question for all you JCAs...didn't the skinny patent leather belt come in peacock at one time? I swear I saw it in multiple stores but never bought it. Now I really want it and it's sold out online and in my store. I tried doing a "we'll-find-it" but CS says they can't do it because the color doesn't come up in her computer (nor do the olive green or other colors I know it came in). So, my questions are:

*Did this belt really exist in peacock or am I crazy?

*If it did and you see one at your B&M in a small or medium, can you let me know??

    Thanks!

  99. Does anyone know if the buttercup Juliets will pair well with the double serge pencil skirt in the bronzed ochre? I'm thinking the buttercup might be too bright but I'm not sure. Also, does the buttercup work with any of the honey glaze pieces. I have a ton of honey glaze.

  100. You're not crazy! A friend gave me the skinny patent leather belt in peacock for my birthday last week... Not sure how long ago she bought it though.

  101. Smarty - Not sure which belt you are looking for. But I saw the "metallic foil skiing belt" in bright tide, which looks turquoise (to me) in the catalog. Item #11107T. Hope this helps and is the item you are looking for. If it is I saw some last week at the j Crew Scottsdale Kierland location.

Go for it--the buttercup is not exact honey glaze but it does work. They show shades of it or vice versa the honey glaze shoe with the yellows and acorn etc. all over the place in the catalog. Great pop of color with more outfits than u think-very versatile! Just have to be a bit adventurous and they will be fun--esp. for $40!!

Peacock belt--is not figment of your imagination. Just gone. It is in the catalog that has the girl wearing the clea metallic skirt, serengeti tank and grey cardi on front (no date on this one)p. 61. It's a eraly to mid Fall catalog

  111. I hit up my local B&M this afternoon. Wow...did I make out like a bandit. Sale was awesome...got tons of Holiday shopping done. I got my husband fleece lined zip hoodies for 25 bucks, scarfs, and a few cute small leather goods and jewelery as gifts for friends...I picked up a pair of the high heel flare jeans for 15 bucks!!! (I have two pairs and love them). I got 600 dollars worth of stuff marked down to 269 and then with the 50% off sale, I got it all for 136 dollars!!! WOW!!! I also recieved the new catalogue and my favorite sales associate helped me order the new Tissue Sequin Tank in black and the Wool Jersey Satin Trim Tank in Dark Fog. I will post reviews of these items. The SA who helped me recommended that I order a size down because they run big.

    6. I too wear between a 4 and 6 for J Crew coats. Since I had bought the velvet blazers this year in a 6, I went w/the 6. I found the 6 in the Astrid to be too big in the chest/torso. I called J Crew customer service to get one online. They aren't on sale online, but they will price match the stores if you give them the #/name of the store where they are on sale. I ended up getting the size 4 for $93 (inc tax). It won't ship until 11/24th, because it is backordered. I am not returning the 6 until I decide which fits better. I may have to take the 6 in for alterations if the 4 is too snug. It is an awesome jacket. Hope that helps.

  116. Hi again,

I’m writing on a few threads today so please bear with me. I just picked up a few items @ %30 off online. I got a good deal, but I’m also interested to see what’s available at a B&M.

Mostly I’d like to see if anything is on the %50 sale rack as fellow aficionada’s have mentioned. Also hoping I can find some of the outwear in stock so I can get a feel for the pieces. I would really like to see any & all styles in the wool double cloth. I bought a Tulip coat last week (30% off seemed like a good deal – who knew hey would have an additional price break?) that I need to return. The coat fits well… I’m just not into the sleeve details. So, I’m hoping to get a Lady Day & would like to see the colour options. It’s a little easier to look for myself instead of getting tangled in one of those “Is it a blue- red or orange-red” conversations with the folks on the phone. That said, I spoke with a very helpful associate who gave me some measurements for comparisons. Hope they might prove useful to y’all:

    # 9795 Tulip P6
    Bust 37 Waist 33.5 Low hip 40.5
    Shoulders 14.75 across
Sleeve 30.62 center back to cuff

    #79205 Lady Day P6
    Bust 36.75 Low hip 40.5
    Shoulders 14.75 across
Sleeve 30.62 center back to cuff

