J.Crew's Third Sample Sale Starts Today! :)

ClothingLine will be hosting yet another J.Crew sample sale in NYC, taking place during this week of April 13th. For more information from , click here.

This sample sale will have lots of items for women from both the J.Crew, Crewcuts and Madewell line. Clothingline mentions that this event is "J.Crew's Biggest Sample Sale Ever". I am not sure if that means they have brought in new merchandise to sell or if this includes the merchandise they were unable to sell in the first two sample sales. In either case, I hope the prices are fantastic!

The location for the event is:
Clothingline | SSS Sample Sales
261 W 36th Street
(between 7th & 8th Ave)
2nd Floor
New York, NY 10018

MINI UPDATE: They announced that they will be "receiving a huge shipment of bags and scarves Wednesday morning." I hope there are some great deals! :)

Will you be attending this latest sample sale? If you are, please let us know! :)

  2. Geez, the last sample sale was "big" enough. I don't see how this one could get any bigger. I'll probably check this out & give a short blog post.

  3. I'm tempted because they say that they're going to have spring merchandise and stock items (I went to the first but not the second one). If they have stock merchandise the fact that they don't allow try-ons is less of an issue because I know my size.
Anyway, I can't go today, tomorrow at the earliest, so I will wait for the reports from the JCAs before deciding.

  4. OT topic/semi-related,

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I was at KOP this weekend and a Madewell is coming (just around the corner from jcrew).

  5. I'm on my way there right now!

  6. Depending on everyone's reports I might make the trip out this week. Jeff keep us posted :)

  7. Firm Sells Boatload of J. Crew StockApril 13, 2009 at 8:54 AM

AS THE J. CREW GROUP (ticker: JCG) basks in Michelle Obama's glamorous spotlight, the private-equity firm that reinvented the company has bowed out. TPG Capital, the Texas firm that bought J. Crew out in 1997 and brought it public again in 2006, sold its remaining shares in the company this week.

TPG sold 2,804,255 shares on Wednesday for $39 million, or an average of $14 per share.

    -BARRONS APRIL 10,2009

THIS IS WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE COMPANY AND ANSWERS MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT PROMOTIONS, QUALITY AND CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE MANY SAMPLE SALES.

    ReplyDelete
  8. ^Do you want to explain the connection you have drawn? Because its not obvious, given that TPG owned less than 5% of the outstanding shares.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think they owned many shares at one time and finally decided to get out completely.....by selling the last of their shares.

Obviously, they did this initially to build profit.

(I am not the first poster by the way....)

  10. Of course, no retail is doing well right now. However, the first poster should take a look at J. Crew's stock versus other ladies retailers. J. Crew's is performing almost double the others. I am not sure that TPGs sale has anything to do with the issues the poster mentioned. and they would be hard pressed to draw a parallel.

  11. Firm Sells Boatload of J. Crew StockApril 13, 2009 at 11:26 AM

Anon 10:58 - exactly! Good explanation.

TPG was apparently looking forward and decided forward is not looking too good at JCrew and cut their losses.

All the JCrew promotions are designed to get customers in the stores and purchase online. They are trying to offload a huge amount of inventory with the sample sales while at the same time try to maintain the cachet JCrew has had in the past.

JCA's save JCrew and buy, buy, buy!

  12. Hi all,

Sorry to be OT but I have news for the Bay area JCAs....

As you may know, the Los Gatos store is opening this week. Well, to make things even more tempting, they're offering an incentive to shop. I rec'vd an email from them that said:
"Come visit us & receive $25 off any purchase of $125 or more (but hurry, offer ends Tues April 28th)." JCREW LOS GATOS

I find this esp tempting as it more than offsets the gas$$ on a trip I was planning anyway. Reeallly hope there's some lovely things left this weekend.

Hope to see some of you there!

  13. Why have you posted that same message about stocks in every post? Do you work for the company or have some invested interest in it? It looks fishy...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Firm Sells Boatload: TPG is a private equity firm that buys underperforming companies and low and sells high later. TPG owned as much as 77% of the stock at one time. I'm guessin' but I think they have probably made their money back a long time ago. Private equity does not usually hold a company long-term. So it makes sense that they have liquidated their remaining stock. In this economy, they are probably stocking their next acquisition.

  15. ^egads, I meant stalking, not stocking.

  16. can we talk about the sample sale? not stocks.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I went to sample sale. The items are similar to what they sold at the last sale. A lot of the items are size 6 for women. Most of the men's sizes are 32. Most of the items are samples not a lot stock. The sale is very crowded so go early if you plan on going.

  18. Anon, you mean there's still a lot of cashmere? Can you name a few stock items that you saw? Thank you so much!

  19. Anon at 12:22. I am not the original anon, but I sure appreciate the stock comparisons. If I only read this blog, I would think that the company is doing quite poorly. Therefore, I appreciate the more businesslike perspective. That is just my personal opinion though. Even if they do own stock, why is it fishy? I just do not understand your concern. How does it affect the blog if a stockholder asks someone to take a look at the market?

