J.Crew's Red Card {its' getting serious}

A big "thanks!" to so many of you, including Jeff, Anon at 10:22 PM (in this post), Sooner_girl, Melissa, Anon at 12:05 PM, Math Teacher & Ny0311 (in this post), as well as Anon at 1:04 PM (in this post), who shared your stories about recent purchases with your red card. In case you are a new to J.Crew, J.Crew sent out a promotional multiple-use card for 25% off all purchases recently (refer to this post).

Many Aficionadas and Aficionados have reported that as of lately, sales associates have asked to see some form of an ID when using the red card. They have also reported that associates have written the customer's name in permanent marker on the red card itself. Both measures are to ensure that the promotional card is being used, and only used, by the customer it was sent to.

Have you recently used your red card? If so, did you experience either scenario (associates asking for ID, writing in marker your name on the card)? What are your thoughts on this new measure?

Quick Poll: Do you think J.Crew should be enforcing the proper use of the red card?

  1. I shopped at J Crew today on my lunch hour and was not asked for identification when I used my red card. Don't really care one way or another if they do eventually ask for ID or write my name on the card. I wasn't planning on giving the card away or selling it on eBay.

  2. Whoa, are people really selling them on eBay?!?

    ReplyDelete
  3. I know the card says it's not transferable. Therefore, they are right to enforce it. I don't agree, however, with JC making this nontransferable. My mom got a card and I didn't. We are both JCrew credit card holders, but I spend way more at JCrew than she does. If they are going to make an offer nontransferable then at least try to give it out to people in a way that makes sense. Or better yet give it to everyone who shops there regularly because maybe it would make up for all of the screw-ups they have had since last summer...

I also agree that there is nothing stopping anyone from buying things for their friends with this card and just having their friends pay them back. There is more than one way to skin a cat (and now that I type that expression I realize how gross it is... but I can't think of a comparable one).

I plan to use my card for the first time this weekend, probably at Somerset, so we shall see what happens with that.

  4. I think it's pretty bad that people are selling them. I don't have a problem with someone using a card that is not theirs, but I have a problem with people making money by selling their card on ebay.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Sorry, but don't you all think that they noticed people doing this on this blog? We all know corporate reads it. And honestly, I think it's bananas that J. Crew only e-mails this card to select customers. But judging from most people on this blog, you guys buy no matter what. The customer dictates what the company does. If you stop giving them money they won't take advantage of you. Clothes aren't that important.

  6. I used my card and bought a whole lot of stuff for friends and family. How was JCrew to know? Plus, everyone paid me back right away. JCrew should worry about big issues...not patrolling a discount card. Like Em said, More than one way to skin a cat and people will get around this sharpie pen issue. Nice try, JCrew--ha ha

  7. You would think they'd be happy about the increased traffic to their stores?

  8. I used the card last week, no ID required. I was chatting with the SA about the distribution of the card and she mentioned following JCA herself.

    ReplyDelete
  9. This happened to me today, they wrote my name down on the back and denied my friends using it. What's weird is they didn't care last week but apparently that had changed in the past few days.

  10. Sorry to be OT, Em, but how often do you go to Somerset? Usually I only make the trek twice or so per year, but I'd like to make good use of my red card and my local store is on the small side (no shoes or crewcuts) so I wonder if I should get out of town soon? I just went to Somerset a month and a half ago and don't want to make another trip if things haven't been replenished. Also, how Novi's Twelve Oaks store? It's been so long since I've been to that one I don't even recall the mall layout or anything. Any tidbits you have for me would be useful, thanks so much in advance!

  11. I was asked for ID when I used the card at the Orlando store. I thought it was a bit ridiculous, it's not like this stuff won't be marked down again, anyway. Yes, it's their company, they can set whatever policies they want, but maybe they should get over themselves.

  12. anon 4:41: Very true. I only started receiving the emails when I reduced my purchases in the last 2 months.

O/T I have been given every excuse in the book for my lost parcel, even from Supervisors, they are busy contradicting one another they forgot to help me out. They are other retailers around who value customer service, and who do not lie to their customers. Admit your error and fix it!

    ReplyDelete
  13. What makes me a little bit angry is that I buy a lot more in store than on the website and I didn't get the 25% card. I understand that this represents big savings and they want to give it only to their best costumers but how do they know? They should have given it to all their customers.

Oh, I guess I'm just upset because not only I didn't receive the 25% off card, but this month, of all the months, I didn't receive the catalog with the $25 off $125. It's like everybody else is having a discount but me!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I didn't get one. Got one last time, though. I buy a ton, too. I don't mind if people get mailed cards like this randomly, but I didn't like how the card was written. Therefore, I have stopped J. Crew shopping. I'm getting better deals elsewhere and with fewer hassles, better deals, and better quality. I've been shopping at J. Crew from practically the beginning (mid 80's), and I just don't like what they've become.

  15. Anon at 5:10 - thank you. I wish some of the people here would be as logical as you are.

  16. I used my card after work today and was asked to show my ID, where the SA promptly wrote my name in RED ink on the back of the card. This is the second time I've used the card since receiving it, so was a bit surprised by the new "policy."

  18. Anon at 4:58-
The same thing happened to me this week at the Stonestown store. One would think they wouldn't care who uses and how many times it is used as long as it generates much needed revenue for the company. The SA had a very snippy attitude when she wrote my name on my card, almost accusatory, and I haven't shared my card with anyone!

I am not particularly fond of Stonestown JC SAs anyway, but this experience left me with a really bad impression.

  19. Anon 5:10: I agree with you.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anon @ 5:01 pm: I have not been to 12 Oaks in awhile, but the last couple of trips have not seemed worth the time and gas. 12 Oaks used to get a wider selection of merchandise than other stores, but I don't think that is true any more.

Last time I was in, the sale section was large but stocked with multiples upon multiples of the same stale items that you can pretty much find anywhere.

Do you shop the Lansing store? I am going to be over that way this weekend and thought I would visit that store.