    Reg6
    Bust 37 Low hip 42.5
    Shoulders 15.75 across
Sleeve 32 center back to cuff

    P8
    Bust 37.75 Low hip 42.5
    Shoulders 15.5 across
Sleeve 30.62 center back to cuff

    #96915 Plaza P6
    Bust 37 Waist 35 Low hip 42
    Shoulders 15.25 across
Sleeve 30.62 center back to cuff

I went & bought the Plaza in Camel as it seemed a good neutral. I plan on buying the Lady Day in Dark Poppy if it’s a good clear red & have Chocolate as my safety choice. Anyone have either the brown or red? Most of my clothes are pretty conservative colours; greys, blues, maroon, & dark green. I’m hoping the coat will make a good signature piece without going too far out of my comfort zone. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Heather:D

  119. Hi again, again,

Ummmm I'm not sure if this helps, but I found the Lilli cardigan for Anon 11:54. If you search the site for merino & select the women's section it pops up. Also found it by searching for #10567. I know, that's a rather weird # for a ladies sweater. However, it works (for now) hopefully you'll be able to access the page. I often find stuff by playing around with a variety of key words in the search field. I'm sure that the tech folks have an explaination as to why things can be found there & not elsewhere. I'm just happy to find whatever I'm looking for :)

    Hope that helps,

Some of the sale items I wanted were not there (I need petites!) so I picked up the red phone.... BUT the CS rep said they would NOT honor the 50% off! I have been reading this blog a lot, and I thought they would honor additional markdown if I caleed from the red phone. Is this happening to other people?!

  135. In response to the Q about NoVa B&Ms - I stopped by the Tyson's store last night but wasn't overly impressed, the sale section was pretty picked over. There were a some matchstick cords, some Penelopes and buttercup Juliet midheels, a good selection of accessories/socks/headbands, a few wool fionas, but that was about it. I got a sweater for the boy, some socks, and a pair of the Lulu peep-toes in burnt sienna for my sister (they were out of my size unfortunately).

    ReplyDelete
  136. Christina - I saw buttercup yellow midheels in San Fran. I think they were $69.99 + 50%. That was yesterday. Serengeti midheels are not on sale.

Laura - I don't know what to do about squishy shoes. That drives me nuts. I'm sure if you Google info, there is a solution.

caliglam - Still haven't seen the Ivory boucle Penny in stores. I was in WC today and they didn't see it either. I tried on the 2 and 4. I was kicking myself for not having ordered a 2. I can fit a 2 and it looked great buttoned up, etc... and looked like a blazer. The 4 also look great but created a little more of a jacket look, which is what I wanted. I'm happy I got a 4. Will post when I get it next week.

  137. Re: price-matching via red phone...

My sister went into her store today (one of the ones in southern CA) and ordered the Juliet midheels in peacock for me, via the red phone (after calling around, I could only find my size in one store, and they said they wouldn't be able to charge and send them over the phone??). The rep she spoke to told her that they are allowed to price match the store's sale price, but that they are NOT authorized to give the additional store discount (50%, in this case). He fought her on it, but when she continually reminded him that she had been told by more than one sales rep (both in the store, and on the phone) that they WOULD give her the extra 50%, he agreed to do it. He told her repeatedly that they are NOT allowed to give the additional store discount, and while there is still some confusion among reps, it will not be something they'll continue to do in the future. So, it seems like if you get the right customer service rep, they will give you the additional store discount - but probably not for much longer.

This seems more than a little ridiculous to me... given the INSANE price discrepancy between store and website (the shoes are still $198 online, but only $39.99 in store) it seems unreasonable that they wouldn't honor the store price (given that they still have ALL SIZES and ALL COLORS in stock online)... hopefully they'll rethink this policy in the future!