  20. Firm Sells Boatload of J. Crew StockApril 13, 2009 at 7:31 PM

According to financial reports, TPG took the opportunity to sell out after the March rally. Seems Mrs. O contributed to the stock run up. Yes, TPG will use its capital elsewhere, their investment was not as successful as they had hoped, particularly after the initial run up after the IPO.

  21. Firm Sales a Boatload has his/her own agenda. Nowhere does Barron's report that TPG did not do as well on the deal as it had projected. In fact, the article suggests that TPG made a killing.

For the record, here's what Barron's reported:

At a time when private-equity firms are struggling just to keep the lights on, TPG's success with J. Crew stands out as a reminder of private equity's heyday. The turnaround story was a Harvard Business Publishing case study. TPG has reaped hundreds of millions of dollars from the buyout, though the share price has declined since the initial public offering in June 2006, which was priced at $20 per share. (Shares rose 28% on the stock's first day of trading.) TPG had revived the company after it had fallen into a rut in the late 1990s, posting a double-digit monthly same-store-sales drop shortly before the buyout. The company brought in a new chief executive and cut the number of stores, among other changes.

    J. Crew is now riding a wave of good publicity around the First Lady's embrace of the brand, and the stock is up 33% since the beginning of the year, versus 13% for Gap (GPS).

Unlike a sale by a large mutual fund or other institutional investor, TPG's sale should not alarm investors, says Ben Silverman, director of research at InsiderScore.com.

"At some point, private-equity guys are going to sell their stake," he says. "Their strategy is not to hold on to the stock of public companies for years."

TPG's sale did not particularly hurt shareholders because it was arranged privately and did not create a surge in selling volume that could have driven the stock down, Silverman says.

Yep, TPG got out. They made a boat load of cash and decided its was time to move on to the next conquest. Hard to say whether they took advantage of the March rally or whether there has been a long-standing agreement for them to be bought out once the stock reached a certain price point.

  22. FYI JCrew Los Gatos opened today. I went and it was pretty busy. They have all the spring stuff and no sale (duh). I have bought so much at other stores that I went only to get the slub cotton square neck tee in light grey in extra small since it's pretty much sold out company wide.

  23. Anon at 8:35. Thanks so much for the full story. Hadn't had a chance to look it up online yet. Now I will not need to.

  24. Alright, the sale was a bit on the lame side. I went there at 4PM & there was no crowd. I guess all the good stuff was gone by that time. There are some nice suits for men however.

  25. I love seeing that there are 24 comments on this thread, and the majority of them AREN'T about the sample sale!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jeff, could you be a little bit more specific on what you saw? I don't know if it's worth it to go or not today as it's the only day when I can!

    TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  27. There is not a thread for EVERY SINGLE TOPIC.

I am glad to see stocks being discussed as well as the sample sale.

Why do others care so much? Do you have too much time on your hands?

Need to take a skim reading refresher course?

  28. I went to the sale on Monday morning. Was one of the first ones it! Got a ton of stuff, but it was insane. Crazed New Yorkers pulling at cashmere! And the staff was a little surly. I don't think the prices were that great. Maybe I just expected something else because I have never been to one before.

  29. any shoes or bags at the sale?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ema: Kind of a late reply, but yeah there was a ton of dresses there. Mostly singles. Some tops that's not really worth anyone's time, a rack or two of jeans & other pants, plus a few skirts. As for accessories & bags, they're suppose to come in today. Oh, & I saw one pair of shoes. haha.

  31. Hi Jeff, I went today (I didn't have anything better to do), but thank you anyway.

I agree with you, it's not worth it and the "big arrival of scarves and bags" was a joke, unless everything had been sold by 2.30 pm, when I arrived. Really old stuff, not interesting and in bad condition (there were a few evening clutches that I would have bought but they were $35 and they looked like they had been rescued in a stampede).

Ladies, not worth going unless you have a craving for cashmere sweaters with holes in them.
I found some fantastic deals in store today and the items are in pristine condition.

  32. Any wedding dresses at the sample sale?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I also went to the sale and didn't find anything too great. I thought that the first sale had much better merchandise for women. There were a lot of tops and cashmere sweaters. I found a cute jacket but then they told me it was 80 dollars...which I felt was overpriced given that it's supposed to be a sample sale...I almost bought a white cashmere sweater but then saw that "SAMPLE" was written along the inside and that if you actually wore this, the whole world would've seen that you got it from a sample sale. Not cool. Overall, not worth going to this one.

  34. THIS WAS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE- IT WAS THE LEFT OVERS FROM THE LAST 2 SALES OR SOME HORRIBLE DUSTY BIN IN CHINA---RIPPED SWEATERS WITH BLACK SAMPLE WRITTEN ON THEM-- SOME HAD TAGS IN CHINESE STATING THEY WERE FROM 2005 -60 DOLLARS FOR UNFINISHED RIPPED DRESSES

  35. Jeff, Ema, Anon at 12:37 AM, Gail, & all those who reported back: Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It definitely was useful. :) I am glad to know that I do not need to make a special trip into the city for this sample sale.
