J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  2. Warning: If you are super excited about the Toothpick jean in garment-dyed twill you might not want to read my review...http://katherinebass.blogspot.com/2012/01/jcrew-case-of-mixed-emotions.html

  3. I have reviews of the No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Waterfloral, the No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Double-Serge Cotton in Warm Jade, and the No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Basket-Weave Tweed in both colors on my blog: http://jcrewismyfavstore.blogspot.com

    Have a great day!

  4. KMSB,
I loved your post. I also was an 8th grade fan of J.Crew and had lots of rugby shirts in my closet!
Those jeans are just pitiful. Does anyone at J.Crew review their merchandise before it's on the retail floor or on-line? They should be embarrassed, especially at a $108 price tag.

  5. I have a few new arrival reviews lined up, including the Paisley wool scarf, Colorblocked stripe long sleeve tee, and the No. 2 pencil skirt in basket weave tweed.

    sub. :)

  6. I also love the look of the toothpick jean in garment-dyed twill but could not bear the thought of paying $108. I tried them on last week and while mine did not have a messed up zipper there was nothing exceptional about them. I ended up finding a pair of kelly green jeans for 20 bucks at Wet Seal that fit great and are 98% cotton. I never really shop there but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of their colored denim. The jeans also come in coral, cobalt, and a bright red.

  7. I have a quick review of the Lattice Peacoat. I was so looking forward to getting this coat. I thought it would be perfect. I loved the fabric, buttons and construction. What I didn't like was the shape. It is very A-lined. Fits good on top, but then flares out. On line they don't show a picture of the coat buttoned up so you wouldn't really know. It is not at all flattering on me. It would have been perfect it it was straighter. For those of you who do like this shape, I did size up as recommended by my ps. I am usually a 0 or 2 in JC jackets, but ordered this in a 4. Sadly I will return it.

  8. I received the Colorblocked Stripe long sleeve tee in cerise yesterday. Mixed results I'm afraid. The colors are wonderful, the fabric is good, but the sizing is ... odd. I ordered a size up (large) so that I can wear a button down or whatever underneath it. Instead of it being too big -- the sleeves were at least an inch and a half too short! I had to check the website to see if they were supposed to be 3/4 length. Nope. Plus, it was a bit too long. I am 5'7" and generally wear a six in bottoms and a 10 in tops (sigh, I'm a bit on the busty side) so I am used to dealing with fit issues. But too short sleeves?! Never.

I believe there were some JCAs that had this problem with the henleys recently. The Henley I ordered fit fine so perhaps this tee is just a goof and if I return it and purchase another? Drat. It is very, very cute and I still want one.

  9. I ordered the Crosstown wool flannel circle skirt (item 56750) during the 30% off promo before the holidays, and posted an IRL pic on my blog here. The quality of this skirt is good- the flannel is very smooth and fine, and the skirt is fully lined. The waistband sits right at the natural waist. I had to go up one size from my regular pencil skirt and pant size to a size 6, and it is quite snug. (FYI, if anyone wishes to see more pics, DaniBP has a review of the skirt on her blog). It is a longer length (27") so for people who are on the shorter side, like myself, heels are a must with this skirt.

My online PS found the Marceau purse for me and I got it a couple weeks ago. I haven't been all that crazy about J. Crew's bag offerings in the past few years, but wow, I am really happy with this bag. I got the warm sienna colour and I love the rich colour. The size is a nice medium size, and I like that I can shorten the strap so that the purse fits under the arm.

  10. Groan, strmywethr, mine is "on vehicle for delivery" and your post has made me very apprehensive! I ordered this early because I was afraid it would go fast. Hah. Will post again after I've tried it on. Actually since there was a whole wall full of variants in this theme at Bloomingdales on Sunday, and I don't like looking like I'm wearing something that was "issued," it may not be a disasaster if I have to send this one back, but I will be irritated. Sigh.

  12. cosmetic bee- that skirt is gorgeous on you! It's now on my radar.

michelle-great review of the jeans and chambray shirt! I'm eyeing that shirt now.