  139. I just came from the Georgetown, DC B&M tonight, and in the final sale, they had a lot of the sketchbook skirts in a variety of sizes, the Astrid jackets (wool twill in camel, wool herringbone in black, the red floral with ruffles), a lot of cashmere femme sweaters (in a lot of colors and sizes), a few Lydia's (mostly in L and red), high heel flares (in a lot of different sizes), trouser jeans (a lot of sizes too), and a variety of shoes (Lulu peeptoes in honey glaze and burnt sienna, sizes 6 1/2 and 71/2 mostly - 129.99) , Penelope flats (79.99 I think), one pair of tweed ballets (not sure if they were the Luxe ones as on the website and in size 9, I think, Long Beckett leather high heel boots in brown and black in 229.99 I think), the different pins (faux quartz star, jet star, clear sun for 29.99). The prices are still not including the 50% off. There were also a lot of charcoal wool Fionas and two or three sweet potato ones.

On promotion were the merino Lea cardigans (69.50 as on the site), tissue turtlenecks (29.50), merino turtlenecks (59.50 as on the site), different Academy pants (99.00).

  141. Hi JCAs - Just want to thank you for the info on the peacock skinny belt...it was my lucky day! I went into my B&M and they had about ten of them in that color, despite being sold out previously! Yippee! I do appreciate all the replies, though, about your own local stores that had them.

As for sale stuff in my store (San Diego), not too much. They did have two dream silvie dresses, both gray, one S and one L. Marked down to $50 with the 50% off. They also had one abstract watercolor dress (black on bottom, atlantic print on top) that I think was a size 6. Other than that, just the same stuff everyone else has been seeing.

  142. Re: Price Matching over the red phone - I find that if you ask the store associate to request a match for you, the CS rep is more willing to do so. Every time I've done that they've honored the store promo.

Has anyone been to the J.Crew in El Segundo or Brea, CA? South Coast Plaza has a very very limited number of sale items (mostly accessories). However, I was lucky enough to score the juliet heels in peacock for $40

  143. Does anyone know how the Lulu peeptoes run? I am usually a 7 or 7.5 in JC shoes...

  144. Green_dino: Just went to the El Segundo Store today. Lots of sales items, but not a lot new items added. Went to the Brea one on Tuesday. They have better selection, but I didn't find new items. I did pick up one of the last Tartine sweater for my mom for $35. What are you looking for?

Smarty - I went for the Lulu in 7.5, which is more or less TTS for me as it's comfortable but it doesn't slip off my feet. I have to do a 7 in the Fleur shoes.

So is the Juliet heels in Blanched Almond on sale at retail too?

  145. Anon @ 11:20 - Thank you for the info. The funny thing is that I am not really looking for anything in particular but the 50% off is just way too tempting!! Did you see any skirts?

  147. I did not have a good experience calling the Orlando store. They refused to place a red phone order for me. Doesn't seem like their service is very consistent.

I called another store that I've had good service in and not only were they tremendously accomodating about placing the order, I got the extra 50% off on all sale items regardless of whether they ended in .99 or .50, plus free shipping on the catalog order, plus free shipping on the sale items coming from the store. It was a fantastic experience and I am so excited about the stuff I found that I thought I had no chance of ever finding, let alone at these prices.

Definitely use a keyword or the item number to search and you can find and order lots more stuff on sale from the website. I got some pants that I haven't seen on the site since last May!

    ReplyDelete
  148. Anon @ 12:24 AM - Do you mind if I ask what store you called?

  149. Green_dino: I saw 2 abstract rose print skirts at the El Segundo store, and a few of the cord skirts. I seem to remember a couple of the belle cotton skirts too, but their best selection are for the tops and jackets. They also have 2 leopard print tartine sweaters, and tons of the wool fiona and velvet ecoles.

There are a few dream tie cardigans at the Brea store, and a lot of the matchstick cords in very bright colors. Tons of the cuffed chino pants in khakis.

I generally check out the Anthropologie and M. Federic stores at the El Segundo Plaza during the shopping run (and then hit the veggie grill closeby for sweet potato fries for lunch).

I called the Pasadena store and found out that almond is full price, but if anyone cares, they have the yellow juliet in 7.5. I have too many yellows, and was tempted by the peacock.

  157. iheartjcrew -

Sounds like you were lucky. That is not how they are supposed to apply stacked discounts. % off are not additive, they are multiplicative. Each discount comes off of the result of the previous, not off of the starting price.

