J.Crew has a mobile version of their website!
What's this mean? Whenever a customer accesses J.Crew's website on their mobile device, they will be automatically redirected to a mobile template (click here).
What's the big deal about this? It makes navigating J.Crew's site a whole lot easier on the mobile device (like smartphones and tablets). This is because the mobile template has a specially formatted layout suited for small screen sizes.
Why would I even use this? This feature is great for browsing J.Crew's website. It is also handy for looking up any price discrepancies between online and in-stores. There have been one-too-many times a store associate swears an item (that has languished in the sale section online,) is not on sale in the store. I simply look up the item online on my phone to show the associate. For the most part, stores agree to match online prices (which is great!)
Frankly, I do now know why J.Crew took so long to get on board with this move. However, I am really happy that they did.
What are your thoughts on the new mobile version? Have you already tried it out? If so, please share! :)
This is awesome. Make early morning sale stalking easier!
ReplyDeleteI like the zoom feature as well as the swipe feature to see different angles of an item (if they exist). The only thing I haven't noticed yet is how to look at the catalog. Is there an option to do that?
ReplyDeleteGreat news!
ReplyDeleteNow, does this affect an iPad or is it just smartphones?
@JCrewJD -- haha, that's exactly how I found the mobile website! First thing in the morning I do is check my email and visit J Crew for sale section restocks!
ReplyDeleteI'm baffled as to why anyone would want this. I HATE mobile websites/store apps. They never function properly. I prefer to use the regular websites on my phone.
ReplyDeleteAnd this: "automatically redirected to a mobile template" makes me absolutely livid.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was dreaming first thing this morning( yes, I'm one of those addicts that first thing to do when walking up is to check if my stuff pop back up online at J. Crew!!) It's about time they go mobile. So much easier now to browse.
ReplyDeleteI am SO glad that they finally re-vamped for mobile use! It works great on my BlackBerry...I just placed an order with a rewards card over my phone and there were no problems at all.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that is SO much better! I've often needed to check something on the website while at a store and it is a pain to navigate the regular website on a smaller screen. I always end up hitting the wrong thing or having to zoom in as much as possible to make sure I'm hitting the right link. Yay, J.Crew! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with Jeanne - I don't want to be a sourpuss when it come to advances in technology, but for the most part mobile sites - especially for clothing retailers - tend to omit things or obscure them in the name of "usability" - and end up being more difficult to use than the regular site itself. I've used my iPhone in stores to look up items on the website too, and at least for me I'd much rather zoom and and out to find what I'm looking for than risk that it isn't there at all. Maybe it's just that most mobile sites suck (the mobile Allsaints and Banana Republic apps and mobile Google Docs come to mind) - and perhaps this one doesn't. Will just have to wait and see!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Jeanne and ratsonparade. I'm all for mobile sites if they have full functionality, but I've been trained not to expect too much from JC. I don't think it's that hard to use their full site on my phone, but maybe I've just gotten used to it. FYI, once you're automatically directed to the mobile site though, you can click View Full Site at the bottom of the screen.
ReplyDeleteWell, finally, they get with the times on something!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the info. I also want to check in-store vs online prices and hopefully this will work...quickly.
ReplyDeleteOT, new arrivals on the website, including the polka dots dress and and ADORABLE polka dots tunic/cover-up.
ReplyDeleteI am also not a fan of the mobile sites, I always end up using the full site for the reasons that ratsonparade explained. But for the purposes of showing the online prices when in store it should work!
OT, but omg, I love the new "vintage berry" color of the Talitha blouse. I just now got the e-mail about the new arrivals featuring this new color. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteFinally! I am glad they went mobile.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know which shirt the model in the pic for this post is wearing? I've found some that come close but none seems to be the exact one.
ReplyDeleteMary Beth, looks like it is the Merino tatted lace sweater which just went to final sale today. It is another item that just came out...
ReplyDeleteMary Beth - I think it's the Merino Tatted Lace Sweater (item 63052).

ReplyDeleteThanks J.CrewJD and maryeb. I think you are correct. I was looking it for it under tees and knits as the picture was next to the tag line for the promo.
ReplyDeleteThis will be handy in a pinch, like for cross-checking prices and such. But overall I still can't do serious shopping on my phone. It's for dire emergencies, such as extreme popbacks only. Hehehehehehe. Glad to see they're trying, at least.
ReplyDeleteI agree that I don't do major shopping on my iPhone, but it is handy to have this mobile format for those times when I am waiting for my son, and I just want to scroll through some pictures/images. I DO LIKE that you can zoom. Other mobile shopping sites like Kate Spade and Anthro won't let you zoom.
ReplyDelete@ Catherine K: Just pulled up the site on my iPad and it's still in the classic format.
ReplyDeleteYes, as Jackie noted, you can click at the bottom of the screen to go back to the full site, but I wish they'd omit the annoying redirecting and just give the option to click to the mobile site, for those who want it. I find that, even after I click to the full site, most sites will repeatedly redirect back to the mobile site, until I finally give up and go elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteI generally don't like the mobile sites either, BR and Anthro included, but I really like the JC one so far. The search is a million times easier to use since I'm not accidentally hitting my cart anymore. I think it'll be great for price comparisons in store! And the swipe for different views is much better than on the regular site.
ReplyDeleteI am loving the mobile version on my Ipod, I am waiting around to get picked up so this is handy for me. The website was unavailable after 5 min. so there are bugs to be worked out.