Em: If you go to Somerset, could you report back on what shoes they are carrying right now?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm sure they have their reasoning who sent it out. I wouldn't be surprised if it was random since many constant JC shoppers and random JC customers have both received it.

I got it, but I know I don't spend nearly the amount as I've seen some people here do. Doesn't mean I don't deserve it...perhaps they're trying to get me into the store, as opposed to the clients they already know will buy regardless.

With that said, I haven't used mine yet. I'm not inspired really. Funky sizing and overpriced items (even with the card) aren't enticing me. Hopefully there will be a sale befoe the month is over.

  22. OT - BUT...Still looking for the v-neck cardigan in htr silver. I'll take a small or an xs. if you have one to return, OR if you see one at a B&M, let me know!

    jeclark (at) mac dot com

I used my red card yesterday, and the SA barely glanced at it. He allowed me to use it over the red phone, which was greatly appreciated since the store selection is getting a little blah...why is all the REALLY cute stuff online only and the okay stuff is in the store?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, if they were going to take human time to check IDs, maybe they should just print the customers' names on the cards in the first place. It'd probably be more cost effective for them, and they could use the savings to print up more cards in the first place. The only reason to do this or any promotion is to move merch and drum up sales! I've only used the red card once so far and didn't have my Id checked or my blood typed, but during the last 15% off email drive, I wasn't offered a card, even when I was asked for, and gave, my address. The SA told me (of COURSE I asked!) that the promo card was only for new customers. Before that, the last email campaign last fall or winter, I was given cards two or three seperate times. Things are weird with the policies, to say the least.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anons @ 5:01 and 5:28:

I will definitely report back on what shoes (and other merch) they have at Somerset. I'll take notes :) I live in Cleveland now but I grew up in metro Detroit so I go back a few times a year, and always make it to Somerset. The JCrews in Cleveland are sad compared to that one. My brother works at Partridge Creek mall and the JCrew there is a women's only store, so I may go there too.

    I will let you know!

Have either of you (or anyone else) ever been to the Rochester Hills JCrew? I never have the entire time I lived in MI but now I'm curious about it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. anon 5:28, I've never been to the Lansing store since I'm in Ann Arbor. AA is always nice and clean but the sale section has been anemic lately. Thanks for the heads up on Twelve Oaks!

    ReplyDelete
  26. It is so easy to remove a name from a card. Just use a little nailpolish remover and it will take the name right off.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with Anony@5:10 concerning the red card. I have shopped at JCrew for many years.

I don't like JCrew's upity--recent-- attitude. I have stopped shopping when I recently received a bunch of defective and ill fitting items a couple of weeks ago. I think their quality is falling fast. Yes, some people don't mind poor quality and will continue to wear JCrew just b/c of the label but I really look at their merchandise now and think long and hard before a purchase.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If it's non-transferable, they really shouldn't have sent two cards to me (with the EXACT same name and address). Of course I am going to give one of them away. A simple little think call de-duping would have saved them lots on postage and printing. But if not, they should be happy for the extra business.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What is really amusing to me is that my B&M can't check my id when I make a purchase with my J. Crew card (or any other credit card for that matter) but apparently they can check my id when I use my red card.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I was not asked for ID and I was also given the card back (I was surprised) I also was able to use in on the red phone.

    ReplyDelete
  31. OT, but does anyone know if the cotton poplin Sydney dress is TTS? Thx!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I didn't get a card and don't live near a B&M anyway but it just seems a little low-class that they would be writing your names on the cards w/ a marker.

If they couldn't afford to offer the promotion to an unknown number of customers than why do it in the first place?

I also wonder if its a store specific issue and not necessarily company-wide? Have some store managers taken it upon themselves to make sure the card is not over-used?

    ReplyDelete
  33. This seems so silly to me. There are tons of times that I purchase something from J. Crew (and other stores) solely because I have a coupon or discount, etc. Aren't they just happy to be getting customers at all? I also think that it's fine to sell the card on eBay. I haven't done this, or will I, but I think if some are willing to pay, why not?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I used it, and my mom used it, for 2 separate transactions with no problem... the same sales girl rang us both up. No problems! Also, the card was addressed to my DAD who aside from letting me use his credit card to buy stuff a couple times in college, has NEVER shopped at JCrew...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anon @ 5:34: I only recently learned that JC had a Rocherster Hills store! I've thought about visiting when I am up in the northern suburbs on business but haven't made it there yet. I visited Partridge Creek last year. The store was packed with merchandise. I've heard that JC typcially stocks there new stores extremely well to get the store established. Don't know what's its like now.

Anon @ 5:37: You comment about the AA sale section made me smile. I agree! I feel like a lot of the best merchandise gets moved out to other stores before it ever goes on sale. So only boring basics make it to the sale section, or left overs that get shipped in from other stores. Have you seen the number of navy Aubrey jackets!

  36. OT, but I was just perusing eBay for a dress I missed out on from 2007, the red polka dot silk organza Lana dress, and I came across this.

Someone is trying to sell that for $500? Are you KIDDING me? Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hmmm interesting... all these anons saying that they stopped shopping at jcrew... and yet they keep reading this blog? why? i think they simply lie - no other explanation for it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Geez Em, some people hey? And they don't even have a photo of the skirt they own, it's just a photo of Mrs. O weariing hers. Starting bid of $500. Suckas only!

    ReplyDelete
  39. This is the first sale for the ebayer. Maybe she heard of people making buckets of money and figured she would try to get in on it. Just crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Em - I've seen that dress on eBay a few times over the past few months. Not sure if it's the same one popping up, but at least there's hope they're out there! It's super cute!