    Example: $100 * 50% off = $50
    Extra 15% off of $50 = $7.50
    Final price: $42.50 (a 57.5% discount).

    ReplyDelete
  165. green_dino: forgot to mention, the El Segundo store also have a lot of the tuxedo sweatpants in ivory, and 3 in grey (medium only).

What goes with the peacock colored shoes (juliet or flat)?

Well, J Crew stays in business because despite the varying practices, if you know what to look for, you can get quite a bargain on stuff. Plus I think their style is unique without going overboard. I like anthropologie for instance, but not many of their stuff is really wearable for work, and Ann Taylor/Talbots is too matronly.

  166. I just visited the farthest of my local stores (the Somerset Collection store in Troy, MI), and they have TONS on sale. A few abstract rose skirts, lots of belle skirts (only a couple in grey, size 4), lots of cord pencil skirts (grey and the brighter pink), the cashmere femme sweater in navy and heathered plum ($119.99), cashmere long-sleeve tee in a bright lime green, all/most sizes of tartine cardigans (light pewter, yellow, a medium shade of coral-pink), herringbone fiona in the dark grey or acorn kind of color, velvet ecoles (can't remember the color selection), penelope and salina flats (mostly 7s and 7.5s), a few rollneck silk dresses and dream silvie dresses, tons of pants and jeans... also lots of mens stuff, though I didn't really go through it all. 168. If this is just a small rep. of JCrew customers then imagine all the problem orders that go on that we don't hear about...

I see lots of positive experiences on this blog as well as negative but when negative things do happen JCrew seems to really mess up royally.

I have shopped exclusively online for 15 years b/c I live in a small town. I have had more problems in the 7 years I have shopped with JCrew than any other company...and I do A LOT of online shopping!

  169. Quick question- I've found a pair of Juliet heels in my size in the color I want. The store was busy, but is gonna call me back re: shipping.

My question is I already have a pair which I have worn. I was going to return the new pair with my old receipt and pocket the difference. They're not going to mark the new shoes in some way which would preclude me from returning them are they?!

Oh, also after wearing the shoes for a day the squishiness mostly abated.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Laura, there is no way for them to tell. I have done this many times with items I have purchased at full price or close to full price and then re-buy and return with the old receipt.

I don't care if they think it's wrong. In the end, I get the same items and save some money.

    ReplyDelete
  171. ok, good. I just called another store and ordered them for $50 including shipping. I've done it before with clothes, and wouldn't do it with shoes I've worn, but if I can save $150 then I will!

  175. I think that people buying and returning when stuff goes on sale is a big reason that J. Crew instituted the 60 day return limit a few years ago.

Also, I don't think they need to read this blog to spot stuff like this. They are a multi-channel retailer. They do database marketing and so know a LOT about their customers. I am sure they track the redemption of coupon codes, etc. and if the usage of a coupon is such that they don't get the expected promotional return, they know to yank that coupon or vary the terms, etc.

There is software that can help retailers track excessive or abusive return patterns. I have no idea if J. Crew has any kind of return tracking system, but I am sure if it becomes a problem for their business, they will figure out a way to address it. Some stores flag abusive returners and won't let them return anything.

    ReplyDelete
  176. I am sure that they have a tracking system most retailers do.

This blog has had many comments from JC staff so they read this blog.

  177. I am sure that Laura is not an abusive returner.

And with the holidays coming up, there are bound to be returns from people buying gifts that the didn't give because they found something better to people returning gifts they did not like.

If you have a receipt, the store can not deny you a return.

And I am big J.Crew shopper. I have spent a lot of money on my J.Crew card.

    ReplyDelete
  178. And 60 days is a big window to return things. By that time, most of the items have gone on sale.

They do have a price adjustment policy, but it is only within 7 days and the item has to have been purchased at full price.

So why not get a deal if you can?

If you buy an item at full price and then love it and later find it on sale for almost 60% off, that is huge savings.

  182. 60 days is a wide window, if J Crew notices alot of returns after an item goes on sale the return policy will be less liberal. Remember abuse was the reason way JC changed their policy about stacking discounts for educators.(Not saying educators were abusing discounts).

