Manolo Blahnik Did Not Know About J. Crew Collaboration

There is quote over at the Fashionista (click here to read) about J.Crew's newest collaboration with Manolo Blahnik:
Quote of the Day: Manolo Blahnik Had No Idea He Was Doing a J.Crew Collaboration
By Dhani Mau
February 23, 2012

"I have been approached so many times to do one, but I don’t want to work for a big company where I’ll have to have lots of meetings where I’m told what I can and can’t do. My niece, Kristina, handles that sort of thing for me – it’s just not for me. I was recently contacted by JCrew to do something with them, so I sent them over 45 pairs of shoes, and they announced we were doing a collaboration. I had no idea about it!"

–Manolo Blahnik to Vogue UK on doing high street collaborations. So that’s how J.Crew got Blahnik to do a collaboration–by not telling him. Guess he won’t be attending meetings with Jenna Lyons anytime soon.
Oh my! {giggling to herself} I am sure J.Crew will choose to not address this quote in any press release when they do finally release the "Manolo Blahnik for J.Crew" footwear collection.

Although, could you imagine what the product blurb would read if J.Crew did?!? Something like "...we can't believe this dream collaboration came true, and apparently neither did Manolo Blahnik!" Well, that is pretty lame catalog writing on my part. WellFedFred is much better at this (she is really good), she could come up with something much more clever and funny. (Hint: I would love to see WellFedFred's take on this.) :)

What are your thoughts on the quote from Manolo Blahnik? What would be your product blurb for the "Manolo Blahnik for J.Crew" collection?

Thanks for the update. This was a great Friday funny.

  5. Oh my! Yes, thanks for sharing. Well...this is something..ha.

  6. Wow, that is an incredibly tacky move on JCrew's part.... so funny.

  7. This is funny, but understandable if it's the niece that handles this part of the business. You would think she would keep him informed, just in case.

  8. I am picturing Blahnik strolling down the street when he sees a well-dressed woman with gorgeous shoes. He stops to admire and inquire...she tells him they are manolo Blahnik for J Crew...he is puzzled...and a bit red-faced...he turns and runs home to bury his head...in the sand.....too funny...

  9. Hah! Yeah, that doesn't look too good in print!

In J.Crew's defense, though, it looks like the whole deal was brokered through Manolo Blahnik's USA division. Here's a quote from WWD:

"George Malkemus, president of Manolo Blahnik USA, told Footwear News the collaboration was months in the making and began when J.Crew President Jenna Lyons “fell in love” with Blahnik’s popular BB style."

  10. Thanks, Alexis, too kind!
    Still workin'!

  11. I agree with Rose. It sounds like he and his niece are the ones with the communication problems, not J.Crew.

  12. This is funny but I agree with Rose, JCrew has not to be blamed... I mean someone signed off the deal at Blahniks, is not like they are bragging about it and there is no collaboration. Right?????

  13. I think both sides of this project have communication problems... and some common-sense problems, too, like "shouldn't the lawyers look at the paperwork ?"-"Paperwork? ohhhh...."

    So, catalog copy:

While we look for someone to blame, pair your left foot effortlessly with your right foot In our latest imaginary look for feet. Borrowed - really borrowed - from a legendary Italian boy, um, designer and updated to space-age materials in China, you'll teeter over cobblestones, wobble up and down stairs, trip across fields, in these sky-high delights, puncturing lawns, greens, and decks alike. Face polish: TOES Stockholm.

  15. Manolo sounds like he is not very hands on, which isn't a surprise if he's the creative force and someone else does the business end of it. I'm not crazy about the spikey pumps. They look too high to be comfortable.

  16. I wouldn't wear any of those shoes the models have on. Way too high and thin of a heel. Just not practical, at all. The Mona is bad enough...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ha! Probably explains why the prices are the same as Manolos you'd buy at Neimans or Saks . . .it truly isn't a collaboration!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Those high heels don't look wearable to me at all. Now I know why the models all looked so glum cos they had to stand in them for hour and a half (prompting Coco Rochas to ask them why they aren't smilling in the video that Alexis posted earlier). I for one am not excited about the shoe collab. I just don't see JC churning out quality shoes which are comfy "enough". And at $600 a pair? Pass!

  19. Oh WFF, what pressah. You surely rose to the occasion.

I think the foot is in MB's mouth, personally.

Not that I would ever wear them.. The Valentinas are too high for these feet ;)

  20. That is funny stuff..
As Cass said on another thread, I would never invest in some MBs through JCrew... if I'm forking over that kind of cash, I'll go buy them from a real store.

  21. Ah, that's just Mr. Blahnik's way of keeping his reputation as the absent minded professor of shoe designers. Of course he knew about it but it sounds humorous and charming to say something silly like only his business manager niece was in on it. Not possible. No way this is not signed, sealed and delivered. He's still funny though. Getting tons more press for both himself and J. Crew by pretending it's a huge surprise.

And WFF, your comment made my day :)

  22. Looks like there's a Manolo footprint on both Mickey and Jenna's ass today. Nice going, idiots. Right Hand, I'd like you to meet Left Hand.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Haha, better yet, Left Foot, I'd like you to meet Right Foot.

  24. WFF, awesome! The only thing I'd suggest is some parentheses. (We are obsessed with them!)

  25. WellFedFred: Well done! :) I had a good chuckle this morning- love the parts of "really borrowed" and "puncturing lawns"! Too funny!!! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  26. wellfedfred: Thank you for the laugh this morning! As Alexis said...well done! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. that was amazing. LOL. thanks for this! i've been laughing all morning! :P

  28. My sister is a physical therapist, so I've heard all about what happens to your feet later in life. I'll be enjoying my current collection of 4" heels until they die, but I'm not investing in new ones. Granny shoes are the new stilettos.

  29. Overpriced overhyped ego feeding footwear.

  30. I think it's hilarious that J.Crew thinks they're on par with Neiman's

  31. thank you , ladies! (curtsies) (blushes) (effortlessly).

  32. I love Manolos but I am not looking forward to seeing (potentially) $600 shoes at J Crew!

  33. OT. Is anyone else noticing site troubles.