There a lot of ridiculous prices on eBay. I hope no one is a sucker enough to pay that much money to greedy sellers.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I shopped at JCrew last night and was asked for my driver's license (or maybe they just said an 'id'), and then wrote my name on the card. I love this 25% off though, and the length of time to use it. It's valid for a week into the new rollout which is really useful. Next time they should just print the customer's name on the card.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I did receive my red card and my husband did too. I think the issue is not transferring it amongst family friends etc, I think the issue is selling it. I have seen several posts on this blog from people selling the card on ebay. That is blatant misuse and I think J Crew SA's have every right to ask for ID and or write your name on it. Just my two cents. I have not used the card yet but may try to use it on the red phone to order tall suiting pieces. Any luck in this department?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Alexis: would it be overkill to poll which state people are in who received the red cards? After quickly scanning some postings, I wonder if they did it by area...maybe some stores are not doing as well as others? Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 6:31, I agree with you. If you've given up on J.Crew, why would you be following a blog dedicated to J.Crew? I think perhaps they would like to give up, but are drawn back by the cute styles.

I have seen some quality decline, certainly. I check things over more carefully and I'm more thoughtful with my purchases. I still find some great things at J.Crew and will continue to shop there until there is nothing I like worth the money.

    ReplyDelete
  45. i asked a SA today how they determine who gets the red card. she said it has to do with email and zip code capture at the register (for b&m anyway). so, JCA's - make sure you leave your zip code and email every time!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Can I use my teacher discount with this as well? Also, what if I order something over the red phone? Would I be able to use teh red card?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Can you use the red card on anything for the red phone, do they still give free shipping?

    ReplyDelete
  48. People, you might try reading the back of the red card. It is NOT good for online or telephone orders and CAN'T be used with other promotional offers (eg, educator/student discount). I like a good deal as much as the next person but these same questions keep popping up whenever the damn red card is mentioned! Because people are too lazy to read the terms or, as usual, are trying to circumvent an already good deal.

    ReplyDelete
  49. ^^Red phone orders are also not covered by the red card. I think anyone using any common sense would deduce as much from the terms on the back of the card.

    ReplyDelete
  50. That's silly that you can't share red cards with your friends and family IMO. I'm lucky to have gotten a red card but if any one of you JCAs wanted to go shopping and share the discount I personally wouldn't mind. (That's what we boston gals were planing on doing anyway...)

It's like using one of those grocery club cards and letting the person in front of you in line use it to save money on their groceries too!

Once there was this little old lady with about 10 cans of cat food and they were on sale but apparently she didn't have a card and instead paying $1.25 she was getting charged $2! I kindly offered her my club card and she was so appreciative! She saved hella money! It's kinda like paying it forward!

I don't see the harm in letting the person YOU choose to use your card... especially if you're not even going to use it! Some of you JCAs were so kind to pass it on to someone who WOULD use it so it wouldn't go to waste.

JCrew is just silly, at least they're getting more shoppers!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm just kind of annoyed that I am a very loyal J.Crew card holder/shopper and didn't even receive the red card.

    ReplyDelete
  52. This is totally unrelated to the red CARD, but can you order sale items off the red PHONE? or is it just full-priced items? And do you get free shipping? I've never used it before and couldn't find the info on their website...

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think anon 6:39 makes a lot of sense. Zip code+email address is a great way for jcrew to track spending. I received a red card this time and I always provide this info. Whenever I'm in line, I always hear people say, "Oh, I don't give my away my email address." Now they complain.

    ReplyDelete
  54. OK< Anon at 6:31, I didn't write the original comment, but I've severely cut my spending at J. Crew, I buy something there maybe once every 2 months. I sort of agree with the original anon. If you look at a vast majority of the readers/commenters here, their wardrobes are 90% or more J. Crew (read their cute little "my outfit of the day" blogs if you don't believe me) For those people to spend that much money there and to complain about the customer service (or lack thereof) that they receive is ridiculous and hypocritical.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think the attitude of J.Crew is quite divisive for the red card and other promos. Some are treated to the promos (red card, student/educator), others are not. Some people can work around the policy and get discounts or free shipping while others cannot. It makes us feel like J.Crew is not being fair. Some comments on this blog are quite resentful and I totally understand. J.Crew is not like any other store where I shop. They are just wonky with their promo and discount strategy IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  56. my mother recd the card and she only shops j crew for my sister and me -- so would it be wrong for the two of us to go to the store and buy stuff using the card sent to mum? i'd say no. we are the real customers!
jcrew needs to get over it itself. the point is not how we can get around their stupid, arbitraty policies, but how arrogant and insulting these new rules are. are they serious? people can't buy food, and here are loyal jcrewers spending some of their money on optional items instead of saving it away or spending it at another retailer. and j crew doesn't like that somebody other than who they dictate gets a discount? the nerve!
seeking and using discounts is not a game mr drexler -- it's prudent and necessary in economic times like these. and if prudent consumers continue to keep you on their list, you owe them a thank you, rather than setting up an obstacle course to fleece them of their hard-won dollars.
i've been a jcrew customer for 2 decades. the recent declining quality and price games were off-putting enough. but this? i'm disgusted.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Can you honestly be surprised that people are selling the red cards on ebay? Some people will do anything to make a buck.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The problems and resentfulness that many people, including myself, have been experiencing are all relatively recent. All have happened within the past year or so. The last time I really loved J. Crew was the Paris catalog, Fall 2007.

    ReplyDelete
  59. ^I was just looking at my copy of Paris 2007 this weekend, and realizing I'd buy it all if it went on sale today. Bought a ton back then, haven't bought even a smidgen as much since.

    ReplyDelete
  60. It has been a long time since I have opened up a catalog, loved and wanted everything. Now I go to J.Crew because I can buy a few cute pieces at a great discount. The ironic thing is that now I can afford to pay full price!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I live in Arizona and they are checking ID with the red Card here. I don't think its a big deal. if someone really wnated to get around it they could.
I was on ebay today, and there was ONE Red Card for sale with bidding starting at $1.99 - I don't think anyone is raking in the big bucks selling the red card!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I work in a direct mail marketing agency and we handled this latest promo or "red card" as it is being referenced to in the above posts. The mystery of the "red card" is this, it went to households that spend over $3000.00 per year at J. Crew, with a median household income of at least $145,000 per year. We targeted all metro areas and when we had a pool we randomly selected recipients by zip code. The return factor and spike in sales during peak times of the year were also a factor in determining if your household went into the mailing. We also determined your eligibility based on if your roll your cargo pants or wear them long.If you roll them nooooo red card for you. hee hee hee.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anon 8:04 Your cargo pants remark made me laugh out loud!! Thanks!

