J.Crew is still running their offer for 30% off all sale items (no min) with promo code MUSTHAVE. This offer expires tomorrow, Friday, January 20, 2012.
I have to say that I am pretty excited that there have been several great updates to the Sale section (click here to shop online). This morning, there are 1140+ items for women and 390+ items for men. {Yey!}
Of course there are some benefits & risks associate with buying J.Crew's Sale items.
- PRO: More items to choose from (& greater choice of size & color)
- PRO: If you already know how an item fits, it should be easy to order online without worry
- CON: All sale items are final sale (no returns unless the item is damaged or incorrect)
- CON: Items sell out quickly
- CON: The inventory at J.Crew is still not 100% accurate (so you might get the dreaded cancelled email)
- CON: Prices are {a lot} lower at brick & mortar (B&M) stores. For example, the Honeycomb Cable Sweater (item 54466), is about $20 at the store and about $40 online. But the selection at the stores are limited.
- MEH: The minimum for free shipping is high (yeah, this could have been lowered)
Will you be checking out the Sale section? Are there any items you are hoping to see or to get?
Grabbed a pair of Mona pumps in pale peacock for $98! I had ordered these before Christmas and paid nearly $40 more, so with the exchange and price savings, I picked up a pair of Maddie linen pants in orange from the rave and encouragement of Shop with M's blog! Yay!!
ReplyDeleteThe minimum shipping has hurt me. I've paid shipping twice this week just to pick up an item here and there that has "popped" back up. The Lucca suede sandals showed up in my size in cedar, and a brulee necklace popped up too. Earlier this week I got the selvedge chambray popover and tartan plaid shirt :> very excited for those 2 shirts!
ReplyDeleteI did buy the Booker booties and the tall cafe trouser in wool on final sale. The shoes are similar to tall the other booties I ordered in the past, so I knew there wouldn't be any surprises there. The wool pants I tried in the store in the regular length version.
ReplyDeleteDon't agree with if you have tried an item it is safe to buy. Often on popbacks the item has been worn or is defective or has a stain on it. I have had this happen SO MANY TIMES (b/c I USED TO order a lot) I finally got so sick of all the problems and returns that I no longer even look at final sale. The only thing I would consider safe is a bottle of nail polish! :)
ReplyDeleteI think they'd have done better with a much lower ship min for this one.
ReplyDeleteI did bite this morning, as the Cafe Capri in wool popped back in lots of sizes and colors this morning (cherry yay!). The Silk Pleated Skirt in crimson floral has dropped, fyi (now about $55 with discount). Also the Carriage Coat Dress is on sale, fyi, but sizes are selling fast. I know Dina did a review of it previously, mentioning that it runs big.
(orig)Genny -- I agree that there's a chance you'll get something with an issue like that, but I've never had a problem returning anything remotely defective, even if it's final sale. But that could be b/c I have stores with fab SAs/PSs. I know some stores aren't quite as overly customer-friendly. :)
@em in espana -- Hooray for getting the Maddies -- hope you love them!
ReplyDeleteDuring the post Christmas final sale, I purchased a charcoal hacking jacket, and was told it wouldn't ship until February. Is this common for all Final Sales, that they ship more than four weeks later?
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear so many of you were able to pick up some pieces you missed out on as well.
ReplyDeletePathos: Totally agree on the shipping. It would be better if J.Crew lowered it considerably.
(original) Genny: You are definitely right that customers should check merchandise just in case. We have all experienced receiving an item that should have never been sold online.
ShopWithM: Much like you, I have always been able to return defective merchandise (never an issue which I am grateful for). :)
I have had good results with JC cashmere this year and picked up XS mens and size 14 kids earlier in the season so I knew they fit (I am S or XS in womens). I found 2 kids' cashmere sweatshirts in size 14 and a mens' vneck cashmere in XS -- all came to $70 each, and lovely JC colors of course... (As a side note, the quality of the mens cashmere is great, but some of the kids are 7-gauge and some are 12-gauge, so you have to read the descriptions...)
ReplyDeleteThe scoopneck painter tees have been on promo all week, so they qualified for the extra 30% off. The color I wanted was never available in my size though. Well, today it is but the shirts are now back to regular price! Guess I'm sitting this one out.
ReplyDeleteDamn it. They finally put all colors of the matchstick cords on sale, and I couldn't resist. Got the vintage violet, yay! I have been stalking those, waiting for them to go on sale for months...
ReplyDeleteI also threw in a flair skirt. I am getting tired of being constricted by pencil skirts all day bc at my current job, I am sitting down allll day. I have zero a-lines so for $35, I am willing to try the flair. Even though I kind of hate the 70's buttons. Hopefully they blend right in on the black?
Re: getting defective merch: If you call and say you got defective merch, you can just send it back and they will sometimes credit your card before you even send it, and waive the return shipping fee (obviously). Of course you have to be diligent and make sure they don't "accidentally" charge you the return shipping fee... but to me, this isn't too big of a hassle to prevent me from ordering something I want.
shopwithm,
ReplyDeleteYes, I have been able to return defective items no problem through the mail but it is a hassle I just no longer am willing to deal with in my life. I got so sick and disappointed b/c I ordered a lot and had so many issues. I also would get incorrect sizes and totally different items...It got to the point where I expected at least one item (or more) to be wrong b/c of past experiences. So I decided to stop the madness completely and focus on more important things. I either buy early in the season on sale when things are returnable and most likely to be in good or correct condition:)
I didn't imply it was safe to buy final safe if you tried items in the store. I have had a few surprises with final items too, but once I e-mailed JC, the problem was promptly resolved. They credited me back immediately I reported the problem.
ReplyDeleteOops! I meant to say they credited me back immediately AFTER I reported the problem.
ReplyDelete(orig)Genny -- Ugh, yes, if I had to mail it all back, I would be completely fed up too. What a PITA. I'm just lucky to have a store 5 min from me, so it's not as big of a hassle. If I had to mail it all, I'd be skipping it just like you! :)