  13. cosmetic bee- one more thing, on the marceau bag, does having to unfold and open the top flap bother you ea. time you need to dig in your bag? it's what's been keeping me from purchasing, so i would love to hear your feedback. :>

  14. Couple of Madewell reviews (Alexis please delete if inappropriate)-
Late night lace tee (item # 58130), which I ordered as an alternative to my JC crochet lace front tee which I really like but which is so short, the XXS fits well through the body but is half way up my back when I sit down which is annoying). So, the Madewell tee is a poly rayon wool jersey blend which I found intriguing- Jersey 70% poly, 30% wool, Lace 95% poly 5% spandex, mesh 100% poly. IRL it has a really nice drape and is not at all itchy. It is sheer with the lace panels but is very pretty and does not seem like it will rip or anything easily, good quality. I got the linen which is ivory. There were 3 colors and it pops back often lately on sale. XS was loosish, about equiv to JC XS and hip length.
Northern Lights Shirtdress (item #52234) a sale popback - I bought this for the print - it is a pretty basic tunic dress and it is very big and loose through the body in the XS, whereas the sleeves hit above my wrist bones, however the silk fabric and the finishing are very nice and I like the sheer sleeves and the print is pretty. With a leather jacket, tights and boots it looks good. Good buy at sale price with extra 30%.

  15. pathos, thanks re: the skirt! About the Marceau purse, the flap opening doesn't bother me but I guess it depends on personal preference. I usually pick top opening hobo bags with no flap, so this is different from my previous bags. I can keep my keys and lipstick in the outer zip pocket on the flap, so I don't have to keep opening and closing the purse. I also really like the compartments inside (2 pockets on one side, zip pocket on the other side), it really helps to keep things organized. Hope that helps! :-)

  16. Royal paisley blouson dress arrived last night and I'm wearing it today ... even though I'm a bit long-waisted, this is the first JC blouson dress that hits me anywhere close to the right spot! As others have noted, it's a very flattering cut/fit and I'm happy with the price I paid for it.

I'm wearing it today with a light berry-colored Merino marzipan caridgan and a pair of teal ballet flats. I feel a little bit like a crazy old lady wearing strong color on top and on my shoes, but oh well. :P

I also love the Wildcat cardi. I put it on, looked at myself in the mirror and smiled. :D Really hoping it doesn't get pilly after a few wears!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Strmywethr, thank you for the review of the colorblobk tee, as I had it in my cart and had sized up one to make sure it wasn't too snug. Now I'm thinking I will pass. ... Fred, pls. report when yours arrives!

    ReplyDelete
  18. @ Strmywethr: Regarding the Colorblocked Stripe l/s Tee, I was just coming here to rave about it, haha! It sounds like we are similar in size...do you think you'd like it better in medium? That's the size I bought - my usual. It mentions in the online description that it has bracelet sleeves, which was actually a feature that drew me to the top since I like that sleeve length with large watches and/or bracelets. I love the weight, length, and relaxed fit, and the little side vents ensure that it drapes well and doesn't ride up. I bought the cerise color and wore it to my hair appointment on Saturday where my stylist promptly flipped out over it and swore to buy one for herself.

  19. I know they have most likely be reviewed to death, but can anyone comment on the fit of the Valentina Pumps?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Flannel polka dot pajamas.
I got those before Holidays in maraschino cherry and navy. The maraschino cherry is gorgeous red but the navy is also very nice.
They are well made, soft and comfortable. The cut is quite generous and they did not shrink in the washer/dryer. I went size up in top for comfort but I probably didn't have to. Overall, I love them. I was going to pick the color but I am keeping both.
They make me feel polished when I am lounging around the house.