  64. Take your Paxil...April 8, 2009 at 8:08 PM

You know what's funny? It's not like they can regulate something like the red card. It's a universal card, just like universal codes...it's universal. Kind of nit picky if they don't want to allow people to shop and get a discount.

But here's the best part. They send out a promo like this, then get mad that they're losing money over having to give away the 25%, then pull back on the consumer. J.crew is like a bipolar company.

    ReplyDelete
  65. anon 804: lol i was reading what you wrote and at first i thought you were serious and i actually believed you. then i got to the bottom and i couldn't stop laughing. that was pretty funny of you! :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I am of the mind that J Crew can give their discounts to whomever they please. It is not labeled as a Friends & Family Event, why would you be able to share? I would imagine that J. Crew spends quite a bit of money to put a marketing plan like this together. If every T,D, and H uses it, than it's $$$ impact might still be good, but all marketing info was lost. I did not receive a red card and spend several hundred a month with J. Crew. Sure, I am disappointed, but hey, it wasn't my turn.
The only discount that has really irritated me lately was a Talbots discount code. An additional 25% off, but you could not use your Talbots card. The reasoning was that you get points when using your Talbots card. Um, Trudie should have done the math, I did. It is a much better deal to get 25% off a purchase than 5% in points.

    ReplyDelete
  67. My ps told me today that I could use the 25% card over the red phone.

I wasn't asked to show id, but I was asked for my name for the red card.

    ReplyDelete
  68. If Jcrew is this desparate to save $$ by checking ID and taking names for a discount card, it would not surprise me if they reduce the student/educator discount eventually. I can't think of another store that offers that kind of discount.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anon 8:04 that was too funny, thank you for the good laugh!

  73. I haven't gotten a red card!!! I have been shopping at J Crew since 1992 and have spent tons of money there over the years! Lately I don't get any catalogs in the mail and I haven't gotten one of these awesome red cards! Wah!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Ah why didn't I get a red card in the mail? When did you get them?

    ReplyDelete
  75. I had one SA ask me at the checkout if I qualified for the educator discount. I told her, "Of course, I'm a mother." She laughed, but gave me the discount.

  76. OT -- Have any of the JCA's reviewed the pansy jacquard pencil skirt? I ordered in online, only to get the free shipping on the Tall high heel flare jeans at a bargain price (awesome BTW), and the silk georgette pleated tank. Really, should I have to pay shipping because I'm tall and they don't stock that in BM? Sized up on the tank based on reviews, but probably shouldn't have. Think that was final sale, so it'll work.

Anywho, the skirt is beautiful, but I'm still on the fence with it. The georgette tank in tea rose is a perfect match, so there's one idea. It's so unique, that I don't know if it's practical.

Any style advice (FFM?) or should it go back?

    ReplyDelete
  77. The red card was not random. To all you who are complaining about not getting one, be honest, really--how much do you spend? If your parents got one and you didn't, that's because JCrew is smart--they figured out who REALLY has the money in your family. If you say you buy "tons of stuff" and didn't get one . . . what are you buying--tons of flip flops and Ts, or Collection? I got a red card. I've spent $3,000+ on JCrew in the past 6 months. All of this was spent online. Much of it was on items priced at $100-200+, several Collection pieces. They're pretty savvy to be sure. I was about to throw in the towel on purchases (I prefer Fall/Winter items anyway), and they've gotten me to spend another $500 at least with the promotion.

    ReplyDelete
  78. 9:19 don't be so sure. Some of the people posting here don't buy expensive items, they are posting about the great deals and some are even showcasing them on their blogs. They may spend money, but don't buy a lot, if anything at full price.

    ReplyDelete
  79. ^ And I mean those posting who have also posted that they received a red card.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I'm a long time JCrew customer but honestly I've cut way back on my spending at JCrew in the last year or two...for a variety of reasons but mostly because of quality, and price, but also because of style, fit and color changes. I received a discount card in December but didn't use it...first year ever that I didn't purchase ANY JCrew gifts. I received the latest card and don't see myself using it unless they receive new merchandise at the end of the month. I don't know what they are using as a basis for sending the cards but it most definitly NOT based on recent purchases because I have only bought a handful of things (on sale) in the last several months. Also, just for reference I have a JCrew card, I get random e-mails and can't seem to get a catalog mailed to me no matter what I do.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Alexis, this is OT, but since I noticed it with the red card (aka the "Mickey" card at my b& m), maybe it fits here. There seems to be a shift at my B&M to more basics and items & colors that can't be bought online. My theory is that the red card went to online shoppers to get them to see what's at the B&M. However, if I'm right, that's completely frustrating because what I want to spend my Mickey card isn't available there. I don't like feeling like an SA is "making an exception" for me by allowing me to use my discount over the red phone.

Anyway, I think there is a shift going on between the B&M and online and I wonder if anyone else is noticing it or if it has always been that way.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Joyce, it sure sounds that way given the number of items discussed that are B&M only, although some of them seem to show up on FS later. There have always been catalog/online only items, as long as I can remember.

    ReplyDelete
  83. To those of you that are complaining about how much you spend and still not getting the 25% off card, the recipients weren't chosen by how much they spent.

They were chosen by email address. Odd, i know - but that's how they did it. Give your email addys!!!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Joyce,

I think we shop the 2 same stores - Crabtree and South Point and I have definitely noticed a shift in the merchandise they carry and it is trending toward the more basic items. I don't like that at all. Especially given the high shipping prices and nature of final sale.

If the JCREW powers that be are learning of anything off this blog I sure wish it would be to lower shipping prices or go to a flat rate charge as most companies have done!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Wow why JCrew why? I did get a red card a few weeks ago. I have not used it yet. I do spend more money online than in store but that is only because I need tall pants and prefer petite skirts.