    ReplyDelete
  183. Hi, I'm anon 6:22 pm.

Just wanted to clarify that I did not say that Laura or anyone else was an abusive returner - J. Crew can set its own standards for what is acceptable.

I am sure J. Crew does read this blog - most companies keep an eye on internet commentary about themselves, but they don't need this blog to spot patterns in returns and promotion redemption. I am sure they have extremely sophisticated software to track whatever they want. Direct mailers have been tracking the "lift" in sales that they get after a mailing for ages - this kind of stuff has only gotten more sophisticated.

When an individual spots any kind of loophole in a policy or promotion, and the use of that loophole starts to affect J. Crew's profits, you had better believe that they will take action to close it. We are seeing this now, aren't we, in the tightening up of what used to be pretty liberal return/adjustment/promotion policies.

I will post again with some info about return tracking software.

If you have a receipt, the store can not deny you a return.

Not sure what gives you this impression, but this is not true.

  184. I once researched a job with a company that made software for retailers and I was amazed at the kind of stuff they could do. Here is an excerpt the website of a company that makes return tracking software. I know nothing about the company and I know nothing about what J. Crew uses, but I want to point out that this issue is a big problem for retailers.

Posting to educate and because I think this topic is interesting.

    **************

Why is the Verify-1 Technology Important?
The retail industry is currently experiencing a significant fraud and abuse problem. Retailers are losing more than $15.5 billion/year due to return fraud/abuse.

Verify-1 is designed to identify the one percent of consumers whose behaviors mimic return fraud or abuse. Without this system, retailers are forced to create stricter policies such as “no receipt, no return,” or raise prices for consumers to offset the losses incurred from fraudulent returns. With TRE’s technology, retailers can extend more liberal return policies while still taking a proactive approach to curbing the problem.

    How Does the System Work?
When a consumer wants to make a return, a retailer will swipe the individual’s driver’s license or government-issued ID card to make an identification of the person and his/her unique return behavior. As customers return merchandise, the system compares variables such as return frequency, dollar amounts and/or time against a set of prescribed rules that form that particular retailer’s return policy.

Why is the System Important for Retailers?
Verify-1 optimizes net sales, and reduces the return rate and shrink.

A certain percentage of returned merchandise must be discounted or discarded in order to sell it. For example, out-of-season clothing may go directly to the sale rack after being returned, while returned lingerie apparel may be discarded for health reasons. The retailer also loses restocking time, which is time an associate could be spending with a consumer on a new sale.

By reducing fraud and abuse, retailers will also be able to reduce internal employee theft and shoplifting.

What are the Reasons Why a Consumer Would be Denied a Return?
...Refused returns generally fall into two categories. First, returns that break the retailer’s basic return policy, such as a return without a receipt, a return after the allowed return period, or multiple returns beyond the quantity of returns allowed by the retailer within a given period. Second, returns that make your overall return behavior indicate return fraud or abuse.

What are Some Examples of the Return Fraud and Abuse Problems?
    • Wardrobing or renting: Buying merchandise for short-term use with intent to return, such as video cameras for weddings, big-screen TVs for a SuperBowl game or a dress for a special occasion
    • Employee fraud: Returning stolen goods assisted by employees for full retail price
    • Receipt fraud: Using falsified, stolen, or reused receipts to return merchandise
    • Returning stolen merchandise: Shoplifting with intent to return for full retail price
    • Price switching: Putting lower priced tags on merchandise with intent to return for full retail price
    • Price arbitrage: Buying differently priced, similar-looking items and returning the cheaper one as the expensive item

What Factors Does Verify-1 Use to Determine if a Retailer Should Accept a Customer’s Return?
This varies from retailer to retailer. The factors that Verify-1 may use for a given retailer include:

    The frequency of your returns
    Return dollar amounts
Whether your return is receipted or non-receipted

Isn’t Making a Return or Exchange a Right to Which Consumers are Entitled?
No, returning merchandise is a privilege granted by each retailer to its customers, and it differs according to each retailer’s approach to the market. Depending on state law, retailers are required to post their return policies, but they are not required to accept merchandise returns.