    Origami sheath dress.
I know this has been reviewed many time but here is my take. The wool feels nice and fits me well in my regular dress size without pulling across the bust so I would say it is great for C-DD cup. If you are small chested it may be a little baggy in that area. Is hits about 1-2 inches above my knee in size 6 at 5'6".
I was never interested in this dress because of asymmetrical neckline as I am a little bit OCD about 'clean lines' and such but I have to say it is a very nice dress. I am still not sold on the neckline, I think it is fussy and limits the wearability, as it will not look good with cardigan or even a necklace would be tricky.

    Polka dot pullover shirt.
It fits TTS, however I actually sized up to get more flowy look. The fabric is very nice cotton and silk with quite big silk content and it feels more like silk. It is slightly sheer but I think you can easily get away with wearing a black bra to go out, although I prefer to wear a black cami to the office.
Polka dots are cream not white or maybe even wheat. It is a plus for me as it pairs very nicely with camel but if you expected crisp black and white it is not it.
The fit it a little funky with much longer back than front. I am not big fan of it but since I would wear it either tucked in pencil skirt or belted so it I am fine with it.
It goes with everything, I wore it yesterday with my viridian green pencil skirt and everything else black and I loved the look. I could do the same with other bright pencils and it is very nice with camel or black pants and black cardi.
I think I will get tons of wear out of it.

    Crewcuts Girls Cadette navy coat.
It is perfection. It has thinsulate and it seems quite warm and I love the bow in the back but otherwise very clean cut classic coat.
I got it in navy and could help staring at my daughter in church last Sunday thinking how cute she looked. She is a tall 9 year old and I got her size 12.
I was stalking this size for a few weeks. I am very happy with the coat and my daughter likes it too. She is quite fashion conscious at her age.

  21. I received the Valentina pumps in Vibrant Coral- I am happy with the color and fit and they seem quite comfortable. The only thing is that there are markings in the leather where the color seems lighter and at the heels. I'm wondering if this is normal for this shoe?
I don't know if that qualifies for a defect.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Vida Blu- I found the Valentina TTS for JCrew heels. I take an 8.5 or 9 in JCrew heels and took a 9 in these and the length is perfect. I find the toebox a little narrow but my feet are wider. HTH

  24. After a couple of tries, I finally found the best fit in the boulevard trench. P6 was too short, regular 4 was too long, regular 2 was juuuust right. I tried the 2 in store, but had to order it to get the color I wanted. Third time's a charm, except when one sleeve is longer than the other. :(

    ReplyDelete
  25. Vida Blu, I second jan, I would say the same word for word, except I am in between 8 and 8.5 and I find 8.5 Valentinas very comfortable, I have coral, black and red snakeskin. Crazy, I know, but they are my favorite shoe at this moment.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @ ajc: Do you have a hard time keeping your bra strap hidden with the Origami Sheath dress? I keep hearing that it flatters a larger bust, but I wanted to make sure that I can wear a normal bra with it. I hate strapless bras and they hate me, so I only wear them if absolutely necessary.

I have that Polka-Dot Pullover too and have found it to be SO versatile. Love it!

  27. Jan and AJC, thank you so much for the helpful commentary. I have never purchased J Crew footwear before. I am a consistent 8 & 1/2, wondering if I should try a size 9 in these as you've both gone half a size up in them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Whitney, I am pretty sure you can wear a regular bra. I did not even occur to me as an issue and any non-regular bra would usually be a deal breaker for me. But I did not look carefully since I wasn't wowed by the dress. It looks great on many bloggers (check Ema from My closet My Baby and I) but I felt a little dumpy in it. I ordered it with no discount mainly to try it on.
I don't think it has the bra strap snaps but you can always add them, I love these.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Vida Blu, best thing is to order 2 sizes (non final sale of course) and try it on. You don't want to get them too big as they will slide off. To help you out, imo JC heels have very similar fit to Cole Hann were I am 8.5, but I am size 8 in Nine West or Coach. Imo J Crew shoes run narrow. If you have narrow feet go with your smaller size. My feet are medium wide and I think that's the reason I go with bigger size. For the wider running styles like some ballet flats, flat boots and mocs I wear 8. Hth.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Aww Whitney, you are totally correct on the colorblocked tee. It's called "long-sleeve" and the first view has the sleeves pushed up on the model. I should have checked further as the second shot plainly shows bracelet sleeve length. Oops! Forgive my mistake JCAs.