I think JC should be grateful that people are still spending money with them during a recession. Clothes are not important but come on there are loads of other things people could spend their money on.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I have used the card 3 times since I got it. The first 2 times, no one asked to see ID. Then yesterday, at the Short Hills, NJ store the SA asked me for ID and then wrote my name on the card.

Doesn't bother me...They can ask me to write my name in crayon on the floor, as long as I get my discount !

    ReplyDelete
  87. I used my red card a few days ago at the Cambridgeside Jcrew, and again today at the Copley location (Boston). Neither time was I asked for ID, etc. I also used the card for a red phone order and while the store associates were nice as can be, the rep on the phone was extremely unpleasant about it. She finally said that a manager could vouch for the discount if they also provided their employee ID. So I had to track down someone to do this. The entire conversation had me tempted to ask her if she had somewhere to be.

Anyway, not much good in the store, especially in the sale section. Lots of shoes on sale.

BTW, I received the red card both times and I haven't bought ANYthing since at least christmas, and not exactly huge volumes before that. I tend to shop 60/40 online/in store.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Yesterday, I went into the store and purchased $500 worth of items. I showed them my red card and then I was asked to write my name in crayon on the floor. I did it because I was allowed to practice my cursive.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I got the last card but I didn't get this one. I typically shop online and purchase most items full price because I don't have patience for a sale and I usually decide what I want after each release. I don't enjoy B&M shopping because it can be such a hassle sometimes and quite frankly I don't like people IRL. I spend over $500 per month, some months up to $1000, but definitely more in fall/winter than spring/summer. I used the last card only once so it's no big loss to me. Curious though, how they decide who gets the card each time.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Pink Cursive-LOLs. My feelings exactly.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'm a store associate and my understanding is that email addresses help with this sort of thing. If you give your email address when you buy in-store, that helps JC track how much you spend. (I am sure they can also track by credit card but I was under the impression the email is important too.)

I got a red card in the mail and like I said, I work in a store, so I can't even use it! Clearly they don't cross-reference their employee list with their promotion list.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Good to know I am not the only one that loves Somerset-OMG it is one of the best J Crew's. I was really impressed with the store and SA's. I travel there for work about once a month and now when I am looking for something and my local B&M does not have it I call Somerset:)
Regarding the red card...I did share it with some friends last week and the SA was more than happy to let them use it after ringing me up. Hmmm. Thought I was doing J Crew a favor since my friends ended up buying 2-3 more items b/c they had the extra discount. Oh well??
    Twiga

    ReplyDelete
  93. I don't see why they are doing this, its like their policy is exclusionary, I agree, they should just give all cardholders or whatever a red card. Macy's even puts the discount coupons in the newspaper!

    ReplyDelete
  94. J.Crew is not Macy's. Their hope is to be the opposite of Macy's.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Sarah, that's a good tip re. giving the email address when buying in store. I'm always asked but usually don't bother giving it b/c I thought that it was for sending me the promotions, which I already receive, not for ID purposes. It never crossed my mind that they could track my spendings by my email address ...

    ReplyDelete
  96. Now you know that they're not singling you out to NOT give you a promotion. There's a method to the madness.

    ReplyDelete
  97. FYI JCAs - I just did a 'We Will Find It' request (late night) and was told that if I was calling from a store via the red phone, they would be able to add a note to apply my Red Card 25% discount. This was validated by the team lead 'Annette' (not a supervisor, but the lead for the night). Hope that helps! I will report back if I get to try this in store in the next few weeks. :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. The Limited also has a student discount of 15%.

I don't care if people want to share their red card. If I got one and didn't need it, I'd gladly send it to someone who wants it so they can take advantage of savings that I won't get to use. I just think it's wrong (and tacky) to try and sell something you got for free.

    ReplyDelete
  99. OT - Speaking of Club Monaco, has anyone seen the April New Arrivals? There are some gorgeous pieces online, the pink Taylor trench, Petra silk halter and Sara silk pencil skirt, Zoe dress, Ursula cropped pant and Joe silk ruffle shirt.

If anyone has seen these IRL or has purchased them, I would love to hear your comments.

    TIA.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Sarah-Are you a SA in Nebraska by chance?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Anon 12:43 - I love CM as much as I love jcrew. I find a lot of their pieces fit me even better than jc.

I want the pink trench and plan to go back tomorrow to get it with my student ID, to get the discount. I also like the Ali full skirt, similar to jcrew's pleated lawn skirt but more flattering and nicer colors IMHO. I may pick that up too.

I purchased the crop ursula pant in the blue gingham check on Monday. It's super cute and very flattering. The fabric has a little stretch so it's very comfortable too. I wore it on Tuesday and felt so springy all day. :)

Haven't tried any of the other items you listed but they are now on my list to try on my visit tomorrow. I will post my opinions on them tomorrow.

  102. To all of my fellow Michiganders-I was at Rochester on Sunday and Somerset yesterday. Somerset had Joley patent leather peep toes for $79.99 and Deauville patent leather peep toes for $79.99 I saw sizes 6-8.5. There may have been more, but those are the sizes I remember. Rochester had the metallic trim tiki shirt in many sizes and the best size selection was in white. Somerset had these also, but I don’t think they had as many. Rochester also had at least a medium and large (or extra large) mehndi tee. There were tons of bubble tanks at each store. Rochester had Saturday pants for $39.99 in every color but Somerset had them for $49.99. Both had tons of café capris in stone, white and Olive (not sure of the Jcrew name for this color) for $19.99. If you want size 4 I think I bought the last of them at Rochester so you may want to check Somerset. Somerset had a lot of silk linen sweaters in champagne and warm blush in size XS, M, L, XL. Rochester had a ton of Aubrey jackets for $29.99 in navy. Also, Rochester had a lot of travel trenches (Somerset had 1 in size 12) for $129.99. Somerset had the cotton poplin Sydney dress and the pique pavilion shift and that cotton cowl neck style dress (don’t remember prices). Rochester also had quite a few dresses but I can’t remember the exact styles. Rochester had a few Jackies in brown and Orange. Rochester had lots of v neck t-shirts-I don’t remember if they had them at Somerset. Somerset had tons of shorts and both stores had the Gateau skirt in every color for $59.99. Both store had scarves for $19.99 but Rochester had more. Somerset had a ton of belts but I don’t remember prices. Both stores had the Deco dot sweater for $59.99. I bought the small at Rochester but didn’t notice sizes for the rest at either store. I hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  103. The Deco dot sweaters I saw at Rochester and Somerest were the pink color, not pewter.