If a Consumer’s Return is Denied, Does That Mean He or She is Committing Fraud?
The vast majority of consumers are neither fraudulent nor abusive. Being denied a return does not imply that the consumer has committed fraud or is habitually abusive; it merely means that the consumer has requested what that specific retailer considers excessive returns.

If a Consumer’s Return is Denied, Does that Mean He/She is “Blacklisted” From Making Future Returns?
Verify-1 does not blacklist consumers in the sense that they are prohibited from ever making returns at all retailers. The system may prevent a consumer from returning for a period of time at a particular retailer, but if that consumer reduces his or her return activity the system then allows the consumer to make returns at that retailer.

Some retailers have lists of consumers who have abused the retailer’s return policies or committed fraud. If a retailer does not wish to do business with a consumer that the retailer has identified as abusive or fraudulent, TRE will help the retailer, at its request, to implement its policy by denying returns by that consumer at that retailer.

What Constitutes Fraud? What Constitutes Abuse?
In general, return fraud involves stealing or forgery. For example, a person might return stolen merchandise to make money; steal or falsify receipts to enable excessive returns; or use merchandise returns to convert bad checks to cash.

Abuse occurs when a person purchases merchandise without intending to keep it. An example of abuse is renting (also known as “wardrobing” when it involved clothing). Renting occurs when someone purchases merchandise without intending to keep it, uses the item and then returns it.

  185. I am definitely not an abusive returner. I bought something legitimately for, what, 75% off regular price? I bought it at the prices they instituted. And with it being final sale, I take the chance on not being able to return it. I would never return shoes or clothes that had been worn, but me buying something because I'm afraid my size will sell out, not wearing it/using it until it goes on sale then exchanging it is not cheating the system, IMO. And, people have been doing this for years! J Crew isn't gonna suddenly realize it because I post a question on a blog. If they don't place all items in the stores (my B&M never had these shoes) then many people have to buy something to try on before buying. And with their stupid constant Final sales, you often have to buy full price so you can have the option to return if you need to.

  187. J.Crew employees:

Before tracking the return abusers, please please please improve the basic operation so that customers don't have to feel frustration about their orders. There are many customers who placed preorders but could not receive Cascading flowers bouclé Astrid jackets. Before implementing "sophisticated software", J.Crew should offer sophisticated customers service.

How do you feel if you placed a preorder, looking for it for weeks, and ended up that item are sold out? Very frustrated, right?

How does CEO feel about the fact that customers who buy collection items are treated very badly?

  189. Hi all,

Well, I managed to acquire 2 new coats w. the 30% off. However, it was a challenge. Due to a visit to the inlaws, I found myself near a B&M. Also, I had thought ahead & brought along the Tulip in P6 that I wanted to refund / replace. Thanks to pleading w. hubby, I managed to get into the Palo Alto JCrew about 15min before they closed. Spent some time with the bright young man at the counter processing the returns. Mentioned that I would like to replace the coat with something similar. Tried on the Madeline for DH's review. Of course, no petite. So, I took a size 4 & explained that he would have to trust that the petite would fit properly. Unfortunately, no Lady Day to try. Also unfortunately, it was now a few minutes after closing time. I could see that everyone was hoping to balance their registers & head home. I asked the associates if I should use the red phone for my order or if doing it from home would suffice. They said calling in should be ok. When I asked about the shipping, she mentioned the free ship code that I knew about from this blog. Needless to say, I called as soon as I got back to my computer & landline. Also no surprise - there were problems.

Apparently, the extra 30% had expired on my drive home. Also, they were reluctant to honor the free shipping. I had to ask to speak to a supervisor more than once & became most insistent about the shipping.

In the end, after a few "This is a one - time courtesy" warnings, I came away with the promise of my coats. I have on order a petite Black Madeline (I almost bought a blue one a la Madeline the schoolgirl) & a petite Poppy Lady Day for less than $400. Not bad when it would have cost more than $650 at full price. All the homework & patience has it's reward.

I agree with fellow Aficionada's that JC is less flexible about their discounts & shipping courtesies. It's ironic since they need their customer's loyalty now more than ever. I'm esp. sad about the loss of the red phone free shipping for special sizes. Really makes me feel undervalued.