I wear tons of bracelets myself, maybe I should give the sleeves a try. I think I'll order a medium to see if I like the length better but either way I gotta have it.

  31. Does anyone have a review of the Nolita jacket in Great Lakes wash? I did purchase a jean jacket from Old Navy this weekend for under $30 that is not bad at all, but I keep eying the Nolita jacket.

Not sure if jean jackets are still in or not either. Are they? ha :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. @ Strmywethr: Go for it! Let us know if you like the medium any better once it arrives :)

@ ajc: Hmm, I think I'll pass if it's not a "love" for you. Ema has a great little figure and looks awesome in everything, while I've got two rather large...well, not "flaws" per say, but let's call them "fashion complications" that I need to minimize. Thanks for your tips!

  33. I mentioned last week that I tried on the cobalt blue toothpick jean at my store. Unlike most of you skinny minnies on here, I'm on the other side of the JC sizing spectrum. I wear a 10 in their pencil skirts and dresses and am between 10 and 12 in pants. I tried on the 32's and could not even zip them up! I was quite bummed out. And maybe I've gained a few pounds, but I did get the Paige version of these jeans in a 32 and I love them. So, I will be passing on the JC version. Also, today I'm wearing the wildcat cardigan. I sized up and probably shouldn't have. The sleeves are very long and I probably didn't need the extra room. I know it's probably sold out but if you're trying to catch it on a pop back, I'd say it's TTS.

  34. Academy coat in stadium cloth:
Got this during the sales before X-mas. (Wasn't even going to buy a coat this year but the price was too good.) I was surprised how much I liked it. It's a preppy coat, with an easy feel and clean lines. The length is perfect. It's very comfortable, and I love the stadium cloth. I got a 6 (I'm usually between a 4 and 6 in JC coats) and it fits me slightly on the loose side, which I don't really mind. I've been wearing this coat a lot. Very happy with it!

  35. sorry!! totally OT question but have anyone else's orders been processing slowly? I placed an order on sunday after a pair of boots I had been stalking popped back (so this was before the current promo even started) and they still haven't shipped. my orders have ALWAYS shipped the next day except for one time when an item was cancelled so I'm a little worried that's the case this time. do you guys think they're just running behind? or should I buy another pair if they pop back again? ...but if both end up shipping I have to keep both because they're final sale.....HELP!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Re: colorblock striped tee: on the tee page, it's "long-sleeved," but in the individual copy it has "bracelet sleeves." The most recent post on my blog mentions an intern who was most probably assigned to the Copywriter from Space - and I hadn't even seen this shirt when I put up the post!

    ReplyDelete
  37. After a month of patient stalking, I finally scored the pony skirt in navy and it arrived just 5 minutes ago. I LOVE it. Wow, the calf hair panel is incredibly beautiful - it glistens in the light! The navy colour of the merino wool panels is fantastic. Fit is TTS, I usually wear size 4 in pencil skirts and the size Small is a perfect fit.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Whitney: It has bra strap snaps, but I never find I need to use them. A regular bra seems to fit just fine under the dress. HTH

    ReplyDelete
  39. Louise, I've been stalking that too! I need an XS. It has popped back in every size but XS.

Tell me more! It's not lined, correct? Pull on? What is the waistband like above the leather panels? How long is it?

