J.Crew Email: New cargo has arrived.

A big "thanks!" to Danielle who shared with us J.Crew's latest email.

J.Crew is letting us know about one of their new arrivals, the Ripstop Utility Pant (Item 14784; $69.50). Although Liya (the model in the image above) wears those cargo pants beautifully, I know I could never pull them off. Also, I am not sure if I like the whole "rolled-up" pant leg look. I remember sporting the look back in the late 80's and early 90's, and it did me no favors. ;)

Lastly, I didn't get this email. (So I really appreciate Danielle sharing it with us.) Oh J.Crew, why won't you send me emails anymore? ;)

What are your thoughts on the Ripstop Utility Pants? Have you tried them on? If so, please share with us your review. Also, what are your thoughts on the "rolling up the pant leg" look? Are you a fan of this style, or do you think it is a fashion faux pas?

Quick Poll: Do you like the "rolled up pant leg" look?

  1. I plan to purchase a couple of these full price and then watch for more on FS. I have some from a couple years ago and I love them. I wear them all the time and they are flattering to my stick-figure as they actually lend a bit of shape. I've found them comfortable and durable in the past. Hope this year's will be too.

  2. My take on the rolled pant was so they could show off the shoes. They've done it for a few years now. Unfortunately it's led to people actually wearing their pants out like this...

I love how cargo pants look on most other people...just not me. :(

I'm irked at J Crew because I never seem to get half of these emails anymore. It's prolly because I haven't purchased anything online in forever.

  4. J. Crew's cargos are always too wide-legged on me. I like Anthropologie's version (they sent an almost identical e-mail today) but they are $172!! Yikes, and I thought J. Crew was bad!

  5. I love the way they look on the model, but I could never pull that look off! Well, not without growing an extra 4 inches. ;)

  6. Sad to say, but I'm waiting for the next roll-out. :/

  7. I'm new to the blog and can't figure out where else to post this, does anyone know why everything JCrew added today has a shipdate of 6.22? Is that wrong? It seems odd to me they'd add a bunch of new clothes that aren't ready to be shipped, can't say i've seen them do that before. Thanks! :)

  8. Looking at these pants online, from the side view, the cargo pockets look HUGE!

  9. Anony 8:35, thanks for mentioning that because I did not see it (nothing new was interesting enough to me). I wonder if they are trying to stir up interest in their new releases for pre-orders. I can't see how J.Crew can conduct business as usual.

  10. I gather I'm in the minority on this one, but I love the pair I bought--granted, I am on the small side--a 2P. I'm thinking of getting a second pair. And I never stopped rolling my pants, ha ha.

  11. Ironically, I got an email ad from Anthropologie today with the tag line 'Precious Cargo,' *also* featuring tan cargo pants...coincedence or no?

  12. My 0P ripstop cargo from 2 years ago are wide too. (huge side pockets also.) The model looks great, while I look like a skinny kid in baggy pants :D

Rolled up bf jeans is all the rage too. Some stylist said petite ladies might want to avoid capri or roll-ups since it would visually cut short our legs. I find that quite true in my case. Regardless of height, I imagine the look could work on you gals who have longer leg in proportion to torso. No?

  13. I have not tried the cargos, but probably will. I am not stick straight and fitting pants can be challenging, but I try not to prejudge fits. I've been surprised more than one.

Rolled pants, particularly rolled cargos send me back to the early 1980s when my high school friends and I shopped the local army and navy surplus store for green army pants that we could peg or roll to appear pegged.

That said, I have been experimenting with some rolled jeans looks. Does work really set-off a great pair of heeled shoes that may otherwise be hidden by a long bootleg.

  14. I haven't seen these in store yet but I have a couple from several years ago. I like to roll them up when they are too wide in the bottom, it helps to give them a little bit of style (otherwise they really look like "uyility" pants).

Otherwise, I didn't get this email either ...

  15. I noticed that several people have been drawing parallels between J Crew and Anthropologie. The only catch is that Anthropologie will sell all of the ad cargo pants for 172.00, they won't sell them full price for 1 week and then discount them to 24.99 the next. They do not play the bait and switch game that J Crew is oh so fond of lately. It is not smart to bankrupt your brand.