Ironically, the CS who helped me said that she is a petite as well. She agreed that it was nice that JCrew offers petites, but frustrating that one cannot try them on in the store. In fact, it's one of the reasons why I find myself making returns. I have to buy before I can even try it on. I would find it very frustrating to be considered a problem customer for frequent returns considering they don't stock my size!

    Ah well, at least I have two new coats that will last me for quite some time. So, thank you jcrew for the beautiful coats. Sorry if I cause trouble. Hopefully we're both worth it :}

    Good Luck fellow seekers!

    Heather:D

  190. anon 8:04 I enjoyed reading your comment. This could be reason why J Crew prices are so high that people often complain about, or receive holes in sweaters that have been returned.

Laura no one said you are a abusive returner.

  191. Why do people on this blog expect to get something for next to nothing, they think it is their right that is just absurd! Complain Complain this blog is getting ridiculous no wonder so many people left this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  192. I don't expect to get something for nothing. But if I place a presale order for a $425 jacket JCrew should fill the order without me having to call two times and send 3 emails...before anything is even done!

    ReplyDelete
  193. J.Crew does not use this Verify-1 Technology. The only company that uses this is Express. They are the only company that I know that asks/swipes your driver's license at point of return.

And I don't see how anyone can be denied a return at J.Crew. Their business practices are terrible.

First of all, not everyone lives near an actual physical standing store. Therefore, if they want to try anything on, they must purchase it online with the peace of mind in knowing that they can return what does not work.

J.Crew can not consider this abusive if the customer lives HOURS away from the closest store. That would be ridiculous.

And with the holidays around the corner, everyone in line at a store the day after Christmas would be considered an abusive returner. I know that I return many gifts the day after Christmas because I buy things that were not given out.

I may see something at one place I like for my boyfriend, sister, brother, mother, father, and then see something else I like for them. So something has to go back.

Also, I have returned items to J.Crew that I have considered defective. Items that fell apart after a first wash or first wear. That is just unacceptable, especially since the incident that I have in mind was with a Collection piece. These are higher price point goods that should be expected to withstand some normal wear. After all, I did pay much more for them.

Also, I believe that J.Crew recognizes good customers and if they have a return without a receipt or past the 60 days, they will try to help the customer as much as they can.

I am a silver card holder and am greeted by all the store associates at my J.Crew store by a first name basis. They ask about my life, friends, and family. They know I am big spender and make sure that I am happy and taken care of when I go into the store.

This is not just at J.Crew, but most upscale retailers. They know that they need to make accommodations and exceptions for their best and most valuable (the ones that spend a lot of money) customers.

With that said, I can safely say that no one here is an abusive returner. I have had this discussion with my personal shopper before. He told me what J.Crew looks out for and the kinds of people that are on this "DO NOT RETURN" list.

    ReplyDelete
  194. My store is pretty limited with shoes; has anyone noticed a bunch (or even a few) of 8.5 heels at a specific location? TIA

    ReplyDelete
  195. Once again, no one is accusing anyone of being an abusive returner. Of course there are perfectly valid reasons for a customer to return something.

The article just talks about 1 kind of software - many different companies make many different versions - and it also takes pain to point out that only about 1% of returns get flagged by its system.

The point is that retailers certainly have the capability to track a customer repeatedly buying and returning the same item/size/color at lower prices and IF a given retailer decides that that behavior is hurting its business, it will tighten its policies overall or place limits on the people whose behavior is costing it money. Not saying J. Crew does or will do this, but just pointing out that it could if it wanted.

    J. Crew actually does ask for a driver's license on some returns - not sure, but it may just be returns without a receipt.

  197. JCrew cannot even get their website and ordering process working properly. How could they possibly track and analyze return trends?!

    ReplyDelete
  198. Abusive returners are people who steal items and then try to return them. J.Crew takes IDs in order to check them against a book of repeat offenders who are known shoplifter/returners. Because stores can do basically nothing about shoplifting, even when it is happening right before their eyes, their only recourse is to deny a return for a stolen item.