  104. I have gotten both cards. I have NEVER given my email when i shop at the stores, but i have used my Jcrew card a lot though. Also, i do most of my shopping online than at B&Ms. I used my red card about a week ago at the brea store (southern ca) and i wasn't asked for id or anything. Even the SA at the register didn't seem to be on the know regarding the card because a manager told her (and me) that the card could be used unlimited times untill the end of april. BTW, I remember the last card was a 3-time-use only.

    the end.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I used my card at South Coast Plaza today - the SA just gave it back to me. Also, they have never asked for my email address in all the years I've been shopping at South Coast and I got the discount card in December as well. I think that the store is too busy. There's always a line to pay - even in the middle of the day in the middle of the week. Also, went to Century City over the weekend - I used the card then gave it to my friend to use for her purchase. They didn't mark my card at all. I guess I've been lucky.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I hope they're not really treating card users like that. It's supposed to be a nice gesture; that effort loses something when they're treated with suspicion like criminals when using it. That's just my 2 cents.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I used to work as an SA, and I just want to say that I CONSTANTLY had people be extremely rude to me when I asked for their e-mail address. There were so many people who would laugh and say "No, you absolutely cannot have my e-mail address." or "Yeah, I already get 30 e-mails a day from you." or "Great, so you can spam mail me every day?" This is karma for you, since clearly this card had to do with sharing your email address.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I need to get off my duff and use it before it expires. I normally do all my shopping on-line so a trip to the store/mall will be a different experience for me.

    ReplyDelete
  109. (I didn't read all of the comments, so someone else might have said this.) I think the reason they're inforcing this is because they want to track whether or not the card is working as it's supposed to. I don't know J.Crew's marketing strategy, but there must be one. Does each card have a different barcode? I really think it has something to do with that (tracking something for marketing).

    ReplyDelete
  110. I used my red card this past weekend and the lady did not ask for any identification. She knows who I am b/c I've been to that store so much over the years. I don't know if I'm good customer or not. I never buy anything at full price. I just go to the sale rack and I can always find some great stuff. I found the french terry cardigan for 29.99, the microstripe merino wool v-neck cardigan for 39.99 and the library shawl cardi for 39.99. Of course, the 25% off card made things even cheaper! I love J. Crew. I'm still curious about how they decide to give the red cards out to people, I'm not a cardmember. I probably on spend on average $100to $150 a month there.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I visited the cherry hill, nj store last week with my sister. I was willing to pay for my sisters purchases and use the card, and she would have just paid me back - but the sales assoc. just used it for my sister's items....what's the difference????

    ReplyDelete
  112. I used my Red Card yesterday and they wrote my name on it, but didn't ask for ID since they know me. Also, I was told by my online PS that the Red Card CAN be used for Red Phone orders. :)

    ReplyDelete
  113. Anony@8:06
I gave JCrew my email address. I spend over a grand each month and yet I have never got one of these red cards.....What is your excuse for bad behavior now?

And,yes, people have every right to say no when you ask them for a personal bit of info. Chill out!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Not real sure about how the email address thing works...how does that relate to your HOME address where they send the card?

When shopping at a b&m, they always want me school email, b/c I get the educ. discount. However, when I order online, I use another email address, which was set up long b/f I knew about the educ. discount.

The red card was sent to my HOME address where shipments come from online orders using an email different than I give in the store.....Do you really think they put that much thought into it?

In our house, there are three teenage/college age daughters in addition to me and so we spend more than I want to add up there each month.

Still not sure how this selection process works. Last 25% off card b/f Christmas, I received two cards. This time, just one arrived.

    Go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I used mine yesterday at South Coast Plaza, and like the previous poster, they did not bat an eye at my red card. The place was crazy, though. I did get the last dainty sphere necklace. Yay!

    ReplyDelete
  116. GapGirl, no I am not in Nebraska.

I agree with the points everyone has raised about email and the red card, I'm just relaying what I've understood as an SA. I should have been clearer though about the JC credit card; if you have one of those then of course they can track your purchases with or without the email. I remember being told that JCrew (and any company, I guess) can get address information from email, and that's why the SAs don't ask for your full address each time you shop - because the system can get it. And it takes less time at the register. Don't know if that's true.

And to the former SA who posted about email addresses - so true! The retail store policy is that you must show a student ID and provide a student email in order to get the student discount. Every single time someone wants the discount, I tell them that. And probably 50% of those people would agree and then at the end of the transaction, give me HUGE attitude about the email address. I understand if you don't want to share your address, but it's part of the policy and I explained it before the transaction so you know the rules.

Also, many people use college IDs well after they graduate and provide old or expired college emails. JCrew doesn't do anything about that. I've never seen an SA refuse a student discount because she scrutinized the ID, for example. So I guess I get a little annoyed when people in the stores react rudely about the parameters of the student discount.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I did not get a card. I probably spend ~$4,000 per year on J.Crew clothes. This really bothers me. I have decided not to purchase anything until this promotion expires. I don't understand why J.Crew would discrimate against and alienate so many of their loyal customers. Are they actively trying to make me feel bad and drive me away?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Anon at 9:22 - yes, people absolutely have the right to say no. I'm not contesting that. I am contesting the rude manner in which people choose to do it. And I'm sorry you didn't get a card. I don't know the reasoning behind it and was just putting in my 2 cents. I certainly don't think they sent it to everyone who has ever shared an e-mail. In my experience, it is a combination between that and the amount you spend, which they track through several different methods. There are people who spend more than $5,000 a month at J. Crew. Who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I used the red card a few days after I received it and was not asked for ID, etc. I used it in one transaction for items for my mom and myself - and it was clear to the sales girl that they were not just for me because she had been helping both of us in the fitting room. So, I certainly don't think they mind you using the card when you are buying things for someone else.