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Andrea I was worried as well about a dress that I ordered last Thursday not shipping yet, called my online PS and she said that they were completing warehouse inventory this past Saturday 1/7 and that things were shipping out slower. I just got a notice that the dress shipped today. HTH

  41. @JRuby - I'm also a size 10/12 JCrew girl so I always scout for these reviews...so hello and thank you :)

I received the double cloth lady day coat in oasis green from the super-sale that went on a few weeks ago and haven't reviewed yet...($56!!!) Ordered a size 10T since the T/P were what was on sale, I'm 5'8" and a pretty consistent 10 in JCrew blazers/blouses. I think the sleeves would have been too short on a regular, they are the perfect length and the coat hits at my knees. The green is beautiful...pretty much identical to JC's current heather jungle shade. Lined with thinsulate so a bit bulkier...but I live in Upstate NY where we get some cold winters and while it is warm, it certainly won't get me through the coldest days. However...with the milder winter we've been having it's been great. It buttons well with a few layers on, but a little tight when I have a bulky blazer on (I'm a D chest).I would say my only semi-gripe is that there is no back vent so I have to adjust it a bit to sit when I get in and out of the car.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Desert Flower, the pony skirt is unlined, and like other sweater knit skirts, it just pulls on, no zips. The calf hair panels have a raw edge, while the merino wool panels have a 1" wide elastic band at the waist (the elastic band is fully enclosed in the knit). The size small is 24.5" long, and falls below the knee on me. It has a faint but noticeable leather smell (not offensive, it's what you smell when you enter a leather goods store, if you know what I mean), but I think it should fade with time. I hung it up to air it out. If you want some photos, send me your email address and I can send some to you.

  43. TXgirl,

I have a J.Crew jean jacket from MANY years ago. It is fitted and looks great with many things...I wear it all the time esp. in the warm winter weather here it is all I need most days!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Louise, I would appreciate that! It's mrsnonia@aol.com.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh Anne, I am so jealous of your coat! I would looove to have that in green! I'm a similar size to you and JRuby and ITA on the sizing for the Lady Day coat; I am also normally an 8-10 and I have the Lady Day in a bright orange color in a 10T.

I just wish I had more of a chance to wear it this year!

I am tacking on a query ... why is it that so many ppl who have bought the Heart Me sweater are selling it? Are ppl just capitalizing on the FLOTUS-worn aspect, or does it fit weirdly or something? Hmmm...

    ReplyDelete
  46. @TXgirl14, I have two Nolita jackets but am waiting for the Great Lakes Wash to get marked down some + extra % off sale price + (hopefully) free ship before I'll buy it. :D

FWIW, I threw out all my other denim jackets when I got my first Nolita. It's a very lightweight denim, almost shirtlike, and very soft/broken-in. I found I felt constricted when wearing any other denim jacket. And I like to throw them on all year 'round when the occasion allows. It runs true to size for me.

If you can stomach it at full price, by all means do so. I think you'll be in love with it.

  48. I just purchased the Colorblocked stripe long-sleeve tee in the madagascar peri. Love the shirt and the colors BUT...... after one wear it started to pill under the arms. A true let down.

  49. My cherry glitterati flats arrived today and I'm in love. :) I have a wider foot, so I sized up 1/2 size (always do with JC shoes) and they're perfect. Now I need the rain to go away so I can wear them!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ryder boot in English saddle: the cardboard inserts on these came out heavily stained with the leather dye. On top of that, they run small IMO. The boots are not lined (suprise, surprise) and my fear is that they would dye my socks, tights, jeans, whatever.

Felted wool shift. I also had high hopes for this one. The proportions were totally off for me--a very high, tight waist and full hips. Plus it was itchy in the places the lining didn't cover.

Another box of returns. I'd call CS, or e-mail Mickey et al., to complain about general lack of quality control and design prowess, but I'm too weary to do so.

Did anyone else receive the e-mail linking to an online survey about JC outlet? I filled it out but doubt I will be selected for the online chat that is supposed to pay $50.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Bee Bee, when tees start to pill that is truly poor quality. Really sorry to hear that. Not much left that is high quality to buy from JCrew!

    ReplyDelete
  52. @Lizzy T, no I don't have a blog, but am hoping to start one in the near future. Just have to work up the nerve to post pics of myself, lol!! In the past few years, I've been so inspired by several people's blogs here, that I want to give it a whirl myself.