  16. I am not getting emails anymore either. ;( What is going on? I have been shopping there more lately, too.

  17. I love rolled up or cuffed legs - because they hide too short pants that I love. For me, the key is to just roll them without pegging because the pegging brings back the 1980's flashbacks - and all too often, leads to the ice cream cone effect.

  18. I can't wait until they do some turnover with the FS merchandise...More spring stuff!

  19. I have a hard time with cargo=esque pants. Living in the NW they're everywhere so it's kind of granola to me. I did however get the boyfriend jean at the Gap (half the price compared to JCrew, plus they're adorable on) and I rolled those up when I wore them. Those were very cute that way.
I have a feeling I'll be wearing those a lot this summer...when I don't feel like wearing skirts or shorts.

  20. Rolled up are fine, but avoid pegged pants Pretty in Pink style, please!

  21. Maybe I'm late catching on ... but is the sale no longer "final sale"?? It looks like the page has changed since this morning and it just says "Spinng Sale"!

  22. I like rolled up pants with heels, its a cute casual/fancy mashup

  23. I sport this look alot to show off my gorgeous JCrew shoes... but I am stick figureish and so I think it looks ok. And everyone needs to see my Penelope mary janes/peep toes.

Also I hate cargo pants and thought they went out of style in the 90s. They do look good on the model though I would just never think to buy them!

  24. I love cargo pants. I own 7 pair and wear them a lot! They are all JCrew ones from various years:)

  25. Em,
Cargo pants have never gone out of style but the style of them varies...I started buying them from Jcrew in 2002.......and they are still making them and people are still buying them every year...I have pairs from 2005 and 2006 as well.

  26. I've been wearing my jeans and chinos rolled for at least 3 years now... this is not new, j.crew has been doing it for a long time and I've been doing it ever since they started to.

  27. I get JCrew email at 3 different email address to be on the safe side. Only one of my address got this one but I did't even read it I just deleted it as it was just an ad (I am looking for sales:)

  28. I don't roll my pants at all. I think it looks silly but to each his own. I have spent my life being tall and trying to find pants long enough...not doing the roll thing. That said, I like the selvege edged ones that are meant to be cuffed.

  29. The side pocket is huge, so if you have curves forget these pants.

The rolled look is best left for the teenagers.

  30. I love j crew clothing but their pants have never been able to work for me. Everything, from the cafe capri to the khakis are cut too boxy in the leg. Awful.

  31. OT: Anyone else think that the Milla Gown looks like something Mrs. Ropper would wear?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Penny: Yes, it does! But the Mrs. Roper look is totally in right now (caftans, maxi dresses in floral prints, etc.). I think we'll look back on it (very soon) and say "what were we thinking"?!LOL

  33. Glad to hear I'm notthe only one out of the loop on the e-mails. I feel like JCrew has "abandoned" me. ;-)or have they left me with cash in my pocket? Hmmmm

  34. Should add that no one in my house received the Liya catalogue. We usually end up with at least 2 copies.

  35. Doesn't jcrew sell cargo pants (and ripstop material shorts and skirts, too,)... um, like, every spring/summer? While I like that jcrew consistently offers the same style of items, it does annoy me when they try to act like it is some new, must have trend.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love JCrew cargo pants. They fit me great and yes, they have them every year...shorts and skirts too:)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I returned these pants, they did not flatter my curves, and the leg is really wide.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I tried these on today b/c my ps wanted me to. Well, I was surprised that I liked them! I won't wear them rolled (I'm just not into that look), but they are cute. If you have the opportunity, you should at least give them a try.

  39. Rolled pants are appropriate for two situations: walking on the beach, and mucking around in the garden. In every other situation, they make grown women looks infantile! Women who can pull off capris look a thousand times more polished (and less like they're trying too hard) in those.

  40. Tasty moog I have those minis and shorts. I've bought them, along with the cargo pants every year for the last few years. The 2007 versions were the best ever. Last year's were OK, but I wasn't crazy about the tucked/pleated pockets.

  41. Hello All! I am an ancient JCrew associate and it's my first visit to this website. I think I like what I see! A faithful client and friend referred me. It's interesting to see people's perceptions. It's also interesting to hear that some people who are on our mailing lists apparently fall off! It is drilled into our heads to collect emails at EVERY transaction and so often I get a hostile response. Giving your email will not cause duplicate emails. We have to collect the data. So if an associate doesn't ask, just offer it up.

    A.
