J.Crew Email: This week's discovery...

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Irina, who shared the following email J.Crew sent this morning.

The email not only features the Pleated Jardin Skirt in Heart Throb (item 64011; $128.00), but also shares its back story with customers:
Regardless of what the calendar says, we're always in the mood for love. Cue the jardin skirt, featuring a unique interpretation of our favorite symbol, the heart, given such pop culture play over the years by NYC tourism campaigns, Keith Haring, and chocolate-box-giving boyfriends. How was this print developed? Our designer was shopping the stalls at Les Puces de Saint-Ouen, the Paris flea market, and picked up a deck of unusual 19th-century playing cards. Back in the states, our in-house print illustrator used the Queen of Hearts as his muse and sketched out his own iterations- manipulating the scale to make sure they fit just right. This is one creation sure to win hearts.
This skirt is another one of those prints that either customers adore or avoid. I love the length and its fullness. The print is cute, but does it limit its wear-ability?

  1. Not my cup of tea in style or print, but I'm sure there are those on whom it'll look sweet. I think tomorrow is a day that involves hearts, no? I could totally see my littlest niece rocking this if it came in her size.

  2. Am I really the only one who doesn't love the print at all? When I first saw the picture of the shirt/skirt, I thought it was a "pebble" print and never thought of trying them on. Later I saw the shirt in store, not attractive at all..

  3. I like the print but it doesn't wow me. I hate the idea of the shirt (thin, snag-prone clingy silk, ICK) but the skirt is cute and will probably suit someone. Just not me.

  4. Not for me either. I love hearts but something about this print just doesn't do anything for me. Maybe if I saw it in person I would change my mind but thinking not so much....esp. at the price point it just isn't worth price to me in either the skirt or shirt.

Funny: my word verification is kinect. I guess I just don't "connect" with this print.

  5. I'll go against the grain here and say that I really like this print. I love that you can't even tell it's made of hearts until you look closely at it. It's a totally unique print that I plan on wearing into the warmer months. I actually planned on wearing it to school today but ended up staying home sick--will probably wear it Wednesday instead (no school tomorrow--drat! I can't be That Teacher!) I wasn't a fan of the shirt personally, just because I don't like prints on my upper half, but I just adore the skirt.

Alexis, thanks for the link to my review! :)

  6. J.CrewJD: Not sure if you've seen the shirt in person, but it's actually more impressive in person than I thought it would be. The material is thicker than expected and really lovely. I kind of fell in love with the material and fit of the shirt, but again...not a fan of the print on my upper half.

  7. I also like the print. I have the silk blouse (after returning due to snags the 2nd blouse is perfect). I have ordered the skirt to try on but it is on backorder. It is odd that J.Crew is highlighting an item that is backordered with very few sizes available.

  8. I got the shirt and while I loved the print, I detested the fabric.

  9. I never wear full skirts, so the skirt is a no-go for me ... but I want the matching shirt so badly I can't stand it! Too bad the price is outrageous to me.

I am patient and cheap. Someday in a few years someone will tire of it, having realized they wore it only once or twice, and I'll be able to get it for a price I can stomach. And I will be happy indeed. :P

  11. I am not a fan of this either, but great for those who can wear it! :)

  12. Elaine... your method of obtaining coveted items sounds a lot like mine! Love it!

  13. Wanna bet the price plummets after valentines day passes? This skirt is not versatile enough for my taste. Maybe if it was a scarf...

  14. I just don't get all the love for this skirt.

  15. Why do they promo an item they have left on three sizes online?

  16. I actually love love this skirt!! Wish it was a better price!:(

  17. I love this skirt! It is actually very versatile. I was skeptical at first, but when I put on the skirt and twirled around in it (yes, I'm a little girl at heart), I knew it was the perfect skirt to wear all the way through summer. I live in Los Angeles and we like to break the rules on fashion, so I think this is definitely a versatile piece, so rock it!

  18. I am on the fence regarding the print. I have the shirt and I'm undecided on whether to keep it or return. The print is nice and would look great peeking out of a sweater or jacket but the fabric is snag-prone and not great quality IMO so in the end it will likely go back. The skirt is a shape I can never wear so pass on that one.

  19. The print is cute and the full-dress look of the blouse and skirt together is very retro pretty, but I agree that it's not versatile enough.

I did, however, buy the iPhone case from JC in this print, and it cheers me up every time I pull it out of my purse!

  20. After I turned 40 full skirts just look too girlish on me, so I can't wear this skirt. (I can wear A-line a la rigeur.) I like the colors of this print. Red and navy are so pretty together!

  21. I actually really really adore the print BUT I have a hard time imagine wearing all-over hearts outside the V-day timeframe so this is unfortunately a no-go for me. I don't have any fear that JC will come up with something I'll need in my life soon! ;o)

  22. Thanks, Alexis for including a link to my review. I am not in love with the print but I think it's a comfortable well made skirt. The length is a bit awkward for me (5'4") even in the petite. The hearts are a bit too cutesy for me.

  23. I actually like this print, but I like hearts and other girly prints. I'm really disappointed that my store only got the umbrella and phone cover in this print.

Can anyone who owns it tell me where it was imported from? My new years resolution was to not buy anything made in China, so it's making it really hard for me to shop online.

  24. I have this skirt and I love it! I agree the print isn't for everyone, but I personally love prints, and the girly ones at that! :)

I'm with Annette. . .this can be a versatile piece and worn through summer! I live in a warmer climate too (Arizona) so it will serve me well when those temps hit over 100 degrees. If you like the print, don't get hung up on the hearts, and as Annette said, rock it! :)

  25. The print looks a little leopard-ish to me in person. Spots, hearts, spots, hearts, depending on how my eyes focused. Pass for me. Catherine K is right. It should've been made in a scarf.