@Anne lucky girl!! By the time I saw the amazing coat deal, I missed out on my size/color!

Like Elaine said, I tried the Lady Day in Thinsulate in my normal size and it was too tight through the waist on me. I'd size up or get it w/o Thinsulate.

    ReplyDelete
  53. OK, that shirt arrived, I ordered the cerise in small. Love the fit, the sleeves are perfect. The lighter tan color is just OK, the "cerise" is more like the color formerly known as orange than like a true cherry (JC needs a French-English dictionary), but the combination of all the colors works well and the neck is flattering. So I have 60 days to hope that it won't pill.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I made a trip to the Factory store this past weekend and was pleased to find the Maritime Dress in Sail Blue and an orange / gray combo. I'm in between sizes and the smaller of the two was much more flattering. The sleeves were a bit long and big, but it wasn't anything that I can't work around. (I'm on the shorter side anyway, so that's a typical issue for me.) Overall, I liked the dress a lot, but I held off on the purchase as I really want the navy version. I haven't seen or tried the retail Maritime Dress in person (it's still online, but I don't think it's in stores again this spring), so I was wondering if anyone has seen the one at the factory store to compare. I don't have either store in my area, so I'm stuck with ordering online. I was thrilled to be able to at least try this dress on, but I'm just curious if it's any different than the retail one. Anyone know the answer?

  58. TXgirl14: Although I don't have any from JC, I have a few jean jackets that I love to wear all year round, even in the cold Canadian winter layered under sweater jackets and coats. Styled right, I don't think they'll ever go out of fashion.

Andrea: I placed an order on the 6th, it didn't ship until the 9th, and I got a shipping confirmation on the 10th. And nothing from my order was cancelled (thankfully! now I just hope they sent all the right items...). Anyways I wouldn't worry quite yet.

  59. Math Teacher ~ Unfortunately I don't have either store around me. The closest are both about 2 1/2 hours in either direction, so I don't think I'll be able to make it in to either store again before March. Every review I've seen of the retail version has been good, so I'm hoping that if I go with that one I'll be just as pleased, if not more with my purchase. The price difference was about $12, but I'm hoping for some sort of discount to pop up since I really like the navy version.

  64. so my boots just arrived even though I never received a shipping notice. I just checked the order on my account as well and even though it's updated now, it definitely was not marked as shipped when I last checked this morning. weird.....anyway I couldn't open up the box fast enough but of course I soon realized they sent me size 9 boots when I had ordered size 6!!! ughhh epic fail J Crew!!! I'm so mad/annoyed that now I have to go return the boots and then waste more time trying to find my size again. probably should've written this under the vent post :(

  65. Just a remark on the color of the Drea peep-toes in neon azalea. I saw them in store today and the color is much more neon-y than it looks online (but in a darker shade that the ones that came out two years ago). They looked a bit like hookers shoes (no offense if you bought them, just what they reminded me of off the bat). They are lovely in the other colors though, this is not about the shoe itself, just the neon azalea color.

On the other side the spearmint color of the canvas Sperry topsiders is to die for. Just the most beautiful aqua, they will look great on vacation. The navy ones are very nice too.

  67. Thanks, Math Teacher! The Maritime dress isn't showing up on the Factory site, so I was planning on getting the real retail version online. It's good to hear another person loves their dress!

  70. Does anyone else find that the Clea dress runs small? Like, really small? Or is it just me?

  71. I made an unexpected trip last night to J.Crew and left with some goodies including the Nolita Jean Jacket that I was asking about in my above posts. Love it! It is so soft and the fit is great, especially since I’m petite. I like that it hits above my hips, so that it doesn't make me look any shorter than I already am. :)

MissAugust, I wanted to chime in on the Maritime dress too. I have the retail version and love it as well. I’m now even considering buying it in another color (black) if I can figure out how to style it. The only drawback is if you live in a hot climate, like me, the material can be too hot during the late spring and summer. But it’s a great dress…and comfortable too!