ReplyDeleteFree ship minimum is still just too high for me. Paying for shipping insults me and negates my discount, and I will not do it unless I see something I've been pining for.
ReplyDeleteI picked up 3 Crewcuts tees for my son since shipping was free. :)
I mostly stick to buying items that I've already tried, or if not, I phone for measurements and compare to a similar item that I already have.
ReplyDeleteI've had no problems returning the occasional defective or incorrect item either, and J.Crew has always been excellent about issuing a credit promptly, or finding a replacement item for me.
Just noticed the Marceau hobo is back in the sale section. Would be tempted to get this if I could right now, but it appears that it doesn't have an inside zip pocket. That's surprising to me. I mean, it's not a manbag, so why no inside zip pocket?
ReplyDeleteem in espana,
ReplyDeleteMona pumps on sale?! Only leather ones at stores? How about patent and suede ones?! Are these on sale too?!

ReplyDeleteOT, I had 2 emails from JC this morning, one giving me the "privilege" of viewing a rather ordinary, floppy sweater, and one REMINDING me that I had left something in my shopping bag. Well, yes, because JC DOESN'T HAVE A WISH LIST, and I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING ELSE ON FINAL SALE THAT I WOULD EVEN CONSIDER RISKING AND ESPECIALLY WITHOUT FREE SHIPPING, NO WAY. So there. Looks like Dear Leader is getting more amd more like Big Brother. A different view of Dear Leader is here .
ReplyDelete@jo - I ordered then on-line this morning. I'm not sure of the price in store but I'm sure another JCA could let you know.
ReplyDeleteIs anyone aware of 40% off sale being still offered? Thanks so much
ReplyDeleteReferring to b&m stores
DeleteThe Hawaii store has extra 50% off sale. Coats sizes 6 and up.
ReplyDeletezomg extra 50% off sale in store? I would probably pass out right at the threshold! LUCKY!
ReplyDeleteACK. Got a call from J. Crew about the saturday pant popback I rushed out of work to order in-store two days ago. None left. :/
ReplyDeleteJust FYI. I made 3 separate purchases 3 days in a row b/c new items kept coming into the sale section. I called Customer Service and asked if they could offer me any discount on the shipping since I had to pay the $9 each time. The rep was nice enough to waived all the shipping for me. Hope that helps someone.
ReplyDeleteElaine - yes, I'm visiting Oahu and couldn't believe my eyes! As I said, a bunch of coats along with the usual sale offerings; a rather sizeable Men's section with lots of knits. Wondering if they have the same deal at home (Town Square)...
ReplyDeleteI bit this morning...wasn't planning on it but saw the Natasha wildcat blouse was on promotion so picked that up (not final sale) and the glitterati ballet flats in cherry (ALSO not final sale...). There must be some snag on their site because the size 9 is showing up final sale but the 9 1/2 is not final sale...so I decided to go for those too. Final sale items - grabbed the drapey sequin tank in mint and the factory caryn dress.

ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteCan anyone comment on the fit of the double serge hacking? Is fit TTS or size up? I want to be able to layer. Thanks in advance for your input'
Lizzy- I think the verdict on this blog has been to size up, especially with layering. The hacking runs a bit smaller than the schoolboy blazers.