I truly believe the card distribution is probably a random selection of all types of customers (both frequent high-spending customers and infrequent customers).

    ReplyDelete
  120. To those claiming you have to be a HUGE spender to get the card, that was not true in my case. Over the past 6 months I've been spending at most $100 per month, and frequently less. Before that I was spending about $500 per quarter (including the outlet).

    ReplyDelete
  121. Was anyone else bummed that unlike the "Mickey Card" sent out at Holiday, this one cannot be combined with the student discount -- whereas the previous one could ... ?! I am not arguing either way -- just bummed!

    ReplyDelete
  122. hey! i called and they sent me a card and they were really nice. also i used it in the store and they were not psychotic about it at all.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I used my red card for the first time yesterday and they asked me to sign my name and then asked for my id. My signature was pretty slopy as I was in a hurry and had stuff in my hands. When the SA looked at my id and then at my red card, she gave me a rude look - as if I was committing some sort of crime. If jcrew is going to send out discount cards then don't treat us as dirtbags if we want to use it! Also, I have "see id" on the signature line of my jcrew card and it is rare that a SA ever checks my id! I went to another store right after this as they didn't have everything I wanted and hesitated with using the card again! But I figured I cared more about saving money then someone trying to make me feel bad. That SA didn't look at my signature or ask for my id. Jcrew might want to think about how they are offending good customers. I agree with other postings - one could easily buy stuff for others and they could just pay you back.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I assume the point of the card is to spark purchases and sell more clothes and not a personal thank you token for customers. If this card sparks purchases from other consumers, I can't imagine why that is bad for jcrew. These are people who may not buy at all without a coupon.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Also wondering if anyone has refused to sign the redcard or show ID?

That is not part of the terms and conditions of the discount. I'm guessing they have to honor it.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I was at the Liberty Place Jcrew this morning (in Phila). First, the sales people were MUCH friendlier (must be because sales are down). Second, they told me that the card was not transferable so they needed to write my name on it. It's not a big deal. I don't think it's anything to get upset about. This is a privilege they extend to some customers and they want to ensure that the cards are not sold on ebay. They should've spent the money to have the cards personalized or just link the 25% off to the particular credit card holder (so you don't have to show the red card, it just comes up on your account)

    ReplyDelete
  127. At my local J. Crew, there is an additional 30% off sale. No signs, but the SA's were telling everyone. However, for the first time ever I wasn't able to use my teacher discount with the sale. When I asked if this was a new policy, the SA didn't really have an answer. She kind of mumbled, "maybe, I think so, it might be". I thought that was odd. Even the SA's don't know the deal!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Sarah: Was it an additional 30% off already reduced items? What store did you shop at??

    ReplyDelete
  129. The additional 30% was off sale prices. No red card and no student/teacher discount can be used. However, they did put a ton of stuff into the clearance section so it about doubled in size.

    This was in Freehold, NJ.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Thanks, Sarah. I will have to check out my local store. This was definitely not going on in Chicago yesterday!

    ReplyDelete
  131. ooh i hope my local store is having an additional % off sale! i wonder why you can't use the red card with it... 30% off is good enough for me though! thanks sarah for the heads up!

    ReplyDelete
  132. Theory:

I'm wondering if they sent cards out to people who used to buy frequently but had stopped/slowed down in their purchases and so were trying to lure back.

Think about it - I think their goal was to drum up more business. Therefore sending to people who already spend a lot/often is a waste. But targeting people who used to spend but no longer do would be pretty effective.

Just my hypothesis as to how JC chose who to send to.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I've used my card about 3-4 times so far and today was the 1st time I was asked for ID. I have used it at Brinton Lakes PA store and KOP PA store. I am in BL much more often and they pretty much know me there, and not as much at KOP. KOP is the store which asked for my ID. I told them I thought it was ridiculous. WHile I am not sharing the card with anyone, it's still stupid.
I understand that what they are trying to do is 1) see who they sent the card to 2) see if they spend MORE while they've got the card, which they will not be able to tell if we are all letting our friends/family use it. But like someone said, they should have printed our names on it then. Making us sign it in black marker is pretty ghetto, IMO!

And I'd rather have the 25% off with the card than an additional 30% off sale, b/c the additional 30% off makes the sale final sale. It's not final sale with the red card.

  134. OT - Does anyone know what time the website inventory is updating now? The past couple of weeks it was between 9 and 11 am EST. Now I'm checking even around 8 am and I think I'm late? Any input would be great! TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  135. No additional percent off at the Ann Arbor store today, and I was asked to present ID when I used my red card. I tried on a couple things, the pique shift was down to 19.99, and there's tons of the shawl collar sweatshirt cardigans. Ended up only getting a polo for DH. Boy are pickin's slim for the menfolk! Sale section is measly for them, but at least the stuff seems decent (if somewhat uninspired.) All the womens' stuff was either meh or I already have it, or something almost exactly like it.

    ReplyDelete
  136. whitney you answered your own question. if you're late by 8, then try before that!

    ReplyDelete
  137. Anon 9:40 - I know, but I'm sure others are more on top of it than me and have identified a narrow window of when the website inventory is refreshed (in the past week or so). Maybe the IT group slacked / slept in the past couple of weeks and that's why it was so much later. I've read of people setting alarms in the morning to check the website ... not sure I'll go that route, but interested in what the "magic time" is now!

    ReplyDelete
  138. I think the red card is great in theory, but it is difficult for J. Crew to track purchases and really know who spend the most money at their stores. J. Crew tracks all online/phone orders easily, but the stores only track most purchases through personal shoppers. Therefore, many customers who do not use ps may be missing out of opportunities like this. I got the red card due to my online purchases, but many friends that have spent much more in b&ms did not. If anyone wants to start receiving these, I'd say order more online or get a ps who will track your purchases and then if you really do spend a lot, you will def be getting opportunities like the red card.

    ReplyDelete
  139. glitterista,
Your theory/logic makes no sense. I spend over 1,500 a month and it is all online except for some purchases last Aug. in a store. I do have an online PS. I did not get eithe red card; either time.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Yeah,
Like JC is going to let you get 30% off the store sale prices and use the red card for an extra 25% off on top of that...silly!

    ReplyDelete
  141. Before placing an order online, I called cs to see if I was able to use a free shipping code, then call to have the 25% applied. The cs rep said yes---absolutely. So, I place the order with free shipping, cancel the skirt that was on hold for me at the b&m store (didn't feel like making a trip down there this weekend--too much going on) and call back to apply the red card. Guess what the NEXT cs rep says? I can't apply the discount. I explain that I just was on the phone 5 minutes ago, and asked about it. She talks to her superviser.... NO. I was soooo unbelievably annoyed and frustrated. This has happened to me so many times with j crew. WHY is everyone on different pages? What kind of training do they give their reps???

Finally, after asking for the phone call to be found (they are recorded) I was told I could bring my invoice into a store and they could apply the discount. So I still end up GOING to the store. I probably would have kept the jeans I added to the order to get the free shipping, but now since I have to make a trip to the store anyway (exactly what I was trying to avoid in the firs place) I suppose I'll return the jeans. I really don't need another pair.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I don't understand why jcrew doesn't send a red discount card to all customers (that they can track). Fortunately I got one and I used it the other day and bought several items totalling around $300. Without the extra 25%, I would not have purchased these items. I had a few items that I wanted to purchase but was actually waiting to see if I got a discount card. Isn't it better to sell your product at a discounted rate then not sell it at all??

    ReplyDelete
  143. In Richmond they wrote my name on my card, but when I argued back they let my boyfriend and I both use it. What is the point of giving out these coupons and regulating them so heavily? If they wanted it to be just for me then they should have printed my name on it.

I probably would have just complied (we both already get a student discount, so it's not a huge different), but she was extremely rude about me wanting to use the card to begin with.

I am SO fed up with J.Crew.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I used my red card for the 4th time tonight- they asked for my id and wrote my name on the card, however they were really nice. they did let me use it over the red phone.

it was the northbrook court store

  145. I very politely emailed customer service to ask about the red card promotion. a string of at least 6 emails was created as the CSR didn't know what i was talking about: first she said it was for purchasing over $500 in 3 months on a Jcrew credit card. I said I wasn't looking for a rewards card. then she thought i wanted one reissued. Then she said it was only for really good customers or something. the SA at my store thought it was only for credit card customers which isn't true either. i would be happy with an explanation of the promotion even without getting one. i usually use cash, except when ordering on line. so, like some posters have suggested, i am just keeping my money as it is hard to shop when i imagine the prices 25% less....

    ReplyDelete
  146. I was at the JCrew store in the Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey. The store was small but very well stocked. I didn't have the red card to use but there was one at the register that the cashiers were using for everyone. I thought that this was really nice of them. It's a new store so I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I'm a Jcrew card holder and I did not receive a card. Do you guys know what the criteria is on getting one of these? I emailed customer service and was told ' we do not have one for you' without an explanation. I'm seriously considering exploring other options when I shop. Is this how they intend to show customer loyalty in this type of an economy?

    ReplyDelete
  148. This is the email I received from Brittany the Jcrew Brand Manager. They really know how to ' THANK ' their customers.

Thanks so much for your email - do appreciate you taking the time to
write. Regarding our current 25% off promotion, there was no set
criteria for this particular program. While we were not able to catch
every customer this time, we are certainly looking at other future

  149. I refuse to purchase anything from JCrew during the red card promotion. I am even CONSIDERING canceling my JCREW ACCOUNT. You would *THINK* the more sales they get the better? Perhaps they should take a look at the poll on this website and see how lame all of this is. Listen to your customers. I'll be shopping at BananaRepublic.com this month.

    Kthxbye!

  150. I shopped at JCrew on 5th Ave in NYC yesterday and the cashier asked me to sign the card and show ID. She explained that they were doing this because they had seen "far too many" transactions in the first weeks, and that the cards were not meant to be shared. Seems silly in this economy with the continued negative reports on their performance.

  151. Anon @ 3:52 - that statement by the SA is too funny! They are getting "far too many" transactions!? Do they not want to sell their stuff? I thought the point of running promotions like this is to spark sales?

I agree! I do not understand their marketing tactics.

  153. I used mine today and they wrote my name on the card in sharpie. Here's the thing....I live in a small town and shop weekly at the local j crew. I know everyone that works there. But I understand policy is policy. It was nice to have that little card when I was buying a gift today!

  154. I have used my card a few times in my home town. This weekend, I was visiting a different state and stopped by the local J Crew to get a t-shirt. When I presented my red card, the SA asked for ID and wrote my last name on the front with a Sharpie. I don't care either way, but thought it was strange the way he studied my ID!

  155. Maybe I am just a realist or have checked my personal sense of entitlement at the door but:
    - it seems a company has a right to issue incentives to whomever it pleases using whatever criteria it chooses and doesn't need to change said plan to fit the ideas of 172 opinionated and critical people amongst the anonymous internet masses.
    - I wonder how many Anon. posters on here work for say...Banana Republic. And how often Anonymous comments get taken as the gospel truth...amazing.
    - I would advise that you cultivate friendly, respectful, and personal relationships at whatever store/retailer you frequent: the adage about "catching flies with honey..." is still relevant in this day and age. I typically do not experience issues with returns, discounts, having or not having coupons because I have created relationships with people who work in places I value AND I make reasonable requests that do not ask associates to go against policies and logic. Its just how I was raised. I clean out my own fitting rooms too.
